Ash blinked in surprise as Kara returned, her steps brisk and her expression clearly annoyed, though she tried to mask it. "Hey, you're back!" he greeted her with his usual enthusiasm, though his observant nature quickly picked up on her mood. "Is everything okay?"
"I'm fine," Kara replied curtly, brushing off his question as she folded her arms, her tone making it clear she didn't want to talk about it. "Where to next?"
Ash frowned slightly, not entirely convinced, but decided not to press her further. "Well, Goldenrod City is close by," he said after a moment's thought. "It's been a while since I visited there, and there's always something fun to do."
Kara gave a curt nod, apparently satisfied with the answer. "Very well," she said, her voice clipped as she stepped closer to him. Before Ash could react, she effortlessly scooped him into her arms as if he weighed nothing. Pikachu, quick on the uptake, leaped onto her shoulder with ease.
"Whoa! A little warning next time, Kara!" Ash exclaimed, flailing slightly before settling into her grip.
"You're so whiny," Kara muttered, more to herself than anyone else, though there was a faint smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. With that, she launched into the sky, the wind whipping past them as they soared toward Goldenrod City.
Pikachu chirped happily, enjoying the view from Kara's shoulder, while Ash took a deep breath to steady himself. He glanced at Kara's focused expression and decided to let her have some space. Whatever's bothering her, I'll figure it out eventually, he thought to himself as Goldenrod City came into view on the horizon.
As the trio descended into Goldenrod City, the bustling metropolis sprawled before them with its glimmering lights and lively streets. Ash marveled at how much the city had grown since his last visit. Pikachu perched on his shoulder, twitching its ears curiously at the sounds of the busy town. Kara, however, quickly became the center of attention as her imposing appearance and armor drew stares and hushed whispers from the onlookers.
"Guess you're making quite the impression," Ash muttered, glancing at the gawking crowd.
Kara folded her arms and scowled. "Let them look. Their opinions are irrelevant to me." She brushed past the bystanders with a confident stride, her cape fluttering behind her.
Ash shrugged, deciding it was best to let her handle things her own way. "Alright, let's check out some places!" he said enthusiastically, taking the lead. However, after a few minutes of walking, his pace began to falter. He stopped in the middle of a street and scratched his head, looking around in confusion.
"Uh… this doesn't look familiar," Ash admitted sheepishly.
"Pika?" Pikachu tilted its head in confusion.
Kara arched an eyebrow, smirking slightly. "Don't tell me you've already gotten lost. Didn't you say you've been here before?"
Ash laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, yeah, but it's been a while, and the city's a lot bigger now. I don't remember it being this... complicated."
Kara chuckled, shaking her head. "You're hopeless," she said, her tone laced with amusement.
"Hey, I'm just a little rusty!" Ash protested, his cheeks flushing slightly. "Besides, I didn't think it would've changed this much."
"Mm-hmm," Kara replied with a smirk, clearly enjoying his predicament. "Maybe I should take over as navigator. I'd get us there in no time."
Ash sighed, glancing down a busy intersection as he tried to get his bearings. "Alright, smartypants, where do you suggest we go first?" Kara grinned but didn't answer immediately. She grabbed his arm and pulled him along towards something she noticed before they landed. It was Goldenrod Game Corner. "Ow! Okay, okay, no need to pull my arm, Kara!" Ash cried.
"Stop whining," Kara retorted, glancing back with a smirk. "You'd still be standing there looking clueless if I hadn't stepped in."
Ash groaned but didn't resist further as Kara led him toward a lively and colorful building adorned with neon lights. The sign above the entrance read Goldenrod Game Corner in bright, flashing letters. The cheerful music and sounds of jingling coins spilled out into the street, inviting passersby to step in and try their luck.
"The Game Corner?" Ash blinked in surprise.
"Seemed interesting," Kara said with a shrug. "And since you clearly have no idea where you're going, might as well check it out."
