Chapter Five
The All-Seeing Eye
Sakura exhaled heavily as she let herself dangle from a metal bar in Konoha's training arena. Sweat dripped from her brow, snaking a path down her temple and over the curve of her jaw. She'd lost count of how many pullups she completed, but somewhere around her fourth or fifth set of twenty, a flash of anger reignited as thoughts from the ANBU meeting crept unbidden into her mind. Fucking Uchiha, Sakura lamented mentally. She'd barely seen hide nor hair of the man for the last two years, but Tsunade told her he'd joined ANBU after the war. It was a rather fitting position for the man, considering his emotional level was severely lacking anything human. Yes, he'd been through a hell of a lot of hardship and turmoil, but his ability to just shut off his emotions was a mechanical response that Sakura would never get used to.
It shouldn't surprise her that he'd been Baku's apprentice – the legendary devourer of dreams and nightmares with the ability to transform into a chimera. Sasuke had his own chimera of sorts; undoubtedly, his Susanoo would be invaluable to the ANBU elite. After she'd guessed his identity, Sasuke informed her that he had been hand-chosen by Baku to continue in his stead, acting as the ANBU Commander. There was a small part of Sakura that relished being chosen for the mission because of her skill, and another that was infuriated it had taken Sasuke this long to see her assets as indispensable. Two years had gone by… and the first time he sought her out was because he wanted her to join his mission. Not because he wanted to apologize for all the hell he put she and Naruto through – not because, gods forbid, he had missed her.
Fucking Uchiha.
Sakura hauled herself upward, groaning softly as she hefted herself above the bar again and again, working the muscles in her arms and core. It was sixty-some-degrees in Konoha, and Sakura had chosen a pair of black leggings and a maroon sports bra for her workout attire; a look completed by tying her long hair up in a high ponytail. Sweat slickened her skin, but she'd only expended a minimal amount of chakra. As she hauled herself up again, she felt a pair of arms circling the upper portion of her thighs, and looked down to see a set of cornflower blue eyes peering up at her with concern.
"You trying to break a record or something, Sakura-chan?" Naruto asked.
"What would be the point in that?"
"You've been at it for a while now," Naruto noted.
"So?"
"So I feel like something is wrong." He shifted beneath her so that her butt was balanced on the top of his right shoulder. The height difference forced her to let go of the bar.
"You're the one who said we should work out today," Sakura pointed out lamely. She gazed out into the distance, spotting two specks she presumed to be Sai and Kakashi. They'd opted out of the pullups and sit-ups in favor of working on their cardio, and were currently running laps around the training arena.
"Yeah, but I didn't say we should try to break Gai-sensei's record for most pullups completed in a single hour…"
"Now why on earth would I want to do something ridiculous like that?"
"You tell me?" Naruto lowered Sakura to the ground. He dropped into position for pushups and began a steady pace. "Add a little weight, would you?"
Sakura rolled her eyes at this and deftly hopped into a seated position on the back of his shoulders, easily keeping balance. "I feel as though I should be insulted."
Naruto chuckled. "It does feel like you've gained a little weight. Are your hips getting wider? – Oof!" As usual, Naruto's joke earned him a slap upside the back of the head. "I was teasing! You weigh about as much as a spatula."
Sakura quirked an eyebrow at this, crossing her arms over her chest as Naruto continued his set.
"So what gives?" he prodded.
Sakura wished she could tell him, but because she had temporarily joined an ANBU mission, she was sworn to secrecy. "Do you ever… think about Sasuke?"
Naruto fumbled just a little. "Of course I do. All the time I do."
"Well sometimes I think about him too, and usually those thoughts just make me mad." There, Sakura thought that was a safe enough admission.
"I don't get mad," Naruto told her. "I just feel… sad for him I guess."
Sakura frowned. "Sad?"
"Yeah, I mean, look at everything he's been through." Sakura was certain Naruto would have shrugged if the position had allowed for it.
