Sleep didn't come easy for Donatello. After talking with April, his stomach was in knots. Why did he have to say all that? Why did he let his hurt feelings get the better of him? He turned off his phone after their small tiff, worried that he'd try to call or text April and make things even worse. He had a history of making it worse.
"I'm such an idiot..." groaned the techy turtle, laying face down against his pillow on the bed. There wasn't much time before he had to go and meet with Aria along with his brothers, but he no longer felt it was a good idea. He was too torn over April and it would be unfair to slap on a faux smile when Aria was probably looking forward to this. With a heavy sigh, Donatello glanced down at the phone he'd tossed on the floor and wondered if he should cancel. He sat up finally and shook his head. No. It wasn't Aria's fault that he argued with April. Besides, a part of him wanted to go in spite of April. After all, she seemed convinced that Aria couldn't like him and though Donatello was insecure about it, he wanted to prove her wrong.
"Donnie?" Came Leonardo's voice as he knocked at his brothers door. "You up?"
Without answering right away, Donatello sighed once more and made his way to the door, swiping up his phone along the way and shoving it into his belt.
"Yeah," he answered while opening the door, "what's up?"
"You missed breakfast. Everything okay?"
"Of course," Donatello replied, "just a little tired."
He wasn't about to confide in his brothers about his fight with April. It would just give them more cause to say his crush was hopeless. That wasn't something he wanted to hear right now.
"Well you should try and eat something before training starts. We're having our session early since we're meeting your girlfriend later."
Donatello opened his mouth to protest, but instead, he brushed past Leonardo in a huff. He really didn't have the energy to argue right now. In fact, as the day went on, Donatello felt like he was in a haze. His mind was completely preoccupied. Switching from being upset over April to nervous about his brothers meeting Aria again. Especially after they all looked into her and found out those rather personal things. He was so distracted over these facts that he found himself knocked on his back several times during training and scolded by Splinter for his lack of discipline.
"Master, are you sure it's a good idea to meet with this girl?" Leonardo asked once training was over. "We don't know much about her."
Donatello was shaken from his haze with Leonardo's question. Slightly annoyed that his brother kept questioning his friend. "I already asked Master if we could meet her and he said it was fine," he interjected.
Splinter placed his hand on Leo's shoulder and smiled. "I understand your concern, Leonardo, but do not worry. I am certain this girl means no harm." He turned to his tallest son now, "Donatello, may I speak with you alone for a moment?"
"Yes, Master," replied Donatello, worried he was due for more scolding as his brothers left the room to give them privacy.
Splinter moved to his shelves and pulled out a small box. Donatello couldn't see what was inside the box, but he was immediately dumbfounded with what his father pulled out of it. In his fathers hand was the same bracelet that Aria had shown him when they first met. Identical down to the Diamond star charm that dangled from it. He was speechless as Splinter walked over to him and held out the jewelry for him to take.
"…wha…why do you have this?" Donatello asked, finally able to find some words in his jumbled mind as he took the bracelet from his father.
"It belonged to you," Splinter explained. "I did not think the day would come that I returned this to you, but it seems safe to do so now."
Donatello stared at the bracelet, unsure how he had come into possession of such a thing. "Master, I don't understand…" he tried again.
"I'm sure you don't," his father replied, "but it is not my story to tell and I'll admit, I don't know the whole thing. I just hope this is some proof that you may trust this new friend of yours. I'm certain she is sincere."
Though this only raised more questions, Donatello closed his fingers around the trinket gently and smiled. "Thank you, Master," he said honestly. It was at least a comfort to know that Splinter trusted Aria. It put him at ease about meeting her again.
Splinter gave his son permission to leave and Donatello walked from the room slowly, staring thoughtfully at the small charm bracelet in his hand. It still bothered him to have memories he couldn't recall. His memory was nearly photographic. So how did he forget meeting Aria?
"What's that?" Michelangelo asked as he approached his brother.
Donatello flinch and quickly placed the charm into his belt, "ah, just something I picked up," he replied, not really sure why he was hiding it. "Uhhh…what are you wearing?" Donnie asked when he got a good look at Mikey. The freckled turtle had a bow tie around his neck, a top hat on his head, and a monocle for his left eye.
