Once Johnny returned home, he settled back into his regular life, his mind occasionally drifting back to that one night with Kevin. He'd thought about calling him on more than one occasion, but something always stopped him or otherwise distracted him from doing so.
Tonight, however, he found himself at loose ends. He'd had a date planned, but she'd canceled at the last minute. Just as well, Johnny supposed. He wasn't all that into her, though there was no reason he shouldn't have been. She was pretty, blonde, petite, with a bright smile that always caught his attention whenever he brought a patient into Rampart.
He could head out as he usually did when he found himself alone. He'd have little trouble finding some company, and there was a good chance he could get laid in the process. But for some reason, that idea held little appeal tonight.
Kevin's phone number was still on that slip of paper next to the phone, right where he'd left it after emptying his pockets upon his return from the convention. That had been, what, two, nearly three weeks now?
To be fair, Kevin hadn't called him in all that time, either. Maybe Kevin had forgotten all about him. Maybe he'd just lost interest and moved on. That was his prerogative, Johnny supposed. And even if Johnny did call him, there was no guarantee Kevin would even pick up the phone. Maybe he was working. Maybe he was otherwise occupied.
Well, there was only one way to find out.
He dialed the number, waiting while it rang once, twice, three times. Finally, someone picked up. "Hello?"
"Kevin?" Johnny hated the way he sounded. He cleared his throat to cover up his sudden case of nerves. "It's, uh, Johnny...uh, John. From the convention?"
Kevin responded with a quiet chuckle that sent something through Johnny. "Oh yes. I remember. I was wondering when you were going to get around to calling me."
"Well, uh, you could have called me, you know." Johnny told him. "Phone works both ways."
"I could have." Kevin acknowledged in a casual tone. "But I figured you'd get around to it eventually. I assume you're free tonight."
"Kinda looks that way." Johnny tried to reply in an equally casual tone. "Suppose you are, too."
"I am." Kevin responded. "And I could have that hot tub all fired up by the time you get here."
It had been a tough shift, and Johnny had followed that up by helping out Roy with some yard work. He had to admit, the thought of relaxing in that hot tub sounded pretty damn good. Not to mention whatever else might happen.
"Alright, yeah." Johnny told him. "Give me some directions and I'll be there."
Johnny wrote down the directions Kevin gave him before saying his goodbyes and hanging up. He still couldn't believe he was doing this, but it beat the hell out of staying here. And if it went badly, he'd just come home and never have to see him again.
That was hard to imagine, considering how that night in San Francisco had gone.
It took a little longer than he'd planned, but he finally found the small house and pulled into the driveway. The porch light was on, along with some lights inside the house. It was almost eerily quiet as Johnny stepped down from his vehicle and started toward the front door.
He had to admit that he was questioning his decision a bit. If he had known just how far out Kevin lived, he might have suggested meeting up somewhere a little more public. But Johnny wasn't one to back out of this kind of thing once he'd committed to it, so with a bit of trepidation, he knocked on the door.
The door swung open, and he was greeted by that same smile that had drawn him in back at that convention. "Well, hello there. Come on in."
Kevin was already in nothing but a pair of snug-fitting swim trunks, bare feet padding across the floor as Johnny stepped inside. The house, what he could see of it, seemed comfortable and cozy, not all that different from Johnny's own apartment.
"Bathroom's right down that little hallway if you want to get changed." Kevin called out over his shoulder. "Beer's in the fridge. I'll meet you in the hot tub."
That was all the incentive Johnny needed. He headed off to change before finding his way through the house, stopping at the refrigerator for a bottle of beer and opening it with the opener Kevin had left out on the counter before crossing to the slider door that led outside.
"Watch your step." Kevin's voice called out. "I keep meaning to get more lighting installed out here. Just haven't gotten around to it yet."
"I don't mind." Johnny answered as he carefully found his way to the hot tub, just able to make out Kevin in the low light. He made his way up the steps and eased himself in, taking a seat and letting the water flow and bubble around him.
It was relaxing, and Johnny let out a brief sigh as he sunk down a little further. This wasn't a bad way to spend an evening, even if nothing else came out of this. On the other hand, it was almost the perfect setting for anything else that might come up.
"Feels good, doesn't it?" Kevin had moved in a little closer.
