Chapter Five: Search and Rescue.

Arriving at Chief Swan's house, Leona looked at Jackson before climbing out of the car and taking in the gathering before them; the front yard of the Swan's house was filled with people who had come to help. As soon as word had gotten out about what had happened, the entire community had come together to help with the search; there was a refreshment stand being set up and maps placed on the front of cars as people carved out search areas.

Charlie Swan was a well loved member of the community, there was no one in Forks that had a bad word to say about the Chief of Police with many growing up with him. While the same could not be truly said for Isabella Swan, the daughter of the Chief of Police with his flaky ex-wife who had hightailed it out of Forks at the first opportunity that presented itself.

The girl had been raised away from Forks, her only tie to the town that her father had grown up in was him; despite the few visits that she had made when she was a child. Leona made her way across the grass where Charlie had a phone pressed to his ear, a frown deep set on his face from where he was stood with several men that Leona didn't entirely recognise. The sun was already getting low in the sky, light was not on their side and the woods that backed onto the house went on for miles; if they wanted any hope in finding Isabella then they had to act fast.

"What do we know?" Jackson asked approaching Joanna who was stood by the car, a concerned look on her face as she watched Charlie trying and failing yet again to get a hold of anyone from the Cullens place. He had been trying since he had got home, knowing that his daughter spent most of her days there except for the last few days; she had been rather quiet and withdrawn since her birthday.

"She came home from school and left Charlie a note saying she was going to go for a hike in the woods alone," Joanna said, he had seen the note for herself, knew that it was supposed to be in Isabella's handwriting but the girl certainly knew better than to go hiking on her own in the woods. There had been reports of bears in the area, hikers and campers far more experiences than Isabella were avoiding the area because of the dangers.

"The girl trips on flat ground and she's gone hiking alone?" Leona said raising an eyebrow, she didn't believe for a second that Isabella Swan would willingly go walking through the woods on her own. From what Leona had heard about Isabella, she was more than of a bookworm who actively avoided sports considering how accident prone she was. Joanna nodded her head, Leona wasn't the only one that thought that all this was odd; but all that mattered right now was finding Isabella before anything happened to her.

"Okay. I need you guys patrolling the woods around the house, just in case she wanders back to the house or is nearby calling for help," Joanna instructed the pair, she reached behind her and pulled two radios so that they could keep in contact with the base camp. Leona and Jackson nodded their heads before taking the radios and heading into the woods that surrounded the Swan House; Joanna watching them leave before she turned back to look at Charlie, who was getting off the phone with one of Isabella's friends.

"I'm gonna try the Cullens place again," Charlie said, it had been the first place that he had called but no one had picked up his calls, not even Alice. Surely one of them knew where Isabella had gotten to, she spent all her time there and barely saw any of her other friends unless the Cullens were out camping.

"The Cullens left town Charlie," Billy Black informed his best friend, a frown upon his face a little concerned that Charlie hadn't seemed to have known that they were leaving town. It painted a bad picture as far as he was concerned especially with Isabella now disappearing off into the woods.

"Where'd they go?" Charlie asked lowering the phone, surely his daughter wouldn't have run off again after another fight with that Edwin kid; he had never liked him after what had happened in March.

"We're gonna find her Charlie," Billy promised, he had called in some extra help from La Push and the boys knew to be careful as they made their way through the woods especially with others searching for Isabella Swan.

"So I spoke with my Dad today," Jackson said making conversation as he and Leona made their way through the woods, sticking close enough to the house so that they could find their way back without much difficulty. The light was quickly fading, leaving the woods dark and their torches did little to light their paths as they walked through the woods trying to find any sight of Bella that they might be able to find.

"He's still set on me going into Internal Affairs, that it would be the best move for my career and how much change I could bring about," Jackson murmured with a shake of his head, he knew that his father expected him to follow in his footsteps but that wasn't what Jackson wanted. His decision to join the police had already caused tension in his family, his mother and younger brother had been far from pleased with the idea and Jackson hadn't spoken to them in months. Luna and Marshall hadn't even attended his graduation from the police academy, it had been a little disappointing to look out across the crowd and see only his sister in the audience while his father had been upon the stage with him.

"He still treats me like I am just an extension of him," Jackson murmured with a shake of his head, most of his family are cops such as his uncles, two aunts, and several of his cousins who all had opinions on his career. Being a police officer was all that Jackson had ever wanted to do, from when he was a young kid he had always talked about becoming an officer like his father; he just hadn't realised that everyone would have opinions on that.

"He will come around, you've only just started your rookie year and there is so much that can happen in that time," Leona encouraged with a smile, she could only imagine the pressure that Jackson was under to live up to the family legacy. His father only expected the best from him, the big shoes that he had to fill now that he was out of the academy; it was why Jackson's placement here had been such a disappointment.

Percy didn't think that the Forks Police Department was the right fit for his son, he had made that more than clear when Jackson announced where his placement was. Jackson opened his mouth to reply when the sound rustling interrupted him, both him and Leona stopped in their tracks and shone their torches in the direction of the sound. Sharing a look, Leona and Jackson edged their way towards the noise shining their lights across what they could see of the thick undergrowth and moving carefully.