"I know the two of you made up after everything and he apologized, but I guess I just kind of expected things would be different… Instead, he goes back to the same old regular scheduled programming of distancing himself from his friends and avoiding his feelings." Vaguely, Sakura thought, if anyone had a right to do that, it was Kakashi… She decided to voice this. "Kakashi has been through a world of pain and loss too, and he doesn't treat us like we're… options." And that was really it, wasn't it? To Sakura, it felt like all Sasuke saw when he looked at her was her value as a ninja… not her value as a person, not as his once-upon-a-time friend. He was fine letting two years pass without speaking to her. In fact, she was willing to bet she didn't cross his mental radar at all over that encompassing time – at least not until he needed something from her.
Naruto pushed up on his knees and Sakura slid down the slope of his back, rearranging herself in the grass beside him. "Everyone is different Sakura, people don't heal the same."
"I know that," she said in earnest. "It just doesn't seem like he's done any healing at all."
Naruto furrowed his brow. "This isn't all resurfacing because you still have feelings for him or something, is it?"
"Gods no!" Sakura expressed at once. "I just… had a bad dream last night, that's all." It was half a lie, but unfortunately it was all she was allowed to share at the moment. Kakashi and Sai were making their way back to where Sakura and Naruto were sitting in the grass. Both nin appeared winded – their hair artful messes from the breeze.
"You know what you need?" Naruto stood up and offered a hand to Sakura.
"I'm afraid to ask…" She let him haul her upright.
"A night out on the town with your best pals." Naruto grinned hugely, and his trademark smile made his eyes momentarily disappear.
Sakura tilted her head. "Are we sure that's what I need…"
Naruto wasn't one to hold his façade once he'd been called out. "Okay fine… I would like a break from all the Hokage training and I would like it if all my best pals joined me. The opening of Hanabi's new izakaya is tonight and Hinata wants us to go. Drinks are on the house."
"Can I bring my sketch pad?" Sai asked.
"Who said anything about you being one of my best pals?" Naruto teased. This comment earned him yet another smack from Sakura, who was now at least grinning. Naruto rubbed at the smarting spot on the back of his head. "So what do you say, Sakura, are you in?"
"Only if Kakashi-senpai goes too."
"Now that's playing dirty." Naruto pouted, turning something akin to puppy-dog eyes on his former teacher. "Kakashi never goes out."
"Not standing right here or anything," Kakashi said.
"Well…"
Sakura bounded over to Kakashi's side, tucking her arm through his and gently squeezed his bicep. "Please, Kakashi."
The masked nin, who was over a head taller, looked down at the pink-haired woman smiling up at his face and narrowed his eye in response.
Sakura's grin only widened. "He's coming," she announced to the group.
"Hey, I didn't say–" Kakashi held up a finger in protest as Sakura interrupted him.
"–Great! We'll meet you guys there, say, eight o'clock? Or I guess I should ask what time the opening is first, huh?"
"It opens at seven, so eight would be perfect," Naruto agreed.
Thankfully, there wasn't an ANBU meeting scheduled for tonight, and Sakura had to admit a night out with her friends was sounding quite pleasant. Maybe it would be good to cut loose and relax a little – gods only knew what was waiting for her on the other side of the covert mission…
oOoOo
At six-twenty, Sakura stood in front of her floor-length mirror, smoothing her hands over the fabric of her silk champagne cocktail dress. The contraption produced a cowled neckline while the bodice hugged her tightly and cinched at the waist. The fabric was knee-length, but there was a peekaboo slit that ran nearly to her hip and revealed the toned curves of her very feminine legs. The matching champagne heels she'd chosen only amplified the aesthetic.
"Gods, Forehead, you should really dress up more often." Ino appeared behind Sakura's shoulder in the mirror, dressed in a two-piece black dress that revealed a couple inches of her toned abdomen.
"You sure this isn't too fancy?"
Ino snorted. "Have you met Hanabi? Her izakaya is probably too fancy for Konoha. She named it The All-Seeing Eye."
Sakura made a face. "I suppose that's a nice tribute to her clan, but not really catchy for a bar."
"The Hyuga Clan is loaded with money… I don't think any of them were particularly worried about having a catchy bar name to draw a crowd." Ino sat on the edge of Sakura's bed, turning her head just-so as she hooked a pair of gold hoop earrings through her earlobes. Ino rose from the bed and stepped into a pair of high-heeled shoes that looked more dangerous than a senbon. "How are you wearing your hair?"
"Uh…" Sakura had pulled the top half of her hair up, fashioning it to resemble smaller twin buns that Tenten was known for. "Like this?"