Johnny took a long pull off his beer and set it behind him before replying. "Yeah. Pretty nice thing you've got going out here."
"It's been a long process." Kevin told him. "Bought the place with the proceeds from when my ex-wife and I split and sold our house. The house was a mess, and this deck wasn't here, either."
Johnny immediately caught the first part. "Ex-wife?"
Kevin let out a short laugh. "Yes, ex-wife. It's a rather long story."
"We've got time."
"And I've piqued your curiosity." Kevin picked up on the part left unspoken. "It's not all that interesting, to be honest. Just doing what I was supposed to do, that's all. Get married, buy a house, have some kids, not be a flaming homosexual. Needless to say, it didn't exactly work out."
"Yeah, suppose not being into women would put a damper on the whole marriage thing." Johnny responded. "See, I probably could get hitched if I wanted to. I don't know. Something about being stuck with one person for the rest of my life doesn't sit right with me."
"Yes, I suppose it'd be tough to choose." Kevin replied smoothly, shifting so that he could stretch out an arm behind Johnny, lightly tracing down Johnny's shoulder and arm with his fingers. "I admit I've spread myself around quite a bit since the divorce. Probably making up for lost time or something, I don't know."
"Nothing wrong with that." Johnny reached behind him for his beer, finishing off what was left of the bottle before setting it back down. "Don't see any reason to settle down, you know?"
"Hmm." Kevin responded quietly, moving in even closer so that his thigh was pressed up against Johnny's. "Can't say I'm looking to settle down, but I might if I meet the right guy."
Johnny winced internally at that but managed a short laugh instead. "Well, uh, I'm pretty sure I'm not the right guy for that."
"That's okay." Kevin answered, leaning over to kiss him lightly. "You're the right guy for now."
Johnny caught him before he could pull away, curling his hand around the back of Kevin's neck and kissing him hard. Kevin let out a sharp noise and stiffened slightly before relaxing, and Johnny shifted slightly before running the pads of his fingers up the inside of Kevin's thigh.
He almost immediately found the edge of Kevin's swim trunks, could feel the half-hard flesh underneath. Johnny slid his hand underneath, slowly stroking, feeling the flesh swell as Kevin let out a rough groan.
It wasn't long before Kevin's hand was doing the same, except he was stroking Johnny through the material of his swim trunks. The effect was the same, and Johnny shifted as his swim trunks became uncomfortably tight.
"Take those damn things off." Kevin broke away long enough to growl roughly against Johnny's mouth. "They're in the way."
Normally Johnny would have resisted something that sounded so much like a direct order, but something about the way it came out of Kevin's mouth broke down what little resistance Johnny had, and he wasted no time taking off his swim trunks and tossing them over the side. "Better?"
"Much." Kevin picked up right where he left off, his fingers curving around Johnny's completely hardened flesh and stroking, his thumb brushing the tip. Johnny was doing his best to do the same, but he was having a hell of a time concentrating.
He instead settled for stroking Kevin through the material, feeling it swell once again, the tip poking out through the leg, and Johnny brushed his thumb along it with every stroke.
"God, that's good." Kevin murmured roughly. "That's so good. Don't stop."
Johnny had no intention of doing so, even as he got closer and closer, the sensation building until he couldn't hold back anymore, letting go with a shudder and a rough groan as he buried his face against Kevin's shoulder.
"That's it, that's it." Kevin's hand stroked the back of Johnny's head. "Just like that."
It wasn't long until Kevin twitched under his touch, letting out a long groan as his whole body tensed up before relaxing and pressing a kiss to Johnny's forehead. "Hope that was worth the drive."
Johnny couldn't help letting out a short laugh. "Yeah, it was."
"Good." Kevin didn't seem to want to let him go, and Johnny couldn't say he was in much of a hurry to leave. He was warm and relaxed, content to rest against Kevin's shoulder for the time being.
"You want another beer?" Kevin asked.
"Sure." Johnny answered lazily.
Kevin kissed Johnny's temple before pulling back and pushing himself out of the hot tub. "Don't go anywhere. I'll be right back."
Johnny shifted a bit so that he could rest his head against the wall of the hot tub, letting the warmth sink in as he looked up at the sky. A few clouds drifted across the night sky, occasionally obscuring the stars that still shone brightly. He supposed he should have turned down the second beer and made up some excuse to get the hell out of here. On the other hand, he had the entire night at his disposal and the possibility of at least one more round with Kevin. Might as well stick around.
