The Paldea Region stretched across a land of contrasts, its vast expanse divided into four provinces. Three areas marked each province, save for the sprawling South Province, which claimed six. Open spaces dominated the landscape, where tranquil lakes shimmered under the sun, jagged mountains loomed with quiet menace, and endless grasslands swayed in the wind's embrace. Forests offered peace, while nature's beauty unfolded in forms too varied to name. Yet Paldea was more than its wilderness. Towns and cities thrived amidst the untamed lands, each with its own story. Among them, nestled on a windswept cape in the South Province, lay the quiet town of Cabo Poco.

Cabo Poco was a tiny town, barely worth calling a settlement, with just two houses to its name. In one of those houses, a cozy, two-story home with sunny yellow walls and a red-tiled roof, lived a boy named Florian Ohmori. At his desk in the small yet cozy room he shared with his sister, Florian worked on an application form. It was for the prestigious Tiempo Academy. His brown eyes flicked over the form's colorful border, each detail catching his attention: one half glowed bright orange, almost scarlet, while the other shimmered a vivid violet. Where the colors met in the middle, they softened into a vibrant green, something the academy called "viridlet."

The application had been simple so far; name, address, birthday. Easy stuff. But when Florian reached the "preferred subjects" section, he froze. His pen hovered over the page as he stared at the blank space, placing his hand on his chin as he thought. What should he pick? Minutes passed before he finally scrawled "Biology & Battle Studies," though the uncertainty in his choice was obvious. His usually neat handwriting wavered, dipping slightly as if it shared his hesitation.

He set the pen down and exhaled, the kind of sigh that came with equal parts relief and uncertainty. The silence of the room was comforting, broken only by the soft rustle of papers on his desk. Then, a familiar hand rested on his shoulder, warm and steady. Florian didn't need to look up; he'd known that touch his whole life. It was his twin sister, Juliana.

Juliana's hand rested on his shoulder for a moment before she gave it a playful squeeze. "All done?" she asked, her voice brimming with energy, even though the day was winding down. Florian glanced up at her, a sheepish smile tugging at his lips. "I'm... pretty sure," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. Juliana grinned and ruffled his short brown hair, earning a quiet protest as he tried to smooth it into his favorite hairstyle. Before he could say more, their mother's voice called up from the kitchen downstairs. "Dinner's ready!" With a burst of enthusiasm, Juliana bounded toward the stairs but stopped halfway, noticing Florian still rooted in place at his desk. She turned back, one brow raised. "You coming?"

"In a bit," he said, his eyes flicking back to the form. "I just wanna double-check this." His voice was quiet but firm. Juliana smirked, leaning on the banister for a moment. "Of course you do," she teased. With a soft laugh, she turned and headed down the stairs, her footsteps light and quick.

Florian stayed seated for only a moment longer. Then, as if spurred by a second wind, he got up and followed her, his steps growing more eager with each passing second. As he passed through the hallway, his eyes lingered on the empty pet bed tucked into the corner. His pace slowed for just a heartbeat, and a faint shadow of sorrow flickered across his face. But it was gone as quickly as it came. He turned his focus back to his destination, quickening his pace as his expression returned to normal, like a cloud passing to reveal a clear sky.

Florian soon reached the living room, where Juliana was lounging on the couch, watching the TV with a plate of Mamá's homemade quesadillas balanced in her lap. She was mid-bite when she noticed him, but that didn't stop her from offering a cheerful wave. Florian waved back, a small smile tugging at his lips, before heading into the kitchen. Their Mamá was just finishing her own meal when she looked up and saw him. "Oh! Hola, Florian!" she greeted warmly. He murmured a soft "hola" in return, his voice barely above a whisper. Smiling, she pulled him into a gentle hug before handing him his plate of quesadillas, the aroma instantly making his stomach rumble.

"Gracias," Florian said, his tone a touch brighter this time. Mamá's smile widened as he carried his plate into the living room and settled beside Juliana on the couch.

As Florian began eating, Mamá joined them with her plate, choosing the other couch across the room. The three ate in comfortable silence, the soft hum of the TV filling the air as the evening stretched on. Once their plates were empty, the twins gathered them up and took them to the sink, rolling up their sleeves to help their mother clean up.

As she wiped down a plate, Mamá glanced at Florian. "Did you finish filling out the application, mijo?" she asked gently.

"Y-Yeah," Florian replied, his voice wavering slightly. "But... there were a few boxes that my parent or guardian has to fill out." His gaze dropped to the dish in his hands as he scrubbed it, the tension in his posture giving away his nerves. "Ah, I figured that would be the case," Mamá said with a warm smile. "Well, once we're done here, I'll take care of those." Her words seemed to ease him, and he nodded quietly.

Mamá then turned her attention to Juliana, her eyes twinkling with playful curiosity. "And how about you, mija?" she asked. Juliana, who had been focused on scrubbing a bowl, glanced up at her mother. "Not yet," Juliana admitted with a sheepish grin. Mamá let out a soft sigh but quickly shook her head, her smile returning just as bright as before. "Well, there's still time. But don't wait too long, querida." Juliana nodded. "I'll start working on it in the next thirty minutes or so."

