Lin slumped down in her chair, spinning it at the process to face her office's window. Her hands slid down her face as she felt the stress taking a toll on her body. She just got back from the raid they did on the Cabbage Corp. However, there was something in her telling her that they overlooked something and caught the wrong guy and her gut instinct was always right that's why she would look deeper into it.
Then she faced her desk again and groaned when she saw the pile of documents waiting for her to be checked and signed. As all of her attention was focused on Amon and the Equalists, the other cases had been cast aside.
Fuck them, making her job harder than it is.
And she doesn't have someone who will help her to manage these reports as her assistant is currently on leave. Again. Seriously, why does trouble always follow that kid?
Speaking of Yuze. Lin sighed as she fiddled with the locket on her neck. It's been three days since she saw her and though Tenzin was updating her about her daughter's condition, her heart still can't put at ease.
Daughter.
The Toph's daughter smiles as she calls Yuze not assistant, not Avatar's master, but daughter. It still feels strange to call Yuze her daughter but at the same time, it feels so right. She wondered if Yuze would also feel the same way as her.
Lin's smile faltered. She doesn't know how she will tell Yuze thatsheis her daughter. That she ishermother. Thather bloodwas coursing through her veins. That she is aBeifong.
Then she imagines what will be her daughter's reaction. Will she be angry that she didn't try so hard to find her, to get her back? Will she be upset that she is the daughter of Lin Beifong? Will she resent her for all the things she'd done while serving as the Chief of Police, that she hadn't kept her job from affecting her personal life? That she was taken from her as a consequence of doing her duty to the Republic City?
So many thoughts, so many questions. So many emotions coming through her, boggling her mind that she is starting to feel a migraine beginning to form in her head.
Then there was a knock on her office door, "Lin, it's Tenzin and I'm with Mr. Sato."
Lin breathed in relief. Perfect timing to keep her mind busy even just for a while, "Come in!"
Korra was leaning at the pillar waiting for her turn to be interviewed by the Chief of the Police and the Councilman. When someone called her name, she turned and saw a familiar face sitting on the waiting bench.
"Thano?" Korra asked in surprise. Once she had recovered she moved to sit down in the free space beside the man, "Listen, I know we're not exactly best friends," she glanced at the former Pro-bender, "But I'm sorry Amon take your bending."
Thano shook his head, "I've been at the best healers in the City," he looked at the Avatar, "Whatever Amon did to me? It's permanent."
"Is it?"
The two waterbenders whipped their heads and saw the Chief's assistant standing beside Thano, her hands in her coat's pocket, a shade covering her eyes.
"Yuze?" Korra asked then her face morphed into a scowl, "What are you doing here? You were supposed to be staying at the island."
The older woman waved her hand dismissively, "I'm fine," then she looked down at the younger man.
"What do you mean?" the former bender asked then his eyes gleamed with hope, "Do you— do you think there's a way for my bending to be restored?" he looked down to his hands before he returned his eyes to the woman, "But how?"
"Don't keep your hopes up," Yuze turned her gaze ahead, "It's just a theory. I believe there is only one who could— Wha— ugh!"
"Yeah, you're absolutely fine," Korra deadpanned a hand on her waist while the other one was holding Yuze's shade which she took to the older woman while she was talking to the other waterbender.
Yuze groaned at the brightness of the surroundings. She closed her eyes to block the light while her hand was attempting to find the younger woman's hand holding her shades, "Korra, give that back to—"
Yuze didn't have a chance to finish her sentence when nausea suddenly hit her. She opened her eyes and darted on her surroundings, ignoring the blinding light. She saw a trashcan near them and she kneeled in front of it and deposited her breakfast.
"See, that's what I'm talking about!" Korra exclaimed, exasperation hinting at her tone, "You still have a concussion!"
Yuze lifted her head to glare at the younger woman but she groaned and once again bowed down to the trash can. Korra rolled her eyes and then turned to her left when she heard voices getting closer.
"Mr. Sato, if you ever remember anything else about what you saw during Amon's attack, be sure to let us know."
"I'm happy to help anywhere I can—" Mr. Sato was cut at the sound of retching. The three find where it coming from and see a familiar woman in a red coat kneeling by the trash can. Tenzin's blood began to rise. Lin was frowning, hiding the concern she had at the younger woman. While Mr. Sato's nose was scrunched. The businessman shook his head, "Anyways, I want these Equalists to pay for what they have done."
After that, the CEO of Future Industries left not without glancing toward the woman in the red coat with judging eyes.
"Aren't you supposed to be in Air Temple Island," Lin asked, her concern is concealed by a stern look. She could see the paleness of her daughter's face.