"I found these buried in a box," Mikey replied as he adjusted the monocle gently. "Fancy, right? I figured if we're gonna visit your rich girlfriend, we should dress for the occasion."
Donatello swiped the top hat from Mikey's head, "no dressing up," he hissed in aggravation. "And don't mention anything about the money. I don't want her thinking you all were snooping into her background."
"I just want to make a good impression…" pouted Mikey.
With a heavy sigh, Donatello pat his brother on the head, "I know. Just…be yourself. Or…maybe tone it down a little at first…"
Michelangelo smiled and nodded his head. "It's almost time to go anyway. I'll go wash up. My hands are all dirty from digging in that old box."
Watching his little brother run off, Donatello felt a little grateful that Mikey was working so hard to get along with Aria. However, the fact that he thought they'd have to dress up worried him. There really was such a gap between Aria and them. Mutants who lived in the sewers and a high class young woman. He tossed the top hat to the floor and cursed inwardly. He hated feeling so insecure about all this. He just couldn't see how Aria could benefit from being around him.
Though Donatello spent most of the day in his room, staring at the bracelet and trying to trigger a memory, the only image that came to mind was Aria's sobbing face from his dream the other night. Which made about as much sense as any of this. He'd never seen Aria cry. When she was around him, she was always smiling. While Donnie thought on this, an alarm went off on his phone. It was time to go and meet with Aria. He placed the bracelet into his belt and after shutting off the alarm, he stared at the empty screen of his phone. No messages and no missed calls from April. Did she not care at all about their fight?
"C'mon… focus up, Donatello," the techy turtle mumbled to himself while packing the phone away and heading for his door.
When he stepped out into the main room, his brothers were waiting for him, although they looked a bit troubled. As he got closer, he immediately caught a glimpse of why that was. April had shown up. Why was she here? She didn't bother to call or anything after the fight and instead she just stopped by?
"Hey Donnie…look who came by for a visit…" Leonardo said awkwardly. "Um, so April was wondering…"
"I wanted to know if Aria would be okay with me coming to visit as well," April finished for Leonardo. "I mean, this was meant to get to know her better, wasn't it?"
Donatellos brothers glanced at him, all very aware how tense this felt. Even Mikey wasn't sure how to handle the situation. April seemed adamant on going, but it was clear that Donnie appeared flustered by the idea. He didn't know how to feel about this. Was April trying to make up? Or was she just trying to pretend that nothing happened? He also already knew that she was suspicious of Aria. Was this just some ploy to find dirt on her?
"I…I'd have to ask her…" he relented. As much as he wanted to stay mad at her, it was hard for the techy turtle. He hoped that this meant April was just worried about him, or maybe she genuinely wanted to make friends with Aria.
"Oh yeah, this is gonna be super fun now…" Raphael muttered to Leonardo sardonically.
After a moment, Donatello received a reply and he was relieved to find that Aria didn't have a problem with it. Though he noticed the text was shorter than usual. "She said it's fine. Um, we should really get going if we don't want to be late…"
Mikey seemed overly excited now, "You think she'll have slides going down the stairs? Or maybe like, an ice cream buffet? Oh! Or better yet, an Olympic sized pool! Or maybe—"
Leonardo put his hand over Mikey's mouth to silence his overexcited little brother. "You ready, Dee?"
Donatello glanced at his group of brothers. Of course they had the best intentions when they researched Aria, but he was still worried. "Yeah," he replied, rubbing the back of his neck anxiously, "just be on your best behavior, okay? …the address she gave us is a little far, so we'll have to take the shell-raiser."
"Sweet," Mikey exclaimed after pushing Leo's hand away. "Let's get going!"
Though it felt like this was a recipe for trouble, Donatello begrudgingly lead his brothers and April to their vehicle. He couldn't help thinking that something was off. Leonardo and Raphael were uncharacteristically quiet during the trip. Normally, they would tease him, or join Mikey in his strange fantasies about what Aria's home might be like, but they were being perfectly pleasant. His anxiety only worsened the further they traveled. Especially with April on board. They had left the rougher parts of the city and immediately felt like they had entered a different world.
