Update time!

I know it's a bit later but I didn't have the internet for the last few days so I couldn't update it then.

Also, why didn't anyone tell me that I was writing Ilia's name wrong for the last six chapters or so?

How will the tournament work, by the way?
There's a huge amount o teams from what I can see, and I don't think we will have the time to do a proper based tournament with all of them.

The_Organizer (Original Poster)
Replied On Jul 5th AW95:
That's simple.
We will start with an elimination round during which everyone will play at the same time three different matches (by everyone, I mean as many people as possible given the computers we have access to), then every team who won more matches than they lost will get to play in the proper ladder tournament.
Like that we will be able to have an interesting tournament and let everyone play at the same time, as well.

It was finally time!

The tournament was about to begin; everything had been prepared, and Ilia was registered to play. There was hardly anything that could go wrong at this point, as everything was already set into motion.

She was even in Atlas already, too.

The city was glamorous and looked more refined than it actually was; however, it also seemed a bit more empty than Ilia expected. It wasn't deserted or anything in that manner, but it certainly wasn't as packed as Mantle was.

It was weird; she thought the capital of the kingdom she lived in would be a bit more crowded.

In fact, the city probably should have been even more crowded right now considering that the tournament was about to happen.

Was the tournament not exactly as big of a deal as she thought it would be?

The game mode they were going to be playing wasn't exactly a truly big thing yet, after all.

Ilia shrugged a little to herself.

Whatever; it didn't matter that the Arena of the Great wasn't exactly a huge deal yet. She was certain that it wasn't going to take long for it to get the real respect it deserved, especially after an event like that.

A smile made its way onto her face.

She couldn't wait tow in the whole thing.

It wasn't going to be easy—she had no idea how good her teammates were at the game, and she certainly would have preferred being on her own team with Jaune and Snow instead—but she believed she could win this despite all the disadvantages placed on her.

Regardless of anything else, the tournament was only a regional event, and she was arguably the best player in the whole world. If she couldn't win the tournament with her odds, then nobody could.

With confidence in herself unshaken, she nodded to herself with determination.

Her victory was almost assured.

She only needed to find her teammates first.

"Where are those guys?" She murmured to herself as she glanced over the people that were going in the rough direction of the internet cafe that was hosting the tournament.

Despite the fact that her team had promised to gather in front of the cafe before the tournament began, Ilia hadn't seen anyone who could be her teammate since she arrived in Atlas yet. She knew where and when they were supposed to meet, but she couldn't see any one of them.

As such, the only thing she could really do was wait for her teammates and search for them whenever she could.

Hopefully, she would manage to find them before the tournament began.

The fact that she only really knew one of her teammates well enough to recognise them in a crowd didn't really help her search at all.

Their team really should have set up at least one in-person meeting before the tournament. If they did something like that, she most likely wouldn't have been dealing with such issues right now.

She sincerely doubted that she was the only one who had such a problem on her team.

"Hey, Ila! You're here!" A voice called out to her as she walked closer to the cafe in her search for her teammates. "Come here, quick; we need you to enter the cafe! The tournament's about to start!

Ilia had to stop herself from grinding her teeth.

Great, they've promised to play with each other a whole month ago, and those guys still couldn't bother to remember her name. She really should be more offended by that than she actually was.

A quiet sigh escaped her.

At the very least, she had finally managed to find her team.

"I'm here." She said as she walked up to her teammates.

The people she would be playing in the tournament with didn't look all that impressive. They were roughly her age, with one team member being a little bit older than the rest and one a little bit younger.

They didn't look particularly well trained, either. If they ever ended up in a fight, she was pretty sure she could easily handle all three of them at the same time while not feeling even a little bit winded. Then again, it probably applied to almost every other team as well.

Ilia doubted there were a lot of huntsmen in training among the ATG players in Atlas.

If she was here with Jaune and Snow, her real team, they would have looked incredibly impressive among every other team.

They would have been the stars of the show.

She bit back a sigh.

No, she came here to play in the tournament; there was no time to wallow in melancholy over what could have been.

At least there was another girl among her teammates, so she wasn't stuck in a team with only boys.

There was no way she would have enjoyed the tournament too much in that case.

