Lunella and I set up a fake heist for Devil, but the truth is, we were just trying to get him clean. You try cleaning a pet dinosaur. Not easy. "Hurry, D! Bad guys are getting away!" Lunella shouted as Devil was running through traffic. "Sorry!" "They're in there! Go get 'em!" I lied, just as Devil realized our plan to run him through an empty car wash. At least I hope it was empty. "Yeah, yeah, we know, but you wouldn't have come if we told you it was bath time." Devil rolled his eyes and began walking back to the lab. "Devil!" Lunella snapped as we both began pulling Devil into the car wash. "Help. Come here. Listen to Mama!" "You're not gonna win. I hope you know that!" I strained, eventually going to a nearby drive thru to try and bribe Devil. "Four quarters, please." "Is that thing safe?" The cashier asked. "This thing? Yeah!" Lunella answered, pointing at her helmet. "I made it myself. Just me and my brother here." "No, him." He corrected. "Him?" I wondered, pointing to Devil. "Pfft! No." Devil hid behind a nearby car, but we could still see him of course. "Uh, hello? We can see you." I pointed out. Devil whimpered. "You're the one who went swimming in the East River." Lunella recalled. "Probably covered in cadmium, dioxin, fish boogers." "Two words: na-sty!" I added, heading back to the drive thru. "Hey, you weren't gonna eat this, were you?" "I guess not." The cashier frowned as I took his hot dog. I tossed the hot dog in the car wash as Devil went after it and Lunella turned on the car wash. While he was complaining, Devil grabbed both of us with his tail and pulled us into the car wash. "There. Was that so bad?" Lunella asked as we came back out. All of a sudden, Devil grabbed a nearby dumpster and started eating discarded food, which of course landed on top of me and Lunella. I ran back to the drive thru. "Four more quarters, please." I groaned.
At the rink later that day, Lunella and I were spending some time skating together, just me and my big sis. Then I noticed Mama talking to her turntables again. "So, look, the grownups are hitting Roller Jam in Jersey tonight." Mama said. "But don't you worry. Saul from the Hasty Mart's gonna watch the rink and keep you safe, you beautiful, precious little..." "Mom, they'll be fine." Lunella interrupted. "Wait till they get a load of your old Pops at Roller Jam!" Pops exclaimed, showing off his dope skills. "Smooth move, Dad. Let me try." Dad said, trying to imitate Pops' skating. "Whoa, I got it. I don't got it! Alright, I'm down here now." "You good, Dad?" I asked, helping Dad get back on his feet. "I'm alright, little man." Dad replied. "I'm just getting warmed up." Over by the kitchen, Lunella and I could smell Mimi's homemade kettle corn. We skated over to check on her progress. "Mimi! Mimi! Mimi! Is it done yet?" I asked. "'Bout 20 minutes." Mimi replied. "Ugh! But that's like, a year!" Lunella groaned. "Lamar and I wanna eat some now!" "My special kettle corn recipe takes time, child." Mimi explains. "If I juice up the microwave, we can pump out popcorn in two seconds instead of 20 minutes." Lunella said. "I'll hook it up to my fusion generator and use high speed servos to..." "Lunella Lafayette, why are you always in such a hurry?" Mimi asked. "Sometimes the most important ingredient is a pinch of..?" "Paprika? Parsley? Oh, no, no. Plutonium!" Lunella exclaimed. "Calm down there, genius." I reassured her. "Patience. In cooking, and in life." Mimi said. Suddenly, Pops got a phone call from someone while skating. "Hey, Saul! What's crackin'? Uh huh. Fantastic!" Pops hung up his phone. "No Roller Jam for us!" "What?!" The rest of us gasped. "Saul's gout flared up again." Pops explained. "He can't cover the rink for us." "Gout. The silent killer." Dad sighed. "S'all right. Always next year." Pops said. "Lord willing." "We should go anyway." Mama suggested. "Let's just close the rink. It's one night." "May I remind you, in 42 years, our family has never closed Roll With It for a skate session. No matter how many or how few show up, we let 'em in." Pops reminds us. Lunella and I looked at each other, thinking the same thing. "We'll do it! We'll run the rink!" We shouted in unison. "Jinx!" I joked. "No way we're letting y'all miss Roller Jam." Lunella said. "It's like your Super Bowl!" "Back up, Lu..." Mama began. "We got this, Mama." I interrupted. "I'm responsible, Lulu's smart enough." "Oh, we know." Dad said. "Your sister is so smart, it's basically terrifying." "Alright, then give us one good reason why we can't do this." Lunella said. "I can think of thirteen." Mama replied. "Number one, you're both 13!" "And two through thirteen: you're both 13!" Dad added. "Dad, two thirteen-year-olds who know this place inside and out." I explained. "Plus, I do the books, and statistically speaking, Tuesday's slow, yo!" Lunella added. "Bet I could get Ahmed from the deli to pop in." Pops suggested. "Ah, yes, Ahmed!" Lunella exclaimed. "Love that guy." "This is ridiculous." Mama commented. "Help me out here, Mimi!" Mimi was already packed up and ready to go to Jersey. "Actually, I think a nice slow Tuesday running the rink is exactly what Lunella and Lamar need." Mimi said. "You're always saying they could both use more formative experiences." "Right, formative experiences!" Lunella agreed. "Oh, look at us, so unformed..." "Let's get our Roller Jam on!" Mama chuckled.
