Chapter 5
At the entrance of Horikawa High School, the police arrived with the siren and even the TV news van with the reporters. Ryō stepped out of the police car and checked on every student, mostly he worried about his niece. He looked around, but there were no signs of her and Mitsuki. "Sakuya, where are you?" He muttered while looking for her. He even heard Erika fumed. "Hmph! I can't believe Kiryū followed Tsukimori, just for the sake of finding that half-breed. What is so special about those freaks?" She grumbled in an irritated tone. Ryō frowned but said nothing because he knew her father was his boss. The police were questioning the students and school staff, only to learn that oni appeared, and according to Kyudo's couch, the oni was disguised as a female student. Ms. Emiya turned her head to catch a glimpse of three students. "Kokoromi-san! Tsukimori-san!" She called her culinary students, yet she noticed white hair from behind two female students. Ryō frantically turned around, his brown eyes widened, Mitsuki and Sakuya were terrified like they were crying, while the pure white-haired tall boy comforted them. He speeds up towards those three. "Sakuya!" He called his niece out. Sakuya turned her head to make her eyes meet his, Ryō felt his heartbreaking, her eyes were red from crying and terrified. Fenrir looked at the chief of police, then he lowered his hand away from Sakuya to give her a light push. "Go." He encouraged her. Sakuya didn't hesitate as she ran to her uncle's arm, yet started crying again as niece and uncle embraced each other. Ryō soothes her by rubbing her back. "It's okay, I am sure Mitsuki can-" "Mitsuki nor Fenrir didn't banish oni, it was the White Wolf!" She raised her voice. Ryō blinked, and pushed her away, but held her shoulder with the confusion in his face. "What?" He asked her. "White Wolf killed the Oni and mauled it apart, and… and he was staring at me and Mitsuki, mostly Mitsuki before he left us alone. I… I don't know why he spared us!" She exclaimed, yet she had to lie to him because of the threat Mitsuki had received, yet she couldn't tell him Mitsuki could only hear White Wolf. She had to keep her guilt aside and fear for her family's lives. Ryō widens his slightly aged eyes. "The White Wolf spared her and Mitsuki? Could it be…" He thought and looked over at Mitsuki, who was still shaken, he assumed that Yosuke mentioned Fenrir scared the bestiary away, can the White Wolf tell she is hanyō? His brown eyes met Fenrir, he was stunned to see his appearance. He looked tall for his age, but his best guess was it was his Romanian root. He looked at Fenrir trying to calm terrified Mitsuki down, but he wondered why Taiga was afraid of him. "Fenrir!" Yosuke's voice called out and pushed past the officers and students to walk toward his foster son. Ryō and three students looked at Temple Monk, however when he laid his eyes on the dreaded Mitsuki, he was shocked to see her face. Fenrir let go of her as he frowned. "I'm fine, but Mitsuki and Sakuya aren't. It looks like White Wolf mauled the oni right in front of them." He said to him, but Yosuke couldn't take his eyes off of Mitsuki, who looked both confused and scared. Yosuke approaches her to take a closer look at her. She backed away from him. "Ummm…" "You do look exactly like your mother." He commented, leaving her and Sakuya dumbfounded. "Excuse me?" Mitsuki asked in confusion. Yosuke smiled softly. "My apology Kokoromi-san, but you do have Suzume-san's, your mother, beauty when she was your age. It is a shame, she didn't have any chance to see you grow up after she left you. You two will look like sisters, instead of mother and daughter." He said solemnly, yet saddened. Mitsuki sorrowfully glanced down, the female oni said her mother was killed, but she couldn't tell Yosuke about her new information or without any evidence because of the lack of evidence. However, she learned her mother's name was Suzume. Fenrir looked at his foster father as he raised his eyebrow like he was hiding something from her.
