"And in the final round, the Buzzard-Wasps won with a decisive knockout," Korra read the newspaper then she looked up and smiled broadly, "What do you say we go to the arena tonight, catch a few pro-bending matches?"
Tenzin furrowed, "That sport is a mockery of the noble tradition of bending." he said as he raised his hand and took a sip at his teacup.
"Come on, Tenzin, I've dreamed about seeing a pro-bending match since I was a kid, and now I'm just a ferry ride away from the arena," Korra pointed at her back with her thumb, where the arena.
"Korra, you're not here to watch that drivel. You're here to finish your Avatar training. So for the time being, I want you to remain on the island."
Korra rested her elbow on the table, leaned her chin on her hand, looked at the nomad, and said flatly, "Is that why you're keeping the White Lotus sentries around to watch my every move?"
"Yes," Tenzin responded, "In order to learn airbending, I believe you require a calm, quiet environment, free from any distractions."
"All right," Korra said dejectedly, "You're the Master."
Then both of them turned their head when they heard the sound of someone groaning and saw Yuze walking slowly with her shoulders slouched and a deflated look on her face.
The firebender plopped down beside Tenzin and just stared at nothing, not moving or saying anything.
"Why are you here?" Tenzin asked the Firebending Master, with a confused look on his face, "Aren't you supposed at Héxié, working?"
"That's right."
"Then, why are you here?"
Then all of a sudden the firebender cried in an overdramatic way, "I got kicked out!"
Tenzin raised an eyebrow, "On your first day?"
"Yeah!"
Korra looked at her former teacher with a puzzled look, "How? I mean, you're not even gone for three hours.'
"I almost put the kitchen on fire, and Chyou was pissed, it's good that Jun is a nice guy and gave me a second chance," Yuze sniffed, "He said that if I can't be used in the kitchen, then maybe as a waitress I can. But then—" then she bawled, "I messed up because I got in a fight with one of the customers."
Tenzin sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose, "I swear, someday your temperament will put you in danger."
Yuze huffed and crossed her arms, "Well, that guy deserved it. I mean, I already rejected him kindly but then he grabbed my butt! That disgusting man!"
The two panicked when the room's temperature increased to the point that all of the people inside the dining hall were sweating profusely.
"Yuze, you're making the room's temperature higher. You need to calm down," Tenzin calmly said to not make the woman angry any further. While Korra on the other hand was already pouring tea on a teacup.
Yuze closed her eyes and took a breath in and out. She repeated it a few more times until she cooled down. Korra offered the tea to Yuze and when the latter sensed the heat coming from it, she took it without opening her eyes, "Thank you, Korra," and she took a sip from it.
Korra and Tenzin sighed in relief as well as the people in the room when the temperature gradually decreased. The two looked at the firebender and watched her calmly sip the tea and took a deep breath.
Yuze opened her eyes and lowered the teacup at the table. She sighed, "Now, what I'm going to do?"
"Find another job?" Korra asked, looking at her former teacher with an expression that said obviously.
"Well, yes, but what job? I don't know if there's any job that's suitable for me. I mean, the only ones I know are how to fight, operate missions, guard the Fire Lord, kinds of stuff like that."
Korra thought for a moment and suggested, "How about desk work? Paperwork?"
"Well..." Yuze smacked her lips, "I did a lot of paperwork when I was a Captain Guard, so I think it will do."
"Great!" Korra exclaimed then she picked up the newspaper and flipped the pages and turned the newspaper for the firebender to see, "The Police Headquarters was hiring for a new receptionist, you can apply if you want?"
"Hmmm..." Yuze thought for a moment, "I can try, as long as I'm not going to the field, I think it's fine."
Yuze bounced her foot as she looked at the clock that said it was already 3 in the afternoon. Then her eyes turned towards her right where five more applicants were also waiting for their names to be called up.