They neared a large building, a tower really, or perhaps you could call it a skyscraper. Donatello felt out of place at once, noting how the shell raiser wasn't quite inconspicuous on Park Avenue. The cars around them were all pretty expensive and the turtles wondered how they would even exit the vehicle without being seen. Luckily for them, the building had a private garage which Aria informed would open when they arrived. Sure enough, when they drove up to the entrance, the mechanical doors lifted open and allowed the shell-raiser inside.
"Whoa…" Mikey exhaled, "this is just where you park?!" He exclaimed with his face stuck to the window, looking out at at least twenty to thirty fancy cars, all sitting comfortably in the pristine and shiny car lot.
"Okay…um…so it's a little fancier than we were prepared for…" Leonardo commented when the shell-raiser stopped.
"It's just a parking garage guys," April insisted, "almost every big condo building like these have one."
Donatello felt a pit in his stomach start to grow. Even where they parked their cars was cleaner than the shell-raiser. 'No,' thought Donatello, shaking his head. He made the shell-raiser on his own. How many people in this building could say the same for their vehicles? The last thing Donatello wanted to do was feel bad about something he'd built. "Okay guys, let's do this," he eventually announced, trying to put on a brave face.
When they exited the vehicle, the turtles flinched, startled to see a young man in a suit waiting for them in silence. The man had platinum blonde hair and hazel eyes. Though he looked professional, he couldn't have been much older than they were.
"Miss Aria is still setting things up. I'm here to guide you. My name is Lawrence, I'm well informed of your situation."
The turtles appeared slightly uncomfortable with his formal way of speaking, but they had other concerns at the moment.
"Um, nice to meet you, but…are you sure no one else will see us? I mean, the other residents might notice giant turtles wandering the lobby or something." Leonardo inquired awkwardly.
"No need to worry. This entire building is Dawn family property. Besides a few employees, Miss Aria lives here alone." Lawrence replied simply before turning on his heel. "Follow me to the elevator. "You can see the city as we ascend."
April huffed a bit, "the entire building? Isn't that a little much?" She muttered under her breath.
Michelangelo of course was the first to follow, excited at the prospect of looking down at the city. However, Donatello felt like his feet were dragging with each step. Though his brothers told him they discovered she was wealthy, it was only now sinking in just how well off she was. This building had to have at least 100 floors to it and Aria lived here alone? When they first approached it, Donatello assumed it was a a large condo complex where many people lived and maybe Aria occupied a space. Instead, she owned the entire thing. He couldn't even enjoy the scenery as the elevator lifted them towards their destination, but his brothers seemed to have a good time as they pointed out several landmarks the higher they got.
"So um…Aria told you about us?" Donatello asked Lawrence, trying to lighten the load on his chest by distracting himself.
"Of course. The other staff members have been dismissed for the evening. So you won't have to worry about them. As the head butler, I'm the only one privy to your situation."
Donatello chuckled awkwardly, "ha…I see. And um…you're not…surprised by any of this?"
"Not at all," replied Lawrence with a small smile. "I've been hearing about you for quite some time. I'm glad that you're here to see Miss Aria. She's been very much looking forward to this."
As the elevator came to a stop, Donatello held his breath, seemingly more nervous than ever before when the doors slid open to the 95th floor. Waiting for them, Aria stood in the middle of the room, wearing a large purple sweater dress that reached just above her knees with black leggings. It was the first time he'd seen her dress somewhat casually. She was always in nice dresses whenever she came to visit. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun and the only jewelry she wore, was the star charm bracelet on her wrist.
She had a nervous smile on her face, standing in front of a rather long table covered in food with at least thirty or so seats to choose from. The very walls of the floor seemed to be the windows themselves and a large table sat atop marble floors with an extensive matching fire place. Everything else in the room looked too expensive to touch.
"You're here!" Aria exclaimed cheerfully as the turtles stepped out of the lift, still busy scanning the room. "I'm so happy you all came!"
