CHAPTER 12: BRAVERY AMIDST CHAOS
Harry and Daphne found themselves seated beside Tracy at the Halloween feast dinner, Draco wisely choosing a spot at the opposite end of the table. Surprisingly, none of the three bothered to complain about the arrangement.
"Harry," Tracy began, leaning in slightly, "would you mind helping me with my homework when we return to the common room?"
Harry considered for a moment, then turned to Tracy with a mischievous grin. "I would, Tracy, but duty calls. Daphne's niece's eldest daughter urgently needs to converse with her incredibly charming boyfriend, and I simply must be there to lend my support."
Tracy blinked, then realization dawned on her. "You utter prat!" She playfully punched Harry on the arm.
Harry chuckled. "Guilty as charged. But fear not, I shall come to your aid with your homework, even though it's due tomorrow. Though, I must say, facing the consequences might build character."
"Thanks," Tracy sighed with a mixture of exasperation and gratitude.
Suddenly, Professor Quirrell burst into the hall, his usual stutter replaced by a frantic urgency. "Troll! In the dungeon! Thought you should know," he blurted before collapsing face-first onto the floor.
Harry exchanged a bewildered glance with Daphne. "What happened to his stutter? And who faints like that?" he muttered.
Before they could ponder further, chaos erupted in the hall. Screams filled the air, particularly piercing among them was the shrill voice of Draco Malfoy, which Harry had mistaken for a girl's.
"Quiet!" Dumbledore's voice boomed over the tumult, commanding immediate attention. "Please, do not panic. Prefects, kindly escort your houses back to their common rooms."
The prefects sprang into action, guiding the students out of the hall in an orderly manner, though tension hung thick in the air.
"Alright, listen up," declared one of the Slytherin prefects, taking charge of the situation. "The headmaster seems to have overlooked the fact that our common room is in the dungeons, so let's make our way to the library instead."
The Slytherins obediently trailed after their prefect, with Daphne holding tightly onto Harry's hand and Tracy clutching onto his sleeve, much to Draco's evident irritation.
"Greengrass," Draco interjected as they walked, his tone oozing with faux concern, "wouldn't you feel safer by my side? I daresay I could protect you far better than Potter."
Daphne shot Draco a withering glare. "Coming from the boy who screamed like a banshee back there. I wouldn't hold your hand for all the gold in Gringotts."
"Can we not do this now, Draco?" Harry interjected wearily. "There's a troll on the loose, and you're still fixated on this?"
Before Draco could respond, a blood-curdling scream pierced the air, causing everyone to freeze in their tracks and turn toward the source of the commotion. To their astonishment, they saw Adrian, Ron, and Hermione hurtling toward them with the troll hot on their heels.
"Idiots!" Tracy exclaimed, her voice laced with panic. "They're leading it straight to us!"
"Forget about me," Harry said firmly, disentangling himself from Daphne's grasp and pulling Tracy by the sleeve. "I need you two to disappear. Now! Go!"
"Harry!" Daphne's eyes widened in alarm. "You're not seriously considering..."
"If you think I'm about to take on that troll," Harry interrupted, his gaze steely, "then you're absolutely right."
"Harry, that's madness!" Daphne protested, her voice tinged with desperation. "It's suicide!"
"Only if I don't make it out alive," Harry replied calmly, taking a deep breath before darting off into action.
Daphne made a move to follow, but Tracy held her back, her expression a mix of fear and determination. "We have to trust him," she urged, her grip on Daphne's arm tight. "He knows what he's doing."
Reluctantly, Daphne nodded, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched Harry shed his robe and sprint toward the oncoming danger. With a burst of agility and courage, Harry veered toward the wall, leaping into the air and propelling himself over the heads of the trio and the oncoming troll with remarkable finesse.
The Slytherins, led by a quick-thinking prefect, diverted their path toward the library, considering their dormitories were in the dungeons. Daphne held tightly onto Harry's hand, while Tracy clung to his sleeve, much to Draco's evident irritation.
"Greengrass," Draco interjected as they walked, his tone dripping with arrogance, "surely you'd feel safer by my side. I'd offer far better protection than Potter here."
