Soon the three find a table in the corner of the diner. Tenzin was still frowning and Korra was still pouting while Yuze was looking at them in amusement, when a woman approached them.
In her peripheral view, she could see that the woman was wearing a Southern Water Tribe dress.
"Can I have your order ma'ams, sir?"
Yuze looked down at the menu and looked for food that would satisfy her. Apparently, this diner offers dishes from all around the world.
Yuze waited for Tenzin and Korra to finish ordering before her turn.
Yuze read the name of the dish, "I would like a—" she stopped as she looked up and saw who's the woman.
The woman looked at her with wide eyes, "Yuze?"
Yuze blinked as she looked at her old friend as she stood up, "Chyou?"
The woman named Chyou didn't turn her eyes away from her as she shouted, "Jun!"
"Yes, honey?!" a man shouted from the back of the counter where the kitchen is.
"Come here for a moment!" Chyou shouted again, still staring at Yuze.
A man wearing Earth Kingdom clothes came out from the counter.
"Why, Chyou? Is there a customer flirting with—" Jun stepped out and stopped when his eyes landed where his wife was together with a familiar face, "Yuze?"
"Jianjun?" Yuze said in disbelief.
Then the shock on Jun's face brightened, and his agape mouth turned into a large grin, "Yuze!"
Jun rushed towards Yuze and gave her a hug, lifting her to the ground in the process, "N—nice to s—see you... too, J—Jun. B—but... I ca...can't breathe!"
Jun put her down and let her go, smiling sheepishly as he stepped back, "Sorry."
Yuze waved her hand dismissively then she turned her gaze to the woman who's now got recovered by the shockness and now staring at them with a blank face. Yuze starts to walk towards Chyou with a smile on her face and arms spread wide.
Chyou also starts walking towards Yuze to meet her halfway, "Yoyo—" the waterbender punches the firebender in the face making the latter turn her head to the side because of the impact.
Tenzin and Korra stood up and were about to take action when Yuze raised her hand to stop them then she faced Chyou again whose face was still devoid of expression but there were now tears forming in the corner of her eyes.
"Don't Yoyo me. After almost five years you will show up here and greet us as if nothing's happened?" Chyou said in a cold tone, however, you could also hear the pain in her voice.
Yuze felt regret as she saw the pain in her old friend's eyes, "I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" the waterbender let out a dry laugh, "That's all you going to say? You left us with nothing but a letter, Yuze. Just a letter!"
Jun looked at his wife and his old friend worriedly then he glanced at the customers who were now also watching them from their seats, then he spoke to them, "I think you should talk this out in private."
Chyou glanced around and scowled at the customers, making them turn their gaze away from them or continue their food. Though they still glance at them every now and then.
The waterbender took a deep breath to calm herself then she turned on her heels, "Fine." Then she starts walking towards the door at the side of the kitchen where the office is.
Jun followed his wife with his eyes before he looked back to his old friend, "I'm sorry for that, Yuze."
Yuze sighed as she wiped away the blood on the corner of her lips, "It's fine. I deserve it."
Jun shook his head, "No. You don't, I know you left because it's hard for you to bear the pain you were feeling after the accident, and Chyou understand it too. It's just that, she missed you and she was hurt when you left us without saying goodbye personally and only in a letter you left."
Yuze just nodded even if the events flashed on her mind for a moment when the earthbender mentioned it. The firebender shook her head before they even resurfaced fully. She doesn't want to have a panic attack here in public. She doesn't want even more to show vulnerability to the people close to her, "Let's just get to her, shall we? I don't want to make her angry more than she is now."
Jun nodded and he and she started walking but also stopped when they saw that Korra intended to follow.
Yuze turned to her former student, "Korra don't follow us."
"But I want to!" the teenager protested, "What if she hurt you physically again? I don't want that to happen again."
"Korra," Yuze sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Korra, it's a personal matter and we can't interfere with it," Tenzin said looking at the young Avatar seriously. Though internally, he too wants to follow the firebender to make sure she is safe.