"Hello?" Leona called out, her eyes squinting into the darkness that made her uncomfortable even growing up around the forest had always left her feeling like there was someone watching from the woods and she would never know. It was strange to think that you could be stood feet from someone out here and not know until it was too late; that wasn't even considering the wildlife that lived out here.

"This is the police is someone there?" Jackson shouted, his torch sweeping the trees ahead of them before it caught on a figure walking through the forest towards them. Leona and Jackson shared a confused look before focusing on the man that seemed to be carrying something or someone in their arms; they were moving at a steady pace towards the two of them.

"That's Isabella Swan," Leona said as the man came closer, her eyes finally making out just who he was carrying; she figured he must have been part of the extended search party. Jackson quickly scrambled to get his radio to tell everyone that Isabella had been found, he spoke quickly and no doubt they would have to wait long before other people arrived.

Leona opened her mouth to say something when her eyes met with the man's, the entire world felt like it had come to a halt, shifting on it's axis; goosebumps appearing just from the meeting of their eyes. Time stopped, the world was filled with peace just for that one second that seemed to stretch on for a lifetime; it felt like for that one moment that everything had finally fallen into place.

"Bells," called Charlie rushing in followed by several other members of the search party, worry filling him at the sight of his daughter and he had so many questions about what had happened. Leona looked away from the man, focusing instead of the Chief as he moved to take his daughter in his own arms; staggering slightly as the man relinquished Isabella to her father and looked down at the broken form of his daughter.

Joanna watched helplessly as Charlie started to carry Isabella back towards the house, she couldn't imagine what could have happened to her that had left the teenager looking so despondent and broken. The group followed after Charlie, no one speaking as they made their way back to the house, Mark and Antonio had stepped forward to help Charlie carry Isabella back to the house.

Leona, Jackson and Joanna were behind them with the stranger coming in behind them, his face betraying nothing on what had just happened; it was quiet, people turning to watch them bring Isabella back to the house. Dr. Green was rushed forward to join Charlie and others as they headed into the house; Joanna joining them while Jackson and Leona broke away from the group.

Leona spotted her father, looking grim at the sight of Isabella Swan and she made her way over to him; he wrapped his eldest daughter in his arms when she was close enough. John couldn't imagine what had happened to her, he knew that he would not have been as calm as Charlie had been if something had happened to any of his kids; it was one reason he was so thankful to live in such a community. It was at times like these when they all came together and John knew that they would always have each other's backs; the community spirit was certainly strong in Forks.

"How is she?" John asked spotting Joanna, who had exited the house with Dr Green and he knew that Charlie would be busy caring for his daughter no matter what had happened. Everyone was preparing to head home now that Isabella had been found, the sun had long since set and it was getting late; John could only imagine Penelope waiting up with Lydia for news on what was going on.

"Exhausted, cold. Dr Green says that she needs rest," Joanna said with a shake of her head, she didn't understand why Isabella would wander into the woods like that alone. The girl was still dressed in her clothes from school with no hiking supplies or anything, she wasn't the type to just take off hiking and she had never expressed interest in any physical activity.

Then there was the fact that her boyfriend and his entire family had suddenly left town, the rumour being that Dr Cullen had received a job offer that he couldn't say no too had led them to suddenly leaving. Leona tuned out of the conversation that her father was having with Joanna, she couldn't help but find herself looking over to the man that had brought Isabella back to the house.

Her eyes kept drifting over to him even when she tried to ignore the strange pull that she felt, one that told her that she should speak with this stranger who seemed just as interested in her as she was with him. Or perhaps he had noticed her staring and thought that she was being weird.

"Sam," Billy Black called waving over, the stranger who quickly moved over to the Elders side where he and Harry Clearwater were waiting to speak with him; Sam was sure that they wanted to know what had happened when he had found Isabella Swan. Sam had found her deep in the woods, curled in a ball whispering the words 'he's gone' to herself over and over; she hadn't even been able to answer the questions that Sam had asked her about what had happened.

It had been Billy that had called to inform him that Isabella Swan was missing, Sam having left his house and started the search as word spread that the Cullens had left. There had been a fear that she had been taken by the Cullens, either killed or have been turned which would have meant that the pack would have had to deal with the coven.

During his senior year he became the first of his generation to phase into a wolf, ahead of Jared and Paul who currently made up his pack. Having no idea what had happened to him and struck by panic, Sam hid deep in the forest for two weeks and finally, he calmed down enough that he turned back into a human while he slept.

Sam snuck home and told no one about his experience, he wouldn't talk to his mother or to Leah, his then girlfriend, he believed that he'd gone insane and was having delusions. It had been Old Quil that had released what had happened, inviting Sam to a council meeting where he, Billy and Harry had told him the truth.

His relationship with his mother and Leah became more difficult because he couldn't give away any information about what had happened to him which had led him to end the relationship. Now it seemed like the ancestors were pointing him in another direction, one that he wasn't sure what to make of.