Ash scratched his cheek awkwardly. "Fair enough… but you do realize this isn't exactly a place for someone like you, right? I mean, it's more for trainers and—"
"I can handle myself," Kara cut him off, her smirk widening. "Besides, this 'Game Corner' looks like fun."
Before Ash could protest, she dragged him inside. The Game Corner was alive with trainers and enthusiasts crowding around rows of slot machines and arcade games, the room lit by the glow of screens and glittering lights. Kara paused to take it all in, raising an eyebrow at the peculiar human pastime.
Ash glanced nervously at her. "Uh, just so you know, you can't go breaking anything if you lose… or if you get frustrated."
Kara shot him a sharp look. "I'm not some temperamental child, Ash."
"Could've fooled me," Ash muttered under his breath.
"What was that?" Kara asked, narrowing her eyes.
"Nothing!" Ash said quickly, holding up his hands. Pikachu chuckled at the exchange, earning a playful poke from Ash.
"Fine," Kara said, walking over to one of the slot machines. "Show me how this works."
Moments later...
Ash returned to Kara's side, holding a small stack of coins in his hand. "Here," he said, handing her the first three coins.
Kara stared at them with a puzzled expression, tilting her head. "What am I supposed to do with these?" she asked, tapping one of the coins against the slot machine's glass surface.
Ash groaned and facepalmed. "No, Kara. Don't tap it on the glass! You put it here," he explained, pointing to the coin slot on the side of the machine.
Kara followed his instructions and inserted the coins, eyeing the lever with interest. Gripping it firmly, she yanked it downward with so much force that Ash winced.
"Whoa! Easy!" Ash exclaimed.
The machine jolted but still worked, spinning the reels. Kara leaned in, watching the screen intently as it stopped on a "7," a "Staryu," and a "Squirtle." She turned to Ash, her brows raised expectantly. "Did I win?"
Ash shook his head. "Nope. That's a dud."
Kara frowned, folding her arms. "This game is stupid. Give me more coins," she demanded.
Reluctantly, Ash handed over a few more coins. Kara quickly fed them into the machine and pulled the lever again, but the results remained the same—more dud combinations. Her frustration grew with each loss, and finally, she growled, clenching her fists.
"That's it! I'm smashing this thing!" she declared, raising her hand.
"Whoa, whoa!" Ash grabbed her wrist just in time, stopping her from making good on her threat. Kara flinched slightly at his touch, a faint blush creeping onto her cheeks before she glared at him.
"Hey! You need to stop being so touchy-touchy with me, human!" she warned, trying to sound firm despite her flustered expression.
Ash sighed, guiding her to sit back down. "And you need to chill out. It's just a game, Kara. Relax."
Kara puffed her cheeks in annoyance but reluctantly obeyed. "Fine. But this game is rigged."
"Here, let me help you." Ash grabbed another coin and gently guided her hand to insert it into the slot. Then, he placed his hand over hers on the lever.
"Take a deep breath and relax," he instructed.
Kara raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
"Just do it," Ash said with a small smile.
She rolled her eyes but complied, taking a deep breath before pulling the lever together with Ash. The reels spun, and both of them watched anxiously as the first Poké Ball image appeared, then a second, and finally a third.
The machine lit up and jingled. "We actually won!" Kara exclaimed, her face lighting up with excitement.
Ash chuckled. "Yeah, but it's not much. Slot machines don't give big payouts."
Kara shrugged, grinning as she collected the coins. "So what? It's about the thrill of winning!"
Ash laughed softly. "I guess you're right."
After leaving the Game Corner, Ash, Kara, and Pikachu headed to the Goldenrod Department Store, eager to explore its many levels. It was a bustling hub of activity, with bright signs and countless stores to check out.
Their first stop was the sports department. Kara, curious about the equipment, picked up a baseball and smirked at Ash. "Think you can catch this, Ash?" she teased.
Ash grinned, readying his stance. "Bring it on!"
Kara wound up and threw the ball with surprising force. The moment it hit Ash's glove, it knocked him clean off his feet. Pikachu winced as Ash groaned from the floor. "Maybe tone it down a little next time," Ash muttered, rubbing his sore hand.
