Korra lifted the towel from the bowl and twisted it to take the excess water. She put it to Yuze's forehead who squirmed for a moment before her body relaxed once again. The Avatar's eyes looked at her Firebending Master, her eyes reflecting concern.
"It's been two days but she is still not getting well. Her temperature hasn't decreased since that night," the teenager looked up at the airbender standing beside her, "Tenzin, it never happened before. I don't know what is wrong with her."
Tenzin's eyes were only on the younger woman lying in the bed. His brows furrowed, "We will go to the South Pole tomorrow."
Lin looks down at the freshly brewed tea that her subordinate gave her. It has been a long day for her in the office. So much work to do, many papers to sign, fixing the mistakes her officers made, and many more. Add to that, she forgot to have lunch making her more grumpy and cranky.
The Chief of Police sighed as she knew the reason why she forgot to eat lunch.
Yuze didn't come to give her a packed lunch and forced her to eat which she would do because the younger woman would only annoy her until she complied.
Lin shook her head. There's no need to think about that annoying firebender. She should be thankful as she can finally have peace while doing her job.
The Chief continued where she left off when she took a little break. While her eyes were scanning the words written in the document, her hand reached for the teacup and took a sip.
Her nose scrunched as she reached for the trash can beside her desk and deposited what she drank.
Lin's brows met as she stood up and went to her door. Everyone stopped what they were doing as they heard the door of their superior's office open with a bang.
All of the officers prepared for the reprimand that was coming and were praying for the soul of the one who angered their Chief.
"Who made this tea?"
Everyone blinked at the Chief's question. They... didn't expect that.
"I repeat. Who made this tea."
Everyone looked at each other.
"Woiii answer the Chief!"
"Chief asked who made the tea!"
"Say your name whoever unfortunate soul you are!"
"Confessed right now if you don't want to see the afterlife early!"
Lin's eyebrow ticked as her subordinates started their antics. She was about to yell to quit them when someone opened their mouth.
"I did, Chief!"
Lin's sharp emerald eyes went to the young fresh grad officer. The rookie visibly gulped at his superior's gaze.
"Young man."
The young officer straightened up, "Yes, Chief."
"Why does this tea taste like this?"
The young man looked at Lin with confusion, "Chief?"
Even everyone was confused by the Chief's question as the rookie was the greatest tea maker in the room. That's why he's the one who they always told him to make their tea.
"Umm, excuse me, Chief?" one of her officers but in, "But Rui makes the greatest tea in this building, heck perhaps in the whole world."
The Chief of Police raised a brow, "Really? Taste it then and say that this is what the greatest tea tastes like."
"I volunteer as a tribute, Chief!" one of her officers raised his hand, "I will not let this pass to taste the kid's tea."
The tea was snatched from her hand and the officer took a sip. The officer, Chao's eyes widened as the flavor touched his tongue. He looked at his junior and pointed his finger at him accusingly, "You brat! I know Chief is our boss but it's not right for her tea to be tastier than the rest of us. Equality is the trend right now, kid! Keep up!" then his attention went to his superior, "And Chief, I mean no disrespect but are your taste bud okay? I mean it tastes like the nectar of the gods!"
Lin crossed her arms and snorted, "Really you are questioning me? Me, who have tasted the tea brewed by the greatest tea makers," she cocked her hip and waved her hand, "And please, if you want to taste the tea that seems like the nectar of gods you should try Zuko, Izumi, or Yu—", she paused for a moment when she caught herself nearly mentioning that annoying woman's name, "Anyways, like what I said you have not tasted what tea is supposed to be."
Lin shook her head, "Why am I even making a debate about tea?"
"We don't know, Chief," answered one of her officers.
The Chief's eyes went to the officer and glared. The officer raised his hand as a sign of surrender.
"Well, he's not wrong."
Lin's eyes went to the side and she squinted at the man sitting at the desk munching chips.
Lieutenant Jin raised the bag of chips in her direction, "Want some,Chief Beifong?"
