Dear Spencer
That new professor I told you about, the wanker that made us all buy his books is a total idiot. He couldn't teach a dog how to wag its tail let alone a wizard how to cast a spell, his books spend more time talking about what he was wearing and how great he looked when he defeated whatever creature he's supposed to have defeated or cured than the spell he used to do it. Worse than that he's a wretched fame hog, one of those people who wants to be famous just for being famous sake (bloody flaming mad if you ask me) and he keeps trying to drag me into things for the extra attention. I keep reminding myself that useless and annoying are better than murderous and evil when it comes to teaching at a school full of kids but he's so bloody annoying I'll be lucky if I don't end up in detention for hexing the git. Though maybe I wouldn't get in trouble depending on who saw me do it, even the other professors all seem to dislike him because he keeps turning up butting into their work telling them how much better he could do it. You should see Snape glare at him. I almost liked the greasy git for a moment. If I'm really lucky one of them will hex him for us. The thing is he's a fake, his spells aren't in Latin like every other spell we've learned and worse than that, they seem to don't work for anyone, not even Hermione and I've never seen him cast anything other than simple first or second year charms most of my classmates can cast. Of course, it's impossible to know if the spell would actually work or not because it's not like we can have a transformed werewolf in class to practice on. But even the little spells he tries to teach us like the one to make the pixies behave or get back in the cage didn't work for him. He wasn't even able to show us what it was supposed to do and then he ran out of the classroom in fright leaving us to gather up the pixies somehow before they got out into the school. I would have just let them loose but as I said Hermione thinks he's wonderful and insisted we complete the assignment before we left.
Hermione seems to have a bit of a crush on him which I think is hilarious but it's pissing off Ron (which is also hilarious but I don't know why he's so fussed about it, it isn't as if he likes her, he's still always complaining about her making him study). Speaking of crushes, unfortunately I think Ginny is still crushing on me, she giggles and blushes and stares at me. Thank Merlin she's younger and not in any of my classes. What is it with girls, it seems half the class has gone silly over Lockhart the fake poser and the other half gets all giggly about various boys. Olliver has a couple of girls that follow him around too, but he doesn't seem to mind too much when the twins tease him about it. The girls are both kind of hot but I honestly think he barely notices them unless they're talking about quidditch.
There's another first year who seems to have some sort of crush on me too. He's into photography and I seem to be his favourite subject to take pictures of. I wouldn't mind so much if he'd ask, or take photo's from a distance but he shoves his camera right in my face and it's a magical camera with a great big blinding flash. The silly little git is lucky I didn't think I was being attacked and hex him, but if he keeps surprising me like that I will. I have tried to ask him to stop but he just looked like he was going to cry. I felt horrible and it didn't do a bit of good he was taking photos of me again the next day. He at least has the sense not to jump out at the Slytherins with his bloody flash which is a pity because they'd break his camera if he did it to them. Not that I won't be tempted to break it myself if he keeps it up.
All our other professors are the same as last year, which is not all that surprising when Hermione says some of them have been teaching here for decades. Snape is still being horrible, potions are still with the Slytherins and he favours them in everything. Flitwick is still the coolest professor I have, McGonagall is still strict as ever and Binns is still sending us all to sleep every class.
The spells we're learning seem more complicated than last year but I'm still managing to do them all with my fake wand in fact Seamus Dean and I are nearly beating Hermione in getting the spells right, I guess all that extra magic we used in the time compression paid off. Ron, Neville, Lavender and Parvati were complaining about how much more difficult second year is. We're getting assigned longer essays too which might be what they were complaining about instead of the magic.
I tried to talk to a house elf and ask about whether Dobby's behaviour could have been his own idea, but all she did was squeak and offer me desserts. I asked her if she could take me to a senior house elf who could answer my questions, or at least give them a message that I'd like to speak with them about something but none of them have come near me since. It was awfully good treacle tart though, I wonder how she knew it was my favourite? I guess the fact that she couldn't even talk to me tells me Dobby had to have been following orders.
I wouldn't worry too much if the stuff you're learning now isn't what you want to do forever, I expect most people your age have no idea what they want to do yet, and at least you've managed to rule out some of the areas you had thought you might be interested in so that's some progress at least and you learn things so quickly that you have plenty of time to try out a dozen different career ideas and you've learned enough to get a job if you wanted to have a break from university while deciding what you want to do next. It's not like you're going to turn your back on everything you've learned and decide to be a chef or a landscape gardener like I might. I honestly don't know if I want to stay in the magical world and use magic all the time when I finish Hogwarts. I think I'd like to live between the two worlds, more like the Finnegans do. I have no idea what I want to do for a career in the magical world though. I wouldn't mind working in a restaurant or for that landscaper that offered me a job when I'm old enough but I don't really know what other jobs are even out there in the magical world. One of Ron's brothers works with dragons and the other is a curse breaker which sounds kind of interesting but I've no idea what he actually does or how to get a job like that. Putting those protective charms on that chain for you was fun too and the professor was impressed but I don't know if I could make a living doing something like that.
Did I tell you that I'm doing a couple of correspondence classes. History and Geography, the headmaster at Scoil Draiocht recommended it because it would make scheduling me into third year math and science easier if I didn't have to take all of the other second year classes. It's a pit it's history because I really enjoyed the class but perhaps I could sit in on some if I'm free at the time. I wish I could have had the stuff while I was at the Dursleys but it wasn't ready then. Seamus brought it to school with him for me.
Your friend always
Harry