Tenzin closed his eyes to calm himself. He inhaled through his nose, then he held it for four seconds before exhaling. Inhaled. Hold. Exhaled. Inhaled. Hold. Exhaled. Inhaled—
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, YUZE!?" Tenzin bellowed, a gust of wind hitting everyone's face, "HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU—" the airbender's mouth stopped mid-sentence when he realized he attracted the attention of many. He cleared his throat as he fixed his robe. Before he once again berated the firebender but in a much toned-down voice, "How many times do I have to tell you not to get out of the island? The doctor ordered you to rest as you have a mild nearing severe concussion from your head being busted two consecutive times!Do you even know what the word rest is?"
Yuze felt the nausea lessen as she brought her handkerchief out to wipe her mouth. She stood up but she swayed on her feet, "Na-ah," she raised her hand to stop Korra from attempting to assist her, "I can manage—" her body swung again before she managed to find the center of her gravity. Yuze let out a grin, "See! I told you I can manage it!"
"Yeah, we could see that," Tenzin deadpanned, "We watched you sway for a minute."
Yuze ignored the airbender's words, "Like what I said I can manage. I just need—" she snatched back her shade from her former student and wore it, "... this and all is fine! Besides," she took out a small bottle of menthol candies and popped it to her mouth, "I was bored out of my mind, I need to get out of that island before I go insane!"
Tenzin shook his head as he massaged the bridge of his nose, "What I am going to you, Yuze? Why are you so stubborn?"
Lin's wince went unnoticed by many,'That may be my fault.'
The Chief of Police stepped up, "Yuze, you should listen to Tenzin. I could see you're not in the right shape."
Everyone, even the sulking water bender, looked at the Chief of Police weirdly. That's when she realized she spoke with such gentleness, which absolutely hadn't happened before.
"Okay," Yuze said, stretching the words, "Strange but welcomed," she shook her head, "Just let me stay here. Promise I will not meddle with your work."
Tenzin was about to open her mouth when Lin got ahead of him, "No, Yuze, go home."
"But I don't want to go home," Yuze whined.
"Chief," Lieutenant Jin appeared and stepped closer to whisper something to her.
Lin nodded, "Let them know I'll check on it after we interview the kid," she then glanced at the former Pro-bender, "Mr. Thano, come with us."
Thano looked at Korra, his eyes burning, "Korra, you gotta get him for me," then he stood up and saluted his former opponent, "See you around, Avatar."
Tenzin, Lin, and Thano started to walk with Lieutenant Jin following behind them when the Chief of Police looked at the firebender over her shoulder. Then spoke with a stern voice, "And Yuze I'll know if you don't go home," she looked ahead and started walking again, "I'm the Chief of Police, I have eyes everywhere."
Yuze watched their backs while pouting, "'I'm the Chief of Police, I have eyes everywhere'," she mimicked while slowly turning her body then paused in Korra's direction who was staring at her with an eyebrow raised, a smirked gracing her face.
"You shouldn't challenge a Beifong, Yuze," the Avatar said as if she was giving a piece of advice.
The firebender stuck her nose up and spun around, flipping her coat theatrically.
"So you are the ones Beifong said her eyes everywhere?" Yuze deadpanned as she looked at the people across her.
Chao stretched his hand upwards before he rested it behind his head, "Why? What do you expect?"
"Nothing," Yuze glanced them up and down, "I'm just expecting... different."
"Woi, I know those eyes, kid," Chao's eyes narrowed, "Are you belittling us?"
Yuze shook her head in time with her hands, "Oh, no. Nothing like that," then she tilted her head, "And why would Beifong send three people just to babysit me?"
"Checking on you, not babysitting you," Yahui corrected as she flipped the page from the book she currently reading.
"Potato, potato."
Yahui peered over her book and saw Yuze raising an eyebrow. She rolled he eyes and went back reading the book.
"It's because Chief knew you are stubborn like a mule and a trouble magnet," Rui who had just gotten back from the washroom answered. He sat down at the chair from one the sides of the table, "It will take three or more people just to keep you away from more trouble."
Yuze crossed her arms and pouted, "I can handle myself."
"We know, you can handle yourself, kid," Chao met the younger woman's eyes, "But not anything you can handle alone."
The firebender felt those words pierce through her soul. She looked away and looked outside the window.
"Here you go, Ma'am and Sirs!" Luhan announced as he transferred their orders to the table. Then he took out a medium-sized bowl from the cart and lowered it in front of his teacher, "And the Hexie specialty for you, Shifu."
