Asriel, Frisk, Chara, and Monster Kid sprinted across the sidewalk as they made their way to the city park. "Yo! Wait up guys!" Monster Kid shouted a few ways behind the other three. In response, the others ran faster and in turn, so did Monster Kid as the armless raptor-like monster was determined to keep up. They all laughed at their exhausting efforts and were starting to slow down when Monster Kid tripped and faceplanted into the pavement with a resounding "thud."
"You alright MK?" Asriel said between pants as the others ran back to check on him.
"I'm ok, dudes! Happens all the time! Now c'mon, let's go! Sans said he would train with us today!" MK shouted with excitement.
"If he shows up," Chara began, "You know how that lazybones is."
"He'll be there," Frisk gasped, out of breath. It's been a year since Chara came to live with Frisk, Asriel, and their parents. Chara could recall it as if it was yesterday:
"Hello, my children! You're just in time for di-" Toriel began to say until she looked up, her hand frozen on the door handle.
"Hi, Mom," Chara said warmly. Toriel was speechless. It couldn't be. She reached out to make sure she wasn't seeing things and held his cheek in her hand. Chara cherished the feeling of her soft, white fur on his smooth skin. Toriel looked into his son's naturally ruby red eyes and began to feel tears on her cheeks as Chara placed his hand on her own. They both leapt forward and hugged each other tightly, tears streaming down both of their faces.
"Oh, my child! You have no idea how much I've missed you! It's not possible and yet here you are!"
"I didn't think it was possible either, but I owe it all to them," Chara said, looking towards Frisk and Asriel with a smile. Toriel looked at the two children with her deep brown eyes. "You two are truly remarkable," she said warmly. Frisk felt their face go red and Asriel was blushing behind his fur as they both smiled fondly. "Well, I believe there is only one way to celebrate," Toriel declared as she let go of Chara. "What?" Asriel queried with general confusion. "Pie, of course!" Toriel said excitedly and the three of them cheered and went inside. As the goat mom cut them slices, Chara was content and so were the rest of them. And so, they ate their pie.
But now was the time to focus on the matter at hand: getting to the park. Frisk had convinced Sans to train them with his magic and since everyone knew how lazy he was, this was a rare opportunity. The stinky, stuffy air of the city seemed to dissipate while they ran towards the park in the center of it all. The four of them stopped under a large tree to rest and sat themselves against the bumpy trunk in the cool patches of shade dotted with slivers of sunlight poking out from behind the leaves. Once the quartet had caught their breath, they continued on towards the center of the park that was surprisingly empty, especially on a Saturday. "Yo, guys? Is this the spot?" Monster Kid said with a puzzled look on his face.
"Yep, this is it," Chara said plainly.
"Then where is he?"
"He'll be here, in three, two..." Frisk said before Sans teleported behind Asriel with a loud "Zop!"
"Heya."
Asriel shrieked and fell over while Chara and Monster Kid shifted into weird positions when they were startled, all the while, Frisk seemed to be the only one unaffected and with a straight face. "How did you know when he was gonna get here?!" Chara asked, dumbfounded. "I have my ways," Frisk said nonchalantly as her and Sans shared a fist bump.
"Sorry I'm late, kids. I had a ton of work to do..."
"Don't," Chara said sharply.
"A skele-ton." Frisk could barely suppress her laughter while Chara groaned and promptly face-palmed but chuckled a little at the old joke. "Anyway, you kids want me to train ya, huh?" Sans said, eyes closed. "Yeah dude! We've never seen you fight before, show us!" Monster Kid said excitedly. "Well then, Frisk, you wanna lead the demonstration?" said Sans. Frisk nodded and the skeleton winked at her as they walked to where they were square with one another. "Now, since Frisk here has some experience with dodging, ya think you can handle the hard stuff?" he said, both eyes open. "Come on, Sans. You know I can," Frisk said, slightly annoyed. "Heh heh. Well, you asked for it," Sans said, his hands in a shrugging position.
"Ready?" he said, and with that, Frisk's soul turned blue as a heavy sensation washed over her. She knew this feeling. Whenever Sans used what he called "blue magic," he could move someone's soul how he pleased but also made the soul susceptible to gravity in a way. He swiftly moved his hand towards the sky, lifting the human off the ground and then directing his hand to the ground with equal speed, making Frisk feel as if she was being shoved as she swiftly jumped high enough to avoid contact with the bones that sprouted from the ground when she bounced off the warm grass due to the force. Sans then summoned a set of bones in a sort of shape that seemed to curve up and down which Frisk went through with ease. Skull-like creatures seemed to come out of nowhere as Frisk avoided the laser beams of the skeleton's Gaster Blasters in varying sizes. The other three children stared in awe at the human's skill and physique.
