Chapter 19

Elphaba left the ladies, promising to be back as soon as she could. She followed Mopsi and Popsi down to Glinda's office, where Brrr was waiting. The green woman smiled at the Lion and asked,

"Do you know what's going on?"

"Mr. Mopsi and Mr. Popsi have clued me in, but I stopped them as I figured you'd want to know as well," Brrr admitted.

"Right. So, you want to tell us all the big secret then?" Elphaba asked the two Munchkins who had just shut and locked the door.

"Turns out the Palace library has some very old books and we were able to find a few books on the myths and legends of Munchkinland. So according to legend, only the strongest can pull the clock. It is why seven boys were needed to haul it around. A prophecy states that when the boys leave the clock, a lion would be the next to pull it," Mopsi started as he and his brother took seats on the edge of Glinda's desk. Elphaba looked at the King of Forest.

"Not sure why I'd be doing that. There are no wild lions anymore so perhaps one of my clan?" Brrr wondered.

"Why a lion? Why not an elephant?" Elphaba asked.

"I could not say, but the next part is the one I think that's more important," Popsi said.

"Quite important. It is said that one born of two worlds was born inside the clock and that the progeny of that individual would also be born inside the clock. That progeny would not only rule Munchkinland but also all of Oz," Mopsi told them.

"Ummm what now?" Elphaba gave them a look.

"You were the one that was foretold about," Mopsi reminded her.

"Except as far as I know, I was born at home, just like my sister," the green woman said.

"Well neither of your fathers were upstanding gentlemen so I'm sure the story was you were born at home. Frex did not know you were a child of born of two worlds, but I suspect he would not have wanted to announce that you were born in a vehicle of a different religion. It was scandalous enough, in his mind, that you were green, but to have a Unionist have his child born in what amounts to a temple of a pleasure faith religion… I'm not even sure how your parents would have been there or why that would be the legend, but I can't think of anyone else born of two worlds," Mopsi said.

"I doubt there is anyone else, but I have news for you – I am definitely not pregnant and I most certainly will not be giving birth in a clock. There'd be no reason for me to be in Gillikin. Fiyero's parents would never have a possible future heir to the throne born outside of the Vinkus," Elphaba shook her head.

"Your child would have the ability to rule Munchkinland though. Technically speaking," Popsi pointed out.

"Say that is true. Despite the new government, say they could make a claim to that. How would they make a claim to leading all of Oz?" The green woman wondered.

"No idea. The legend doesn't get more specific," Mopsi admitted.

"But it is a legend. Doesn't make any of it true. Though regrettably, I could see the Munchkins wanting to destroy the clock to prevent being taken over by someone. They've been used and abused and they aren't in the mood," Brrr figured.

"Point well taken. Those that wanted Mombey in power wouldn't be kind to the idea of someone else taking over. Destroy the clock, destroy the prophesy," Elphaba nodded.

"So does that mean we need to go looking for it?" Popsi wondered.

"Negative. The last thing we need, while Glinda is not home, is to be wandering around out in the Gillikin attracting attention. As far as we know, everyone is safer with that thing hidden from view. Plus, we have no idea if Ugabu didn't curse the damn thing," the green woman shook her head.

"I would have to agree. We keep this amongst ourselves. We'll only worry about it if it becomes something to worry about. The clock cannot enact any of its own prophesies, it can only make them," Brrr said.

"What do we do in the meantime?" Popsi asked.

"Go about our usual business. Now, I have to go back to cheer up Sarah," Elphaba told them.

"Give her my best. I hope they catch the bastard who did that to her," Brrr smiled.

"I hope they do too. Lieutenant Dilek's men are on it, so I imagine we'll have good news soon," the green woman winked.