Yuze sighed and looked at the window behind her where a large glass window was. Below she could see the people walking and satomobiles moving on the road. Then her eyes landed on the sidewalk and saw a woman and a little girl. A mother and a child. She smiled though there was a hint of sadness there as she watched how the mother tickled her daughter and how the little girl squirmed to get away at her mother's grasp while giggling. Then a memory of why she is here right in this moment flashed through her mind.
Yuze was wiping the side table beside the sofa in the living room of her adoptive mother's house. She was given a week off from training Korra and the first thing she thought was to visit her adopting mother's house, so that's why she's here, cleaning her former now abandoned house.
As she was cleaning she stumbled at a newspaper of nearly twenty-seven years ago. She picked it up, curious about what was in the newspaper. She arched an eyebrow when she read the headline of the newspaper.
"The Chief's Daughter Has Caught Another Man's Heart."
Yuze whistled as she read the headline, "That was one hot tea out there. Hmmm, let me see the content."
"As all of the people know, there's something going on between Lin Beifong, the daughter of the Police Chief, and Master Tenzin, son of Avatar Aang. A handful of times, Master Tenzin was seen visiting Captain Beifong at the Police Headquarters with flowers and gifts. But it appears that the Chief's daughter not only caught the young airbender's attention but also the newly appointed Captain of the Police Department, Captain Jin. The Police Captain was the talk of the town as he was known for his accomplishments over the past few months, making him become popular among the ladies from the city. Just last night, Captain Beifong and Captain Jin were seen together at Kwong's Cuisine. Netizens think that it's just purely business, but many assume that it's not as you can see in the photo, the usually stern Captain Beifong was laughing at what Captain Jin has said. Is this going to be a love triangle between the three? If it is, who's going to win the Chief's daughter's heart?"Yuze burst out laughing, "I bet it's nothing!"
Then her eyes went to the picture, staring at the Chief of Police of the Republic City. She observed how the woman laughed, a warmth in her eyes. It was the first time she saw the esteemed Chief happy and laughing— well not the first, she had seen that look on a few old newspapers way back before she was even born. Yuze smiled sadly as she gazed at the woman, because now, whenever she saw the woman in the newspaper, there was no warmth and light in her eyes. It's lifeless. "I wonder what happened to your past that it put out the light in your eyes."
Yuze stared at it for a moment before she shook her head, "Why am I talking to a newspaper? I look like stupid."
She walked towards the shelf across the room when she bumped her foot on the side table and the things at the top of it knocked down on the floor, creating noise.
"Spirits!" Yuze hissed as she lifted her leg and grabbed her aching pinky toe on her foot. As the pain subsided — though just a little — she put her foot down with a hissed and bent down to pick the things on the floor but her hand stopped as her eyes fell down to a familiar book with black leather cover. She slowly picked it up and stared at it. She had seen it a few times when her adoptive mother was still alive. It's her adoptive mother's diary.
Yuze stared at it for a moment and she shook, "No. This is not yours, Yuze. Don't open it." But before she could register it, she had already sat down on the sofa and opened the book. She doesn't know why, but she felt like their something in it. That the questions she longs for answers were in it.
She read the first few pages of her adoptive mother's diary when she was still in her 20s until she got on the page in the month before she was adopted. Her breath shakes and her hands tremble. She swallowed the lump in her throat before she flipped a few pages and stopped.
April 25, 151 AG My old friend, Lian, whom I hadn't seen in years came to visit me with a baby girl around nine or ten months old cradled in her arms. The baby was crying while Lian was scowling, snapping now and there to stop the baby crying but it just made the baby worse. I reprimanded her and took the baby from her and tried to soothe the baby. A few moments later the baby went quiet and went to sleep. I asked Lian what she was doing here and if the baby was hers. But Lian didn't answer me and just asked if I could do her a favor and take care of the baby while she's away, cause there's something she needs to do. I asked her for how long and she said just for a few days. I've got a bad feeling about this but I still said yes."Lian," Yuze whispered the name.
Is she my birth mother?
Yuze flipped the pages hastily and stopped again.