"Are you mocking me with that tone,Lieutenant Jin?'
The Lieutenant just shrugged his shoulder but his eyes were glistening with mischief and the corner of his lips were slightly curled up.
Lin's teeth gritted and her face reddened when she heard the side comments of her officers.
"They were getting on it again."
"Oh gosh, the tension girl."
"Are you sure they didn't have a thing?"
"Oh, I'm not sure but I know they have a thing."
"I know they did it, I just don't know how to prove it."
Lin took a deep breath and shouted "I can hear you all and get back to work!"
Everyone became silent and continued what they were doing. Lin turned around and caught Lieutenant Jin looking at her. The man raised a chip as if he were making a toast and put it in his mouth.
The Chief rolled her eyes and went back inside her office. She slumped down on her swiveling chair. Her hands run down her face while letting out a groan.
"Stupid officers. Stupid Jin. Stupid work."
Lin peered on her desk full of papers between her fingers and groaned once again.
"And stupid, stupid documents," she sighed as she reached the last document she read, "And I was supposed to get throughout my day without a tea? A cup of delicious and calming tea?"
Lin stamped the paper and put it at the finish. She continues her work quietly but internally she blames Yuze for making her miss the tea.
That's what she missed. The tea. Crossed her heart just the tea.
Lin came toward the front desk and reached for the log book when the newly hired receptionist noticed her.
"Coming home early, Chief?" the younger woman asked.
"Yes," the Chief answered curtly without looking up. Once she finished logging out, she picked up her stuff from the reception counter.
"Have a safe trip, Chief," the receptionist stated. Lin nodded her head and exited the building.
She only got five steps outside when a voice spoke behind her, "Uhm... Excuse me, Ma'am?"
Lin turned her head and saw a group of familiar teenagers. She raised an eyebrow, "Oh, you three. What do you want?"
The three looked at each other. Having a silent conversation on who will speak. Lin rolled her eyes and started walking again.
"Wait!"
Lin grunted as she looked again at the three teenagers, "What? If you're going to say something, speak already."
The sole girl in the group stepped forward, "We just want to ask if the woman applying for the position of assistant showed up today?"
The Chief fully faced them, confusion on her face, "Wait. You know, Yuze?"
"Well, sort of," the girl said sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck.
Lin raised her eyebrow asking for her to elaborate. The girl was about to speak when there was suddenly a sound of stomach rumbling. All of them looked at the reddening boy wearing Earth Kingdom clothes.
Then the three of them looked at Lin with their eyes speaking to her. The Chief threw her head back and groaned, "Spirits."
The three teenagers simultaneously brought their bowls to the table with a thud. Then the three of them burped loudly. They looked at each other and laughed but stopped at the sound of the Chief clearing her throat. Their eyes turned to the older woman sitting across them with arms crossed at her chest staring at them as if she was waiting for something.
The girl in the group drank water first before she started speaking once again, "First, we thank you for treating us here."
The three teenagers bowed their heads respectfully but Lin just waved her hand dismissively.
"Secondly, we would like to introduce ourselves. I'm Jiayi," the girl introduced herself bowing.
"I'm Luhan," the boy wearing Earth Kingdom clothes waved while grinning.
"The name is Zhen. Nice meeting you, Chief Beifong," the boy wearing Fire Nation clothes. He stood up and bowed his head.
Lin's eyebrows lifted at this, not expecting the boy's formal introduction but still nodded, "So how did you know Yuze?"
The boy named, Zhen was the one who answered this time, "The orphanage where we are living was shut down, leaving us to sleep on the street," Lin noticed how the boy's hands curled into fists, "To survive, we tried to steal foods but it's not enough for us and sometimes we are not succeeding. So we tried to do something new. We tried to steal money from people and our first victim was Yuze. That's when we first met her."
"We tried to threaten her into giving us her money but she she was just calm. Then she gave us her money without fighting," the girl named Jiayi continued.
