Chapter 7
(Christmas Break)
Harley's POV:
Thursday…
Pony and I had convinced the gang to go home before we did since they needed to work and we had to finish our shifts. They were reluctant to go, but we convinced them we could care for ourselves. Luckily, the insurance deal on the car my grandmother had brokered for me replaced my car because the case was closed saying that I was not at fault for the accident. Like there was ever any chance that it wasn't an accident. They still hadn't caught the guy that caused our accident, but I really didn't expect them to. Pony and I were driving home for the holidays and we would get home to Tulsa this evening. I looked over at the passenger seat to see Pony asleep with his head resting on the window and his broken arm resting on a pillow on his lap. It was difficult to drive with a broken arm myself but I could handle it. It wasn't my first rodeo driving with a broken arm. Just then Pony let out a whimper. I propped the steering wheel between my knees to keep it steady and reached over to put a comforting hand on Pony and carded my hand through his hair. "Hey, baby," I whispered. "It's ok, it's just a bad dream." Pony's eyes fluttered open. "What's going on?" Pony mumbled rubbing his eyes wearily. "You were whimpering in your sleep," I said soothingly. "Oh," Pony mumbled, and then his eyes widened when he saw the steering wheel in between my knees. "Hands please," Pony whimpered. I obliged. "Sorry," I said sheepishly. We pulled up to the house.
When Pony and I moved to get the bags out of the car the gang was already swarming us getting the bags for us. Steve grabbed my bag while Darry grabbed Pony's. "Come on, guys," Pony whined. "We aren't useless. We can handle ourselves. We drove here on our own didn't we." Darry shot Pony a glare. "I'm not taking any chances with anything, you here?" Darry said sternly. "Go easy on him Dary," Soda said softly. Darry relaxed a little but still wouldn't let Pony grab his bag. "Come on Steveo," I said annoyed. "Give me my bag." I grabbed for my bag, but Steve lifted it higher over my head. "Not a chance Motorbike," Steve chided. I made a jump to get it but Two-Bit pulled me down. "Chill out grabby," Two-Bit said with a smirk. I glared at him. "Steve will take it to the house and come back," Two-Bit continued. "Fine," I mumbled.
Pony and I trudged into the Curtis house where Lorelai, Evie, Marcia, and Lila were waiting. When they saw Pony and me they hugged us. "How is the physical therapy going?" Lila asked quizzically. "If you guys need any help when you guys are home just let me or Darry know." I smiled at her. "It's going fine," I said. "Thanks for the offer." Lila nodded at me. "Can I get you guys a drink," Lorelai called from the kitchen. "Can you grab Pony and me a coke," I asked. "Sure," Lorelai called back. Pony shot me a glare. "Why can't I have a beer?" Pony whined. I rolled my eyes. "You're not 21," I said with a sigh. "Don't start with me." Pony rolled his eyes. "It's not like I haven't had a beer before," Pony mumbled under his breath. I rolled my eyes. "How is the wedding planning going Evie?" I asked her. Evie's eyes lit up. "I'm so glad you asked Harley," Evie squealed. "I already found the perfect bridesmaid dresses. I just need you to try yours on. Your grandmother is getting them tailored." I gulped but nodded reluctantly. I was afraid to ask what they looked like. "Don't ask," Marcia mouthed at me obviously seeing my face.