"Great, since everybody's here, let's enter the tournament!" One of her teammates, the boy who invited her to the team first, exclaimed loudly as she arrived next to them. "We've got matches to play and games to win."

Ilia nodded her head with the rest of her teammates.

It seemed that they have silently decided to put the boy as their team leader.

She didn't mind it all that much.

Sure, she probably was a good enough player to take the lead of the whole team without an issue; however, she wasn't really all that interested in leading a team. When she played with the winning team, it was usually Snow or Jaune who led them, never her.

It simply wasn't all that appealing to her.

"What's the name of your team?" A staff member at the entrance asked them before they could enter.

Ilia was tempted to introduce her team as the winning team, but she stopped herself from doing that. Neither of her friends were here to complete the team, and she was pretty sure that using that name would make her team a target for everyone else.

There were some battles that didn't need to be fought.

It was best to leave the naming of the team to her temporary leader.

She hoped the boy wouldn't name them something stupid.

"We're called Achieved Guys!" The team leader said with a confident grin on his face.

Well, it looked like her hopes were shattered pretty quickly this time around.

Their name wasn't even original!

They were named after some half-decent boy band she didn't even listen to!

The staff member sighed, equally as disappointed with their name as she was.

"Ah yes, you guys. I genuinely thought that this team was a joke." The person murmured with a tired tone before speaking up. "Anyway, may I ask for all of your nicknames? You technically can enter without them since all the games will be played on the standardised accounts, but we need some names for the commentators to refer to you."

Ilia couldn't help but blink at the staff member's words.

Didn't they already have their nicknames from their registration last month?

Why would they need their nicknames again?

It seemed that this tournament wasn't going to be as well organised as she thought it would be.

"Of course." Their team leader started their introduction while she was busy thinking about the organisation of the event. "Our nicknames are 1FireyFighter1, BlindSniper09, TheFrozenSiren, and Chameleon Girl."

The staff member nodded their head and wrote all their nicknames down on their Scroll.

"Alright, you can enter." They said, not bothering to look at them anymore.

As their nicknames for the whole tournament were finalised and they were granted access to the tournament, Ilia turned towards her team leader with an aghast expression on her face.

"I'm sorry, did you really call me Chameleon Girl?" She asked while putting stress on the nickname she supposedly had. "It sounds beyond stupid, and I'm pretty sure it's almost racist. Why would you do such a thing?!"

The team leader looked at her with confusion in his eyes.

"That's what you are, though, isn't it?" The annoying boy said. "You're the chameleon girl. I don't understand why you would be annoyed by that. It's certainly better than trying to steal the nickname belonging to a member of the winning team. Seriously, I don't know how you thought that it was a good idea back during our practice matches, Ila."

Ilia huffed in annoyance.

She wasn't stealing anyone's nicknames!

That nickname belonged to her and her only; nobody was stealing anything.

To top it all off, the boy didn't even bother to use her real name correctly, either.

"First of all, my name is Ilya, not Ila, got it?" She started, and upon seeing the boy rolling his eyes at her, she continued with an annoyed tone. "Second of all, if you really didn't like my nickname so much, you could have just told me, and I would have chosen something different. You really didn't need to choose a name for me yourself; actually, why did you even do that in the first place?! That's not something you're supposed to do!"

The boy only nodded his head dismissively.

"Whatever you say, Il-Ilya." He said, almost butchering her name again. "Let's just get into the cafe and play some matches for now, alright? We don't have the entire day to win this tournament."

Ilia groaned.

Great, it appeared that she wasn't going to resolve this issue anytime soon.

It really reminded her why she stuck with her friends instead of those pricks. She dreaded to imagine what sort of reaction they would have if she came to them with real problems, if they were so dismissive of her as a baseline.

A shudder went through her as she imagined how such a conversation would go.

Thankfully, her real friends were nothing like that.

"Whatever, let's just go and win this stupid tournament." She said with a scoff.

The boy smiled.

"I'm glad that we agree."

Ignoring the boy's words, Ilia entered the cafe.

She had a tournament to win, and she wasn't going to let some annoying teammates prevent her from doing that.