Ino studied Sakura with a head tilt. "I was thinking it should go into a chignon, but that look works well, too."
Sakura was not overly girly and rarely did anything 'fancy' with her hair or makeup. That was Ino's department. She'd let the blond do her makeup, and was already worried she used too much eyeliner. No way was she about to let her do something to her hair that would make Sakura feel, well, less Sakura-like. "Come on, Pig. We should get downstairs. Kakashi and Sai should be here any minute."
"It's not even six-thirty yet."
"I told Kakashi to be here at six on account of his perpetual tardiness. With any luck, the man will be here by six forty-five."
Ino laughed. "You did tell them there was a dress code, right?"
"I did," Sakura said, "but whether either of them adheres to it will be a mystery." Sakura wasn't even sure Kakashi owned any civilian clothing… She bent now, straightening the thigh holster that was miraculously hidden beneath her dress and made sure the kunai was fastened in place. She didn't like going out in public unarmed, and having only one kunai at her disposal was making her feel naked.
"You can take the nin out of the field but…"
"Oh, shut it," Sakura said, grabbing her handbag and heading for the stairs. When she reached the bottom step, Sai was walking in through her front door. He was dressed in a pair of black slacks and a black button-up and had even combed his hair.
"Wow, Sakura-chan, you look positively–"
"–I'd be careful with your word selection if I were you," Ino warned him, having once been a part of Sai's backhanded compliments when he was learning how to give them.
Sai chuckled. "I was just going to say that she looks lovely, and so do you, Ino-san."
"Aw, thank you, Sai." The girls said in unison.
Sakura grinned at her teammate. "You look quite dapper yourself." The smile on her face slowly disintegrated when Kakashi walked in and robbed her of any coherent thoughts she was once capable of forming. She'd lost count of the number of times she'd seen the man shirtless, but could count on exactly two fingers when she'd seen him in formal attire. Somehow, the sight of his lean musculature wrapped in black slacks with a white button-down tucked below his belted waistline, had her imagining unspeakable things… He'd rolled the cuffs back to expose his corded forearms, and chosen to wear the black fingerless gloves of his uniform… it was such a Kakashi thing to do, but with the suspenders, the look was working for him.
"Kakashi-senpai," Ino drawled out appreciatively before Sakura's senses snap-fired back into coherency. "Look at you."
But Kakashi was looking at Sakura. His single-eyed gaze was drinking in the sight of her and this time… Sakura noticed.
"Well, we better get a move on," Ino said, grabbing Sai by the arm and pulling him through the doorway.
Sakura still hadn't moved, and instead settled for sucking on the inside of her lip as she gazed up at Kakashi. "We should–"
"Yeah." Kakashi scrubbed a hand up the back of his neck, stepping out of the way as Sakura slipped past him. He turned off her light and shut her door, stepping out onto the porch behind her. "You look stunning," he said quietly – softly, as if experimentally trying out the compliment in case it earned him a slap she usually reserved for Naruto's offhanded comments.
"Thank you," she said. "So do you. I mean, you look... good. I didn't–" Sakura shook her head, mentally berating herself as they stepped out onto the sidewalk, several feet behind Ino and Sai.
Kakashi chuckled and hooked his fingers through his beltloops. "Are you always this articulate?" he teased her playfully.
"You surprised me," she admitted. "I didn't think you owned anything… nice."
"I'll have you know I own a pair of dress robes, too."
"You're kidding me?"
"Afraid not. I've even worn them in public, and if you ask Genma and Gai, they'll attest to it." Kakashi was grinning behind his mask.
"I think I'll have to see that with my own eyes if I'm going to believe it…" Sakura rubbed at her bare arm, attempting to stave off the goosebumps the cool evening air encouraged.
Kakashi glanced down at the woman beside him. The heels she was wearing put her at eyelevel with his chin, but he still towered over her. "I should have brought a jacket."
"Are you cold?"
"Not for me," he clarified, offering Sakura his arm.
Hesitantly, Sakura accepted the invitation and huddled closer to the warmth that was Kakashi. This was better and worse all at once. Better, because she could feel the heat radiating off his body, and worse, because now she could breathe in the scent of him inescapably. Kakashi smelled like clean laundry and sandalwood – like the air in the forest in the early autumn. It was a warm and comforting scent, but it was also doing unnamable things to her insides… Gods, how long was the torture of her crush on Kakashi going to last?