Daphne shot Draco a withering look. "Says the one who shrieked like a banshee. I wouldn't hold your hand for all the Galleons in Gringotts."
"Draco, can we not do this now?" Harry interjected wearily. "There's a troll on the loose, and you're worried about holding hands?"
Before Draco could retort, a blood-curdling scream pierced the air, drawing everyone's attention. They turned to see Adrian, Ron, and Hermione sprinting toward them, the troll hot on their heels.
"Idiots!" Tracy exclaimed in frustration. "They're leading it straight to us!"
"Forget about me," Harry said, pulling away from Daphne and grabbing Tracy's sleeve. "I need you two to get out of here, now! Go!"
Daphne's eyes widened in alarm. "Harry, you're not seriously considering...?"
"If you think I'm considering taking on that troll, then you're absolutely right," Harry said resolutely.
"Harry, that's madness!" Daphne cried out desperately.
"Only if I don't come out of it alive," Harry replied, then took a deep breath and dashed off.
"Harry!" Daphne struggled against Tracy's grip. "You have to come back!"
Harry discarded his robe and charged straight toward the troll, catching its attention. As the troll raised its club menacingly, Harry brandished his wand and shouted, "Lumos Maxima!"
A blinding burst of light emanated from his wand, causing the troll to flinch and swing its club wildly. Harry swiftly dodged the attack, then unleashed a burst of flames followed by a stunning spell aimed at the troll's back.
Though he knew the spells wouldn't seriously harm the troll, it was enough to provoke and distract it. The troll turned its fury towards Harry, who taunted it, leading it on a chase through the corridors.
"He's completely mad!" Adrian exclaimed in disbelief.
"So, Greengrass," Draco began, his smirk evident, "it appears Potter has decided to play the hero. I highly doubt he'll survive, but fret not, I'm still..." Draco's words were abruptly cut off as Daphne's palm connected with his cheek in a resounding slap.
Stunned by Daphne's unexpected retaliation, Draco stumbled back, his hand flying to his reddening cheek. His expression shifted from smugness to bewilderment as he stared at Daphne, who stood before him with a fierce determination in her eyes.
"Don't you dare speak ill of him," Daphne hissed, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and anger. "Harry may be reckless, but he's risking his life to protect us while you stand here making snide remarks."
Draco's pride bristled at the rebuke, but a flicker of guilt crossed his features. He opened his mouth to retort but found himself at a loss for words under Daphne's unwavering gaze.
Meanwhile, Harry led the troll on a daring chase, weaving through the castle corridors with agility and determination. His heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline coursing through his veins as he lured the creature away from his friends.
"Come on, you lumbering oaf!" Harry shouted, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "I'm right here! Keep up if you can!"
The troll roared in frustration, its heavy footsteps thundering behind Harry as he dashed down the hallways. He glanced over his shoulder, noting the troll's relentless pursuit, and pressed on, his mind racing with thoughts of protecting his friends and buying them time to escape.
Back with the others, Daphne's cheeks flushed with a mixture of emotions as she watched Harry's reckless bravery. Despite her fear for him, she couldn't help but feel a swell of admiration for his selflessness.
"He's buying us time," Daphne murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "We need to use it wisely."
Tracy nodded in agreement, her eyes fixed on the corridor where Harry had disappeared with the troll hot on his heels. "Let's go," she said, determination firm in her tone. "We need to find a way to help him."
With a shared resolve, Daphne, Tracy, Draco, and the others set off, their footsteps echoing through the empty halls as they hurried to join the fray and aid their friend in his daring stand against the troll.
As Harry raced up the stairs, the troll's heavy footfalls echoed ominously behind him. With each step, he could feel the creature closing in, its labored breaths hot on his neck. He skidded to a halt at the top of the staircase, panic rising within him as he scanned his surroundings for an escape route.
The paintings lining the walls stared back at him with silent curiosity, offering no help in his dire situation. Harry knew he had to act fast, but he also had to be mindful of the magical artwork that could potentially intervene if he wasn't careful.
With a thunderous roar, the troll swung its club toward him, the massive wooden weapon threatening to crush him into oblivion. Harry's instincts kicked in, and he rolled to the side just in time, narrowly avoiding certain death.