"She even left us with advice to show backbone and fix our stance," the boy named Luhan cut in.
"Apparently she sensed our nervousness," Jiayi chuckled as well as the other two.
"Then she said for us to go so we did," Zhen said, "Unfortunately we were ambushed by the triad and that lady came to our rescue."
Luhan leaned forward his eyes sparkling, "Yeah, you know she's so cool. She fought them without using bending. She just likes pow, and then she took out her baton and thenswished. And she even knew how to jab at muscles like the Equalist ways but we know she's not with them."
"Luhan," Jiayi pulled him as apparently in excitement he was already standing up, "Calm down."
The young earthbender blushed, "Sorry."
"After that, we go back to our lives until we saw her once again outside your building. Then without planning we went to her and asked her to teach us to fight."
Lin looked at them in surprise, "She has a student?"
"Uhm, no," Jiayi answered, "Well not yet at least."
"She rejected us," Luhan pouted.
"But we were stubborn and every time she visited you we convinced her to take us under her wings."
Chief hummed at that,"So while she's causing me a headache, someone was causing hers?"
"Then one time while we were following Yuze, our stomachs rumbled. Then she treated us in one of the famous diners here in the city, Hexie," Zhen said.
"And you know what's the shocking thing, she's a friend with the couple owning it. Not just friends, but best friends."
Lin didn't let it show but it caught her attention, "She's friends with the owners of Hexie?"
"Ever since, whenever we follow her to convince her, she treated us not just in Hexie but also in other diners and restaurants," Jiayi said.
"She even treat us in Kwong's Cuisine," Luhan butted in.
Lin's eyes widened at that,"If she can afford to go to that restaurant then why even bother to apply to me as an assistant?"
"Then while eating she will tell about herself to us. The tail of her adventures. How she learned how to chi block to the Kyoshi Warriors—"
"She learned from Kyoshi Warriors?!"
How Firelord Zuko and Firelord Izumi trained her—"
"Zuko and Izumi trained her?!"
"How she met and sparred with your mother. How she and the leader of the Zaofu got themselves arrested in Ba Sing Se—"
Lin choked on there.
"Oh, yes, she also said that the leader of Zaofu was your sister and Master Tenzin and you had a relationship and how you got a love triangle between you, Master Tenzin, and Lieutenant Jin and—"
Luhan's voice slowly faded when he felt a shiver go down his spine. He looked at the older woman sitting across them and saw the murderous expression on Lin's face.
"I will kill that woman when I see her," they heard the Chief mutter under her breath.
The three teenagers gulped but Zhen realized what Lin said, "Do you mean you haven't seen her?"
Lin came again to reality at the question, "Not since yesterday."
"Why?"
The older woman sighed, "I don't know."
"Do you think something happened to her?" Luhan asked concern evident in his voice.
Lin's face softened at the expression of the three, "You three don't have to worry. Though I don't know her that well, I know she's strong, and besides she's living in the Air Temple Island. She has many capable people around her."
The three just nodded at her but she could still sense them worrying, "You know? Why don't you three order a takeout for you to eat tomorrow?"
The three teenagers looked at her in surprise. Their eyes glistened before bowing, "Thank you!"
Lin smiled at them and looked towards the Air Temple Island,"What's happened to you, Yuze?"
"Thank goodness I was just about to send a search party. Are you alright?" Tenzin asked as he grabbed Korra's shoulder but the young woman turned around and put her arms around herself. She shook her head in answer to the airbender's question.
Tenzin looked at Korra in concern as he sensed something had happened to her, "Korra, what happened? Did you find your friend?"
"Yes, but... I was in an Equalist rally," the young Avatar looked at Tenzin's eyes, "I saw Amon."
The Master Airbender's eyes widened, "What?"
"He can take people's bending away..." Korra fully faced him, "For good."
"That's— that's impossible," Tenzin furrowed, "Only the Avatar has ever possessed that ability."
"But I saw him do it," Korra said, trying to convince the nomad.