After Mama, Dad, Pops, and Mimi left for Roller Jam, it was time to run the rink for the first time. "Bye!" Lunella waved as their cab was leaving for Jersey. "Okay, Lamar, let's run this rink!" "Sun and Moon Magic." I whispered while doing a sibling handshake with Lunella.
Turns out that Mimi was right. Tuesdays are slow at the rink. I guess I never really noticed that before. Not even an hour after we were left alone, Lunella couldn't take how slow everything was. "Nuh-uh! Who has time for this?!" Lunella complained. "Um, we do?" I questioned. "Mimi did say it was supposed to be slow." She began hooking up her fusion generator while I was talking. "Let's juice this up, little bro!" Lunella exclaimed, turning on her generator to oil the skates, pour the drinks, and stir the kettle corn. But Lunella thought it could be faster. "Hm. Maybe just a little more juice..." "Hold up! What happened to slow and steady?!" I asked as she cranked up the power of the generator. "Lulu! You might've added too much juice!" That's when the rink started flooding with kettle corn and skates were flying towards us. "Try and look for the fusion generator." Lunella said, looking around in the kettle corn as I did the same. I found Lunella's fusion generator and switched it off before things got worse. "I got it!" I sighed with relief. "Oh! How are we gonna get this cleaned up before they get home?!" "Okay, okay, five thousand cubic inches of popcorn per square foot times ten thousand square feet of floor means..." Lunella calculated. "Ugh! We'll be sweeping till the sun goes supernova! There's gotta be a faster way to..." "Already ahead of you, Lulu." I interrupted. "I'll try to clean up as much stuff around here as I can while you pick up Devil." "Thanks, Lamar." Lunella said. "We'll be back faster than the speed of light." After Lunella left, all I could think about was whether Devil can fit through the doors of the rink.
As soon as they returned, Lunella had Devil begin eating the kettle corn while I sat in shock. "You got it! Come on!" Lunella encouraged. "I knew you could do it! You better eat that popcorn!" "I guess he was able to fit inside the doors." I said in shock. "All of it! All of it!" Lunella shouted. "Keep going! Keep going! Eat it! Eat it! Eat the popcorn!" "Wait! Wait!" I warned as Devil continued eating. He ended up getting closer to Mama's turntables, accidentally knocking them over and destroying them. At least he didn't eat the parts. "No!" "Mom's turntables!" Lunella gasped. "Okay, okay. Maybe I can fix this. I can fix anything." All of a sudden, Devil moved his tail and accidentally hit the parts that were possibly fixable while still eating popcorn. "Yeah, you ain't fixing that." I said.
Lunella and I looked at each other in fear. Mama would not be happy. Devil grunted. "Yes, I do think Mom will notice!" Lunella exclaimed. "What are we supposed to do about this?" I asked. "We need professional help." Lunella sighed, dialing Casey's number on her phone. "Go for Casey." Casey said. "Casey, Lamar and I are runnin' the rink, and there was all this popcorn, and Devil chowed down, but then, our Mom's turntables got busted and..." Lunella explained. "Faster, faster!" Casey exclaimed. "We're runnin' the rink and there was all this popcorn..." I repeated, speeding up. "Not you! I'm talking to my dads." Casey interrupted. "Hang tight, LL Cool Girl and LJ Cool Boy. Be there in ten." "I'm gonna go eat my feelings." I said, grabbing some popcorn from the counter as Casey hung up.