Ryō and Sakuya looked at Yosuke, however he approached Yosuke. "Yosuke, you know what happened to her birth mother since White Wolf appeared in front of Sakuya and Mitsuki, maybe you should-" His words cut off when his brown eyes noticed Mitsuki's flinching, leaving him puzzled. "What the hell?" He thought. Meanwhile, the deep and demonic voice spoke in Mitsuki's mind. "Don't even fucking dare dig deeper or ask about your mother. You should forget it." She can hear White Wolf's deep voice ringing in her brain, leaving her to flinch. "How can I hear him, but more importantly… Why did my mother leave me to Kannushi-dono and she ended up getting murdered? Mother, you must have the reason." She thought in distress, Fenrir soothed her back. She didn't notice Ryō looking at her, Yosuke took a deep breath and listened as he frowned when he mentioned White Wolf. "I know, but… I wanted Taiga to tell her. I believe she is old enough to know, so I will try to continue to convince Taiga to tell her. If he still refuses, I will tell her." He replied to Ryō, yet he would tell her if Taiga refused. He noticed Mitsuki glanced at Fenrir, who gave her a generous smile to tell her she was alright and there was nothing to worry about. Yosuke only smiled that his foster son had found someone who accepted him.
Taiga ran to Hoshikawa High, after receiving a call from school about an oni attack. He arrived at the high school and frantically looked for Mitsuki, however, his eyes saw her with Ryō, Sakuya, Yosuke, and, to his horror, Fenrir. His blood ran cold, and Mitsuki and Fenrir exchanged glances, but he still felt dreaded about Fenrir only terrified him as he grew close to her. He opened his mouth, but his throat went dry like no words coming out. He swallowed his spit, then tried to speak again. "Mitsuki!" He called her out. Mitsuki, Fenrir, and Sakuya turned their heads toward Taiga. Fenrir looked at Mitsuki again, then lowered his head to her white wolf ears to whisper to her, while covering his mouth with his hand to block Taiga's vision. Taiga kept his eyes on her reaction, but Mitsuki looked curious and nodded her head a couple of times. Fenrir pulled away and gave her a generous smile. "I will see you later or maybe call you to make sure you are okay." He said to her, then she smiled kindly back at him while blushing. "Thank you so much." She thanked him, and then she walked towards Taiga. Fenrir watched her heading toward Taiga, then he turned his attention to Yosuke.
"Kannushi-dono, I-" Mitsuki's words are cut off by his trembling words. "What happened? Did the oni hurt you?" He frantically asked her. She was astonished by his questions, then she opened her mouth. "I'm alright. The female oni said about my mother being killed, but Sakuya-chan tried to distract her. The oni tried to attack us, but this White Wolf-" Taiga looked at her in horror. "Wait! THE WHITE WOLF!" He shouted as he placed his hands on his shoulders, while the crowds looked at Taiga and Mitsuki from his shouting. "Did that monster hurt you?!" He shouts in fear. Mitsuki's silver blue orbs were widened, he wasn't that terrified like this. "Monster huh, he thinks he is a brave head priest, but he is a fool and a liar to lie to himself and you. There will be consequences if you dare tell him you can hear me." The White Wolf warned her by his telepathic, yet threatening tone that scared her to her core. She noticed the White Wolf likes to taunt Taiga, but it didn't make any sense because he fought Yokais. Maybe he was scared of White Wolf once. However, she feared for anyone and her own life of the large beast, if she told Taiga. She shakenly shook her head. "N-No, he only stared at me and Sakuya-chan and studied me. I think he spared me because I don't pose a threat… or something." She replied until she went quiet. Taiga's mind began to shake in fear, so he glanced at Yosuke, who gave him a look to convince him to tell her the truth, but unfortunately, Taiga hesitated as he took Mitsuki's hand and pulled her away to the locker room. Yosuke and others looked at the fled Head Priest, while Mitsuki was startled. "Kannushi-dono!" She cried. "Tell me everything when we return home." He said as he felt his mind racing. She gave him an odd look and entered the locker room to change her outfit. "Why me Suzume, I am not fit to protect your daughter? Yosuke-dono is better fitting for her protection." He thought towards Suzume as his face looked like he was in defeat. A few minutes later himself battling his mind, Mitsuki opened the door fully in a sailor fuku outfit, before Taiga took her to the entrance to head home. She began to ask. "Can I say farewell to Sakuya-chan and Fenrir-san and see them on Monday?" She asked, but Taiga sharply turned around. "There is no time for that, White Wolf could be anywhere." He declined her offer and dragged her away from Horikawa High School. Mitsuki watched her friends exchange confused looks, she felt like it was rude to depart before saying to her friends, so she was saddened. Fenrir and Sakuya in return gave her a confusing expression, however, Sakuya grabbed her smartphone to text Mitsuki and Fenrir to discuss in group chat. However, Mitsuki and Taiga sensed the demonic presence, but Taiga hurried to return home with her.
