Chapter Four: Suspicious Minds.

Entering the kitchen, Leona smiled seeing her family at the table having breakfast with her father in the kitchen cooking while her mother seemed to be going through some crumbled paper that was no doubt something from school for her brother.

"Morning mama, morning dad," Leona greeted kissing her parents on the cheek before grabbing a plate and moving to help herself to the breakfast that was set out on the table. Her grandmother was seated, clutching her morning coffee her face and hair done up perfectly and Leona doubted that she had ever seen Lydia Reira without any makeup on.

"The Cullens haven't been in school since Bella Swan's birthday," Elena continued on with what she had been telling their grandmother, the middle Hart daughter had recently started High School and had quite a bit to say about the newest family in town. The Cullens were a hot topic, no matter who it was everyone seemed to have an opinion on the family that certainly didn't fit in.

"That's not news. Dr Cullen and his wife take them camping all the time," Lydia replied sipping on her coffee, every time it was sunny the Cullens disappeared off into the mountains with their children to enjoy the weather. They had been doing so since they had arrived in Forks back in 2003, keeping to themselves for the most part until the youngest son had started courting the Chief's daughter.

"And she's got this bandage on her arm, she says she tripped," Elena whispered leaning forward, they had all heard about the injuries that Isabella Swan had suffered back in March. Leona paused at that, she hadn't heard anything about the birthday only that Charlie had barely seen his daughter and she had spent most of the day around the Cullens house, a place no one else seemed to visit.

"So clumsy that girl, she would benefit from some of my dance classes," Lydia dismissed, certain that with her guidance that she would ensure the Swan girl would be more graceful rather than always tripping. Leona couldn't help but smile at her grandmother's words, Lydia had always insisted that dance lessons could cure anyone's problems.

"From what I hear, that would likely do more harm than good," John noted to his mother-in-law, moving to plate up her eggs for her; he had no doubt that Lydia meant well but the girl had apparently inherited her father's clumsy nature. Lydia waved him off but uttered her thanks as he set the plate in front of her, she set down her coffee before tucking in to her breakfast; sure that a couple of lessons could not hurt.

"But isn't it weird? Like first the injuries that she got back in March and now this," Elena stated, she turned to look at Leona knowing that surely her older sister would be interested in this. Leona shrugged her shoulders, she wasn't going to speculate about what was going on and she was sure that when she went to work that she would likely hear more about it. Especially with everything that she had heard at work, she would not breathe a word about it to anyone at home; the situation was being carefully watched and she didn't want to set off any alarm bells with the Cullens if the suspicions were correct.

"It could be nothing, they go camping all the time and everyone knows how clumsy Isabella is," Leona replied simply, she ignoring the look of annoyance from her sister knowing that it was better not to indulge her in this. Elena was fifteen and the last thing that Leona wanted was her getting involved in whatever was going on with Chief Swan's daughter; she knew her sister well enough that she would say something to the wrong person.

"Okay, two of you have school to be getting to," Penelope stated knowing that this conversation was inappropriate for the breakfast table especially for her teenagers. Most of the adults in town knew about the situation and she believed that it would be handled by experts when the time came to do so. Elena and Alex grumbled while Leona focused on her breakfast, she ignored the look that her parents shared knowing that look better than anything; their concerns were ones felt by anyone who knew of the situation. John offered a reassuring smile to his wife, he knew that if Bella was his daughter then he would not stand for what was happening; damned the consequences, he would fight to protect his kids.

"Put it there," Lydia instructed Leona, signalling to the space that she wanted Leona to place the chair that she had wanted moving; she was thrilled that Leona had offered to help her move around her bedroom. The room had been slowly decorated and updated to Lydia's tastes since she had moved in shortly after the death of Leona's grandfather; Alberto had suffered a heart attack in 2004 and the decision had been made to move Lydia into the family home. The home that Lydia and Alberto had shared, the childhood home of Penelope had been too much for Lydia to upkeep on her own after his passing.

"Is this okay Abuelita?" Leona asked setting down the chair, she stepped back so that her grandmother could see properly; the rain pattering against the windows as they walked on the room. Lydia clapped her hands pleased with the move and moved to hug Leona, grateful that her eldest granddaughter was able to help her with this; she knew that Penelope and John had sacrificed a lot to have her move in with them. The last thing that Lydia wished to be was a burden on them, they had welcomed her into their home without a fuss insisting that she stay with them after her beloved had passed.

"That is perfect, gracias," Lydia stated with a smile, she moved to tidy around her room knowing that she would not have anyone come into her room and tidy after her. Leona watched her grandmother for a moment before a picture caught her eye, she moved across the room while Lydia continued to perfect her room and picked up the picture that sat on the bedside table with a smile.

It had been eighteen months since her grandfather had passed away and it still felt strange to know that he wasn't around, he had been a big part of their lives. Lydia and Alberto had stepped up, they had been the grandparents that had helped raise the kids and made sure that John and Penelope started off their lives right; providing and aiding them when things got tough. Leona didn't think she had spent much time with her paternal grandparents, she didn't know much about her grandfather on that side but her grandmother was strong-willed but self-centred; she was renowned for getting involved in pyramid schemes.

"I hope I have the same kind of marriage as you and Abuelo," Leona noted with a small smile, she wanted what her grandparents had, what her parents had built together; she knew that it had not been easy but they had fought for what they had. Lydia smiled softly approaching Leona and peering at the picture of her and Alberto on their wedding day, two scared children that had come together when fleeing from Cuba all those years ago.

"I am sure you will," Lydia encouraged with a smile, that was all that she and Alberto had wanted for their children and grandchildren; they wanted them to have a better life, free to love and be with whoever they wanted. The two women stood together for a moment admiring the wedding picture before the door bell rang and someone banged on the door. Leona sighed handing the picture over to Lydia before she made her way out of the bedroom and down the hallway to the door; she furrowed her brow spotting a familiar face on the other side.

"Jackson?" Leona asked staring at her friend, allowing him to step into the entrance of the home rather than standing outside in the rain that had started to really come down in the past twenty minutes or so. Jackson was thankful to get out of the rain, he had come to Leona's place as quickly as he could when she hadn't responded to his messages.

"Did you not get my text?" Jackson asked knowing that they had to act quickly, he was dressed for hiking and he knew that Leona would need to get changed. Leona looked at him confused, her phone was on charge in the kitchen and she hadn't heard it go off while she was helping her grandmother in the next room. Lydia poked her head out of her bedroom to see what was going on, a frown on her face sensing that something had happened if Jackson had come straight to their house in a rush.

"The Chief's daughter is missing, everyone's been called in for the search," Jackson informed the pair, knowing that they didn't have much time; the Chief had made it clear that finding his daughter was the priority especially before nightfall. Leona stared at Jackson, not wanting to even imagine what had occurred to make Chief Swan call them all in to search for his daughter in such a manner.
