Chapter 25
Volatile Forces
"Was-was that wind? Just now, inside the palace?" Aurelia asked, though she did not mention the sound of Sheogorath's laugh. She said a silent prayer hoping he hadn't heard it.
Ondolemar raised an eyebrow, glancing around the broom closet with a mixture of confusion and disbelief. He wasn't sure what to make of it, but the sudden gust of wind that had swept them into the cramped space felt strange indeed, especially considering the closed environment of the palace.
"Wind?" he repeated, voice laced with doubt. "In here? This is a sealed corridor."
Ondolemar tried to open the door but had no luck it was locked. Frustrated he ran a hand through his hair. Then he realized just how little space was in this broom closet. Aurelia was practically touching him, despite her attempt to lean back as much as she could to create more space between them.
"Yes wind," she replied, her voice steady despite her burning cheeks. "I use to think the ballroom was haunted when I was a kid… though I suppose even ghost wouldn't dare disrupt Thalmor order." She tried to keep her tone light, but her nerves betrayed her.
ondolemar let out a low, humorless chuckle, his golden eyes narrowed as he studied her. "Haunted halls, errant winds… curious theories, Princess," he murmured. "Though I would wager this is no mere coincidence."
"Perhaps you've been cursed by fate, Commander. Did you cross paths with a black skeever recently?"
Ondolemar's lips quirked into a faint smirk at her remark. "A black skeever? No, though I feel as though I've angered more volatile forces as of late."
Aurelia tilted her head slightly, her brows furrowed. "Volatile forces?" She repeated.
His gaze flickered away for a brief moment, as if he regretted saying anything. "Merely an Observation," he said finally.
"Do you think you may have done something for such volatile forces to have found such interest in you?"
Ondolemar's smirk faltered slightly, his expression turning into something unreadable.
"Perhaps," he admitted, his voice quieter but no less sharp. "Though I suspect it is less what I have done and more what I have allowed." His gaze went back to hers. "And perhaps, they have every right to be wrathful."
"Hmm," Aurelia hummed as if in thought. "Fortunately for you, I may know how to rid yourself of such wrathful, volatile forces, Justiciar."
Ondolemar raised an eyebrow, the faintest hint of curiosity flickered on his face. "Oh?" He asked. "And what might that be Princess? Some ancient Nordic ritual, perhaps?"
Aurelia allowed a sly smile to tug at the corner of her lips. A playful glint in her eyes betrayed her feigned seriousness. "Something far less dramatic, I assure you," she replied, leaning ever so slightly closer. "It's quite simple, really-you should welcome the spontaneity, Ondolemar."
Ondolemars expression shifted as he regarded her with bemusement and disbelief. "Spontaneity?" He repeated. "Is that your solution, Princess? To embrace chaos and call it liberation?"
Aurelia's smile widened slightly, as she continued on playfully. "Well, you seem to have gotten yourself into a quite a tight spot with these volatile forces-literally. Perhaps you simply need a new perspective."
His eyes narrowed slightly. "A new perspective, you say?" He murmured. "And how would you suggest I go about acquiring this… perspective, Princess?"
A sly smile found its way to Aurelia's lips. "You've spent so long trying to be in control of everything around you, perhaps it's time to let go of the reigns for a moment." She replied, her voice was low and coaxing. "After all, sometimes it's the most unexpected moments that offer the most clarity."
"Let go of control?" He asked, tilting his head to the side. "You're asking a Thalmor Justiciar to abandon the very principle that governs his existence?" His tone was teasing, but there was a trace of something deeper in his voice.
"Yes exactly." Aurelia said with missing a beat, as she moved just a fraction closer. "Letting go… doesn't have to mean surrendering. It means letting something new take its place. Something… unplanned."
Her eyes locked with his, and for a moment neither of them moved.
Ondolemars gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. Aurelia noticed a subtle shift in his expression. The careful tension that had held him in check cracked, if only for a fleeting moment.
"You're asking me to embrace the unknown," Ondolemar said quietly. "Aren't you afraid I might not return from it?"
His words hung in the air, and Aurelia's heart skipped a beat. She had expected a retort or a rebuttal but instead she saw something in his eyes-something that made the playful challenge between them turn into something else entirely.
"You might be surprised, Commander." She whispered. "You might like where it takes you."
Ondolemars resolve faltered as he took a step closer, the distance between them was no more. His hand brushed against hers, a fleeting touch that made her realize they were on the verge of something dangerous.
But before Aurelia could process it, his lips were on hers-tentative at first. As if he were testing the waters of this new unpredictable reality she had invited him to.
Then Ondolemars hands found her hips, pulling her closer, the space between them closed entirely as the once tentative kisses became much more impatient.
Ondolemar had pushed Aurelia against the door as he left love bites on her neck, when he realized the door had unlocked. He kissed her lips gently once more before he pulled away from her.
With a slight smirk, Ondolemar spoke in a low, teasing tone. "It seems fate has decided our time here is up." He said as he straightened himself, glancing at the door. "But when the opportunity to presents itself again, we can continue this conversation-privately, where no one can interrupt."
Aurelia's lip curled into a faint smile. She met his gaze with a mix of defiance and intrigue, as her heart was still pounding. Her voice was soft with a hint of mischief as she responded.
"I'll have to keep that in mind then."
A faint smile was on Ondolemars face as he cupped Aurelia's cheeks in his hands, "This must remain between us, Aurelia." His tone was controlled but there was a lingering warmth. "We have our roles to play. We can't forget that."
Aurelia nodded, "I understand."
His gaze lingered on her for a moment longer. His expression becoming more guarded as he withdrew his hands. "Good," he said, thought there was still warmth in his eyes. "We need to hurry back."