Heart pounding, Harry sprinted up the stairs, the troll hot on his heels with each heavy step. As he ascended, Harry couldn't help but reflect on the absurdity of his predicament. This was his first truly life-threatening situation since arriving at Hogwarts, and he found himself wondering if he'd inadvertently signed up for a lifetime of perilous adventures.
Reaching the fourth flight of stairs, Harry stole a glance behind him to find the troll panting heavily, its massive frame struggling to keep up with his relentless pace. He knew he had to act decisively before the creature regained its strength.
Dodging another swing from the troll's club, Harry unleashed a piercing curse that struck the creature squarely in the eye. The troll howled in agony, but before it could recover, Harry fired another curse, blinding it completely.
With the troll disoriented and thrashing about, Harry seized the opportunity to weaken its footing. Channeling his magic, he cast a Reductor spell at the stairs beneath the creature's feet, causing them to crack and splinter dangerously.
"Daphne's going to kill me for this," Harry muttered under his breath, his mind racing with a mixture of fear and determination. Gathering his courage, he propelled himself from the railing, hurtling through the air toward the lower stairs.
With a deft maneuver, Harry managed to grab hold of the railing and pull himself up, his wand at the ready. He unleashed another Reductor spell, this time targeting the foundation of the stairs beneath the troll's towering form.
The troll bellowed in fury as it regained its sight, its gaze fixing on Harry with murderous intent. Ignoring the rising sense of dread, Harry focused all his energy on his wand, unleashing a powerful Bombarda Maxima spell aimed directly at the weakened structure beneath the troll's feet.
As the stairs crumbled beneath the troll's weight, confusion flashed across the creature's face as it plummeted downward. Harry watched with a mixture of relief and disbelief, still waving and smiling as if he'd just won a game.
With a deafening crash, the troll hit the ground, its anguished cries echoing through the chamber. Harry counted to five before the noise ceased, signaling the troll's demise. Wiping sweat from his brow, he sank to the ground, the adrenaline-fueled rush beginning to ebb away.
"A troll!" Harry chuckled incredulously, though he was keenly aware of the anger simmering beneath his laughter. "I took down a damn troll! Though surviving the troll won't count for much if Daphne's going to kill me." He pushed himself up and descended the stairs cautiously, approaching the fallen troll with caution.
As he reached the ground, Harry was met with a bewildering sight. Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Quirrell, Daphne, Tracy, the golden trio, and the Slytherin prefects stood before him, their expressions a mix of shock and concern.
"What's the matter? Why the stares?" Harry asked, confusion furrowing his brow. He opened his mouth to explain but was cut off as Daphne raced forward and enveloped him in a tight hug.
"It's okay, Daph," Harry began, but before he could finish, Daphne pulled back and delivered a sharp blow to his arm.
"Ouch! What was that for?" Harry protested.
"What was that for?!" Daphne exclaimed incredulously. "You went after a troll, you idiot! What were you thinking?"
Harry attempted to interject, but Daphne's tirade continued unabated. "You weren't thinking! You were reckless, and I was sick with worry! I can't believe you..."
Before Daphne could continue, Harry silenced her with a sudden and unexpected gesture. Cupping her face gently in his hands, he drew her close and pressed his lips to hers in a tender kiss.
"Daph," Harry whispered softly as he pulled away, his eyes locking with hers. "I promise you, I'm okay."
Amidst the stunned silence that followed, Snape's voice cut through the tension. "Mr. Potter, what exactly happened here?"
Harry glanced at the golden trio, silently urging them to provide their account of the events. Adrian stepped forward, his expression serious as he recounted their version of the encounter with the troll.
"Hermione wasn't in the hall," Adrian began. "We heard about the troll and went looking for her. When we found her, the troll was already there."
McGonagall's eyes widened in alarm. "My goodness, Miss Granger, are you alright?"
Hermione nodded. "Yes, Professor. They helped me escape. We started running, and then the troll followed us."
Tracy interjected sharply. "And you led him straight to us!"
Snape raised an eyebrow, his gaze shifting between the students. "What do you mean?"