On the rooftop of the family mart, Lin kept his watchful eyes on fleeing Taiga and Mitsuki, mostly Mitsuki. He was observing her and catching her silver-blue eyes, and her facial structure, his demonic blue eyes were widened. He quickly changed to an amused expression. "You do look like Lady Suzume, but with you around… my lord will not be pleased." He commented on watching Mitsuki being dragged away.
Later at night in the Yamakawa residence, Taiga was sitting on the chair with his hands folded, while Mitsuki was in her bedroom changing her outfit. Taiga had a deep thought about Yosuke's suggestion, even wanting to discuss the yōkai incident with his old friend, but bringing Mitsuki to Kiryū's residence. No way, in his thought, he was too scared of Fenrir's presence or how close he was to her. However, after she and Sakuya encounter White Wolf, he cannot leave her in his house alone as he feels she is not ready to know her birth parents. His thought was cut off by her footsteps coming to the living room. He lifted his head to see Mitsuki, dressed in a white long-sleeved blouse and above knee-length black frilly skirt. She walked towards the table to pull the chair to sit down, facing Taiga. He took a deep breath. "Are you sure White Wolf didn't attack you?" He asked her about the recent attack. Mitsuki shook her head and looked down at her lap. "No, he only observed me, then he left me and Sakuya-chan unharmed." She confirmed, while shaken by the encounter. She looked at her guardian since Yosuke mentioned her mother. "Why didn't you tell me what my mother looks like?" She asked him about her mother. Taiga hesitated and took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "Your mother… Suzume and I used to be close friends until we fell out because of our worldviews. She believes yokai and humans should co-exist peacefully and in harmony, while I don't believe in her ideal. I didn't tell you why you look like her because you remind me of her, but you have your father's roots. I have to admit, you are an uncanny split image of your mother. I never approve of your mother's marriage with your father. I even warned her that she was making a huge mistake, but she ignored my warning." He explains her mother's view, and why he never told her. Mitsuki slightly widened her pupilless silver blue eyes, and her mother made a big mistake. She slowly furrowed her eyebrow. "Was it because she married my father, who is the youkai? Are you saying my existence is a mistake?" She asked him, she never heard Taiga talk about her father, the only information about her father was he was a youkai. Taiga let out a frustrating sigh. "I don't understand what she sees within him. And no, having you brought to this world is a blessing. I raised you to be like a human." He replied, yet declined as he saw her as a blessing. Mitsuki was relieved with a soft smile. Taiga frowned. "Back to earlier, since you are fifteen years old… I believe oni appeared because most of the youkai will see you as a threat, most likely you have both youkai power and spiritual power. I do not know why White Wolf leaves you alone, but he may see you as a threat when you grow older. It may be best to have you home before dark until we deal with that beast. I can't allow you to explore the ghost sight location with Sakuya at night." He speculated since Mitsuki was fifteen years old, youkai would most likely see her as a threat, yet feared White Wolf saw her the same. Learning her new curfew and unable to do ghost hunting with Sakuya, Mitsuki was upset. "But-" "I mean it, it is for your safety." Taiga cut her off. This shut her up, but she had to agree, remember she could hear him talking to her. Taiga stood up from the chair, he was about to leave the living room, but he stopped and looked at her. "Oh, I have been receiving invitations to Yosuke-dono's temple on the weekend. He suggested that I bring you along for study with Fenrir, and… keep him company." He informed her about the invitation to Kiryū's Temple. Mitsuki lifted her head in surprise, she had never been to Kiryū Temple, but she would do her homework with Fenrir. She smiled brightly. "I would love to go there and see the temple, and do the homework with Fenrir-san. I hope he will show me the tour." She agreed to come with Taiga, yet see where Fenrir lived. Taiga is now starting to regret asking her.