Kara laughed, offering him a hand up. "Guess I don't know my own strength."
They moved on to the indoor arcade, where Ash suggested a game that caught his eye—a zombie Pokémon shooting game. Grabbing the plastic blasters, the two teamed up, blasting their way through waves of zombie Pokémon on the screen. Kara's competitive side quickly kicked in as she scored higher than Ash, much to her satisfaction.
"Admit it, I'm better at this than you," Kara said with a smirk.
Ash chuckled, shaking his head. "You're not bad, but I was letting you win!"
"Sure you were," she replied with a playful roll of her eyes.
After working up an appetite, the trio decided to grab some food at the department store café. As they waited for their order, the server, a bubbly young woman, squealed in excitement upon recognizing Ash.
"You're the Monarch!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling. "Can I please get your autograph?"
Ash smiled sheepishly and signed a napkin for her, while Kara crossed her arms and tapped her foot impatiently.
As the server handed over their food, she glanced between Ash and Kara, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "So, are you two on a date?"
Kara's eyes widened, and she nearly dropped her drink. "What?! No way!" she exclaimed, her face tinged with disbelief.
Ash turned red, laughing nervously. "No, no, we're just friends. Nothing like that."
The server giggled. "Sure, sure," she said with a wink before walking away.
Kara huffed, sitting back in her chair. "What's with people in this city jumping to conclusions?"
Ash smiled awkwardly, scratching the back of his head. "Yeah... crazy, huh?"
Pikachu snickered quietly, earning a playful glare from Kara as they dug into their food.
After finishing their meal, Ash, Kara, and Pikachu strolled through the bustling streets, each enjoying an ice cream cone. Kara marveled at the frozen dessert, holding it gingerly as if it were a precious artifact.
"This... is incredible," she admitted, taking another small bite of her cone. The cold treat made her eyes widen slightly in wonder.
Ash chuckled, amused by her almost childlike reaction. "You act like it's the first time you've had ice cream."
Kara shot him a glare over her cone, her cheeks slightly puffed. "Don't laugh, human. This is fascinating."
Pikachu snickered, licking his own cone while perched on Ash's shoulder. Before Kara could retort further, a familiar voice called out.
"Ash!"
Ash turned to the source and saw a figure running towards them. It was Whitney, the Goldenrod City Gym Leader. Her cheerful energy hadn't changed, though she seemed slightly older and more polished since their last meeting.
"Whitney! Hey—" Ash started, only to freeze mid-sentence as Whitney tripped over her own feet. Time seemed to slow as she fell forward, skidding face-first against the pavement. "—ney..." Ash winced, quickly running to her side as she groaned in pain.
"Ow, ow, ow..." Whitney muttered as she sat up, brushing dirt off her cheeks.
"You okay?" Ash asked, offering her a hand. She took it, standing up before immediately pulling him into a bone-crushing hug.
"Ash! Long time no see!" she exclaimed, her excitement undeterred by her clumsy entrance.
Kara flinched at the sudden show of affection. She stepped closer, narrowing her eyes slightly at Whitney.
Whitney finally let Ash go and turned to Kara, immediately taking note of her striking appearance. Her eyes lit up mischievously. "Ohhh, who's this? Is this your girlfriend, Ash?"
Kara stiffened, her face flushing slightly as her ice cream cone trembled in her hand. "Excuse me?!" she snapped, glaring at Whitney. "Absolutely not! What's with people and their ridiculous assumptions?!"
Ash's face turned bright red as he awkwardly scratched the back of his head. "Whitney, she's just a friend. This is Kara. Kara, this is Whitney—Goldenrod's Gym Leader."
Whitney grinned, seemingly unfazed by Kara's reaction. "Well, nice to meet you, Kara. You've got quite the fiery personality! I like it!"
Kara huffed, taking a defiant bite of her ice cream.
Ash sighed, silently hoping this wouldn't escalate further.