The sound of the slider door made Johnny turn his head, and he spotted Kevin padding across the deck with two bottles in his hand. He knelt down and held out one to Johnny, and he took it before taking a long drink.
Johnny was very aware of Kevin easing in right behind him, clearly having taken off his own trunks, and he started to move out of the way before Kevin lightly grasped his shoulder. "No need to move. There's plenty of room."
Soon they settled in again, and Johnny rested his head against Kevin's shoulder as he took another drink of his beer and stared up at the stars. It occurred to him that perhaps he was getting a little too comfortable, and the thought made something clutch deep in his chest. This wasn't how these things were supposed to go. He was supposed to get what he was after and get out. He wasn't supposed to get to know anyone too well, get too close. That was a surefire way to get his heart broken, and he had no desire to put himself in that position.
Still, there was something about all of this that was oddly comforting, an oasis of quiet in the chaos that made up so much of his life. Admittedly, some of that chaos was of his own doing, and his life would be a hell of a lot easier if he could just shut down his attraction to men and find a nice girl to settle down with. It was ludicrous to think he could settle down with a man. The world just wasn't ready for that, and the thought of being that open about his life scared the hell out of him.
"You're awfully quiet." Kevin's voice broke into his thoughts.
"Just resting." Johnny opted for a more casual response. No need to bare his soul to someone he might never see again.
Kevin laughed quietly as his hands curved over Johnny's shoulders, his thumbs finding an especially tight spot on his neck. "You'd better. We've got a whole night ahead of us."
"Oh yeah?" Johnny couldn't help but be intrigued at that.
"Mm-hmm." Kevin pulled one hand away, and Johnny could hear him swallow and set the bottle back down with a distinct clink before he returned to kneading Johnny's shoulders. "See, I've got this very nice bed that takes a pounding almost as well as you do."
Johnny immediately felt the heat rush through him at the memory, though he tried to cover it by taking another drink of his beer. Another thought occurred to him as he leaned back a little and lightly stroked Kevin's thigh under the water. "Well…was kinda thinking about, uh, returning the favor."
"Oh?" Kevin didn't seem opposed to the idea.
"Yeah." Johnny once again tried to sound casual as he traced the inside of Kevin's thigh with his thumb.
"Hmm. Well." Kevin's hands slid from Johnny's shoulders to his back to around his chest as he pressed a kiss into Johnny's neck. "I suppose I shouldn't make assumptions about you. And it has been a while since I've, well, received."
Johnny finished off his beer and reached back to set down the bottle, though it didn't land quite right, and he could hear it fall over and roll off to parts unknown.
"Don't worry about it." Kevin told him quietly.
"Done." Johnny responded, closing his eyes as Kevin's mouth continued its journey up Johnny's neck near his ear. He found an especially sensitive spot, his tongue flicking out and sending a shudder through Johnny. "Ah, damn."
"Something wrong?" Kevin's tone held a teasing note as he wrapped himself more fully around Johnny.
"Nah." Johnny was having a hard time forming a cohesive thought. "Just…uh…forget it."
Kevin merely laughed quietly, never letting go of Johnny as he found more spots along his neck. It was a damn good thing Kevin had a good hold on him. It was the only thing keeping Johnny from going underwater.
"How about that bed?" Kevin murmured in his ear.
"Ready whenever you are." Johnny answered roughly.
"Oh, I am very ready." Kevin left one more kiss on the back of Johnny's neck before releasing him and pushing himself out of the hot tub, Johnny not far behind, scrambling to catch up.
He followed Kevin through the house, finally catching up with him at the doorway of the bedroom, catching him around the waist and drawing in close. "Gotcha."
"Sure did." Kevin replied with a short laugh. "Now, what are you going to do about it?"
"You'll see." Johnny murmured, bringing one hand to rest on Kevin's hip while he pressed a kiss to the nape of his neck. He managed to guide them both toward the bed, pulling back just enough to let Kevin climb up as Johnny soon followed suit.
Kevin reached for the bedside table, opening up the drawer and finding a tube to hand to Johnny. Johnny made quick work of it, squirting some lube out on his fingers before slowly working his way in, pausing as he heard Kevin's breath catch. "Too much?"
