"Mary Alice?" Jasper asked, eyes flickering between Tehri and Alice, unsure who needed his attention more. Alice simply stared ahead, mouth dropped.
"Mary Alice! You are very good at hide and seek." Tehri approached without fear, giggling as she grasped at Alice's hands. Alice, too stunned, didn't refuse, letting Tehri swing their locked hands back and forth. "Now that I have found you, Jaska must be nearby! Then, it will be my turn to hide!"
"Miss Tehri, you know Alice?" Lettie questioned. Tehri nodded her head, though she refused to look away from Alice.
"Oh, yes! Alice is my very best friend! And she is very good at hide and seek." Tehri threw her arms around Alice, nuzzling her head into Alice's hair.
Now that they were side by side, Edward couldn't help but notice the similarities between the two. They were about the same height, with Tehri just an inch or two taller, with similar cropped hair in nearly the same shade. Their noses were nearly identical, short and curved at the tip to give them a similar pixie-like appearance. The unburdened smile Tehri had, it was one that Edward had seen on Alice more than a few times.
If he didn't know any better, they could have been siblings.
"You…know me?"
"It is no wonder I haven't been able to find you! Jaska will be upset you broke the rules and hid in here, but I'm sure he's very tired of hiding alone." Tehri pulled away, patting Alice's head. "Let's go find him!"
Tehri started pulling on Alice's hand, practically yanking her to the door despite Alice's vampire strength.
"Wait, wait, wait!" Alice tried to say, digging her heels into the ground, but it was no use. Instead, it was Jasper who intervened, pulling Alice behind her. Tehri, not expecting such force, nearly stumbled as they disconnected. Edward nearly flinched as a crackle of energy shot through the room. Though she turned with a pout, the picture of innocence, Edward's shoulders started hunching involuntarily.
"We will help find your brother," Lettie intervened, pulling Tehri's eyes away. Just like that, the tension lowered once again. Tehri was on Lettie just as quickly, throwing her arms around her. Lettie ran a soothing hand up and down her back, flickering her eyes to Jasper quickly. "Is there anything we may need to know about him, in order to locate his whereabouts?"
"Oh yes! He's very tall, and Mother said he's very handsome. He has a scruffy beard that makes him look like Santa Claus, and he got to go wherever he wanted with a big ring of keys!" She mimicked a large man by puffing out her chest, taking over exaggerated steps. "He kept the keys here," she gestured to her hip," and said 'Don't touch them Titi. You could get in trouble, Titi'."
"A janitor," Edward mouthed to Jasper, whose face lit up in recognition. He kept an eye on Tehri, who was still mimicking her brother, as he turned to the nearest cabinet, the faded label reading 'staff'. His fingers moved quickly.
"He played with me all night, and then we could start hide and seek when the sun rose. He was very bad at playing when it was sunny, but he said it was because it made his eyes hurt. He would take all day to find me! But then at night, we would play lots of games, and he would let me go with him as he visited all the rooms here." She laughed, falling into Lettie's arms. "I didn't know he would be so good at hiding because he's never done it before, but I still haven't found him!"
"Was there…" Edward started hesitantly, refraining from flinching as Tehri set her milky eyes on him. "Was there anything unusual about your brother?"
"My brother is the best!" she replied defensively. Edward stuck his hands up.
"I only mean, did he ever tell you why the sun hurt his eyes so much?" To this, she scrunched up her face, mind whirling.
"He just said he couldn't be outside. 'Go out and play Titi. The sun hurts my eyes, Titi. Don't open the curtains, Titi!'." She giggled again. "He's very demanding."
"And his…eyes?"
"His…eyes?" Tehri's smile dropped, mind conjuring the image of a man. He looked older than her, around mid-30s, with a salt and pepper beard and closely cropped hair. His face was flickering back and forth between a warm smile and a concerned look as if Tehri couldn't fully remember what he looked like. His eyes, however, confirmed Edward's suspicion, flickering between red and brown. "His eyes are…-"
Her grip tightened on Lettie.
"Jaska Korhonen?" Jasper's voice had them all turning to him, Tehri's eyes lighting up. But it was Jasper's expression that stopped anyone from saying anything.
"My brother!" She glanced at the file in his hand, shrinking back. "We are not allowed to see the files."
"It might help us find him," Lettie supplied, but Tehri merely shook her head.
"He's hiding. He's hiding," she repeated as if she was trying to convince herself.
"What does it say?" Edward asked. Jasper merely shook his head, passing it over to read.
By the look of the place and the minimal knowledge Edward had of asylums, he wasn't surprised to see the file looking haphazardly put together, random handwritten pieces and notes. If he was being honest, he was surprised to see anything at all on a janitor who could only work nights, but then again, this institution was stately funded, and there had to be some paper trail or another to receive funding. Jaska Korhonen, aged 38, started working at the asylum in June of 1903, tending to the grounds. There was a hastily scrawled note at the top that his sister, Tehri Korhonen, was being treated at the facility and they should be kept together, as she was much more manageable when he was around. The next page was a doctor's messy note, debating entering Jaska into the asylum program due to his reactions to his sister's passing. There were two envelopes pinned to the back, each with $1.47 stuffed inside. Wages due, but never picked up. Then, at the very back, was a police report. Edward nearly dropped the file.
"What? Edward, what is it?"
"Alice…"
"I don't appreciate you two keeping this from me." Her face was alight with fury, hand reaching out to snatch the file. Edward took a step back. "Tell me! I deserve to know."