June 25, 151 AG It's been two months since Lian left Yuze to me. She said it would be just for a few days and I waited but she didn't come back. I'm beginning to think that Lian didn't want the baby and left Yuze to me for good.Flipped. Flipped. Flipped.
March 12, 152 AG It's official, Yuze is now my daughter. Though it's just by paper and not by blood, I still love her like she's my own. It's also been almost a year since Lian left Yuze to me. I still don't have a clue where she is right now or if she's still alive 'cause, for all the letters I've been sending her, there's not even just one response. I have mixed feelings about this actually: anger for Lian, for abandoning her child, sadness for Yuze, as her mother doesn't even want her even just a bit, and happiness, as I have now a daughter.Sobbed. Flipped. Flipped. Flipped. Flipped. Flipped. Stopped.
September 17, 156 AG It's been six years since Yuze was left to me by her irresponsible mother. I'm still mad at her, so much so that I can't even say her name without vomiting or anything. Though I'm angered by her, I'm also grateful as she gave me the most beautiful child I have ever seen, my daughter, Yuze. My sweet little child, for the past years, had grown up into a lovely little girl. She's so kind, jolly, and beautiful. I truly love my daughter. I also have now a clue where her mother is. A good friend of mine told me that he saw the bitch walking down that street of the Republic City. Now that I know, I want to go there and give her a piece of my mind.Flipped. Blank.
Yuze sobbed as she hugged the diary close to her heart. So that's her adoptive mother's last entry before her health goes south and leaves the world of living.
Yuze wiped her cheeks staining tears with her palm. She clutched the diary. She had now decided, after the Avatar's finished her firebending training, she would go to the Republic City to find a woman named, Lian, her birth mother, and ask her the questions she had long wanted to know the answers to.
And that's why she's now here in Republic City. The firebender sighed and diverted her eyes away from the mother and child.
"Next!"
Yuze turned her head to look at the woman who went out of the Chief's office just for another to enter the room. Then her eyes went to the one who had announced it. She raised a brow in confusion as she stared at the police officer.
The firebender edged closely to her seat and leaned forward towards the nearest police officer from her place.
"Excuse me," Yuze called politely.
The policeman lifted his head from the file he was reading and raised a brow, "Yes? What can I do to you, miss?"
"I'm just curious," she nodded towards the police officer in front of the Chief's office, "Why does an officer was the one who's announcing? Doesn't the assistant or secretary of the Chief who needs to do that job?"
The police officer barked a laugh while shaking his head, "The Chief doesn't have an assistant or secretary."
Yuze blinked then exclaimed, "What? What do you mean she doesn't have? I mean I'm sure she needs it."
The police officer shrugged, "I don't know. Maybe because she's just so independent she doesn't need or want one."
Yuze leaned back with a disbelief look on her face. "She's a psycho."
"Okay, the interview's now closed. I'm sorry but there's now someone who got the job. You can now go home," the police officer announced.
All of the remaining people who went for the interview stood up while groaning and muttering curses under their breath, while Yuze on the other hand remained seated.
Then a smirk slowly formed on her lips, "No assistant, huh?"
Lin rolled her shoulders and her neck as she felt the burning of her muscles from sitting for so long. She leaned her back against her chair and sighed.
"Finally," the Chief said as she knew she could now finally leave in peace.
Lin yawned, her eyes were slowly closing but she snapped them open again and shook her head, trying to get rid of her sleepiness. But it's really tempting.
"Just... for a second..." Lin gave in and let her eyes close but she jumped at her seat when the door of her office flung open and barged in the Firebending Master of the Avatar.
"Beifong!" Yuze shouted waving energetically with a wide grin on her face.
"I'm sorry, Miss, but you can't —"
Yuze raised her hand to stop the officer who was trying to stop her from entering the room, "It's okay, Beifong knows me."
Lin's eyes narrowed, her eyebrows furrowed. "What are you doing here? Get out of here!"
"Now, now, Beifong," Yuze waved her hand as she walked towards the chair in front of Lin's desk and sat, "I've just got here and you already want me to be gone. That's rude."
