Hello everyone! I've got another new idea to share with you all. This idea, if you've read the tags, tackles an Amnesiac Conan, but probably not as you would expect. I didn't know what else or how to tag this and I really wanted to keep the original title, but I'll just put it on the bottom.

For now, here you go!

Title: Ascertaining Observations

Type: Story - One Shot

Summary: A quiet whisper echoes through his room, "Kudo-kun." Then the hand leaves and the light clattering of slippers grows quieter until it's heard no longer.

"Kudo-kun." He dwells on that name, his last thought before sleeping once more, "That's my name?"

Idea: Conan's got amnesia, but that doesn't stop him from solving mysteries.

Question. Where? Assessing situation.

Sounds. Beeps. Pulses. Humming. All in one note of B flat.

Smells. Sterile cleaning fluids and medication waft through the air.

Taste. Mouth dry, throat parched.

Feel. Back stiff upon the soft bed. Head slightly elevated, pillow sunk in from the laying there too long.

Sight. Pitch black. Nothing else could really be seen. Eyes felt heavy, unable to open. They felt as held down as removing a price sticker from a hard cover book, stubborn and refusing to peel cleanly.

Conclusion. He's in a hospital or private clinic. Most likely got into an accident of some sort, unless it was intentional? He honestly doesn't know.

Beside him, a small hand is resting upon his bed, but he does not stir. A quiet whisper echoes through his room, "Kudo-kun." Then the hand leaves and the light clattering of slippers grows quieter until it's heard no longer.

"Kudo-kun." He dwells on that name, his last thought before sleeping once more, "That's my name?"

He awakens again, this time his eyes obey. As heavy weights, they struggle to flap open, but they do. The first sight, a blinding white. He slowly blinks, his vision adjusts. There on his right, the remaining imprints of a person. Based on the impression and the stray strands of long hair, it's a person of about 160cm tall and possibly female. She had laid there for several hours before getting up, possibly due to hunger or to use the restroom. How did he know this? Logic and careful observation. It's truly amazing how much an imprint and a few strands of hair on the bed could tell about someone.

To his left, a girl, elementary school age, was sitting on the metal stool reading a fashion magazine.

"Well, Kudo-kun, you did it again." Her voice low, mature, very uncharacteristic for a girl of about age five to seven.

He's confused for two reasons. Apparently, whatever he did to land in the hospital is not new. He's done something like this before. Based on her tone, it was typical, impressive, and was both a positive and negative thing all in one. The other thing, he heard the name again, "Kudo-kun." It was most likely his family name.

He wanted to ask so many questions, but all that came out instead was a hoarse, "What?"

The girl sighed, clearly prepared but annoyed to be having to speak. She explained his little stunt, how he saved all of them from a bombing and how he alone was the last to make it out. For the most part he was fine, but the major blow to his head had caused him to sleep for nearly a week which worried his girlfriend. It didn't matter to him though, not at this moment anyway, his concerns were elsewhere. That being, the girl never once mentioned anything other than his last name. Clearly, they must be familiar with one another, but not on a first name bases, unless this was by her choice. Still, there was a nagging feeling he should have been questioning her overall maturity and lack of childishness. He was really having an odd fixation on his name.

Just as she was about to ask him questions, they heard a gasp from two others. One, a teenage girl with chocolate brown hair, the same length as the stray strands on his bed. This must have been the girl who watched over him during his deep sleep, his girlfriend if the other was to be believed? To her right, a taller man with a handlebar mustache, about late thirties or early forties, possibly her father, looking wide eyed with shock at him. He goes out of the doorway and down into the hall, the girl comes up closer and yells, "Conan-kun!"

A picture was now slowly being painted in his mind, "Kudo Conan." That must have been his full name.

"Conan-kun!" Her voice is loud, a mix of worry and relief laced in her words, "I'm so glad, you're awake!"

Tears fall from her face as she embraces him in a hug. He blushes embarrassed as she does. For the first time, he notes his own size, she's practically covering him. A thought that they should be the same height flitters by, then is soon forgotten as he thinks that he is also a child like the girl still sitting on the chair.