"Mary Alice Brandon."
"...what?"
"It's a police report. Jaska Korhonen was being reported because he broke out a patient from the facility in August of 1920. And that patient was Mary Alice Brandon." Alice simply looked at him. Her face was nearly unreadable, flipping through emotions faster than he could identify, and her mind…her mind was silent. As if she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Brandon…" Jasper muttered, turning back to the filing cabinets. He opened two drawers before pulling out a file. It was in the worst condition yet, pages yellowed and stained, with several pages sticking together, but Jasper opened it as best he could, handing it to Alice. Her hands shook as she grasped at it. "I didn't realize…It's simply labeled Mary Brandon, so I didn't think it could be you."
Her eyes devoured all the information on the page, swearing under her breath as a page crumbled in her hands from her speed. He could see the pages held no good news even from where he was standing.
"Broke out?" Tehri's voice wavered as she looked between the vampires in the room, lip wobbling. "What does that mean?"
"It means he left. He ran away with Alice, but we don't know why," Edward gritted out, trying to make sense of Alice's jumbled thoughts.
"He wouldn't!" Lettie shushed Tehri quickly, moving to stroke her hair again. "He's still here! He's hiding!"
"I was having visions before I was turned," Alice whispered, almost to herself. Jasper stepped closer, putting a comforting arm around her shoulder, though Edward knew he was also stepping closer to confirm the information for himself. "That's why I was here. Hallucinations, they called them, but there's a note here that says the nurses trusted what I said because I always got the weather right."
"Just like you do now," Jasper mumbled, carefully turning the page. His eyes only skimmed it for a moment, before his shoulders hunched, a growl flowing from his lips. Alice's jaw dropped.
"Alice?"
"James." Edward's body tensed, involuntarily tensing at the name. "James. He was here. That's why he knows me."
"What are you talking about?"
"Doctor's note. Says that Alice was acting out because her hallucinations switched to focus on a singular event, where someone called James was going to kill her. But I didn't see a James in any of the staff files." Jasper growled again, turning to slam his hand into a filing cabinet behind him. It crumbled easily against his hand. "He was stalking her. It's the only way she could have known before it happened."
"We don't know that-" Alice started, but Jasper quickly shook his head.
"If your visions are anything like when you were human, then that's the only explanation." Jasper ran a hand through his hair, a million and one ways to kill James running through his mind.
"Then that could explain why Jaska took Alice," Edward said, looking between him and Alice. "Maybe he was trying to protect her. If he was a vampire-"
"My brother is not a vampire!" Tehri ripped herself away from Lettie, glare on her face as she took a step towards Edward. "He's here. I know he is! He wouldn't…he wouldn't leave me behind!"
"Miss Tehri!" Lettie stepped forward to grab her, eyes pleading. "Please, we are simply trying to uncover the truth. You are untethered, so please remain-"
"I couldn't handle it," she whispered, grasping Lettie's hand. "He was so sad all the time, so I…so, I-"
"Oh, Miss Tehri…" Lettie gave her hand a comforting squeeze.
"I didn't mean to!" she wailed. "I just wanted to go outside. He never brought me outside! He always needed to be with Mary Alice and I wanted to go with him. And then he'd come back, and he'd be sad again. But he said, he told me, he would never leave."
"You could not have known," Lettie tried to soothe, but it only seemed to work her up more.
"I just have to find him!" Tehri whipped around, launching herself at Alice, who only just managed to step out of the way. She began to float again, hands grasping but not catching anything. "Mary Alice! Please tell me! You have to know where he is!"
"I-," Alice looked between Tehri and the file in her hand. "I'm sorry. I don't know. Even if I did, I don't remember."
"We need to go. Now." Jasper whispered, eyes flickering to the door.
That was obviously the wrong thing to say.
In an instant, Lettie stepped between Tehri and Edward, a protective hand stopping him from moving forward. Jasper tensed, doing the same to Alice.
Between them, Tehri began to glow, feet rising off the floor.
"Miss Tehri-"
"Where is Jaska? I know he's hiding somewhere…" A shiver ran down his spine at the echoey quality her voice took on. "He's been hiding for too long…"
"I'm sorry. I don't know," Alice pleaded, clutching her file close to her body.
"I know you're keeping him away from me."
"Tehri, no!" Lettie shouted, but it was too late.
With a scream, Tehri's mouth contorted, opening wider than should be possible, a black hole in the center of her elongated face. She launched herself at Alice, who managed to dodge by rolling across the floor, scrambling to get to the door. Lettie jumped as Tehri turned to Jasper, barely managing to get her arms around her.
"Go, Jasper!" Lettie cried, locking her arms to keep Tehri from reaching him.
Edward's arm was tugged before he could step forward, yanked side by side with Alice as Jasper pulled them through the door. They were out in the cold early morning air before he even realized what happened.
"Wait!" But Jasper simply yanked Jaska's file from his hand, pushing it into Alice's arms. Then, he wrapped his arms around Edward, locking his arms at his side, and running deep into the woods. No matter how much he thrashed, Jasper remained firm, twisting and turning on their path so Edward would remain unbalanced. "No, Lettie!"
"Shut up," Jasper growled, easily jumping over a river despite Edward's resistance. "She's right behind us."
"Jasper…"
"No!" Despite the way his voice softened for Alice, he remained firm. "We have our answers. We were stupid enough to separate from the others when you knew he was going to target you, and now we may have a malevolent on our ass. We're going to Brazil. Now."