"Heh. Well, now it's time for what you came for."
Frisk jumped on the platform that was summoned for the purpose of this attack and jumped to and from each one, dodging the bones above or below them with ease, it seemed as if they were exerting no energy at all with how well they moved around the attacks. The next attacks came and went and there was not a scratch on the child. "Impressive. This ain't nothin' for you huh bud?" Sans said with admiration in his tone. "Tell ya what: survive this and I'll get you kids something after this," the short skeletal figure said with a wink. "Easy," Frisk said with a smug smirk on their lips. Sans gave a chuckle at that. "Careful, I don't wanna make you eat your words," he said, grinning as always.
The skeleton monster than raised his hand again and proceeded to toss Frisk around at a fast pace, making them run into trees, the grass, and all of them were lined with bones the minute she bounced off them but was able to maneuver around them. The blue magic had been lifted from her as she found herself weaving through bones on either side of her, practically moving in a circular motion. The human's soul turned blue again as they were thrown sideways and pretty much catapulted across the park as they shimmied through bones and squeezed through the tight gap that was left by them as they were propelled parallel to the ground. They slammed into a tree and once again, bones sprouted from it as soon as she bounced off it, sap oozing out the sturdy wood from the impalement. Frisk jumped out of the way of numerous bony projectiles that sprouted from the earth as she was teleported to different spots, she then ran in circles with a straight face as line after line of Gaster Blasters blasted at the grass, singeing anything in the blast radius. Frisk was then thrown from the sky to the ground multiple times, bruising her up a little bit before it started to slow down, she stood up as her soul was released from Sans' magic, breathing hard.
Asriel, Chara, and Monster Kid gaped at her with their eyes wide and jaws touching the floor. "Yo! That was amazing!" Monster Kid said, loud and excited. "That was more than amazing! It's like you've done this before or something!" Asriel said with admiration. Frisk froze. Their smile disappeared in a flash as panic tainted their eyes. As she looked toward Sans, her memory stared back at her. The one where he didn't do this for fun and games. The Sans that fought her in that judgement hall. The Frisk that killed his brother and everyone he cared about. The distinct colors of red and gold haunted them for this very reason. Her vision shifted from her memories to reality in instances and her breathing quickened, though it felt as if her lungs were empty. Her chest tightened and she clutched it in response, a cold and numb feeling washed over her and the weight of it was bone-crushing. Chara was the first to notice.
"Hey, Frisk? You alright?" he said, his brow furrowed. Frisk snapped out of it in an instant and plastered a fake-ass smile on their face. "Yep! Just fine!" they said, sounding a little too convincing. The other three of them turned with concerned looks on their faces at the tone of her voice.
"You sure? We can talk about it if something's-"
"I said I'm fine," Frisk interrupted Asriel through slightly gritted teeth. "If you say so," Sans said, shrugging, "But anyway, good job kid, that's the best I've seen anyone do. So, howzabout we go-"
"Hey, freak!"
The quintet turned to face the sound and were met with the face of a brown-haired boy.
"Ugh, here we go," Asriel said flatly. The human walked up, hands in his pockets, with a couple other boys behind him.
"What are you doing here Carl?" Chara said with a look filled with pure loathing.
"I could ask you the same thing. Monsters. Destructive as always," Carl said, looking at the torn-up ground.
"Heh, sorry 'bout that. Me and the kids here were just havin' a little training sesh," Sans said casually.
"Ugh, what you can expect from an ugly monster," Carl said coldly. "And a human freak," he said, pointing to Frisk.
"Leave Frisk alone!" Asriel shouted.
"No one asked for your opinion, creep! I don't know why we have to deal with your kind, anyway. It would've been easier if you all just stayed underground!" Carl said, his voice raised. Sans' pupils had disappeared, and Frisk could tell he wanted to give this kid a bad time, but he was better than that. Chara was visibly livid, and his ruby red eyes seemed to grow brighter in his anger.
"And you know what else? It would be better for all of us if you just turned to dust right here, right now!" Carl said loudly, hatred tainting his voice.