Soon enough the guys came back into the room from putting our bags in our rooms. "How are you guys doing?" Soda asked Pony and I wearily. "We're doing fine Soda," Pony said with a sigh. "Just trying to get through all the sore areas." I nodded. "I'm just happy that the insurance company covered a new car," I said with relief. "I'm surprised they did that," Darry said. I rolled my eyes. "Mrs. Adams probably took care of that," Steve said with a chuckle. "What happened with your audition Motorbike?" Two-Bit asked me with a smirk. I groaned. I took out the photos from the audition and showed them. Soda was rolling around on the floor laughing at them. "This is hilarious," Steve said smirking. "I'm glad you find it funny," I said with a groan. "Because you are going to see more of this." Darry gave me a weary look. "What do you mean?" Darry asked. "She got the lead role in the Peter Pan musical," Pony blurted out. Then he clapped his hands to his mouth. The whole gang's mouths hung open. I wanted to melt into the couch. "This is hysterical," Soda said with a laugh. "When is it?" Darry asked. "Over spring break," I mumbled. "Put us down for it," Steve said. "Trust me," I said, "You guys don't want to see that." Two-Bit shook his head. "We wouldn't miss it for the world," Two-Bit said with a chuckle. Ponyboy got up from the couch. "I've got to go make a call," Pony mumbled. I looked after him in concern. "What's that about?" Soda asked. I shrugged. "Beats me," I said. Darry turned back to me. "How is he really doing?" Darry asked. "He's doing ok," I said with a sigh. "He had a nightmare on the way here. I think this whole Manson thing has him a little worked up and skittish." Soda nodded sympathetically. "I'm surprised you haven't said anything about him screaming waking up," Soda said in concern. "It probably helps that we pushed our beds together and have been sleeping together," I deadpanned. "I've been able to calm him down and wake him up before they get too bad." The gang looked at me with their jaws on the floor. "I shouldn't have said that," I mumbled with a blush. "Shouldn't have said what?" Pony asked when he came back into the room. "Nothing," Steve covered. I shot him a grateful look.
Friday…
Pony and I were picking up extra shifts at the Tulsa Public Library while we were home over break and covering for people who were going on vacation. I also covered tutoring for kids who needed to study over break and needed extra help. It was a good influx of cash. After our shifts at the library, Pony said that he had an errand to run and was really skittish about it, which made me nervous. He normally wasn't that evasive with me. But since it was close to the holidays, I knew he probably didn't want to spoil a surprise. I went on my way to do some Christmas shopping. I had to mind my budget because I also had to get something for the girls as well. For Lila, I found a book about the history of physical therapy For Darry, I got him a a weighted blanket and a little journal since he never expresses his feelings very much. For Soda, I got him a box of green tea to hopefully get him off of the coffee that he doesn't need. For Lorelai, I found some brain games. For Two-Bit, I got him a new book of jokes so he can actually find new jokes. For Marcia, I got her a sarcastic Magic 8 Ball. For Steve, I got him a water-resistant tool bag. For Evie, I made her a collage to hang on the wall of photos of her and Steve over the years. For my grandmother, I made a personalized photo album of me, the gang, and her over the last few years and put them all in one album. For Pony, I got him some new track shoes that I've been saving up for. I had also put his drawings on them so that they were more personalized for them and represented him.
When I got back to the Curtis house after hiding the wrapped presents under the bed, Pony, Darry, and Soda were whispering to each other in the kitchen and immediately stopped when I came in. Darry went back to cooking dinner which was some sort of Quiche, which was different. Soda and Pony blushed and pretended to look for something in the fridge. "Did I interrupt something?" I asked. "Uh no," Pony squeaked and ran to the bedroom. I looked after him in confusion but decided to drop it. Soda grabbed a beer from the fridge. "Since when do we eat quiche?" I asked Darry looking over his shoulder. "Since your grandmother gave us a recipe with the groceries and insisted we try making it," Darry said nervously. "Not sure why." I nodded. "Was she over here today?" I asked. "Yep," Soda said. "Why didn't she tell me?" I asked. I was so confused as to why she was there but didn't say anything. "She had a question about a Christmas present for you," Pony said coming out of his room. I nodded, but I felt like he wasn't entirely being truthful.
Saturday….
Today was the day that I had to go try on the bridesmaid dress that Evie had picked up. I was dreading it the whole time during my shift at the library. Pony must have seen my dread. "What's bothering you?" Pony asked me as we were reshelving books. "Trying on the dress that Evie wants me to wear at the wedding," I moaned. Pony chuckled. "You have to show me a picture of you in the dress," Pony said with a smirk. I punched him in the shoulder. "I'm just sure it will be horrible," I moaned. "It probably won't be all bad," Pony said. I glared at him. "We're talking about Evie," I said. Pony thought for a minute. "That's true," Pony said. "That means the dress should be quite something." "How did Evie and Steve even meet?" I asked. "They are the complete opposite of each other." Pony chuckled. "Evie came into the DX to get her car fixed because the other girls said that there was a cute guy at the DX. She didn't know they were talking about Soda, she thought they meant Steve. Steve got a kick out of it, but he didn't plan on actually falling for her." I chuckled. "That's kind of cute," I said. "Don't tell that to Steve though or he'll kill ya," Pony said. I laughed. "That's true," I said with a smirk.
