"... and lastly, this is the room where some of the officers are staying and where the Chief's office will be found."
Yuze nodded to the officer Lin had assigned to tour her around the building. The officer's name is Lihua, a beautiful woman in her early fifties. Though her face looked innocent, Yuze knew that the older woman was a tough one. Lihua also said she was from Ba Sing Se and decided to move to Republic City and decided to pursue her dream of being an officer.
Lihua clapped her hands three times to get all her colleagues' attention which all of them gave.
"Everyone, this is Yuze, Chief's new assistant," Lihua introduced the new member of the building.
Yuze bowed her head, "Nice to meet you. I hope I get along with you all."
One of the officers, who is in his early forties stood up and looked at her, "Chief, has an assistant? Since when?"
"Since... now?" Lihua deadpanned as she rolled her eyes.
The man looked at Lihua and pouted, "Oh, don't be like that love."
The officer scrunched her nose. Her eyes glared at the man, "Stop calling me love, Chao. You're gross."
The man named, Chao, clutched his chest, "Love don't be like that."
Lihua rolled her eyes and turned to the younger woman. She smiled warmly at her, "I'm sorry, Yuze, though I still want to stay and chat with you, I have something else to do. Nice meeting you, I hope you enjoy working here."
Yuze nodded with a smile on her face. Once the older woman left the room she faced the officers once again. The man named, Chao, walked towards him and stretched his hand.
"Welcome to the Republic City Police Headquarters, I'm Chao," the man introducing himself.
Yuze shook his hand and nodded, smiling warmly, "Yuze."
Another man, a few years older than her, also went to her and stretched her hand, "Hello, I'm Rui. Nice meeting you."
Yuze shook his hand when suddenly Chao let out a teasingly sound. Rui and Yuze looked at him who was looking at them mischievously, his brows were wiggling up and down.
Rui's faced poker, "I don't swing that way, Chao."
Chao stopped and let out a dismayed sound, "Every time."
A laugh erupted somewhere and everyone looked at the woman walking towards them. The woman was looked like somewhere in her mid-thirties, "Give up being a matchmaker, old man, you're suck in it."
Chao fumed at what the woman called him, "Who you are calling, old man? Mind you I once went to a store and they thought I'm in my late twenties!"
"Yes, yes," the woman waved her hand dismissively. Then she lends her hand to Yuze, "The name is Yahui. Welcome to RCDP."
Yuze reached her own hand, "Nice to meet you, Yahui."
"Hey, assistant girl can you clean my table!"
The three officers' smiles disappeared at the familiar voice. While Yuze stretched her neck to look at whoever spoke. She saw a man who seemed in his mid-forties sitting on a chair while his feet were resting on the desk in front of him, his hands were behind his head. The newly hired assistant looked at him for a moment before she decided to ignore him.
"You guys want to go to Hexie later?"
The three officers looked at each other.
"My treat."
"Of course!" the three immediately said but they jumped at the sound of the table being slammed by a hand.
"Are you ignoring me? Are you deaf? I said cleaned my desk!"
The three officers faced the officer with a frown on their faces. Chao stepped forward, "Stop ordering her, Chang."
"What? It's her job. She's an assistant," Chang arrogantly said the corner of his mouth curling up.
"I've had enough of your attitude, Chang—" Chao was about to dash toward the man when a hand stopped him. He looked at the owner of the hand and saw Yuze shook her head.
Then the firebender turned her eyes to the man, "Chang, right?" the man raised an eyebrow. Yuze smiled sweetly, "I'm sorry but I can't do that. Well, I can but you need to pay me first cause last time I checked I only worked for the Chief and she's the only one who will give me my salary. So..." she put her hand to her waist while the other hand was reaching out, "Do you have money, huh?"
The newly hired assistant looked at him smugly. Chang stood up, slamming his hand once again to his desk, "Who do you think you are? You're just an assistant."
"Assistant?" Yuze laughed humorlessly. Then her eyes went to his uniform and smirked when she saw its color, "Why don't we settle it in another way and show you that I'm not just an assistant?"
Chang's brows furrowed in confusion, "What do you mean?"
Yuze grinned as she looked straight into the man's eyes, "Agni Kai."
"Do we have a new lead towards the Shadow Pang?" Lin asked everyone around the table.
"Yes, Chief," Lihua said, "The member we had caught said something."
"Did they say the leader's name of the triad?"
Lihua shook her head, "Unfortunately, no. He never met the leader of Shadow Pang. He said no one had ever met the leader. The only one they see is the right-hand man and the third in command. He also talked about the ranking of the triad. They have a leader which they call the Director, the right-hand man, who they call the Assistant Director, and the third in command and the one who will always do the transactions, the Lieutenant."
