Vilgax loomed over the command deck of his massive starship, his crimson eyes fixed on the fleeing vessel ahead. The ship's hull was battered, sparks flying as explosions rippled through its side.

"Their propulsion systems have been destroyed," a robotic lieutenant reported, its voice monotone and precise.

"Excellent," Vilgax growled, his fists clenching. "Prepare to board! I want the Omnitrix now! This time, nothing will stand in my way."

The massive alien warlord turned, his cape sweeping behind him as the crew scrambled to obey. On the viewscreen, the crippled vessel tumbled helplessly through the void, a small escape pod launching away from it unnoticed.

Back on Earth, in a quiet forest clearing, the campfire crackled in the center of the campsite. Max sat on a folding chair, marshmallows skewered and ready. Across from him, Ben and Kuri sat on opposite ends of the bench, both glued to their respective handheld electronics, barely acknowledging each other.

"Who wants to roast marshmallows?" Max asked, his tone cheerful. Neither teen looked up.

"Okay, um… how about we tell scary stories?" Max tried again, his voice tinged with hope.

Silence.

Max sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Aw, come on, you two. We're all in this together. You can mope around all summer, or we can actually have some fun. What do you say?"

Ben set down his device with a huff. "I'm gonna take a walk."

Max watched him go, glancing at Kuri, who was still focused on her screen. He sighed. "I think they're starting to grow on each other. Slowly."

Kuri's lips twitched into a subtle smile as she heard Max's comment but didn't respond.

Ben wandered deeper into the forest, the soft crunch of leaves underfoot the only sound in the still night. He kicked a rock along the path, his thoughts swirling with frustration.

"Aw, man," he muttered. "This is gonna be the worst vacation ever. I might as well have gone to summer school."

Behind him, a shadow flitted silently between the trees. Kuri smirked, her steps light as she followed him, her long pigtails swaying with each movement.

Suddenly, a streak of light shot across the sky. Ben's eyes widened.

"Whoa! A shooting star!" he exclaimed, breaking into a run to follow it.

The streak of light wasn't a star but a glowing orb, descending rapidly toward the forest floor. It crashed with a loud boom, sending a plume of smoke into the air.

Ben reached the crash site, his heart pounding with excitement. In the center of a smoking crater sat a strange, glowing pod.

"Looks like a satellite or something," he muttered, stepping closer.

As he peered inside the pod, a metallic object suddenly jumped out and latched onto his wrist.

"Aah!" Ben yelped, stumbling backward. He fell into the crater, flailing as he tried to pull the strange device off his arm. "Get off me! Get off, get off!"

No matter how hard he pulled, the device—a high-tech, watch-like contraption—stayed firmly attached to his wrist. Exhausted, Ben finally gave up, slumping against the edge of the crater.

"Grandpa!" he shouted, before pausing, realization dawning on his face. "Wait a minute… Kuri. She knew. She sent me out here on purpose!"

A rustle in the trees made Ben spin around. A figure dropped gracefully from a low branch, landing lightly on her feet.

The figure stood before Ben, illuminated by the glow of the crash site. She was about his age but carried herself with a confidence that felt older. Her long black hair was tied into high pigtails, framing a white Mardi Gras-style mask painted with intricate red accents. She wore the flowing robes of a Shinto priestess—but with a modern twist. Her hakama, traditionally long, stopped just above her knees, revealing bright red puffed shorts underneath. Her outfit was completed by a golden pentacle hanging from her neck, gleaming in the dim light.

"You should try turning it clockwise, then slapping it down," she said, her voice calm and teasing.

Ben blinked. "Who are you, the user manual?"

The girl smirked, crossing her arms. "I'm here to help. Call me Miko."

"Miko?" Ben echoed, narrowing his eyes. "Seriously, Kuri? You're not even trying to hide it."

She didn't answer, instead gesturing toward the Omnitrix. "You might want to stop fighting it. That thing chose you for a reason."

Ben scowled, tugging at the device again. "I didn't ask to be chosen."

"Yeah, well," Miko said with a shrug, "neither did I."

Ben hesitated, her words catching him off guard. For the first time, he noticed the weight behind her teasing tone. There was more to this girl than she let on.

With a resigned sigh, Ben touched the Omnitrix. The central dial popped up, revealing a glowing holographic figure. His eyes lit up with curiosity.

"Whoa," he muttered. "Not saying you're right, but… cool."

He twisted the dial, stopping on a fiery alien form. With a grin, he slammed the Omnitrix down. A burst of green light engulfed him, and when it cleared, Ben stood transformed into Heatblast.

"Cool!" Ben exclaimed, before realizing his body was engulfed in flames. "Wait—AAAAH! I'm on fire! I'M ON FIRE!"

Miko stifled a laugh, stepping forward. "Relax! You're Heatblast. You are the fire. Just focus."

Ben flailed, his fiery arms flinging embers in every direction. "Focus?! Easy for you to say, Miko! You're not the one about to burn down the forest!"

"Okay, hothead, let me help." Miko placed her hand on his arm, her calm energy radiating through him. "Take a deep breath. Control it."

Ben felt the flames settle slightly, his panic subsiding. He looked down at her hand on his arm, then into her eyes. For a moment, the chaos around them disappeared.

"Thanks," he said quietly, his voice carrying a hint of awe.

Miko stepped back, her smirk returning. "Don't get used to it. You're still a rookie."

Before Ben could retort, a deafening roar shook the forest. Both teens turned toward the sound, their eyes widening.

"Something's coming," Miko said, her tone serious.

Ben clenched his fiery fists, his grin returning. "Good. I've got some heat to burn off."

Miko watched him, a small smile playing at her lips. "Let's hope the Omnitrix knows what it's doing."

As the two stood together, ready to face whatever was heading their way, the stars above seemed to shine a little brighter. Whatever this summer had in store, it was going to be unforgettable—for both of them.