"So," Kakashi said, breaking her away from her inner thoughts, "how long do we have to stay at this thing before it's acceptable to leave?"
Sakura giggled. "Haven't even gotten there and you're already scheming to leave – you perpetual loner. What could you possibly want to do instead of taking a night out with your friends?" Sakura watched as Kakashi's eyebrows lifted, and she couldn't help but think the first few things that popped into his mind probably weren't things he would share with the class. Sakura playfully punched him in the bicep.
"Ow," the Copy-nin complained. "I didn't even say anything!"
"You didn't have to," Sakura said. "I could tell which direction your prolific thought process was traveling and thought better to smack you for good measure."
Kakashi chuckled. They'd caught up with Ino and Sai and walked the last few blocks together, sharing lighthearted conversation until they reached Hanabi's new bar. It was a brick-and-mortar number positioned on a street corner with the bar name lit up in neon purple. People were leaning against the outer wall, chatting idly as they waited to get in. Ino led the way to the door, surpassing the line as if she owned the place, and had the audacity to glare daggers at the bouncer when he stopped her from entering.
"Maybe you haven't noticed sweetie, but there's a line, and right now, we're at capacity." The bouncer jerked his chin in the opposite direction, but Ino didn't even flinch.
"Going home now," Kakashi said under his breath, but Sakura clutched his elbow in her grasp and held firmly.
"I see you have a list there on your stool," Ino said in a mock saccharine tone, "maybe you should check to see if our names are on it."
The bouncer made a show of cracking his knuckles one by one, before slowly turning to grab the clipboard. "Names?" Ino delivered each of their names with an air of authority only she could pull off, and examined her manicure in a bored manner while the bouncer checked his list. After a moment, he relented with a heavy sigh. "Fine. Welcome to The All-Seeing Eye." He stepped out of the doorway and allowed the four of them to pass into the unknown beyond.
The All-Seeing Eye was by far the darkest bar Sakura had ever been in, and it took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the dimly lit venue. They passed down a set of narrow stairs, and spilled out into an underground room that gave the vibes of an old mining tavern. Metallic gold and silver stars hung from the ceiling, festooned by small lanterns that were fixed to the center of each star. Shadow and candlelight flickered on the ceiling; a hypnotic display of dancing that matched the rhythm of the slow and sensual music pouring from hidden speakers. The seating was an affair of black and gold velvet furniture intimately arranged around small tables whose surfaces were adorned by crystalline bowls of floating candles. Compliments to the overall seductive setting... Sakura suddenly became very aware that she was still clutching tightly to Kakashi's elbow. At once, she dropped her hand from his arm.
"This place is sexy," Ino said appreciatively. But it was also crowded. Sakura didn't know where to go, and luckily the decision was made for her when Naruto appeared with Hinata at his side, holding her hand in his.
"Hey guys, you made it! I was worried you wouldn't be able to get in," Naruto said.
"Hanabi was not expecting a turnout like this," Hinata added. "But I know she will be thrilled once she finds out you're here!"
"We have a table in the back," Naruto said. "And I already ordered a round of nihonshu for everyone."
"This should be fun," Kakashi said under his breath as they began weaving through the maze of human bodies. Sakura walked in front of him, close enough so that they occasionally bumped into one another due to the proximity of the crowd. When they finally reached the big round table at the back of the bar, Sakura spotted several of their friends. Gai, Genma, and Shizune were among them, as well as Tenten, Lee, Shikamaru, and Choji.
"Aye, Kakashi!" Gai leapt from his spot and enveloped Kakashi in a bone-crushing hug.
"Careful," Sakura warned him, "I just put Kakashi back together two days ago Gai-senpai."
"Oh, come now fairest Sakura-chan, Gai-senpai would never seriously injure a fellow comrade. His dignity would never allow it!" Lee spoke in his sensei's defense and a little too loudly. Judging by the empty Sake glasses stacked in front of his place-setting, Sakura guessed Lee was already three sheets to the wind.
Kakashi gave Sakura a look that conveyed his annoyance as Gai had yet to release him from his bearhug. Sakura pawed at his shoulder. "Let him go, Gai… or I will be forced to break your fingers."