Once Casey arrived at the rink, Casey looked up replacement parts for Mama's turntables on the internet. "Bad news. Your mom's limited edition SL-1200 turntables are super rare." Casey explained. "Of course they are." I sighed. "No! Not super rare!" Lunella complained. "But great news, I located some at a nearby pawn shop! Mint condish!" Casey reassured us as we cheered. "But, uh, bad news again. They're basically unaffordable." "You mean it costs ?" I asked. "Excuse my French." "Ugh! This is a disaster, guys!" Lunella groaned. "No, hey. Okay. One girl's disaster is another girl's opportunity!" Casey exclaimed. "Which girl am I?" Lunella asked. "Disaster most likely." I teased. "This is a business, yes?" Casey asked. "Where you make money?" "Statistically speaking, Tuesday's slow, yo." Lunella replied. "Inspirationally speaking, we'll just have to make it your most successful night ever." Casey said. "And I know how." "What do you have in mind?" I asked. "Tonight, at Roll With It, a very special appearance by Moon Girl, Sun Boy, and Devil Dinosaur." Casey explained as Lunella and I glared at her. "All your fans come. We make bank. We buy new turntables. Your parents never know what happened. And if there's money left over, we buy shoes." "I do like the idea of possibly getting some new sneakers." I commented as Devil grunted. "I know, but how else are we supposed to make a ton o' money?" Lunella asked. "Give me the green light and Superhero Skate Night will be all over social media faster than you can say Casey Maria Eva Duarte Goldberg Calderon!" Casey said and Devil growled. "Did I mention that the promo also includes an all you can eat snack bar?" Devil got pretty excited about that. "Oh, so now it's a good idea?" I asked. "It's all about the snacks." Casey said, handing Lunella her phone and she published the post.
After getting suited up, we prepared everything for tonight's event. It did take a few hours though. "Catering, check! Transportation, check! Sound department, check!" Casey exclaimed. "And publicity?" "Uh, check! But we used up all the glitter." Lunella replied. So, no more glitter." Devil frowned. "I'm exhausted from covering Devil with glitter!" I complained. "If you don't like it, you shouldn't have smashed the turntables." Casey said to Devil, handing him a wooden sign, only to drop it. "Here. Now smiles, everyone! Doors open in three, a two, a one. Let's get this money!"
Casey went to the front door to let customers inside. So many people showed up to show their support. To be honest, I was expecting people to crowd us like we were guests at New York Comic Con, but we did get a lot of people who wanted to skate with us. It was pretty cool to skate alongside the members of our community. Ahmed even came by and joined a conga line. "Ahh! This is actually gonna work!" Lunella squealed. "Literally nothing can stand in our way." Casey added. "Nothing. Absolutely nothing!" I laughed along. "Step up for a smack down, Moon Girl and Sun Boy!" A woman shouted from the front door. "Hold it, hermana! Door charge." Casey stopped her as she payed the entrance fee. "Thank you. Proceed." "I'm taking a shortcut to fame by taking you out!" She exclaimed. "Uh, sorry." Lunella apologized. "You are..."
Olympic hopeful Sophie Slugfoot took the fast lane to glory with a quick-twitch muscle compound that made her a sprinting sensation! But she was banned for life and so she turned her life to crime and became... Instantanegirl!
"Insta-what?!" Lunella, Casey, and I asked in unison. "Instantanegirl!" She explained. "Like, "instantaneous?"" "It's just kinda hard to say..." Casey pointed out. "Oh! Maybe "Speedygirl!"" Lunella suggested. "Ooh, I've got one! "The Flash."" I added. "Wait! Scratch that, I'll think of something better." "Instantanegirl!" She shouted, using her speed to charge at Lunella and me, only for her to skate into the wall. "Still like "Speedygirl" better." Casey said. "Truth!" Lunella agreed. "Moon Girl and Sun Boy win!" Ahmed shouted as everyone else cheered. "Yo, did you set that up, Case?" I asked. "Nope. Happy accident. #rollwithit." Casey replied. "But what if more villains show up?" Lunella wondered. "Chill, chica." Casey reassured her. "I'm sure that was the only..." All of a sudden, a huge leg pushed into the door. "I want dinosaur!" The large figure shouted, revealing his true self, a giant man baby?Lunella and I glared at Casey. "Uh..." Casey chuckled nervously.
Little Timmy Grubs grew up a little too fast after wandering into his father's bio lab and getting blasted with growth rays. Now, he stalks the night seeking bottles, wubbies, and toys as the terrible Man Baby!
"It's mine!" He whined, wrestling with Devil, eventually biting our dinosaur buddy. Devil yanked the Man Baby out of the rink. "You okay, Dev?" Lunella asked as Devil groaned in pain. Lunella kisses Devil's tail to comfort him. No one seemed too worried. The guests just assumed that we were performing a show. "Multiple villains?" I asked. "Yeah." Lunella replied. "This is getting..." "Incredible!" Casey interrupted. "Your own rogues gallery? That's year two kind of stuff, we are way ahead of schedule!" "No! I was gonna say getting out of hand!" Lunella exclaimed. "And bad things always come in threes, which means..." All of a sudden, a man with a glowing suit levitated into the rink. "Remember me?" He asked. "Um, no?" I questioned.