Michelangelo sniffed the air and sure enough, the familiar scent of pizza wafted around him. He peeked past his brothers and noticed the spread Aria had set out for them. There was plenty of pizza, as well as ice cream, cake, a chocolate fountain with fruits and pastries, and even a display of pizza gyoza. However, while he wanted to sneak off and eat, Leonardo already had a hold on his belt to keep him still.
"Thank you for inviting us," Leonardo greeted.
"And I hope you don't mind that I tagged along," April added, "I'm with these guys a lot, so I thought it was a good idea to meet you too."
"Oh, it's no trouble. I've always wanted to meet Donatello's family. He's told me so much about all of you. Oh! I-I have gifts!" She announced stiffly, clearly letting her nerves get the better of her. The freckled girl gestured to a pile of presents near a stone pillar and the turtles seemed stunned to silence.
"Um…Aria, this is all very nice, but you didn't have to—" Donatello began.
"—which one is for me?!" Mikey interrupted, jumping for the pile of gifts as he was pushed aside by Raphael so he could get there first. Even Leonardo had rushed to the pile and Donatello watched his brothers rip open several boxes with their names attached.
"…I'm sorry, April. Since I wasn't expecting you until just a moment ago…I couldn't prepare anything for you," Aria apologized as she turned to April.
"You really didn't have to do this…" Donatello tried again, mortified by his brothers behavior while they fought one another to get to the others gifts and hoping that April didn't feel slighted by this.
"I-I know. It's too much, isn't it?" Aria replied meekly, shrinking a bit as she tugged at her sleeve anxiously. "I know it's too much. …I'm…not very good at making friends…" she admitted quietly. "…I just…I want your brothers to like me…" she whispered finally.
Donatello regretted his words quickly. Aria appeared genuinely worried. "Just um…don't worry about getting my brothers to like you," he added with a smile. "They just wanted to talk with you tonight."
Aria nodded her head, trying to look brave, but obviously still nervous. "…but does that mean you'll not want your gifts as well?"
Of course Donatello was curious about what she might have gotten him, but after what he'd just said, wouldn't it seem greedy? It wasn't just Aria who was trying to make a good impression. "Um, well, I didn't come here for that sort of thing," replied Donatello after clearing his throat.
"It's the first issue of Space Heroes, near mint condition!" Shouted Leonardo, holding up the encased comic book with pride.
Donatello cleared his throat even louder, forcing Leonardo back to his senses. The turtles leader was embarrassed for getting carried away, but he didn't release his grip on the comic as he left the present pile.
"Heh, it's a truly thoughtful gift," Leonardo bowed in thanks. Knowing full well he shouldn't accept it, but reluctant to let it go.
"Feel free to eat anything you like, I can have the gifts brought down to your car," suggested Aria. "I also have video games in the next room and there's a pool or the jacuzzi. Um, if there's anything else you might want to do, don't hesitate to ask."
"YES. Thank you, my new favorite sister-in-law!" Mikey shouted before Donatello or Leonardo could answer.
April crossed her arms over her chest with a frown. The guys already seemed bought over, but she refused to be distracted by shiny toys. "They're not even dating, Mikey."
"We-we really just came to talk…!" Donatello insisted in a panic. Worried that his brothers would embarrass him by getting carried away again.
Lawrence stepped beside Aria and pat her shoulder, "Miss, it's okay. Try to relax."
Aria looked troubled for a moment, but she nodded her head and turned back to Donatello. "You're right. Let's…get to know one another a little better. Why don't we all sit down?"
Leonardo grabbed Mikey and forced a smile, "that would be nice, thank you."
"This way, Donatello," Aria insisted happily, stepping forward and taking his hand, gently pulling him towards the large, circular couch that sat in front of the fire place.
Donatello was still a bit nervous with how openly affectionate Aria was, but he allowed her to pull him along and he sat himself down, waiting for his brothers to do the same. However, it was still a little embarrassing since Aria set herself right next to him. He couldn't help noticing the ever present frown on Aprils face. She was quiet most of the time, but when she did speak, there was a bite to her tone.