"Fair enough my pink-haired companion. I will do as you wish!" Gai grinned hugely and let Kakashi out of his death grip. "Can I interest the two of you in joining Lee and I in a challenge to see who can consume the most nihonshu before throwing up?"
"Absolutely not." Sakura shook her head, and looked across the table to Genma and Shizune who were usually the more reasonably responsible nin. "Are you two seriously allowing them to do this?"
"The Green Beast is taking a night off from his responsibilities," Genma said with a shrug. "Relax Pinkie, have some fun."
"Think of it as chakra metabolizing control," Shizune added good-naturedly.
Sakura pursed her lips and sank down onto a plush, velvety couch cushion beside Hinata. The violet-eyed kunoichi pushed a Sake glass in Sakura's direction.
"Where's Neji?" she asked as she accepted the drink.
"Oh, he's probably off making rounds with Hanabi. He was her financial advisor on the whole establishment." Hinata waved her hand at the bar and all it encompassed. "They're off playing business officials now, but they'll be around later to say hi."
Kakashi sat on Sakura's free side, propping one of his elbows on the table as he accepted a drink from Naruto, (who now appeared to be joining in on Gai and Lee's drinking challenge.) "One hour," Kakashi said.
"Your lack of patience is astounding." Sakura turned to him and flashed one of her most dazzling smiles before tossing back her drink. "You heard Genma. Relax. Have some fun."
Kakashi chuckled. "I think an hour of watching our friends make fools of themselves is more than generous."
"What's the matter? Don't feel like letting Gai beat you in yet another challenge?"
Kakashi narrowed his gaze to an impossibly thin slit in response to her comment, making Sakura laugh.
"Hanabi is a mastermind," Ino gushed from across the table. She'd already abandoned Sakura in favor of sitting with her teammates. "You must be so proud of her! This place is beautiful."
"It's very moody," Tenten added, twirling a kunai around her index finger. Sakura was glad she wasn't the only nin who couldn't leave the house without a weapon attached somewhere to her person, though she very much doubted Hanabi would want the weapons out in the open…
Hinata grinned. "Yes, I'm very proud of her indeed."
"Hinata helped her with the design," Naruto announced. "It was her idea to have the star lanterns hanging from the ceiling."
Hinata blushed softly at Naruto's verbal support, and tucked her chin against her chest in attempt to hide her mild embarrassment. Sakura couldn't help grinning at the two of them as she sipped her Sake.
As the evening ticked by, the Sake was passed around the table, and laughter began to flow as freely as the drinks. Sakura could feel the tension easing from her shoulders as her body warmed and her head began swimming in that blissful state of alcohol-induced lightness. It had been too long since she'd let loose – too long since she caught up with her friends and talked about mundane, every day life events instead of the heaviness of missions and fighting. She lost track of who was winning the drinking challenge, but Lee had tapped out and was slumped over on the table fast asleep. Naruto was matching Gai drink for drink, but their reflexes were getting slower and sloppier by the minute. Sakura's stomach hurt from laughing at their expense.
Dimly, Sakura felt something brush across the top of her leg and looked down to see Kakashi's hand receding with the kunai that Sakura had holstered on her thigh. A rush of heat pooled in her chest and singed the tips of her ears. That holster had been hidden – or so she thought – and fastened dangerously close to territories forbidden to former senseis.
"No weapons in the bar," Kakashi deadpanned quietly, not that anyone would overhear. Their friends had mostly dispersed into smaller groups, and the overhead music was loud enough to drown out the sound of the chatter.
"I don't know how you managed to get that without me noticing, but you better give it back…"
"Or what?" Kakashi was grinning. "As I recall, you took one of mine a couple nights ago. I'm just taking back what's owed." Kakashi had the daring impudence to spin the blade around his finger as he sat back, oh-so-casual-as-you-please, and draped his arm across the velvet backing of her chair.
Sakura grimaced. "I would fight you for it, but I don't want to make a mess in Hanabi's new bar." It was so much easier for Sakura to lash out with threats in place of facing the absolute fact that heat was engulfing her insides, and she didn't think it had very much to do with the alcohol she'd consumed.
