Dear Harry
I really don't like the idea of someone or something moving around your school turning pets into statues, if he can do that, he'd probably be able to do it to a student too and if the spell is as advanced as Dumbledore says it is, then you're probably not going to be able to protect yourself from it any better than the cat could. It worries me that you're in danger again.
The other question is why attack the cat? It makes no sense. I know you've mentioned that this cat is not very friendly and you think it might be spying on you for the caretaker though I'm not sure how it could. How would it communicate with him, do you think that the caretaker can speak cat? The way you can speak snake? So, I guess if you're right then none of the other students like the cat Mrs Norris either so one of them might have tried to attack him, but Dumbledore was sure this wasn't the work of a student and surely nobody else would have a motive to get rid of the cat. Unless they believed it was able to tell Filch who it saw and it was someone that shouldn't be in the school. The school is definitely big enough for someone to hide in one of the unused areas if the wards didn't keep people unrelated to the school out. But I don't know how the person would get food and stuff or come and go without being seen unless portkeys or some other magical travel works from inside the castle to let someone come and go without using the entrances. I think that if there is someone hiding out in the school it would have to be with Dumbledore's permission, which would solve the food issue too, the elves would feed them. But if Dumbledore knew then would there be a need to attack the cat? It's a bit of a circular argument.
Also if someone was hiding out in the school and wanted to avoid attention, why would they use such an attention drawing spell? And hang up the cat to draw even more attention to it. Someone wanted the cat found and the spell identified. I can understand wanting the cat found instead of missing, the last thing someone hiding in the school needs would be a search party but if they were getting rid of the cat because it had seen something it would have made sense to kill it in a way that looked like natural causes. Was it a warning of some kind? Or a threat? Does the fact you hear the voice mean they're threatening you? Is this the beginning of what Dobby was trying to warn you about?
It's extremely odd that you are the only one hearing the threats. Do you think Ron and Hermione could have been lying to you about not hearing the voice for some reason? Though I honestly cannot think of a reason they'd do that. I wish Dean or Seamus had been with you to know for sure you're the only one hearing it. The only other explanation I can think of is that it isn't a person but a snake speaking and you were the only one who heard it as words and understood it, the others might have heard a hissing noise but you specifically asked them about a voice talking about ripping someone to shreds so they didn't think to mention that they heard hissing if they even noticed it and didn't just think it was something like water in the pipes.
The words you heard also don't make sense, the voice you heard was talking about ripping and tearing someone or something and the cat was turned into a statue nobody was killed and nothing was ripped into pieces but it's almost too much of a coincidence that you heard the voice in almost the same place that you found the cat for it not to be related. I know it was only a couple of words and you didn't hear who or what was speaking but did you get the impression that they meant them, it wasn't someone fooling around? Had you told Ron or Hermione about hearing the voice the first time?
I'm sorry the party was a disappointment, did you at least meet some interesting ghosts? I suppose we shouldn't have had such high expectations that it would be interesting considering how boring the ghost who is supposed to be teaching you history manages to make an interesting topic. You probably learned more at the party than you did from him in the past year and a bit. Did you manage to get any dinner after everything? If you didn't get dinner at least you should get a bit of a break from Ron hanging around until he forgives you again.
I enjoyed hearing about the prank you played on professor idiot, don't worry I don't think that it's bullying, if anything the way he singles you out in class could be considered bullying and harassment and anything that makes you feel better about that is fair game as far as I'm concerned. The prank will be effective and no doubt it will be satisfying though. A man like that would hate knowing he was being laughed at behind his back more than almost anything except being ignored completely, but I do wish that you would put your energy into stopping him from being able to embarrass you in the first place rather than just retaliating to embarrass him because you were embarrassed. As much as I love the prank idea but keying spells to a password gave me another idea that might actually do you more good than embarrassing him. Is there a way to alter the notice-me-not spell so it affects only one person instead of using the password so it affects everyone other than the person you told the password to? Then you could cast it on yourself and the idiot wouldn't be able to call you up in class like that, but would he then mark you as absent in the role. I wouldn't want you to get a detention because he thinks you've skipped class.
Things are going well for me here, classes are great and my TA classes are going okay, students seem grateful for my help and nobody has commented on my being too young to be a TA for a couple of weeks now. Ethan has a crush on one of the girls in our house which is a bit awkward because he's behaving very oddly when she's around. I can't think how she hasn't noticed but she doesn't seem to have. Maybe she has and is pretending not to in the hope he'll get over it without her having to reject him or maybe she isn't interested enough to notice his behaviour has changed. Neither of those is particularly encouraging but Ethan hasn't realised that and I don't know whether I should tell him or not. I don't think he'd take advice from me anyway. The kid who has never had a crush on anybody, or had anybody crush on me, never been on a date or asked a girl out. What would I know about it? But I know one thing, if having a crush makes you behave so strangely and embarrasses you then I'm glad I don't have one. Maybe my advice to you was wrong, maybe you it would be kinder to tell Ginny that you don't feel that way about her.
Your friend always
Spencer