At Kūga's residence, Sakuya was huddled in the corner of her room with her blanket wrapped around herself, given by her aunt Izumi and uncle Ryō, shaking when her mind was scrambled. Her memory of seeing White Wolf tearing the oni to witnessing her father committing homicide to suicide right before her eyes. She squeezed her eyes shut and gripped her blanket as she whimpered loudly. Meanwhile, in the living room, Ryō brought the case over with his director's permission. He looked over the file of Suzume Kokoromi's Death Certificate, and cause of death: Murdered. He even looked over the photo of the body autopsy, her body was clawed and body trauma from blunt. Noted there was blood over her miko cloth and the side of her head, but that didn't belong to her. He was surprised Suzume was the split image of Mitsuki, same face scripture, eye shape, hair color, and demure expression, except the only difference was her eyes and the tip of her hair was crimson. Ryō suspected she got it from her father. However, another note stated there was another remaining, only a ring that only the man could fit was on Suzume's palm. The police said it may be the male, but there was no identification because they couldn't find his body as they suspected it was the youkai. He frowned, it must've been the wedding rings. Then which wolf youkai did she marry? He grabbed his smartphone to dial the technician and placed his phone against his ear to hear it ringing. He can hear the click and a female voice. "Hello, Chief." "Rei, can you find Kokoromi Suzume's marriage certificate? I need to know who was wolf youkai she married." He asked Rei, while looking at two wedding ring photos. "Kokoromi Suzume, I will see if I can find the official marriage certificate." She replied as Ryō could hear her typing. It took a few minutes and frustration sounded from her voice. "Chief, I can't seem to find it. There may be a possibility it's private or didn't want anyone to discover it. Unless the possibility, it's classified. The only way to find the official marriage certificate is to look for kannushi, who holds the wedding ceremony." She informed him. Ryō sighed and rubbed his head like it was a dead end. He thought about it, Taiga might know, but… based on his reaction, he wasn't in the wedding ceremony. He lifted his head and stared at the photo of wedding rings. "Thank you Rei, please send me the list of kannushi from fifteen or sixteen years ago. I can narrow it down by calling them." He thanked her. "You're welcome, I will send you through the email when I find it, and I'm so sorry about your niece." She replied and gave him condolence for Sakuya's PTSD. Ryō glanced back to where the stairs were, he closed his eyes and refocused on the autopsy photo. "She had a hard time since she witnessed her father kill her mother and unalive himself right in front of her. My wife and I were thinking about taking her to her therapy, but it's up to her." "I understand, goodbye chef, and take care," Rei replied before she hung up. Ryō set his smartphone and autopsy down, he rubbed his face with his hands. Suddenly, the door was open he quickly stood up and turned around to face the foyer, only his brown eyes met a junior high school boy about the age of thirteen dressed in Higashi Joyo Junior High School, only a white button-up shirt and navy blue pants with a black loafer, he is holding black school duffle bag with basketball and his jersey. The short dark brown hair removes his loafer and is about to put on his slippers, but his brown eyes meet a surprised look in Ryō's eyes. "Hi Dad, I'm home." He greeted his father with a smile and put on his slippers, he was heading to the laundry room. Ryō sighed in relief. "Welcome home Takeru. How was practice?" He greeted him. Takeru smiled and headed to the kitchen to turn on the temperature for a hot bath. "I'm doing well, senpai let me and my friends practice the defense. I heard what happened at Horikawa High School, is Sakuya okay?" He replied, then dropped his smile when he asked about his cousin. Ryō sighed deeply and was about to open his mouth, but he heard footsteps as he and Takeru turned their attention, Sakuya was walking down the stairs, she looked stressed out and she was about to head to the kitchen, but her brown eyes, no longer light, but empty void, meets her cousin and her uncle. "Hey, Takeru." She greeted him like she was worn out and her body was shaken. Takeru was shocked, he remembered when he was four when Ryō brought six-year-old Sakuya in, with empty void eyes and shaking her entire body as she clung to her uncle's shirt. He and his older brother, Akito, didn't know what was going on after their father and mother sent them to their room for a private talk. Only they can hear Izumi gasp in horror and say "Tragedy" and "I'm so sorry dear". Takeru didn't know what was happening until a few days later Akito threw a tantrum to ask why Sakuya was living with them. They didn't have a choice until Ryō revealed he was suspended from his work after he lost his younger sister from his abusive brother-in-law committed murder-suicide right in front of Sakuya, Sakuya will permanently live with them after working on official adoption since he is the only blood-relatives Sakuya had and his parents can't take care her due to their age. This leaves the boys in shock, Takeru barely remembers his paternal aunt, but only hears that she was described as a beautiful woman with kind and optimistic characteristics. Takeru remembered the funeral aftermath of Sakuya's parents.