Lin nodded at the new information, "Did they name the Assistant Director and the Lieutenant?"
This time Saikhan was the one who answered, "They don't know the name of the Assistant Director as he never once introduced his name to them but he knew the name of the Lieutenant."
"What is his name—"
Lin's sentence was interrupted when the door in the conference room slammed opened and a panting officer leaned in he door frame. The Chief of Police glared at the officer from the interruption.
"What do you think you are doing? Don't you know we are having an important meeting here?" Lin barked angrily.
"Sorry, Chief, but we have a situation and you are the only one who can stop it."
Lin stood up and looked at his officer now with seriousness, "What is it?"
"It's your new assistant and Chang," the officer straightened himself once he regained his breathing.
Lin's fingers went to the bridge of her nose and massaged it, "I should see this coming," she waved her hand dismissively, "Can't you stop them or anything yourselves."
"That's the case, Chief," the officer squirmed as he knew his next words would greatly anger his boss, "We can't stop an Agni Kai."
Lin head snapped up as well as the other people inside the room.
"What?!"
Chang smirked as he watched the assistant stretch and warm up from the other end of the platform, "Ready to be roasted, Assistant?"
Yuze continued her stretching, "That's my line, buffoon."
Chang's eye twitched in annoyance at the insult, "I'll enjoy wiping this floor with your body."
The practice room under the headquarters where slowly being filled up by the officers who had heard the news about the showdown between the new assistant of the Chief and the most hated but feared officer in the building.
"Who do you think will win?" asked one of the officers to the other one.
"I don't know. I never saw how the new assistant fought but I doubt she will win, I already saw how Chang fought and he is a beast."
"I don't know who will I root for."
"Same. The two of them seem arrogant. The woman looking for a fight on her first day while Chang... well he is Chang."
"I don't think the woman is arrogant. She seems just confident."
"What the two of you do you think you are doing?"
Everyone quieted down at the booming voice of the newcomer. Everyone turned their head towards the entrance and saw their Chief standing by the door. Her face was red in anger, her eyes were hard, and her body expelling a murderous aura.
Chang looked at his boss and smirked, "Oh, look at that mommy came to your rescue, girly."
Lin glared at her officer. For the five years, the man worked for her, she always had a problem with him. The truth about it is the man only got hired as he is the son of one of their sponsor. Though he got in with string, Lin will not deny that the man is good at his job when in comes to arresting and investigation. The only real problems for him are his attitude and manner. Lin always heard complaints about him bullying her other officers and the sexual remarks to the ladies, she too experienced it herself even though she is his boss.
Lin seethed at Chang's remarks. If she only could, she'd be the one who would put this man six feet to the ground. But her hand is tied. But... she looked at her newly hired assistant who winked at her.
The Chief of Police turned her gaze and walked calmly, "I'm not worried about my assistant, Officer Chang. I'm worried about you."
Chang laughed loudly, "Oh, you have nothing to worry about, sweetheart. This twig will not win over me."
Yuze cracked her neck, "Hey, asshole, how about a bet?"
Chang turned to face his opponent with an arrogant smirk forming on his face, "Sure! If I win you will be my personal slave and Beifong will go out with me."
Someone choked at the last condition of Chang. Chao frowned, "Chang, you can't just get Chief—"
"Fine," Lin bent a portion of the earth to become a chair and sat down. Though the platform was five feet taller than them, Lin managed to look at Chang as if she was the one on the higher ground and not the other way around.
Everyone looked at their boss in shock. Their eyes were wide and mouths agape. Yuze took a deep breath, "Fine by me too," then she looked straight into Chang's eyes, "But when I win you will quit being an officer. You will never attempt to be part of any government position. And you will bow down to me and proclaim that I'm not just an assistant."
Chang cracked his neck and rolled his shoulder, "Fine," then he looked down to the Chief of Police, "I want you to wear a red fitted gown with a long slit on our date."
Lin laughed as she propped her elbows on the armrest and put her cheek on her hand, "I'm afraid that will never happen my dear. After all, your opponent was the student of Firelord Zuko and Firelord Izumi and the Avatar's Firebending Master."
Everyone was shocked at what their Chief revealed, even Chang. Chang turned to his opponent and his eyes widened when he saw blue fire erupt from Yuze's hands. A chill went down his spine when the younger woman smirked evilly.
"Time to get roasted."
"What is this I heard about you having an Agni Kai on your first day in the headquarters?" Tenzin asked Yuze, disapproving evident in his voice.
"Wait, you did what?" Meelo asked the older woman.
"Did you win?" Ikki asked her eyes twinkling.
Yuze shrugged, "Well he had it coming," then she patted Ikki's head, "And of course I win. Who do you think I am?"