There would be time to complain about everything to her friends later, anyway.

(...)

The stream of the tournament was surprisingly tame.

There weren't any grand displays of wealth, and the commentators seemed like quite ordinary people, as well. It wasn't anything like the high-class parties that were so common in the city of Atlas.

In comparison, the tournament didn't seem to be a big deal at all.

Of course, that perception of a small scale changed the moment one saw the statistics of the stream on the website.

There were thousands of people, and the interesting part of the tournament hasn't even started yet.

Weiss was pretty sure that by the time the elimination part of the tournament ended, the number of people watching it would be much higher than the number of people who would ever watch some of her concerts.

The tournament was bound to gather dozens of thousands of viewers by the end!

A smile formed on her face.

She couldn't wait to see her friend be the main star of such an event.

"There sure are a lot of people playing right now." Jaune said. "Snow, Whitley, have you guys spotted Chammy yet? I can't seem to find her among all the games that are being played right now."

Weiss hummed quietly.

Despite looking for her friend the entire elimination round, she hadn't been able to find Chammy among all the players, either. There were simply too many people playing at the same time to find her.

The fact that all the games were currently shown in small windows at the same time didn't help her at all.

It wasn't like she was concerned about not seeing her friend the entire tournament, though.

Although the elimination round might have been quite chaotic, the following rounds were going to be far more structured and organised. She was certain that she would be able to find her friend at that point.

There was no way Chammy wouldn't be able to join the main part of the tournament, no matter how subpar the rest of her team might be.

"I haven't seen your friend, Jaune." Whitley said. "They might not stream a couple games to save the resources; maybe her game is among them? Although I haven't seen her on the list of registered players, either."

"Wait, what?" Jaune asked.

Weiss widened her eyes a little in surprise, as well.

Why wasn't her friend among all the registered players?

Did she fail to show up or something?

"Maybe she signed up with a different name?" Noir offered a solution to their question. "You know, to hide her identity as a member of the winning team. It's not like everyone wants to be a celebrity. That would be a good idea to keep a low profile, as well."

Weiss frowned.

That didn't sound like her friend at all.

"I don't think Chammy would do something like that." She said. "If anything, I'm pretty sure she would be more likely to brag about who she is openly than do something like that. It would make the tournament more interesting for her."

"Yeah." Jaune agreed. "That sounds like something more up her alley."

Whitley let out a quiet hum in response to their words as he searched through the list of registered players once again.

"No, I think Jaune's sister is right about that." The boy said.

Weiss turned to her brother.

"What do you mean by that?" She asked.

"You said that your friend's nickname was MineChammy09, right?" Whitley asked back in response.

Weiss nodded slowly.

"In that case, I think I found your friend." The boy said. "She goes by the nickname Chameleon Girl. She should be playing a game right now, so we can see how she plays to check whether it's her or not."

Weiss raised one of her eyebrows.

"Chameleon Girl? Really?" She made her doubts very clear.

"That doesn't sound like something she would choose at all." Jaune shared her opinion.

Whitely shrugged.

"If I'm reading the stream correctly, then her game should be the one that's streamed in the bottom right corner." The boy said while pointing at the Scroll in his hand. "You can check whether it's really her or not by watching it."

Weiss turned towards the game with a slight frown on her face.

Was her friend really the one who played there?

She watched the game with clear doubt in her mind; however, as the game progressed further and further, that doubt started to slowly diminish. After a while, it became clear to her that the Chameleon Girl had to be Chammy.

The clear skill and knowledge she was showcasing, along with the overly aggressive playstyle, were an obvious tell that it was Chammy and not anyone else.

There wasn't a single other player who played like that.

"Huh, it really is her." Jaune remarked.

"I told you." Whitley said.

Weiss only nodded her head.

There was no need for her to say anything else when everything was already explained. It was pretty obvious by now that it really was her friend, and there was no need to argue about that.

That, however, only made her curious about the reason behind that different nickname.

Was it really to keep a low profile?

If it was because of that, then why did she choose such a nickname instead of literally anything else? Surely, her friend would have been easily able to come up with a better name for herself.

She looked at the game a bit closer only to see her friend easily deal with a team fight and push further into enemy base.

