Chapter Seven Dionysus Wine Celebration
There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house Dionysus and Maia were having wine at.
''Have you any more food down donmy'' added Dionysus ''any spoilt gods and goddesses i love gods don't you''
''i'm sure he's hoarding them'' said Maia
a young man name Luther was sitting cushion them fast asleep and the other two were using it as aresting their elbows on it and the talking over it's head the cushions was a large two but the three all crowded together at two corner of it.
''excuse us can we joined'' Lily said asked to joined
''No room! there no room!'' they cried out when they saw Lily and Jesus coming
''there's plenty of room'' said Jesus indigently
''Why didn't you report this sooner'' said Dionysus ''i overslept''
''why're you two here'' said Maia asked
''well we been looking for the garden'' added Lily ''and now we tired and hungry''
Lily and Jesus sat down on a cushions
''have some wine'' Maia said in an encouraging tore
Lily and Jesus looked all round but there was nothing on it but wine ''we don't see any wine we too young'' she remarked
''there isn't any'' said Maia
''your hair was cutting'' said Dionysus he had been looking at Lily and Jesus for sometime with great curiosity and this was his first speech
''You should learn not to make personal remarks'' Lily said with some severity ''it really rude''
Dionysus opened his eyes very wide on hearing this but all he said was ''Why the raven like a writing desk''
''I'm glad they've begun asking riddles i believe we can guess that'' Lily added smile aloud
''do you mean that you think you can find out the answers to it'' said Maia
''exactly so'' said Lily
''then you should say what you'' said Maia went on
''we do'' Jesus hastily replied ''at least we mean what we say that's the same thing you know''
''Not the same thing a bit'' said Dionysus ''you might just as well say that i see what i eat is same thing i eat what i see!''
''you might just as well say'' added Luther who seemed to be talking in his sleep ''that i breathe when i sleep'' is the same thing as ''i sleep when i breathe!''
''is it the same thing with you'' said Dionysus and here conversation dropped
and the celebration sat silent for a minute while Lily and Jesus thought over all could remember about ravens and whiting desks which wash much Dionysus was the first to beak the silence
''what day of the month is it'' he said turning to Lily and Jesus he had taken his watch out of his roman clothes pocket and was looking at it wheasily shaking it every now and then and holding in to his ear
Lily considered a little and then said ''the fourth''
''two day wrong'' sighed Dionysus
''oh give that watch'' said Maia
''oh you give me a watch'' added Dionysus
''i told you butter wouldn't suit the works'' she added looking angrily at Maia
''It was the best butter'' Maia a meekly replied
''Yes but some crumbs must have got in as well'' Dionysus grumbled
''you shouldn't have put it in with bread knife'' Maia took the watch and looked at it gloomily then she dipped it into his cup of wine could think of nothing butter to say than his first remark ''it was the best butter you know''
Lily had been looking over his shoulder with some curiosity ''it tells the day of month and doesn't tell what o'clock it is!''
''why should it'' muttered Dionysus ''does your watch tell you what year it is''
''it first century A.D of course'' Jesus replied very readily ''but that's because it stays the same year for such a long time together!''
''Luther is as sleep again'' said Dionysus and he powred a little cold wine its nose
Luther shook its head impatiently and said without opening its eyes ''of course! of course! just what i was going to remark myself''
''perhaps!'' Jesus cautiously replied
''but we know we have to beat time when we learn muse well'' said Dionysus ''it was at great concert given by the empress of gods! quick stop him he's going to sing...too late thank you ladies and gentlemen how terribly sweet of you-and how for a little encore i,d like a song entitled auntie wooer leg Maia if you please''
Maia and Dionysus start lyre and sing
Dionysus: ''Oh auntie wooer leg auntie
We'll paint it red and call it fred or hed or ted
Dionysus and Luther: ''Auntie wooer leg auntie wooer leg''
Dionysus: ''everybody said it was well and truly dead oh auntie wooer leg''
Maia: ''I say i say i say''
Dionysus: ''How dare you interrupt my song with''
Maia: ''I say i say i say i say i say i say in this world it's not what you know''
Dionysus: ''I don't know either one of them kindly leave the stage by red door
There a fifty foot drop on the other side but we're still good friend''
Luther: ''Donn!''