"I believe you," Tenzin assured. Then he faced his right, deeply thinking, "I don't know how Amon has achieved this power. But this means the revolution is more dangerous than ever. No bender is safe."
"I just fell asleep then, when I woke up Amon was already on the move? Wow, what a great greeting."
The two whirled around when they heard the familiar voice they hadn't heard in three days. And there Yuze was standing with a smile on her face. Her face was still pale and her eyes were drooping.
"Yuze," Korra muttered in disbelief.
Yuze looked at the younger woman and saluted, "Yo, Korra. It seems like you were on an advent—"
The firebender didn't have a chance to finish her sentence when Korra came barreling and tackled her. The two of them nearly fell to the ground fortunately Yuze immediately retained her balance. The Avatar hugged her master tightly.
"Korra?" Yuze asked when she felt the younger woman's frame quivering.
"You have us worried. I thought— I thought—" Korra sobbed to Yuze's shoulder.
Yuze's face softened and looked at Tenzin who was also looking at her, "Yes, you had us worried, Yuze. We don't know what's happening to you. We were about to take you to my mother."
Yuze patted Korra's back, "Well, you don't have to worry. I'm fine and awake now."
But her body betrayed her when she winced and her body stiffened. Korra pulled back from her and looked at Yuze in concern as well as Tenzin.
"Clearly you are still not well," Tenzin commented, "You're still recovering you still need to rest," Yuze opened her mouth, "No but."
Yuze sighed and just nodded. Tenzin and Korra went to each side and put her arms around their shoulders.
"So while we are on our way why don't you two tell me what happened while I'm out of the world?"
"Good morning, Chief."
"Good day, Chief Beifong."
"Morning, Chief.'
Lin nodded her head in response to the greetings of her officers on her way to her office. She opened her door and stopped when she saw who was inside.
"Yo, Beifong! Miss me?" Yuze smirked waving her hand while leaning on her desk.
Lin immediately covered her surprise and something in her had been lifted. She didn't know why but she felt relieved seeing Yuze.
Lin continued her way to her desk, "What are you doing here, Yuze? You know the past days are the most peaceful days of my life."
The younger woman put her hand on her chest, "Ouch, Chief, you wound me," she straightened herself and turned to face the older woman who was now sitting on her chair, "How could you do this? I even made you tea."
The earthbender's eyes went to the freshly brewed tea in her mini pantry at the corner of the room and didn't let show her excitement to taste it, "And?"
The firebender sighed dramatically, "And here I am thinking you missed me. Anyways, I'm here to as usual to say—"
Lin picked up a folder and opened it, "Be here tomorrow at 7 sharp. Don't be late. Wear a semi-formal, that will be your uniform. Your schedule will be from 7 am to 5 pm. We will talk about the other condition and the contract tomorrow."
Yuze stopped talking and looked at Lin. She was silent for a moment while Lin just continued scanning the report in her hand when suddenly a loud cheer came from the firebender. The older woman hid her smile behind the folder.
"Oh, gosh! Really?! Beifong?"
Lin wiped her smile and lowered the folder, "Yes."
"Oh, gosh. Thank you—"
"You're so loud. Get out."
"..so muAHHHHHHHHH!"
Lin stood up and went to retrieve the tea. And heard Yuze screamed.
"I THOUGHT WE WERE COOL!"
On the way to her desk with the tea in her hand she looked down at the hole she created. Lin saw the younger woman glaring up to her. She smirked, "That's my payback for gossiping about my personal lives with three teenagers."
Then she closed the hole. Lin went to her desk and sat down on her chair as she sipped the tea.
"I miss this."
Yuze was grumbling as she stood up and brushed the dust on her butt. She walked towards the exit and on her way she saw the three teenagers waiting for her.
"Yuze—"
"Meet me tomorrow at 6 pm in front of Hexie," Yuze looked at them at the side of her eyes, "Prepare yourselves, I'm not an easy teacher."
With that, Yuze continue walked leaving the three mouth gaping teenagers.