At least it looked like her friend was winning.

It was to be expected, though. No matter under what name she was playing, Chammy was still a member of the winning team; the three of them were simply far better than most other players.

"She does seem to be doing quite well for herself there, especially for someone playing without her real team." Blanc said as she watched the game progress. "How far do you think she will go in the tournament?"

"She'll win, of course." Weiss answered immediately.

Blanc hummed in response.

"I wouldn't be so sure of that." The girl said.

Weiss raised her eyebrow.

"Why do you think that?" She asked.

"Her teammates don't seem to be that good." Noir said, explaining for her sister. "In fact, I don't think those guys are treating the tournament seriously at all. They are barely even playing properly."

Weiss frowned as she looked back at the game.

The stream of that specific match focused mainly on Chammy's perspective—the girl was the most interesting player to watch there, after all—but from the minimap in the corner of the game, one could easily see that the situation wasn't really that one-sided.

Despite the fact that Chammy appeared to be winning every team fight she was in, her enemies still seemed to be able to push through the lanes rather easily.

If Weiss couldn't see how well her friend played that game, she would have been really concerned about her chances of victory.

It was a far closer game than it should have been.

"It's a pity we can't control the camera work ourselves here." Whitley remarked suddenly. "The way they are presenting everything here makes the games hard to follow. I'm positive I would have done it better if I had the chance to do it."

Weiss turned to her brother again.

Huh, she didn't expect him to actually get invested in the tournament.

Sure, she invited him to watch it with her and to meet her friends, but she was aware that, unlike the rest of them, the boy had scarcely any connection to the game mode itself. If anything, she expected him to be more interested in conversations between them than the actual tournament.

Her eyes almost sparkled from excitement.

Could her brother become as invested in gaming as she had?!

"I think they are just doing the bare minimum for the elimination round, only." Jaune said, referring to her brother's previous remark. "They will focus more on the camera work the moment the next round starts, for sure."

Whitley hummed in doubt.

"We will see." The younger boy said.

Weiss quickly shook her head and focused back on the game.

The camera work didn't matter to her all that much; she was far more invested in how well her friend was doing in the tournament instead.

Thankfully, she didn't need to worry all that much about that, either.

Despite her team's clear lack of skill, Chammy had managed to steadily win game after game. It didn't take a long time for Chammy's team to earn themselves a place in the proper tournament bracket!

A couple of elimination games had to be cut short in order to save time, but in the end the teams were decided, and the results were out!

The two commentators responsible for the stream were finally about to do their job, too.

"Attention all viewers, I know we have been quite quiet for the last half an hour or so, but this ends now. The elimination round has finished, and we will now do our best to commentate for you on the entirety of the bracket part of the tournament!" One of the two commentators said in an announcing tone; his voice was loud and easily gathered attention.

Weiss thought it was a bit too dramatic.

"Ugh, that commentator clearly enjoys hearing his own voice far too much." Her brother complained loudly, sharing her opinion on the matter. "Why did he start this monologue so serious, as well? It's an unofficial event for a game. There is next to no reason to be so serious about it!"

"Shh! The teams are about to be announced." Noir shushed the younger boy.

Whitley grumbled quietly in response.

Weiss giggled to herself at her brother's reaction.

The younger boy shot her a glare a moment later.

She moved a finger up to her mouth to signal to her brother to stay quiet.

They could argue about it later, maybe during one of the matches that Chammy wouldn't be playing in. Now, she was curious about all the teams that her friend was going to be playing against.

It also wouldn't hurt to learn what sort of name the team her friend was playing with had chosen for themselves.

"Alright, let's get into announcing the teams then." The other commentator said. "There are eight teams that have made their way to the bracket part of the tournament. All of them had shown that they are the most skilled players that have chosen to participate in this tournament. Those teams are Team Solid Ice, Team PRME, Young Workers, The Victorious, Team Hidden Green, The Journeymen, Team SHRK, and The Achieved Guys!"

When each of the teams taking part in the bracket part of the tournament was named, the stream had shown some of their highlights from the eliminations. The names of all members of those teams were shown as well.

It was because of that they were able to identify which team was Chammy's.