Dionysus: ''Auntie wooer leg-''
he falling down down and broom and hit he get up and last sing auntie wooer leg
''Auntie wooer leg auntie wooer leg that enough added Dionysus shook his head mournfully ''we quarreled last Maia-just before he went smile you-it was at the great concert given by the empress and i had to sing''
Dionysus: ''Twinkle twinkle little bat
How i wonder what you're at
Up above the world you fly
like a god-tray in the sky
Twinkle twinkle little twinkle you don't speak but you will
Twinkle twinkle twinkle twinkle little bees
Twinkle twinkle i glad it is't me...
''lovely isn't it could'' said Maia
''almost pass for sing'' said Dionysus
here Luther shook itself and began singing in its sleep ''Twinkle twinkle twinkle-''and went so long
that they had to pinch it to make it stop
''how beautiful voice'' said Lily smiled
''thank you'' said Dionysus ''well i.d hardly finished the first verse when the empress jump up bawlesd out he murdering the time off with head!''
''how dreadfully savage!'' exclaimed Lily
''and ever sine that'' Dionysus went on in a mournful tone ''he won't do a thing i ask it's always six o'clock how then Luther shall!''
they both cried ''wake up Luther'' and they pinched it both sides at once
Luther slowly opened his eyes ''i wash as sleep'' he said in a hoarse feeble voice ''i every word you fellow were saying''
''tell us a story'!'' said Maia
''yes please do!'' pleased Lily and Jesus
''and be quick about it'' added Dionysus ''or you'll be asleep again before it's done''
''Once upon a time there were three brothers'' Luther began in a great hurry ''and they names David, Joshua and Abel and they lied at the bottom of well-''
''what did they live on'' said Jesus
who always took a great interest in questions of eating and drinking
''they lied on treacle said Luther after thinking a minute or two
''they couldn't have done that you know'' Lily gently remarked ''they'd have been so ill''
''so they were very ill'' said Luther
Lily and Jesus tried to fancy to self such an extraordinary ways of living would be like but it puzzled too much went on ''but why did they live at the bottom of a well''
''take some more wine'' Maia said to Lily and Jesus very earnestly
''we had nothing yet'' Lily replied in an offended tone ''so we can't take more''
''you mean you can't take less'' said Dionysus ''it very easy to take more than nothing''
''nobody asked you'' said Lily
''who's making personal remarks now'' Dionysus asked triumphantly
Lily and Jesus did quite know what to say to this so helped self to some wine and bread and butter and then turned to Luther and repeated Lily and Jesus question
''why did they live at the bottom of a well'' Luther again took a minute or two to think about it and then said ''it was a treacle well''
''there's no such thing!'' Lily and Jesus was beginning very happy but Dionysus and Maia went
''Sh! sh!''
and Luther sulkily he marked ''if you can't be you'd better finish story for yourself''
''please go on!'' Jesus said very humbly and happy
''one indeed!'' said Luther indignantly however he consented to go on ''and so these three brothers they were learning to draw you know-''
''why did they draw'' said Lily quite forgetting her promise
''treacle'' said Luther without considering at all this time
''Clean Cup'' interrupted Dionysus ''let's move all one place on'' he moved on as he spoke and Luther followed him
Maia moved into Luther place and Lily and Jesus rather unwillingly took the place of Maia Dionysus was the only one who got any advantage from the change
Luther had closed its eyes by this time and was going off into a doze but on being by Dionysus it woke up again with a little shriek and went on
''that begins with an m such as the moon memory and muchness you know you say things are''
''really how you ask us'' said Lily very much confused
''we think then you shouldn't talk'' said Dionysus this piece of rudeness was more
then Lily and Jesus could bear they got up in great ''sorry guys'' said Jesus ''it getting storm''
Lily for got kissed to Dionysus and Luther and say good bye and walked picked way through the wood
''it's the lovely wine celebration we ever was at in all our life!''
''Yes Lily'' said Jesus to smiled
noticed that one of the trees had door leading right into it ''that's curious'' she though ''we think we may as well go in at once''
and in she went once more they found self in long hall and close to the glass table and taking the little key and unlocking the door it was looking glass Lily one hand
''Jesus'' added Lily ''take my hand''
so Lily and Jesus take hands and melt a way in looking glass they found self at last
''at last'' said Lily smiled found garden ''the perfect place to hide
in the beautiful garden among the bright flowers beds and cool fountains