The man comes back with a doctor, a pediatrician, given her coat has some special pins that would be entertaining and a perfect distraction for the average child to be curious about. This really confirmed it, he's really a young child.

After tending to his need, also getting water to drink, the doctor asked questions. All to assess his mental state and memories he thought.

"Do you remember your name?"

"Conan." For some reason, he didn't give his last name. In the back of his mind, he felt like saying "Kudo" was forbidden.

The older two released a breath, not even realizing they were holding it. He noted this behavior and decided to question it later.

"Do you know how old you are?"

"Six?" It didn't mean to come out as a question, but he really hesitated for some reason. Was he younger or older? Apparently the doctor just hummed and everyone around him looked slightly tense.

"Do you know where you are?"

"A hospital, but I don't know which one." He answers it confidently and without hesitation.

A couple more questions were asked before the doctor told the two to step out so they could have their talk, leaving the door slightly open. His eyes slowly traveled to the little girl's who was now thinking hard about something. It was silent between them for a few minutes, until she slowly looked back at him.

"Edogawa-kun." She spoke, her expression turned serious, a sharp gaze staring and searching him.

"Huh?" His response was automatic, but he wasn't familiar with the name.

"What's your name?"

"Huh?" He blinked twice before staring at her again.

"Your name."

"Co-nan." He said slowly.

"Last name."

He grew quiet. An odd thought came over him, he shouldn't ever utter his last name, it echoed. Should he say that one she called him by, Edogawa? But it was unfamiliar and didn't seem right. But then again, he did respond to it, just as he had Kudo, despite the lack of familiarity.

"Last. Name." This time, her voice dropped even more. He shivered in mild fear.

He gave in, "Kudo."

Her hand snapped to half cover her lips as if in a thinking pose. Her eyes soon widened, pupils dilating with worry written all over her face.

At the same time, peeking from the slight crack in the door, the older girl nearly dropped her phone.

Original Summary Of Events Before Writing It Out And Things Changed

Conan wakes up in the hospital after some case gone wrong but solved. First person he sees is Haibara who calls him Kudo-kun. He rationalizes that "Kudo" is his family name. She talks, he rationalizes. She's suspicious but dismissive for now. Mentions his "girlfriend" which he's a little lost about, but his expression is misread as annoyance. Then eventually, Ran and Kogoro come in. Kogoro gets into the boy about worrying "Ran" while she went to get the doctor. Usual questions, he's able to use deduction skills to answer the more personal questions. But even so, he can't answer everything. So they said he may have scrambled memories and to ease him into remembering proerply. The truth, he remembers nothing about these people nor his life. He's just sensitive and is able to know that they mean something to him and vice versa. The name "Edogawa Conan" throws him for a loop. It clashes with the name the girl used earlier, "Kudo-kun." When Ran takes care of him, they talk, then she tells him about Kudo Shinichi. He's thrown for a loop again cause moments earlier the auburn haired girl had mentioned she's his girlfriend. So how is it that he's a completely different age, given his more than obvious physical body's age?

Original/Alternative Title: Amnesia? Not My Problem… I've Got Bigger Things To Worry About.

Alternate Summary: OR Kudo has literally no memory of either life, but that doesn't stop him from his main goal.

It's such a curious thing, when the original idea written down takes a completely different turn when detailed into a story. In this case, it's for the amnesiac Conan. The idea is somewhat inspired by the DC movie, "Captured In Her Eyes" but also from elsewhere. It's more like those mysteries where a person wakes up not knowing the people surrounding, but they all know that person. So it's up to that amnesiac to keep on moving and find the truth, memory problems or not.

My idea is that Conan's skills would be unaffected. Age wouldn't matter, his personality remains, his intelligence in detective work wouldn't be impaired, only his personal memories will be absent. If anything, he'd be even more observant to clues, possibly get things done faster than he would have in his non-amnesiac state. Maybe?

So, here's to another random entry in the ideas series! Thanks for reading and see you on another idea soon!
