When Catherine looks at Steven, she's always thinking about the same person. To tell the truth, she's thinking about him all the time. But she regrets a lot: her mistakes and her silences.
Because yeah, Steven is her son. He's three years old and going to ask who's his father.
A thousand miles of this place, the father is here. He knows he's gonna finish his life alone because of his choices. All his ohana is here to support him but it's not enough to not think about his lost love.
So, when Steven asks who's his father's, Catherine does what she promised and go to Hawaii. And inevitably, all that makes some sparks!

When Catherine woke up, she saw two blue ocean eyes were looking at her. She straightened up slowly and smiled to the person in front of her.
-"Good morning, Steven" she said.
-"Hi, mom" replied the young boy with a smile and that's remembered to her some else's smile.
Steve has been conceived when she was in the Montana with Steve, after Joe's death. Normally, it should be just a "wildness moment" but Catherine got pregnant. When she learnt it, she went to Hawaii to tell it to Steve, even if she was scared about the reaction he could have, because it wasn't planned at all.
However, she put her fear away and she took a plane to go to her final destination, but when she arrived at Steve's home, he wasn't alone. He was with a girl, and he seemed to be happy. It was Brooke who was here, she learnt it later.
At this moment, her face bathed in tears and her hands on her belly, Cath decided it will be her baby and her, just them.
She could leave the CIA after very long negotiations and she settled in a little house in Coronaro, California. With all her savings and the job of teacher she has, she could more than enough take care of Steven without any problems.
Her son had now four years and said regularly the word "dad". At every time he did this, Catherine felt her missing a rate, because she had to tell him her daddy wasn't here. There was a great resemblance between her son and Steve, so she was always thinking about the man she will love all her life.
She had always promised to herself that the day Steven will clearly ask to see his father, she will do it. Despite all the consequences it can have on her.
But she believed it will arrive later than what happened.
McGarrett's home, 3:00 PM, Honolulu, O'ahu, Hawaii
Steve was with his sister and his niece, who decided to settle in Hawaii to be together, in family.
At this moment, they were move up all the furniture to put it in new Mary and Joan's house.
-"Do you want some kids, Steve?" asked Mary suddenly.
-"Why?" he said, continuing to work.
-"Answer to the question" she said while he stopped the work he was doing and he sat down on her sides.
-"I think that yes, I would like. But with my actual love situation these last times…"
In fact, Steve was doing any efforts, refusing the dates the others planned for him, and not doing anything after work where he could meet someone… Because he knew he will never find someone like Catherine. He wouldn't try to, because even if he had to be in fear against Cath to let him down, he couldn't do it. He couldn't forget her too. Because he loves her.
When they were in China, Steve wanted to ask her to stay with him, but he hadn't, scared of a negative answer. But he didn't know it would be better if he did…
-"You can adopt, if you want" Mary declared.
-"Have you seen my job, Mary? I'm the leader of a police task force. So, in first line. My situation can't let adopt a child" Steve replied.
-"Did you want to do that with someone, one day?" she asked him.
-"You're asking a question which you already have the answer, he said and Mary smiled. I think that… that it could works out with Cath when we were together… But we are not anymore."
-"Did you have some news about her, recently?" she interrupted him.
-"We have some messages, sometimes. I think I talk with her six months ago for the last time" he replied.
-"If you want to be with her, listen your heart, easily. It knows what's the best for you and to do" Mary advised his brother.
-"That's nice to try to help me, he thanked her. But honestly, I don't know how to do."
Mary opened her arms for a hug, and they shared it. It seemed to be like many years ago now, when they were some little kids.
-"What are you doing?" asked Joan, arriving in the room, with her little voice.
-"A hug, darling. Come here" said her mother an the young girl ran to her mother and her uncle to enter in the big hug.
That was just like that. The family and the love is the thing the most important ever. We have to take care of it, otherwise we could regret it.
Steve promised to himself to try to talk with Catherine as soon as possible. Because he wouldn't lose something they still have together: to be friend and confident the one with the other.

Of course, this is a McRoll story which take place after the season 10 but we have to forget episode finale.

I know it because the story finished on paper in French, but I must translate it!