"That's enough..." Frisk stated coldly. The rest of them turned to see the short human, her hair casting a shadow over her eyes. She walked up to him and grabbed his shirt. "You know, I've seen a lot of people like you, comes with the perks of being an ambassador. It happens, but I don't have to like it," she continued. "And it's close-minded people like you that make it so much harder than it has to be. People like you that test my faith in humanity. Now, you must know that after going through an entire mountain of monsters, I've gained some skills. We can do this the easy way or the hard way. You can walk away, or things are gonna get ugly," Frisk said threateningly. Carl stood there. He knew he should probably walk away, but his anger and ego got the best of him.
"Ugh! Get away from me freak!" he yelled and swung at her. Frisk dodged the attack with no effort at all, despite this, he persisted. He punched, kicked, and hit at Frisk, attempting to land a blow. The short human dodged easily and rhythmically, so much so that it almost looked like some form of dance, and that's what she did. She started dancing around his attacks, doing back flips, walkovers, and much more. Carl kept swinging at her despite his lack of stamina and kicked at her, and while his foot was still in the air, Frisk tapped him and he faceplanted on the dry grass.
Frisk stood there with a blank expression, but her face changed to a smug grin.
"Ha! She beat you in a fight AND in a dance!" Chara yelled triumphantly. Carl's face flushed. By this point, his friends had all walked off. He gave them a scowl and left, humiliated. Everyone's expressions were sort of blank. Asriel began giggling and soon, everyone else followed. It escalated until they were all howling with laughter.
"Heh heh, jeez kid, that caught me off guard," Sans said between chuckles.
"Yo! That was awesome!" Monster Kid commented.
"Haha! I honestly wasn't expecting do that either! Guess all those lessons with Mettaton paid off," Frisk said, out of breath. "Hey, didn't you say you were gonna get us something after training?" she remembered.
"Oh yeah, heh, how's ice cream sound?" the skeleton said. They all agreed and left to go get it. Among the group, Frisk lagged behind while they walked. She couldn't stop thinking about what had happened then, but there was something else. An inner voice whispered in the back of her mind something she didn't want to come to terms with. Something she wished wasn't true. The fact that if Chara hadn't come into her life, she wouldn't have all these awful memories.
...
Frisk was walking home. She had come out of the library with books in her arms. She was humming contentedly to herself when someone grabbed her shoulder. She froze and slowly turned around. It was Carl. The same boy who tried to fight her the day before.
"Listen up freak," he began, "I don't appreciate you humiliating me in front of my friends. Now, if you don't want me to hurt some specific people, I suggest you cooperate," he muttered menacingly. Frisk's eyes went wide as she knew exactly who he was referring to.
"Fine, fine! Just don't hurt them, p-please..." she said with fear tainting her voice. The last thing she wanted was for her family to be hurt because of her, after all, she's already done that before.
"Good."
...
"Don't forget your lunches, children!" Toriel called from the front door, holding some paper sacks.
The threesome ran back to grab them from her, and they all smiled as they yelled goodbye for the second time. Another Monday. They ran for about a quarter of the way to their school before they had to slow down and catch their breath. It was cloudy today, and they were getting darker, like a grey-colored cloak being laid across the sky. Toriel advised the children to bring umbrellas, but they didn't listen, and Frisk liked rain anyway, so she didn't mind. They reached the reddish brick building and met with their friends while they waited for the doors to open.
"Yo, guys! Over here!" Monster Kid shouted from amongst the crowd of kids. The three headed over to where he and two other children were sitting.
"Hey guys, what happened with you over the weekend? Monster Kid said you did something," said Malachi, a kid with black, curly hair.
"Well, whatever you did sounded pretty exciting," Noelle said shyly, she was a reindeer-like monster with long, blonde hair that curled a bit at the ends.
"It was exciting alright," Chara remarked and they told the story. The things Carl had said, the things he did, and how Frisk beat his ass at dancing, and in the end, they were all laughing hard. They all went inside when the bell rang, signaling the start of the school day, and got to their classes. At lunch, they decided to go outside. They were all chatting with each other when Frisk stole a glance at Carl and noticed that he was looking at her.
"H-Hey, I'll catch you guys later," she said hesitantly and walked towards him, holding her arms in front of her chest. The other four didn't see who she was going to, but they could tell something was off. Especially her brothers, and Chara couldn't help getting a bad feeling.
A/N:
