Dear Harry
Thank you for the book satchel it's amazing and it's the sort of satchel I would have liked to have bought myself even without the enchantments on it. But I couldn't have afforded to buy myself a bag like that in the nonmagical world and I cannot think that being magical would've made it any cheaper with all the enchantments on it. I feel a little guilty that you spent so much money on me in addition to the protection amulet and the runes for the house to protect Mom. You really didn't need to buy me a present at all after all that, much less such an extravagant present. Be assured that I will use it though, every day. Don't worry about the restrictions on electronics, I'm quite content with old fashioned things so it shouldn't be much of an issue until electronics manage to keep up with my reading speed, if they ever do, and I can easily keep my Walkman hooked to my belt.
How could Hermione expect you to spend that sort of money on her when you already knew that she certainly didn't on you? I feel guilty that you spent that much on me, I never would have expected it of you and I know that I'm your best friend. Did she see how much the bag cost? Even if she thought that you thought she was a genuine friend it's not reasonable, and it doesn't sound like she had enough other good friends willing to chip in together to buy it either. Not that you could have organized that over the summer with your mail being stolen the way it was and she knew about that. You did her a favour by showing her and her mother the luggage shop and the bags with lightening charms. Does she realise that most of the other witches and wizards already have a bag with similar charms?
Does it worry you that Hermione and Ron now know there's someone else more important to you than the two of them? Ron might have forgotten or not paid much attention to you buying my satchel but if Hermione was expecting you to give it to her she's going to want to know who you did buy it for.
I loved the ice-creams, the jam donut flavour was amazing, and kind of shocking. I've never had ice-cream with hot jelly before, not a sauce that stays hot without melting the ice-cream, I liked the strawberry jelly and peanut butter flavor too.
I had a great Birthday. Mom was well enough to come to the phone and speak on it without worrying about it trying to control us or the government listening in when I rang and she remembered my birthday, well more likely Aunt Ethel reminded her but she wished me a happy birthday and was clear headed the whole time I spoke with her. I almost wish that I could have gone home and spent the day with her. I spent a couple of hours with my project group and you're right, while they're impressed that I've finished my part of the project none of them asked me to take on part of their share and they're all progressing well so I can see up being finished well ahead of the deadline if things continue this way. We went out for coffee afterwards and talked about non class related stuff. Nothing serious, just sports and current affairs and things but it was a fun afternoon.
Ethan arranged a cake and a small party for me after dinner. Nearly the whole house came for a while and we watched a couple of Star Trek movies, luckily there was no football on tonight so there weren't too many complaints about us hogging the big TV. It wasn't a big party since I'm not allowed to go to the big drinking parties the house mostly has but it was nice. Probably the best birthday I've had since my dad left.
I was thinking, is there such thing as a repelling charm keyed to a specific person. Either something you cast on yourself and others that you could key to Professor Idiot to make him want to avoid you or not notice you, or something keyed to you that you cast on him to make him want to stay away from you and leave you alone. Pranks are all very well and probably satisfying for a while but it would be better if you could solve the problem and stop him from retaliating.