Gravitas. The godfather of gravity. His get-rich-quick scheme? Rip the vault right out of the central bank. But last night, the cash got cooked and Gravitas swore revenge. Ooh, this just got serious. You in danger, Moon Girl and Sun Boy.
Casey took a picture of Gravitas for the website. "Moon Girl and Sun Boy? What's the sun and the moon have to do with your whole schtick, anyway?" Gravitas asked. "You worship the sun and moon or something?" "Well, without sunlight, we could all die." I explained. "I don't know if worship is the best word to describe the sun." ""Worship?"" Lunella questioned. "I mean, both are def in my top 5 celestial bodies..." "You like the sun and moon so much, how 'bout I send you to space?" Gravitas asked. "'Cause when you mess with Gravitas, Gravitas is gonna mess right b..." "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" Lunella complained. We were able to dodge Gravitas's first attacks, Devil, however, wasn't so lucky. Once Devil was hit, he began levitating above the rink, which basically made him a giant disco ball since he was still covered in glitter. All we could do was skate away from Gravitas while he began levitating our fans. "Just wait, folks, Moon Girl and Sun Boy's about to kick some serious boo-tay!" Casey announced to everyone else. "Yo, MG, SB, you guys gotta take this clown down, fast!" "How? You saw what he did to Devil!" I recalled, hiding behind concessions with Lunella. "Oh, you don't wanna play?" Gravitas taunted. "You wanna hide like a punk? Alright. Then I'm not just sending you to space, I'm sending this whole roller rink!" Gravitas used his power to levitate the entire rink off the ground. "He's floating the whole place, guys!" Casey pointed out. "This'll crater our online reviews!" "Yeah, along with our family's rink and everyone in it!" Lunella exclaimed. "I may still have a fear of heights!" I whimpered. "I wanna get down!"
Lunella began talking to herself while Gravitas was still causing chaos. I was still terrified about being lifted up into space. And just to clarify, I had a fear of heights ever since I was little, but it has gotten better over time. Thanks Gravitas for ruining my life! "Yeah, we'll run the rink. We're responsible." She said to herself. "We won't let you down." "Shut up!" I panicked, grabbing onto my legs. "Is it hot in here?" "Who are you talking to?" Casey asked. "Get that guy!" "If we rush him, we'll just get gravitated, too!" Lunella explained. "Ugh! I rushed this whole thing. Just like I rush everything. I'm sorry, bro. You tried to warn me and I didn't listen." "It's okay." I said. "Next time, try to take Mimi's advice and be patient." "Are you going to be okay to fight?" Lunella asked. "I understand if you're not." "I think I'll be okay, Lulu, we just need a strategy." I replied.
We distracted Gravitas for a while once we realized he had a limited power supply paired with his suit. Once he was out of juice, Lunella and I finished the job. "Ay, I missed the beginning!" Casey said. "Can you do it again?" Lunella and I glared at Casey just as everyone fell to the floor. Since Gravitas was powerless now, the rink should be coming back to the ground. Gulp! The rink is gonna crash to the ground! "Power, I need power!" Lunella exclaimed, looking around, finding a solution. "Aha! D! Tail whip!" Devil launched us towards Gravitas. I grabbed the fusion generator and Lunella got the robot arm. As soon as she paired the two things together, Gravitas grabbed Lunella by the suit before she could activate the generator, but once Devil moved Gravitas, I was able to turn it on, saving everyone in the rink, landing safely. "Moon Girl and Sun Boy save the day again!" Casey shouted as everyone cheered. "How'd you know how to beat him?" "Ah, nah, simple." Lunella replied. "Based on the dimensions of his fusion tank, I calculated his energy supply and then employed evasive maneuvers till it was exhausted." Casey didn't understand any of that. "We used a pinch of patience." I explained, giving Lunella a fist bump.
Well, that skate night was a success. We had made enough money to replace the turntables before Mama and everyone got home. "Ooh, I missed you!" Mama exclaimed, running towards her turntables. "How were my babies? Don't worry, Mama's home now. Hold up." Oh snap, she knows, doesn't she? "You're even more beautiful than I remember!" Mama gasped as we both sighed with relief.
Lunella and I went to see Mimi cooking her homemade kettle corn. "Ahh, the sweet smell of slow cooked kettle corn." Lunella sighed. "You can say that again." I commented. "What about that idea of yours?" Mimi asked. "Something about speeding things up?" "Actually, Mimi, I think your recipe is perfect." Lunella said. "Well, okay then." Mimi smiled. "How 'bout our grandbabies? Running this place all on their own." Pops complimented. "Ha! Yeah, it was no big thing, Pops." I chuckled. "Just another slow Tuesday night." "Although, if I'm being real, we're in no rush to do it again." Lunella added. "Really? Why not?" Pops asked, just as Ahmed came down from the ceiling. "What the..."