As her friend's team was revealed, however, Weiss couldn't help but blink a couple times in confusion.

Was that really the name her friend's team had chosen for itself?

Couldn't they have chosen anything else!?

(...)

Ilia slumped onto a seat.

After three games of giving her absolute best, she had finally managed to carry her team past the elimination round.

It was almost a miracle.

When the tournament began, she thought that getting into the proper tournament rounds would have been easy. There wasn't a team she wouldn't be able to turn into a professional team with her skill alone, or so she thought.

The reality turned out to be completely different.

Her teammates were absolute buffoons!

Seriously, she had no idea why her teammates decided to play in the tournament, considering how awful they were at the very thing they were competing in. They barely even knew the rules of the game!

Did those guys come here solely to be made fun of!?

She bit back a sigh.

The idea of winning the tournament seemed less achievable now than it ever had been.

In all honesty, she probably would be satisfied even if she only managed to get to the finals. She didn't need to win the whole tournament. It wasn't like she was playing under her true nickname, after all.

There wouldn't be any consequences if she lost in the end.

At worst, she would simply have to deal with Jaune acting far too smug for a week or two.

It was the way she most certainly would have acted if the situations were reversed.

A quiet sigh escaped her in the end.

Who was she kidding?

If there was one thing she knew about Jaune from all the years that she knew him, it was that he didn't actually act like her in situations like those. If anything, it would have been far more believable to see Snow acting like that instead.

Thankfully, the fellow girl of her friend group didn't have anything against her competing in the tournament in the first place.

It meant that the consequences of not winning the tournament were practically nonexistent.

The only thing at stake was her own pride.

Ilia glanced to the side to look at her teammates sitting in front of their computers.

Unfortunately, it looked like her pride was going to take a bigger hit than she was preparing for. It didn't seem like she had the chance to even make it to the finals with a team like the one she was on.

One of her teammates was literarily taking selfies in front of their computer at the moment.

It wasn't the time for that!

Their first match was about to start; they should be going over strategies and preparing for the game right now. There was no way they would be able to win that match without doing their absolute best.

They weren't even choosing good characters to play as; they have basically chosen to use random ones!

Was she the only one treating the tournament seriously here?

She was about to scold her teammate and tell them to act a bit more serious when suddenly a chiming sound echoed through the cafe and the commentator's voice followed.

"Both teams have already chosen their characters and are about to start their match!" The commentator's voice echoed through the cafe. "Achieved Guys picked an unusual combination of characters; however, it worked for them in the elimination round. Will it be good enough to take care of the meta picks that were chosen by their opponents, Team Solid Ice? We are about to see! Let us begin!"

The game started with their entire team being dropped into their base.

Normally, when a game started, every player would stay in the base for a moment or two to buy starting items. It was difficult to contest a lane without anything to boost your character, and the start of the game was also incredibly important.

There wasn't a single team that would want to risk playing an early game without any items.

It wasn't the case for Ilia's team, however.

All of her teammates immediately rushed towards the lanes the moment they could control their characters; they didn't even think about it. The lanes they have chosen seemed to be decided at random as well.

Ilia groaned tiredly.

Of course it wasn't anything new to her; her teammates had been doing the exact same thing for the last three games they've played, and it always led to a terrible position to play the game in.

The repeat of that strategy was something she should have expected.

She still held a sliver of hope that it wouldn't be the case for the actual bracket matches, though.

"Alright, I'll just have to go to the forest and hopefully salvage the situation." Ilia murmured to herself in annoyance. "I can do this. It wasn't like I haven't done something like that already, after all."

Since she couldn't exactly depend on her teammates to support her, she quickly bought a cheep movement item and some potions before heading into the forest.

As a player responsible for the forest area, she had a lot of freedom in deciding just who exactly she wanted to fight. While technically she was supposed to counter the opponent forest player, that wasn't something she was really required to do if they wanted to win the game.

In reality, her most important job right now was ensuring that her teammates would be able to contend their lanes well.

A message informing them of the first death of the game appeared on the chat log.

Her teammate died to a tower.

Ilia winced.

It looked like her job was going to be harder than she thought.

One of the lanes was essentially lost right now.