"No. I will go with you, and that's final," Korra said crossing her arms with a frown on her face.
Yuze was about to open her mouth when Jun spoke, "I think it's just okay for her to come. I know she's just worrying about your sake," he paused for a moment, "Master Tenzin can come too if he wants."
Yuze looks like contemplating if she will allow it or not but with one look at Korra, she knows she has no choice but to let the Avatar come with them. The teenager is stubborn and will do anything to get her way. Yuze sighed and nodded, "Fine."
Korra smiled widely but it also disappeared in an instant when Yuze shot her a glare, "But you must not speak a word nor intervene. Do you understand?"
Korra nodded, "Yes, sifu."
Yuze nodded then the four of them went into the office where they saw Chyou standing in front of the window, her back facing them, overlooking the view of the sea.
"Why, Yuze? Why did you leave us?" the waterbender asked.
"You perfectly know why, Yo. I can't stay there in our home. I needed to get away because staying there would only bring back the memories of what happened on that day."
"I know, Zei. What I can't understand was the way you were pushing us away," Chyou turned around, eyes unmistakably red due to crying, "Are we truly friends, Yuze?"
"Of course."
"Then why?!"
"Because I'm afraid! Okay?" Yuze shouted as she felt her eyes sting and tears started to form, "I'm afraid that the accident might repeat again. I'm afraid that I triggered it again. I'm afraid that I might lose control. I'm afraid I might hurt you all or worse!" tears fell down from her eyes, "I'm afraid I will see on your eyes the way they look at me like I'm a monster—"
"You're not a monster, Yuze—"
"Of course, I am! Who human will do that to them?! Only monsters will!"
Chyou looked at her old friend with sadness, "Yuze, it's an accident. No one blames you for what happened."
Yuze laughs humorlessly, "That's the worst. No one blames me for what happened," her voice shakes as well as her body, "No one blames me for what I have done. No one blames that I ki—"
Chyou rushed towards her friend as she saw Yuze was about to fall down. Both of them fell to the ground, and Chyou just hugged her friend who's now crying her heart out loud.
"Let them go, Yuze. Let the people go," Chyou whispered as she rubbed a comforting circle at her friend's back.
Korra watched as Chyou whispered nothing but soothing words at her former teacher as the latter wept. She had already heard too many times the word accident mentioned around her Firebending Master ever since she met her. To all of the times, she heard everyone whisper it she had a guess or two about what did happen on that day. The day that broke her master greatly. Korra remembered the day she had first met Yuze. She recall how the firebender smiled at her but there was no life in her eyes. She could remember that every now and then she would see the older woman staring at nothing as if she was recalling something. She could also remember the time she heard Yuze scream in the middle of the night from her room a couple of times. Then a memory of an event that happened three years ago resurfaced from the back of her mind
Korra thrust her arm, shooting fire at the member of the order of the white lotus in front of her, making her opponent toss back. The 14-year-old girl panted as sweat glistened on her forehead. She looked at her three opponents who were now getting back to their feet. The Avatar took a stance.
"Okay, I think that will be all for today."
Korra let her body relax and turned her head to her Firebending Master. Who's now smiling and walking towards her. The white lotus guys also started to walk away, perhaps turning back to their room to rest.
"You did a good job, Korra. Though your stance is a little bit off, I'm sure you will master it with more practice," then Yuze noted how the younger girl looked like about to pass out any moment from exhaustion, "And you need to work on your endurance. The element of fire is different from others. While the other three elements use the surroundings for them to bend, the fire element on the other hand comes from within yourself and does require energy to produce a flame." she opened her palm to produce a fire to emphasize the flame.
"Yeah, I already know that," Korra rolled her eyes.
"Just saying," Yuze shrugged.
Korra took a deep breath before she straightened though she winced at the process as her sore muscles moved, "I have been thinking. When are we going to spar?"
"What do you mean? We always do spar," Yuze said though she knew what the girl meant.
"Yes, I know. But we never did spar with bending," Korra responded, then she paused for a moment before she spoke once again, "Why don't we spar without bending today?"