Kakashi casually shrugged a shoulder. "It doesn't go with your outfit anyway."
Sakura leaned forward, aware that their knees were touching beneath the table. "How'd you know I had it on me in the first place?"
Kakashi lifted his chin, and Sakura saw the tendon in his jaw flexing even beneath the confines of his mask. Almost as if he were debating what to say… "Ninja," he replied casually.
Maybe it was the alcohol loosening her inhibitions, or a maybe the sensual, dark ambience of the bar, or a combination of both – but it made Sakura feel rather brazen as she leaned towards him and set her palm on the top of his thigh. "Give it back, Kakashi. Or I'll break something a little more delicate than your fingers…"
Kakashi turned to stone in his chair, but his unrelenting gaze was fixed on her. Sakura didn't think it was anger stirring in the depths of his eye… but she was afraid to let herself read too much into it. Heat spanned low in her belly as the speakers cranked out a hypnotic song that seemed to cast a spell over her. How long were they going to hold each other's gaze like this? How long before someone noticed?
Not long, as the fates would have it… Hanabi finally made her debut appearance at their table, and fell straight into Kakashi's lap after she drunkenly stumbled against the table and knocked over a few glasses. "Oops!" She covered her mouth and giggled. "I've been celebrating a little too hard."
"Well, you are the host," Kakashi said. He shot Sakura a pleading glance, holding his arms out as if preparing for Hanabi to fall so he could catch her.
"I'm so glad you're all here!" Hanabi laughed. "Kakashi, you should wear your shirt like this–" Hanabi plucked the first three buttons of Kakashi's shirt until several inches of his toned chest was on display for the whole table to see. Kakashi seized Hanabi's wrists with one hand, gently, but effectively stopping her from unbuttoning a fourth. "Oh, what's the matter, Kakashi? Don't be so modest!"
Hinata appeared at Hanabi's shoulder and pulled the drunken nin out of Kakashi's lap. "I am terribly sorry, Kakashi-san," Hinata apologized profusely as she tugged on her sister's arm. "She's drunk and–"
"It's okay," Kakashi said. "It's not every day a pretty girl falls into my lap."
Heat burned up the back of Sakura's neck and coiled through her insides like a damned inferno. Before she realized what she'd done, Sakura was standing. "I - I think I'm going to head home," she announced. "Hinata – are you okay with everything here?" She didn't want to leave Hinata to deal with the mess, but she really needed to get some fresh air so she could think straight.
"I'll help her make sure everyone is looked after," Shizune announced from across the table. She and Genma appeared to still be fairly sober.
Sakura nodded once and forced a smile. "Great. Um, goodnight, everyone." Sakura turned on her heel, balling her hands into fists as she began navigating her way through the crowd. Her erratic heartbeat was displaced so that she could feel the distant thumping in her ears. Coming out tonight had been a mistake. Letting loose and drinking had been a mistake. Putting her hand on Kakashi's thigh had been a colossal mistake… As she gripped the railing in the stairway, the image of Hanabi falling in Kakashi's lap and unbuttoning his shirt scored across the back of her eyelids like a fresh papercut. The feeling clawing through Sakura's insides was foreign and unbidden – she couldn't, no, she absolutely wouldn't – name it jealousy.
Out on the empty street, Sakura breathed in gulps of the cool night air in an attempt to steel her nerves. It was just a crush – a stupid crush and it would go away… it had to go away.
"Sakura, wait," a voice called from behind.
She wanted to roll her eyes, but instead stood perfectly still. "What?"
"What was that back there? Are you all right?" Kakashi reached out and placed a warm palm on her shoulder.
It took all of Sakura's resolve not to pull away from his touch, and even more not to lean into it. "It was nothing," she said, forcing a small smile. "I just needed some air."
Kakashi stared at the pink-haired nin in silence, seemingly losing a battle in his mind of things he should say. She wondered if he knew she was lying, wondered if he could tell she'd left because she couldn't stand the sight of another girl in his arms... Sakura wished he would say something – anything, just to get out from the unbearable scrutiny of his gaze. Finally, the Copy-nin sighed, the lines around his eyes softening. "Let me walk you home?"
Sakura melted at the tender tone of his request. "Okay," she agreed, and took the first step down the sidewalk. Kakashi fell in sync beside her.