Izumi and Ryō were holding four-year-old Takeru and eleven-year-old Akito's hand, and Ryō was holding six-year-old Sakuya. Behind them were his grieving parents, they were all staring at the gravestone with "Kūga" on it since they didn't want her remains with her abusive husband's family grave, which his sister's parents-in-law approved his decision after they regretted not noticing their son's sign of abusive behavior, including saving their daughter-in-law and their granddaughter. However, Ryō didn't blame them because it wasn't their fault, so he allowed his brother-in-law's family to visit Sakuya. Ryō blankly stared at the gravestone. "Rina… Izumi and I promise you, we will look after and take care of your daughter." He said to his younger sister before Izumi sobbed, Akito tried so hard not to cry, but he broke down.
Takeru stares at Sakuya as she enters the kitchen and hears the fridge open. He heard his father sigh. "She's not mentally well, the White Wolf tore Oni apart right in front of her and Mitsuki. He somehow spared them." He replied to his young son, who in return was shocked. He heard it, the White Wolf, but why did the beast spare two girls? "I was thinking about contacting her therapist, but she hasn't shown the signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I will talk to her to see if she needs to make a schedule for a therapy session." Ryō added as the sound of the fridge was closed, Sakuya stepped out of the kitchen with a glass of orange juice and stared at her uncle and Takeru, instead of going upstairs, she headed to the living room to sit on the chair on the table. She stared blankly at the glass of orange juice. Takeru glanced at his father while holding his school bag. "I will talk to her." He suggested that he would talk to her. Ryō silently agreed by nodding.
Takeru approached his cousin by sitting on the chair opposite hers. Sakuya slowly lifted her head with a blank face to face her younger cousin. Takeru sighed with his eyes closed. "Sakuya, my dad is thinking about contacting your therapist. So, you can feel better since the White Wolf-" He carefully asks, but Sakuya quickly gets livid. "Do you I look a god damn better Takeru?! I almost think about how that bastard so-called dad beat my mom up, and verbally abuse me for no fucking reason! He even made me watch him murder my mom, and kill himself!" She yelled at Takeru as her mind went downhill. Takeru nearly got scared of his cousin's temper, however… "Sakuya! Watch your tone!" Ryō yelled at his niece to scold her. Sakuya whipped her head towards the right to look at her uncle, then quickly looked at her cousin as her tears broke down. "You and Akito-nii-san don't understand what I have been through." She muttered as she grabbed her glass of orange juice to jug it down to her throat before she got up and headed to the kitchen to clean the glass. "I would like to be alone." She requests them to be left alone. She stormed to her room, and both Ryō and Takeru could hear the door slammed. Takeru was about to go after her, but Ryō placed his hand on his son's shoulder to stop him. Takeru looked at his father, who shook his head. "Give her some time, she will come around." He said as the advice not to approach her. Takeru softened his face and then looked at where Sakuya was.
Sakuya leaned her back against the door, feeling a mix of frustration and guilt for yelling at Takeru. She broke down crying as she slid herself down to curl herself into a ball. She couldn't help, but Takeru was right, she needed to go see a therapist. She wiped her tears with her arm, she apologized to Takeru and Ryō for her outburst, suddenly she could hear her smartphone make the sound of a notification. She looked at the school bag that was on hanging by her desk, she got up and walked towards her desk. She reached out to grab her green smartphone to pull it out and touch the screen, it's the message from Fenrir with the text group chat. She unlocked it and opened the text message and read the group chat.
Fenrir: You two are doing okay?
Sakuya: Not really, I yelled at my cousin and got scolded by my uncle.
Fenrir: Damn!
Mitsuki: I was still shaken and terrified during the encounter with White Wolf. Sakuya-chan, you should apologize to your cousin.
Sakuya: I will once I calm down. I didn't mean to yell at Takeru, he was trying to comfort me. I will make the appointment with my therapist.
Fenrir: It might be the best, given how you look scared after I found you two.
Sakuya: As much as I want to press the video call and yell at you, I have to admit I am scared.
Mitsuki: Speaking of scared, Ō-kannushi-dono set up the curfew for me. He started to get afraid of White Wolf.