The only thing she could do was focus on the other lane; they would be able to do something about the first one later in the game, maybe.

She sent a ping for the other lane to inform them that she would be helping them. It wasn't something she would have done while playing with her friends, but it became a necessity for a team like the one she currently played on.

Hopefully her teammates would understand what she was trying to tell them.

"Got it!" One of her teammates shouted while completely ignoring the fact that the enemy team was in the very same room and could hear them very well. "You can take them from behind, if you want. We will keep them in place."

It took all of Ilia's strength to not bash her head against the desk in anger.

Why did her teammates think it was a good idea to talk aloud about their plans in the middle of the game?

There was a reason she used a ping to inform them of that!

She huffed.

Okay, there was nothing she could do about it. The plan would remain the same, and she would still help out that lane as much as she could; she would simply have to be far more careful while doing it.

Her character moved towards the lane she promised to help before it could reach that lane; however, a sneak attack stopped it.

Ilia scowled.

The enemy forest player decided they were going to face her.

With a quick and decided movement of her hand, she used the potion to heal herself back to full health. It would have been a bit of a waste if she were to ignore the enemy and go for the lane; however, her enemy didn't seem to have any desire to leave her alone.

As far as she was aware, that guy wanted to fight her no matter what.

She took a deep breath as she focused on the game.

If her opponent wanted a fight, then she would give them one.

It wasn't the best thing she could have done in this situation, and if she had a decent team, she probably would have pushed forward for the lane instead. Unless she was quick enough, fighting against that enemy would most likely result in the death of her teammates.

She didn't care.

Without giving her foe a moment to think of an attack plan, she quickly unlocked the stun ability of her character and launched it.

It wasn't the fastest attack, and any competent player could easily dodge it by keeping distance and moving from side to side.

Her enemy did exactly that.

Ilia smirked.

That was exactly what she was aiming for.

With her enemy away from her and playing safely against her, she could easily pummell them with her basic attacks as they could do nothing against it.

There was only one advantage her character had over the character of her opponent, and it was range. It wasn't a lot, and as the game progressed that advantage would mean less and less, but it was just enough for her to win this fight.

Sure, the enemy character did have gap-closing abilities and technically had higher movement speed than her. However, it hardly mattered since that ability wasn't unlocked yet, and her stun ability would be ready to use again by the time they could reach her through movement speed alone.

Right now, there was nothing her foe could do to defeat her.

Two more deaths appeared on the chat log.

Her teammates died on the lane she was supposed to help on.

She was too slow.

A moment later she was suddenly surrounded by three more players as the rest of the opposing team decided to help their forest player and gang up on her. They came at her with their abilities charged and their health almost full.

There were a lot of things she could manage in this game, but winning a four-on-one fight so early on wasn't among them.

It didn't take her opponents long to defeat her and kill her character.

Ilia scoffed.

Her entire team was dead, and their opponents could push forward unopposed. It was a terrible state of the game, and something that really shouldn't have happened in the first place, especially not so early into the game.

She gritted her teeth.

That was bad, but it wasn't an impossible situation just yet. There were still some things she could do to make the situation better and maybe save the entire game if she was lucky enough.

It wasn't going to be easy, but she knew she could do it!

She simply needed to give her best.

Unfortunately, as the game progressed further, the situation became worse and worse for her. No matter what plans she had or how well she played, it all didn't matter because her teammates kept dying before she could help them in any way.

In the end, the difference in skill between both teams was astronomical.

There was nothing she could do to bridge that gap on her own.

It didn't take too long for the enemy team to get past all the towers on both of their lanes and invade their base with their more powerful characters. That was a completely one-sided game from the start, and it didn't change at the end, either.

Ilia could only laugh wryly as she watched the scene on her computer.

Her team was defeated.

She lost.

And cut!

I had lost a little bit over five hundred words in this chapter because I made a mistake while copy pasting it for the website. The thing I cut wasn't that important but it made me correct a couple of things to make the fragments fit with each other.

I wonder the place I the place the chapter was cut in is actually as easy to see as I think it is. Hint: the cut part was originally in the last part of the chapter.

Anyway, that's it for now, see ya!