About an hour later, Florian and Juliana sat side by side in their shared room, each carefully reviewing their completed applications for Tiempo Academy. The soft rustle of paper filled the quiet space as they checked and rechecked the details, Juliana breezing through it while Florian obsessively went over every line, his eyes scanning the form for what felt like the hundredth time. His fingers tapped nervously against the desk, but with each check, a sense of calm slowly started to replace the anxiety in his chest.

Juliana let out a long, dramatic sigh, stretching her arms above her head as she leaned back in her chair. "Finally," she muttered, clearly relieved. Her application was perfect, and the pressure that had built up throughout the day seemed to melt away. Florian, however, continued his meticulous review, his brow furrowed in concentration. When he was finally satisfied that everything was in order, he carefully folded his application in half, his hands trembling ever so slightly. Juliana did the same, a grin tugging at her lips as she placed hers into the envelope their mother had given them. The two of them exchanged a look, a mix of excitement and uncertainty, as they sealed the envelopes with a soft snap.

Florian stood up, a nervous energy stirring in his chest. "I'm gonna go take these downstairs," he said quietly, his voice almost drowned out by the pounding of his heart. He moved toward the door, but before he left, he glanced at Juliana once more. "Good luck," she said with a wink, her usual teasing replaced by something gentler. Florian nodded, his stomach fluttering, and made his way downstairs.

As he reached the bottom of the stairs, Florian's heart seemed to skip a beat. Their Mamá was standing by the front door, a set of keys in her hand, ready to head out for the night. The envelopes in Florian's hands suddenly felt heavier. He walked toward her, his footsteps slower than usual. "I'll take these to the post office for you," Mamá said, her tone light as she held out her hand. Florian hesitated for just a moment before placing the sealed envelopes in her palm, the weight of the decision sinking in. The futures of both he and his sister were in those envelopes, their hopes, dreams, and the next chapter in their lives.

Florian felt a lump rise in his throat. He wanted to say something, but the words caught, unsure how to express the nervous excitement building inside him. Their mamá smiled gently at him, her presence comforting. "Don't worry, mijo. You've both done your best, and I'm sure you'll get in." Florian nodded, a small, quiet "thank you" slipping past his lips, and watched as his Mamá tucked the envelopes into her bag. With a final glance at his sister, who had arrived downstairs ten seconds ago, he felt a wave of reassurance. The applications were on their way...

Over the next few weeks, as they waited for the letter from Tiempo Academy confirming whether they had been accepted or not, Florian's anxiety seemed to grow with each passing day. The uncertainty weighed heavily on him, and he found himself distracted more often than not, his mind constantly wandering back to the question of whether or not he'd made the cut. Juliana, on the other hand, was still anxious but much more at ease. She handled the waiting with a lighter heart, filling the time in their shared bedroom playing games on their Nintendo Switch.

Most afternoons, Florian would hear the soft click of buttons from the corner of the room where Juliana sat, her laughter and teasing remarks filling the air as she played. She often invited him to join her, knowing that games were one of the few things that could help him relax. While Juliana breezed through the games with her usual energy, Florian found himself enjoying their time together, even if his thoughts remained restless.

The multiplayer sessions became a way for them both to pass the time and enjoy the last few weeks of Summer before everything changed. It wasn't the same as before when they were younger and spent entire afternoons lost in games, but it still gave Florian a small sense of comfort. Every win in the games, no matter how small, felt like a fleeting moment of relief, an escape from the constant buzz of worry.

And then, on the last day of Summer, just as Florian and Juliana were preparing for bed, the familiar sound of their Mamá's phone pinged from the kitchen. It was the sharp notification of an R-Mail, and both twins paused, exchanging a glance. From down the hallway, they heard their Mamá's voice, calm yet filled with a hint of excitement. "A package... from Tiempo Academy," she called, her words hanging in the air for a moment before they fully registered.

Florian's heart seemed to skip a beat, and Juliana immediately straightened up from the bed, her eyes wide with surprise. The letter, no, the package, was finally here. Florian's palms grew clammy as he stood up slowly, his stomach twisting in knots. He had been waiting for this moment for weeks, but now that it was here, he felt a rush of nerves and anticipation. "It's... it's here?" he muttered to no one in particular.

Juliana, already halfway out the door, shot him a grin. "Guess we're not going to bed just yet," she said with a laugh, her voice light, but Florian could hear the excitement beneath it. The twins rushed downstairs, each step louder than the last as they made their way to the kitchen where their mamá was already holding the official-looking package that was a bit bigger than expected. It was sealed with a crisp, gold stamp, bearing the Tiempo Academy logo. The sight of it sent a thrill through Florian's veins.

Mamá smiled at them both, her face a mixture of warmth and quiet anticipation. "Well, looks like what we've been waiting for has arrived," she said softly, holding the package out toward them. Florian wanted to tear it apart the instant he saw it to finally know the answer he'd had the past weeks, but he hesitated. This wasn't just for him, it was also for Juliana. He glanced over at his sister, and she looked just as nervous but a hint of excitement was in her eyes. "D-Do you wanna open it...?" he asked, to which Juliana responded with "N-No... You should open it, you've been more anxious about this, you deserve to know first."