"You barging in my office without permission is what you'll truly call rude," Lin hissed as she closed her eyes and massaged her temple as she could now feel the impending headache. Then she spoke without opening her eyes, "It's fine. You can now go back to work, I can handle this woman over here."
"Y—yes, ma'am."
Then there's the sound of the door closing.
The Police Chief continued massaging her temple while the Firebending Master wandered her eyes on the things inside of the room.
"Nice room you've got here," then her eyes went to the shelves in the corner of the room and her eyes widened, "Oh my gosh! You've got a complete book set of the Detective Jiahao Series! Did you know that there's new—"
"Let's cut to the chase. Why are you really here, Yuze?" Lin cut off the firebender. She opened her eyes and glared at the young woman in front of her.
Yuze smiled sheepishly, "Oh, sorry, I just got a little excited when I saw the series," then she leaned her back on the chair, "I'm here to apply for a job."
Lin frowned, "Didn't the officer outside announce that someone already got the position?"
"Yes, yes. He did."
"Then what are you still doing here? Get out. Now."
"True that's the reason why I'm here for the first place, but sadly someone took my supposedly job away from me," Yuze angrily huffed, "But never mind that, I've got now a more interesting and I'm sure high payment job."
Lin raised an eyebrow, "And that is?"
Yuze smirked and leaned forward, "I'm applying as your personal assistant."
Lin stared blankly at her for a moment before she laughed, "I'm sorry but we or I don't have a job opening for such a thing."
"I know. But I'm still applying to become your personal assistant."
Lin stopped laughing and looked at her dead in the eyes, "Well I'm sorry to disappoint you but I don't need a personal assistant. I can handle myself without any help from anyone."
Yuze scrunched her face, "What are you, a psychopath? I mean look at your desk, you've got tons of papers in here, and you still don't want it? And I saw that you were about to go to sleep—"
"I did not."
"Yes, you did!"
Lin crossed her arms, "Okay, fine. Yes, I did. What's your point?"
"My point is..." Yuze stood up and walked behind Lin and put her hands on the earthbender's shoulder, "— you are sleeping 'cause you are tired. You need a personal assistant so that you can have a rest. I know jobs like yours were very exhausting 'cause I experience that, though I do have a secretary," she spun Lin's chair to face her, "But you without an assistant, I could imagine how tiredly you get," then she spun again the earthbender's chair to face the desk. She put her head next to the older woman's, "So imagine, if you did have a personal assistant, these papers?" she held her hand towards the piles of paper at the top of the desk, "Will decreased. Then you're work will get easier. You'll got free time after that happened. You can have some tea time. You can now have sleep. You can now have some time to relax," then she swiped her hand as if there's an imaginary picture, "It's a paradise."
Lin's eyebrow twitched as she pushed the younger woman away, "Just like what I said, I don't need an assistant or anything. So get out now. I still have work to do."
"Oh, come on, Beifong!" Yuze groaned throwing her hands back, "Don't you get it? If you hire me as your personal assis— WOAH!"
Lin bends the floor where the firebender is standing to move her out of the open door of her office, "Goodbye."
"Wait! Beifong!"
Lin flicked her finger and the door closed with a click. She rolls her eyes when the young woman doesn't give up easily and pounds to her door. The earthbender stamped her feet and she smirked when she heard an oof from the other side of the wall.
"Just go, Yuze. If you don't want me to bend you towards the island." Lin stated as she picked up a pen and began signing once again.
"Okay, fine! But I will return tomorrow to convince you once again! Soon you will hire me as your personal assistant, remember— STOP IT, BEIFONG!"
Lin snickered as she continued stamping her foot on the floor, "Just go! And never come back!"
"REMEMBER THIS BEIFONG, I WILL RETURN!" Then Lin heard footsteps getting away from her office.
When she no longer could hear it, she retracted the sole of her boot and stamped her feet to check if the young woman was already out of the building. When she was sure the woman already was, Lin shook her head. She picked up another report paper and signed it.
"Stubborn woman."