Once they were all seated, Leonardo cleared his throat and once again tried to look as polite as possible. "So, Aria…clearly…your family is…um…" he fumbled with his words, trying to figure out how to ask her these things without sounding rude.
"My family has a lot of money, yes…" Aria answered without waiting for him to finish. "…I hope that doesn't make you all feel uncomfortable. I never planned to hide it. It's just…awkward to announce I suppose."
Raphael scoffed, "ah, we don't care about money or nothin'. Mikey just gets overly excited."
"Though I guess it comes in handy, you know, when you're trying to impress someone," April added.
Aria smiled at April, "as long as I can make Donatello happy, it doesn't matter how much, or how little I spend."
The turtles felt a chill in the air. Even though April and Aria were speaking pleasantly, it felt like the calm before a storm.
April smiled back, "I'm so curious how someone like you would meet Donatello in the first place. After all, why would an heiress spend her time in a sewer?"
Donatello flinched a bit over Aprils question. Once again, she was reminding him that a mutant had no business being around someone like Aria. Surely she didn't mean it to hurt him, but the bite in Aprils voice was hard to miss.
"I'm sorry, but that's a private matter, between Donatello and myself," Aria answered while fiddling with the star charm that hung from her wrist.
"But Donatello doesn't even remember meeting you. Could it be that you got confused? I mean, maybe he saved you and you just…imagined meeting him before? Any psychiatrist would tell you that it's pretty common for false memories to seem real."
Though his brothers froze, Donatello couldn't handle what April was clearly trying to do. He shot up up from his seat, alarming everyone into silence as they stared up at him. He never wanted to upset April, but he couldn't let her interrogate Aria like a criminal based on articles online, written by people who didn't even know her. "She—she didn't imagine anything," he insisted, fumbling on his words at first. Donatello pulled the twin star charm bracelet from his belt pocket and held it out to show April.
Aria quickly got to her feet and leapt up to wrap her arms around Donatellos shoulders. "Oh, I knew you kept it! I was so worried you tossed it away because you were angry with me!"
The pain of guilt stabbed into his chest as Aria nearly teared up upon seeing the trinket. "Wait. Angry with you? Why would I be angry with you?"
"For not coming back for you right away…" Aria answered sadly as she pulled back to lower her head in shame. "We each made so many promises and I worried you were angry that I didn't keep mine."
"U-um…I still don't remember any promi—"
"—-but I'm back now and you still have the bracelet! We can keep every promise we made and I'll make up for all the time we missed. I promise! I bought this place so that you—"
Donatello was so embarrassed as Aria continued excitedly. Once again, her high energy threw him off and made him feel awkward. He could see his brothers watching eagerly from the corner of his eye and Donatello panicked. He clamped his hand over Aria's mouth to stop her and he immediately froze over his rude behavior. "Ah," he exclaimed as the turtle quickly scrambled back and held his hands up at the line of his shoulders. "I-I'm sorry! I just—um—you got a little…"
"Over excited?" She finished for him with a bashful smile. "…I'm sorry. I just…was so happy that you didn't resent me for not finding you sooner…"
"Aria…you know I still don't remember any of this…" Donatello reminded her sadly. He felt guilty every time she mentioned it or thought something was coming back to him.
The smiled slowly faded from Arias face when she took in Donatellos words. "Yes…of course. I'm sorry. …I…I guess I just assumed…with the bracelet and all…" her voice trailed off and after a moment of silence, Aria plastered on another smile. "Wh-why don't we go on and eat? Michelangelo looks awfully hungry."
"It's true! I'm wasting away…" Mikey groaned, glancing at Leonardo with a pleading expression.
Leonardo sighed, "you're not dying, Mikey, but you can go eat since Aria said it's okay."
Mikey pumped his fist into the air before he jumped off the couch and back towards the buffet. Leonardo glanced at Raphael and tilted his head to the side a bit, silently telling his brother to follow. Raphael nodded and rose from the couch with Leonardo to go after Mikey. Each one seemed to understand that perhaps Donatello and Aria needed a moment alone.