"No." The word came out in one breath as Kevin shifted so that he pushed against Johnny's fingers. "Keep going."
There was something about having this man squirming under him, almost entirely at his mercy, that sent a thrill through Johnny. He rested a hand on Kevin's back, feeling the muscle flex under his skin as he pushed hard against Johnny's fingers, opening further and further. Johnny vaguely wondered just how much Kevin could take, but maybe now wasn't the time to test that. Besides, he wanted give as good as he'd gotten, the thought of driving hard into him further only heightening his desire.
Kevin's breaths were growing shorter, his fingers curling in the covers as he met every thrust of Johnny's fingers with one of his own. He was good and ready, that much was obvious. Johnny slid out his fingers and started to give himself a few quick strokes as Kevin let out a brief moan into the pillow.
"Take it easy." Johnny told him, shifting before he slowly entered him. He could feel Kevin tense up briefly, and Johnny paused, rubbing his back in slow circles before starting again.
This time he broke through, evoking a rough groan and a shudder from Kevin, and Johnny paused again for a moment to allow both of them to settle. "Okay?"
"Oh yeah." Kevin responded in a ragged voice. "Don't stop."
Johnny braced his hands against Kevin's hips to steady himself before he got going. It took him a few minutes to find his rhythm, but soon enough the only sounds in the room were their rough and ragged breaths and their bodies coming together. He wanted to hold back, but this felt too damn good to stop, and it wasn't long before he unloaded, his fingers digging into Kevin's hips as the sensation coursed through him until he relaxed with a rough sigh.
Kevin was still breathing heavily, his back slick with sweat, and it took Johnny a moment to realize he wasn't done yet. He could just reach him, finding hard flesh and stroking along its length, evoking another sharp breath and a shudder.
"Hold on, got a better idea." Johnny told him as he pulled out. "Okay, just lay back."
Kevin rolled to his back, and Johnny almost immediately took him into his mouth, taking him as far as he could go, and Kevin arched upward, getting a good grip on his hair as Johnny continued working at him, one hand spread out across his belly.
"Johnny, babe, I…ah, fuck." Kevin managed to get out, his whole body going rigid as he shot into Johnny's mouth, and it was all he could do to catch most of it before Kevin finally relaxed under him, letting go of his hair and stroking the top of his head. "Sorry. Tried to warn you."
"It's alright." Johnny answered, licking up the last few stray drops before shifting so that he was kneeling between Kevin's legs. "Not like you could control it, right?"
Kevin pushed himself to a sitting position and kissed Johnny lightly. "Well, sometimes I can. Not this time, though."
Johnny couldn't help feeling a little bit of pride at that. He placed his hands on Kevin's thighs for a moment, stroking lightly. "Suppose I'll clean up a little."
"You know where the bathroom is." Kevin told him. "I need to go shut down the hot tub. Back in a bit."
They went their separate ways, and Johnny found a washcloth, wetting it before wiping himself off. He should get dressed and go. They'd had their fun, and Johnny was sure Kevin would want the place to himself. Besides, he slept better in his own bed.
A tap on the doorframe pulled him out of his thoughts, and he looked in the mirror to see Kevin leaning in the doorway, his arms folded over his chest. "Heading out?"
"Uh, yeah, I was going to." Johnny answered as he rinsed out the washcloth. "You know, long drive home."
"Right." Kevin moved closer, resting his hands on Johnny's shoulders and massaging them lightly. "You know, it is getting late. You're welcome to stay if you want. What with the long drive and all. Might get a decent breakfast out of it."
Something clutched in Johnny at the thought. He shouldn't do this. He should just get dressed and be on his way. Hell, he'd already gotten more than he'd bargained for. No sense pushing his luck.
But there was something about the way Kevin was looking at him and touching him that was making it damn hard to turn him down.
"Yeah, alright." Johnny found himself saying. "I'll stay."
A smile slowly spread across Kevin's face as he squeezed Johnny's shoulders one more time. "Good."
They soon settled into bed, Kevin on his stomach, while Johnny lay on his back. It was an awfully comfortable bed, and Johnny soon found his eyes slowly drifting shut.
Maybe this was a mistake, staying, but in the moment, it felt right. Whether he'd feel differently in the morning was a problem for another time.