"We were heading to the library," Harry explained, "and the troll must have left the dungeons by then. It seems Hermione's group inadvertently brought the troll to our location."
Dumbledore regarded them thoughtfully. "It appears there was a misunderstanding in the chaos. Nevertheless, I commend all of you for your bravery and quick thinking in handling the situation. Mr. Potter, Miss Greengrass, and Miss Davis, I believe you all deserve recognition for your actions."
Harry exchanged a glance with Daphne and Tracy, a sense of pride swelling within him. Despite the danger and uncertainty, they had faced the troll head-on and emerged victorious.
As the professors continued to discuss the events and ensure the safety of the students, Harry couldn't help but feel a newfound sense of camaraderie with his fellow Slytherins and even a grudging respect for the golden trio. In the face of danger, they had come together, setting aside their differences to confront a common threat. And in that unity, Harry found hope for the future of Hogwarts.
Tracy's words hung in the air, emphasizing the critical role Harry played in diverting the troll's attention and protecting the Slytherin students. Dumbledore listened intently, his expression a mixture of curiosity and concern.
"What did Mr. Potter do?" Dumbledore inquired, his eyes fixed on Daphne, who had regained her composure after the unexpected kiss.
Daphne took a deep breath before recounting Harry's daring actions. "Professor, he saw the troll approaching and immediately instructed us to seek safety. Then he dashed toward the trio and the troll. Harry swiftly maneuvered past them, evading the troll's attacks. He used a Lumos spell to blind the troll momentarily, followed by an Incendio and a stunning spell aimed at its vulnerable spots."
McGonagall shook her head disapprovingly. "That was incredibly reckless of you, Mr. Potter. Did you truly believe you could confront a troll single-handedly?"
"No, Professor," Harry replied earnestly, "I knew I couldn't take it on alone. My intention was to draw its attention away from the others."
"And he succeeded," Daphne interjected, her voice filled with admiration. "The troll pursued him, and he led it away from the rest of us. After that, I'm not sure what happened."
Dumbledore turned his gaze to Harry, his eyes probing for answers. "Mr. Potter, what transpired next?"
"I led the troll up the stairs," Harry explained calmly. "Around the fourth flight, I incapacitated it by targeting its eyes with piercing curses. Then I used a Reductor curse to weaken the stairs beneath it. I leaped from the stairs, grabbing hold of the railing of the lower flight to prevent a fall. Finally, I unleashed a Bombarda Maxima spell to destroy the stairs, causing the troll to fall."
The shock was palpable among the onlookers as Harry's words sank in.
"You did what?!" Adrian exclaimed, his voice echoing the disbelief shared by others.
Harry repeated his actions, his tone unwavering. "I jumped from the stairs, targeted the lower portion with Reductor curses, and used Bombarda Maxima to bring the troll down."
"Are you insane?!" Adrian's outcry was echoed by others, their incredulity evident in their voices.
As Snape's inquiry hung in the air, Harry couldn't help but chuckle at the whirlwind of events that had unfolded. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was a sense of relief and camaraderie among them as they prepared to return to their dormitories.
"Well, sir," Harry began, addressing Snape's question, "after the troll fell, we regrouped, and that's when Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore arrived."
Dumbledore regarded Harry with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "Indeed, Mr. Potter. Your actions were both courageous and...reckless. However, it seems you acted out of a desire to protect your fellow students."
"Potter, you've caused immense damage!" Dumbledore admonished, his gaze shifting to the collapsed staircase.
"Mr. Potter saved lives!" McGonagall interjected firmly. "Forget the stairs; they can be repaired. What matters is that he acted with bravery and selflessness."
Snape nodded in agreement. "Indeed. Potter has risked his life to save many students today."
McGonagall turned to Harry and spoke with a hint of pride in her voice. "I would like to award you ten points for advanced magic, twenty points for saving friends and classmates, and another twenty points for defeating a troll."
"Thank you, Professor," Harry replied gratefully, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"You're welcome," McGonagall replied before addressing the group. "Now, I want all of you to return to your dormitories."
"Yes, Ma'am," Harry nodded, his gaze shifting to his friends.