The three children clapped and cheered while Yuze bowed down as if a performer bowing to the audience. Tenzin massaged the bridge of his nose, "And I can't believe Lin didn't stop it."
"I can't blame her."
"You can chat later," Pema said as she brought down the last dish and sat down at her husband's left, "Let's eat first."
All of them closed their eyes as Tenzin led the prayer.
"I'm not interrupting, am I?"
Everyone opened their eyes to see who spoke. Yuze grunted as she saw Tarrlok.
"This is my home, Tarrlok," Tenzin stood up, "We're about to eat dinner."
The Northern Water Tribe representative fully entered the room, "Good cause I'm absolutely famished," Tenzin's eyes narrowed. Tarrlok smirked, "Airbenders never turned away a hungry guest, am I right?"
Tenzin watched as Tarrlok went to the end of the table. He sighed, "I suppose." he sat back and when he saw his wife frowning at him, he shrugged.
"Oh, you must be thefamous Avatar Korra? It is truly an honor. I'm Councilman Tarrlok, representative from the Northern Water Tribe," Tarrlok introduced.
Korra stood up. "Nice to meet you." she bowed down, so Tarrlok was. And both of them sat down.
"Why do you have three ponytails?" Ikki asked curiously then she sniffed. "And how can you smell like a lady? You're weird."
"Hmmm, are your nose functioning alright, Ikki?" Yuze asked and everyone looked at her. "Or it's my nose that has something wrong? Cause I'm certainly I smell something fishy." Yuze said and side-glanced at the Councilman as she took a sip of her tea.
Tarrlok glanced at Yuze for a moment before looking back to Ikki. "Well, aren't you... precautious?" Tarrlok then looked to Yuze. "And you are...?"
"Oh," Yuze exclaimed. "I'm just nobody." Yuze smiled.
Tarrlok squinted his eyes as if remembering who she was, "Oh, I know who you are, you're Chief Beifong's new assistant. The one who challenged an officer to Agni Kai on her first day."
Yuze gasped dramatically, "Oh my gosh," then she looked at Tenzin, "Tenzin, I think my heart will burst in joy. The councilman knows me."
Tarrlok paused momentarily and chose to ignore the woman before looking at Korra. "So... I've been reading all about your adventures on the papers. Infiltrating Amon's rally, oh that's took real initiative." Tarrlok stated and pointed to Korra.
"Oh, thanks. I— I think you're the first authority figure in the city who's happy I'm here," Korra said looking at the table.
"Republic City is much better off now that you've arrived," Tarrlok said. Yuze furrowed and raised an eyebrow.
"Enough with the flattery, Tarrlok," Tenzin interfered. "What do you want from Korra?"
"Patience, Tenzin, I'm getting to that," Tanzin smirked. Tenzin frowned and narrowed his eyes. "As you may heard, I'm assembling a task force that will strike at the heart of the revolution—"
"I have a guess you want her to join you," Yuze butt in, shoving rice into her mouth.
Tarrlok arched an eyebrow. "Ahhh... Yes."
"Really?" Korra asked.
"What?" Tenzin exclaimed.
"I need someone who will help me attack Amon directly. Someone who is fearless in the face of danger, and that someone is you," Tarrlok pointed to Korra. Yuze raised an eyebrow and took a sip of her tea, calmly. Waiting for Korra's answer.
"Join your task force?" Korra asked. "I can't."
Tarrlok and Tenzin were shocked at her answer while Yuze glanced at Korra.
"I must admit, I'm rather surprised, I- I thought you'd jump at the chance to help me lead the charge against Amon," Tarrlok said.
"Me too," Tenzin stated.
"I came to Republic City to finish my Avatar training with Tenzin. Right now I just need to focus on that," Korra said. Yuze looked at her as she felt something was off on her.
"Which is why this opportunity is perfect. You will get on-the-job experience while performing your Avatar duty for the city," Tarrlok said.
Tenzin intervened. "Korra gave you her answer... It's time for you to go."
Tarrlok stared at him for a moment. "Very well, but I'm not giving up on you just yet. You'll be hearing from me soon—"
"Just go. I want to eat in peace," Yuze gestured a shoo hand. Tarrlok narrowed his eyes at her for a moment before looking at Korra again.
"It has been a pleasure, Avatar Korra," Tarrlok bowed and headed out.
"Bye-bye ponytail man!" Ikki stated as she waved her hand.
Yuze used her bending and sensed how Korra's heart beat erratically. She put a hand on her shoulder, "Are you alright, Korra?"
Korra smiled and nodded before going back to her food. Yuze was not convinced but let it pass.
Sorry for robbing you of the fight but in the coming chapters there will be some action. ;)