"There's always the possibility of you two opening it together," Mamá suggested while giving off a reassuring smile to her children. The suggestion hung in the air, and it felt as if time itself had slowed down as Florian nodded and looked over at Juliana who also nodded. And so, with a deep breath, each of them took a corner of the package, and they carefully pulled open the seal, and what was truly a few seconds felt like a lifetime.

When those few seconds were up and they had peeled back the seal and opened the package, Florian's heart started to beat incredibly fast while Juliana's heart beat at a slightly slower speed. Inside were two thick envelopes on top of eight neatly folded uniforms. Four were mainly colored that bright, almost scarlet orange like one half of the border for the application letters, while the other four were mainly colored that vivid violet from the other half of the border.

Barely able to contain their excitement, both Julian and Florian grabbed each of the envelopes and tore them open, letting the letters slide into their hands before they started to read in silence.

Florian's hands trembled as he held the letter, his eyes scanning the words over and over. "We got in..." he whispered, his voice tinged with excitement. Then, as the reality sank in, he repeated, louder and clearer this time, "We got in!"

"We did it!" Juliana exclaimed, her excitement bubbling over as she threw her arms around her twin in a tight hug. The sudden gesture startled Florian, and he almost dropped the letter, but he had been expecting it. With a small, sheepish smile, he returned her embrace.

Before he could say another word, their Mamá stepped forward, wrapping her arms around both of them and pulling them into a warm group hug. "Mis hijos," she said, her voice brimming with pride, "I had no doubt you'd get in. You're going to have such an amazing time at Tiempo, I just know it!"

For a moment, the room was filled with nothing but quiet joy, the kind that lingers after an exciting realization. Then, an alarm on Mamá's Rotom Phone suddenly went off, causing all three to jump slightly. Mamá checked the phone, silenced the alarm, and then glanced at the time. Her expression shifted, and she let out a light chuckle. "Oop! Look at the time—it's past your bedtime already!" she said, putting the phone away. "You've got a big day ahead tomorrow, and we don't want you to be too tired for it."

Juliana let out a playful groan. "Already? Can't we stay up just a little longer?" she teased, though she didn't push too hard. Florian, however, simply nodded, his excitement still shining in his eyes. "Alright, Mamá," he said softly. Carefully folding his letter, he headed upstairs, Juliana following after she folded hers as well. As they reached their room, Mamá called out a warm "Goodnight!" from downstairs. The twins returned the sentiment before slipping into their bunk bed, Florian on the bottom bunk and Juliana above, still riding the wave of their incredible news as they tried to sleep.

Several hours later, as Florian and Juliana slept and morning sunlight bathed the Paldea Region in a golden glow, two hikers stood on the rugged edge of the massive Great Crater of Paldea. One, having reached the top, extended a hand to help their companion ascend when a pair of Pokémon cries pierced the tranquil morning air. One was ferocious and filled with rage, while the other carried a note of fear and desperation.

Moments later, a powerful gust of wind rushed past them as a mysterious creature burst through the crater's swirling clouds. It slowed briefly, hovering as if to take in the breathtaking expanse of the Paldea Region below, then darted forward with purpose. The Pokémon soared over vast grasslands, its shadow gliding across herds of Paldean Tauros, muscular, jet-black, bovine creatures running and trampling whatever got in there way. Though the grasslands' other Pokémon were inviting along with the area in general, the creature paid no mind, its focus unwavering as it continued its rapid flight.

The Pokémon's altitude dipped, skimming dangerously close to the ground as it passed over a small town dominated by a towering windmill. The windmill, which typically turned with a gentle rhythm, suddenly spun wildly from the gust of the Pokémon's passage, startling a handful of early risers who caught only a fleeting glimpse of the blur in the sky.

Picking up speed once more, the creature ascended, its trajectory cutting through a flock of Flamigo, the flamingo-like Pokémon scattering in surprise. The view of a sprawling city came into focus, its buildings, painted in earthy tones of brown and tan, sprawled across a winding canal that curved gracefully through the urban expanse. At the city's center, uniquely shaped buildings taller than the rest, their more modern designs contrasting with the natural beauty surrounding them.

The Pokémon's sharp eyes darted to Tiempo Academy perched at the city's closest point to the Great Crater, its iconic silhouette unmistakable. A lighthouse far in the distance caught its attention, and with a sharp turn, the creature bolted toward it. Its altitude dipped again as it raced over the city and pathway to the lighthouse, kicking up gusts of wind that nearly sent a man's hat flying off his head.

As it approached the lighthouse, the creature's movements faltered. Fatigue clouded its vision, and its once-fluid flight grew erratic. It attempted to slow, circling to regain control, but its exhaustion overtook it. Spotting something familiar on the beach below, it began to descend, wings faltering. Before it could land, its body gave out, and drifting into unconsciousness, it crashed, but it didn't crash into its intended target, instead crashing into the water with a loud splash...