Yuze laughs, "Spar? Right now? You're about to pass out and you want to spar with me?"
Korra waved dismissively, "I can manage," then she took a stance, "Let's go."
She didn't know if it was just a delusion caused by extortion, but she saw a panicked look on her teacher's face. But as soon as it came it also disappeared.
"Maybe next time, Korra."
Korra whined, "You have already said that too many times. And now is the day we are going to spar."
Yuze shot her a cold stare making the Avatar taken aback because she had never done that to her before even though she was stubborn all the time, "Korra, don't be stubborn. When I said no, then it's a no."
With that Yuze turned on her heels and began to walk away but Korra as stubborn as she was, shot a fire in her direction. Yuze stopped dead at her track and without doing anything or looking back, the fire went in a different direction as if there was an invisible force protecting the firebender.
"Do you want a spar?" Yuze asked, her tone sounds cold. Then she looked from her shoulder, "Then fine."
Then Yuze turned on her heels and sprinted towards Korra. The two exchange blows and attack. Red and blue flames hit together. Korra for a few seconds got overwhelmed by how her teacher sparred. It feels like it's a matter of death and life. Though she can do offense for a few times, she's more in defense as Yuze continues attacking her without pause. She was doing very well dodging the older teen's blows, until she misstepped, almost making her drop to the ground but she managed to find her center again, unfortunately, that's when Yuze blasted a fire to her. When Korra notices the incoming flame, it's too late for her to avoid or disperse it. Korra was thrown out to the ground, grasping her arm while screaming in pain.
Yuze stopped in the midst of attacking and stared at her in shock. Korra looked at her on the verge of tears as the burn on her arm ached.
"I—" Yuze stepped forward and though Korra didn't mean to, she instinctively flinched and scrambled away from her.
Then the Avatar saw how the blood drained from her teacher's face, eyes wide open, her expression turning into fear as her body trembled and her breath became quicker.
"I'm sorry," Yuze said as her breath became shallow and her knees weakened making her drop to the ground, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry..."
Korra watched worriedly as her Firebending Master curled herself and rocked herself back and forth, she stood up and walk slowly towards her, "Sifu?"
Korra reached her hand out, hoping to get her teacher to get out of whatever was happening to her. But it only makes things worse. It alarmed the older teen and made her panic. Yuze swatted her hand, "No! Don't touch me! I don't want to hurt you."
Korra was taken aback for a moment before she observed the older teen and that's when she knew what was happening to her. She had seen this happen to some of the older members of the order of the white lotus that had experienced the previous war— panic attack. The Avatar also saw how others calmed down or brought them back to reality once again. So she tried once again, "Sifu, it's me, Korra."
But Yuze didn't show a sign that she had heard her and just backed up until her back hit the wall, "No! No! Don't come near me. Don't."
Korra felt her heart breaks at the sight of the broken teenager. She doesn't know what happened in the past that made her said those words.
She wants to help her teacher get out of where she is right now in her head, but she is just making it worse for the older teen. That's why she turned on her heels and looked back at her teacher once again before she ran towards the hut where she knew Master Katara was staying. The moment she got there, Katara was in the middle of knitting a shirt. Katara was startled for a moment but when she saw the scared look at Korra's face she began to worry. That's when she said that Yuze was having a panic attack.
When they arrive where Korra left Yuze, the firebender is still mumbling words while still curling and rocking herself back and forth. Korra watched as Katara slowly walked towards the firebender while speaking soothing words in a gentle tone. She watched as Katara calmed Yuze. She watched how Yuze got back to reality. She watched as Katara gathered the sobbing younger woman into her arms.
That night, Korra approached Katara about what made her teacher have a panic attack. She got a feeling that the older woman knew the reason and story behind it. But Katara just smiled sadly at her and said, "I can't answer you, my child, as it's not my story to tell. Though, I could tell you that something happened that greatly scarred her."
Now she is watching her former teacher sob for the same reason as the other times.
Korra is aware that she doesn't know what really happened in her former teacher's past, but she hopes that someday she will be healed and have peace.