Yuze glanced at her student and smiled gratefully. Once the boy left to deliver the other customer's order, she took a pair of chopsticks from the container at the center of the table. She says her prayer and splits her chopstick into two. She was about to dig in when she saw the three staring at her, "What?"
"Hexie has a specialty?" Yahui asked.
Yuze raised an eyebrow at the question, nonetheless, she answered, "Yes."
Rui's brows met in confusion, "But I didn't see it on the menu."
Yuze let out a smirk, "It's only for VIP's," then she took a bite at the tempura, "And that VIP is me alone."
"Dang," Choi exclaimed as he started digging into his fried rice, "Being great friends with a diner's owner really does have its benefits," he shook his head. Then he gestured to his other companions to start eating, "Quick, and after we're done eating we're going to take you to the Air Temple Island."
The Chief's assistant tilted her head, looking at them innocently, "What do you mean?"
Yahui dipped the dumpling in a sauce, "Oh, don't pull that to us. Chief ordered us to take you home."
"But I am home," Yuze stated, "Hexie is my second home."
Rui shook his head, "No, Chief meant for home is the Air Temple Is—"
"Is it?" Yuze hummed, "Did she specify it has to be Air Temple Island?"
Rui's mouth opened then closed before he sighed, "No."
"Exactly!" Yuze exclaimed, "Then I'm staying at my secondhome."
"Dang, girl," Chao looked at her, impressed, "Where did you get your wit?"
Yuze shrugged as she took another bite of tempura then she observed the trio. Her eyes gazed at their clothes. Chao, blue uniform. Rui, red uniform. Yahui, metal armor.
Then her eyes darted to the corner of the room where her students were, then an idea suddenly came to her mind.
The three officers looked up as they caught Yuze leaning closer to them. Their eyebrows raised as they saw the excitement gleaming at the Chief's assistant.
"Say, are you guys free tomorrow morning?"
"Raiding the Sato's mansion is a risky move with Tarrlok breathing down your neck," Tenzin glanced at the woman standing beside him, "If we're wrong..."
"I know, I can kiss my job goodbye," Lin looked at the airbender, "But protecting Republic City is all I care about," her brows furrowed, her eyes showing conviction, "We can't let Amon get his hands on this new weapon."
"I agree," Tenzin nodded fully knowing what is the consequence if that happened.
Behind them, they heard the Avatar sigh for the nth time. They knew Korra was in a difficult position too. If the accusation was wrong, her friends would be furious at her, it may cause her friendship too.
"Pull yourself together, kid," Lin said without looking at the Avatar.
"I'm trying," Korra said, then sighed once again, "I wish I could share this with Yuze."
"No. It's better this way," Tenzin said.
Lin nodded in agreement. She knew Yuze would insist on being included. And even if they said no, that woman would do anything on her hand just to get what she wanted. A Beifong trully. Lin sighed internally, why couldn't her daughter be like her father? Then she thought about it before she dismissed the idea. On the other hand, it's better this way. That man is an insufferable jerk. Yes, he is handsome, charming, and has a good heart but still a jerk.
"Yes, I know," Korra said, "Yuze is stubborn."
Then Lin had a question on her head.
Why on all of the things her daughter could inherit from her, it's her stubbornness she got?
"Really, Yuze?" Chao asked tilting his head towards the firebender who sitting on the bench not far away from where they were standing, "Them?"
"Hey, don't underestimate your opponent just by their appearance," Yuze scolded the older man, "Hadn't they taught you that in the academy?"
"But Yuze, Chao is right," Rui agreed peering at their opponent, "They are just... kids."
"Nope, don't judge their capabilities just based on their age," Yuze said sternly, "That's the reason why all of the enemies of Team Gaang had fallen. They underestimate them because they thought they could win over a bunch of kids."
"She's right," Yahui said, nodding her head, "Besides, they are being trained by Yuze, who trained Avatar Korra and had been taken under the wings of Lord Zuko and Firelord Izumi. That reason alone should keep your guard up."
Yuze lowered her teacup to the small table beside her. Then she clapped her hands, "Now, you six ready yourselves, in five minutes the spar will start."
The six people, a mix of adults and teenagers, nodded as they started to warm up their bodies. Yuze stretched her arms out and her neck with a groan. Before she turned on the radio to listen to some news or music while watching the spar. It added entertainment to her if she ever got bored in the midst of the fight and it also created extra theatrics while the six were exchanging blows.
Yuze picked up her tea once again and took a sip.
"Breaking news, Chief Beifong has handed her resignation letter at the Republic City Office just this morning—"
Yuze spat out her tea while the other six people were frozen by what they were doing, staring at the radio with wide eyes.
"What!?"