Fenrir: What the fuck!? Taiga put you on curfew!
Sakuya: Of course that guy will pull that shit!
Mitsuki: *sad MyMelody sticker*
Mitsuki: Most likely he wanted me safe. It also means I can't go out at night for a paranormal investigation, I'm sorry Sakuya-chan.
Sakuya: I swear Yamakawa is over-protective.
Sakuya *angry Badtz Maru sticker*
Fenrir: I know I told you two not to go forest at night, but I meant to ask you Mitsuki, what the hell is up with Taiga's reaction? I know I met him twice, but he looks like he has seen bat shit every time he sees me.
Mitsuki: I am not sure, ever since White Wolf appeared he is scared. I asked him about my mother, and all I know was that he believed she made a mistake in having a relationship with my father. I'm sorry for saying this, but I might think your presence made him think about my father.
Fenrir: None taken, I will ask my foster father about Taiga. I think he knows why he was scared.
Mitsuki: Thank you, and I have been told we will meet this weekend.
Sakuya: Honestly I've never seen Yamakawa scared shit, but please let me know what you two have learned.
Mitsuki: Of course.
Fenrir: I will see you on the weekend Mitsuki, my foster father will assure him that you will be safe with me.
Mitsuki: *Obey Me! Blush Sticker*
Mitsuki: Aww thank you Fenrir.
Sakuya: Have fun for your weekend love birds!
Mitsuki: *Obey Me! Eek Sticker*
Fenrir: It's a study group, but thanks Sakuya.
Sakuya: Have a good night.
Sakuya slowly smiled at the message before she set it down to look out the window to stare at the night sky. She closed her eyes and turned around to exit her room, then she headed downstairs and found only Ryō sitting in the living room with the paperwork. She assumed Takeru was still in the shower, so she took a deep breath and started to speak. "Uncle Ryō." She called his name, Ryō lifted his head and turned around to see his niece. She looked away shamefully because of her outburst earlier. "I… I'm sorry for the outburst earlier, especially yelling at Takeru. I know he was trying to support me since the oni attack." She apologizes to her uncle. Ryō stared at her before he softened his gaze before he looked at the mess. "I accept your apology, you should apologize to Takeru when he's out. I understand you had a trauma you had experienced." He accepted her apology. Sakuya looked at her uncle once more as she approached him. "Alright, also as he said earlier, I would like to set up my appointment with the therapist. I might need someone to talk to." She asked for a therapist appointment. Ryō glanced at her, so he picked up his smartphone as he smiled at her. "I can give you his number after I set up your appointment."
Fenrir stood in front of Yosuke's back, who was meditating in front of the Buddha statue, he glared at the old monk. Yosuke can feel Fenrir's golden predator eyes on his back from feeling a cold shiver from his neck. "Is there something you want to ask me?" Yosuke asked him while meditating. Fenrir opened his mouth. "Taiga is getting scared, mostly from me and White Wolf." He informed him about Taiga's fear. Yosuke didn't move for a few seconds, however, he slowly turned his head to the right to give him a glance with a smile of triumph. "Good, but let's not rush. Mitsuki needs to know Taiga isn't truthful and is a hypocrite, my friend is a fool to keep quiet about her biological parents. This weekend, you will help her out with the study, while I will help out Taiga as I try to convince him to tell her. If he doesn't, I will tell Mitsuki to come by if he never tells her about her mother's death." He said to him without any hesitation, while Fenrir narrowed his eyes. Fenrir turned around to leave his foster father, Yosuke dropped his smile from his silent response before refocusing on meditation.
Elsewhere, Fenrir was outside, using his inhuman speed that would be mistaken for teleporting from the ground to the roof of his house. He lazily lay back on the roof and looked toward the crescent moon. He couldn't stop thinking about how Sakuya and Mitsuki were terrified of Oni and White Wolf, especially when Mitsuki was crying. However, he lifted his hand where he petted her head, but he lowered his hand to stare at the moon again. He was thinking about Yosuke's plan to tell Mitsuki the truth, he frowned because if she learns her mother died, this will break her heart, and she will try to ask about her father. His mind slowly thinks about Mitsuki and Sakuya, mostly Mitsuki's expression of how she smiled, blushing so innocently, and being soft-hearted.