After the shift at the library, I drove over to the local dress shop where Evie had found the bridesmaid dresses that also did alterations. When I got there all the girls and my grandmother were waiting for me. All the other girls had already had their dresses altered because they lived here. My jaw hit the floor when I saw the dresses. They were a solid olive color and had sleeves. They weren't as bad as I thought they were going to be. They were a typical Greaser color. I quickly tried on the dress and had Lorelai quickly sneak a picture of me in it for Pony before Evie noticed. I knew she would probably freak out if she found out I took a photo in the dress. It would be Lorelai's and my little secret.
Christmas…
As usual, I got up early, way earlier than the rest of the guys except for Darry of course. I was going to make my special occasion breakfast of cinnamon rolls, bacon, and eggs. I made my way over to the Curtis house with my presents and ingredients for breakfast where as expected Darry was already up and drinking coffee. "Good morning," I said as I plopped the presents under the tree in the living room. "Good morning early bird partner in crime," Darry said with a smirk. I made my way over to the kitchen to prep the breakfast. I had brought a bottle of Pepsi over with me to get my caffeine kick. "Still haven't adopted coffee yet?" Darry chuckled. I shook my head in disgust and fake gagged. "Coffee is gross," I said. Darry just shook his head and smiled. "Did Pony have any nightmares last night?" I asked Darry as I started smearing the icing onto the cinnamon rolls. "I think he had a little nightmare, but Soda was able to calm him down," Darry said softly. "So how long have you guys been putting your beds together?" I spluttered and felt heat rise to my cheeks. "For about a month," I said sheepishly. "When the Manson stuff started really amping up." Darry nodded. "Just make sure you guys stay safe," Darry said. I blinked at him a couple of times flustered. "We aren't doing that, Dar," I choked out. "But we will." Darry just rolled his eyes at me. "Are the girls joining us for Christmas dinner at my grandmother's house?" I asked. "Yep, they all should be there tonight," Darry said. "How is it going with Lila?" I asked curious. It was Darry's turn to blush. "It's going good," Darry mumbled. "She makes me laugh and takes me out of my comfort zone which is good." I nodded. "That's good to hear," I said.
Soon enough all the guys had gathered into the kitchen for breakfast. Pony kissed me. "Good morning, beautiful," Pony murmured. I kissed Pony back. "Good morning, handsome," I mumbled back. I had developed the photo from the dress fitting a couple of days ago at the library during our shift and I pulled it out of my pocket. "I snuck a photo of me in the bridesmaid dress if you guys want to see it," I said as I plopped the photo down on the table. Steve grabbed the photos first. "Looks like Evie didn't go crazy like I thought she would," Steve said in relief. "You and I were thinking along the same lines," I chuckled. Two-Bit grabbed it next. "Looking good Motorbike," Two-Bit said. I rolled my eyes. Darry just raised his eyebrows at the photo and nodded his approval. Soda just grinned at the photo ear to ear. "I can't wait to see that dress on Lorelai," Soda said. Pony smiled at the photo and gave me a peck on the cheek. "You look beautiful in that dress," Pony said. "Stop lyin'," I said slapping his arm. Pony just chuckled and shook his head. "I'm not," Pony insisted. "Sure," I said rolling my eyes.
After breakfast, we all opened the presents we got for each other. I made sure that the girls had gotten their presents a few days ago. Darry had gotten me a can of pepper spray, which was classic Darry. Always going into protective mode. Soda, Steve, and Two-Bit all chipped in to get me some silver ear cuffs, which was awfully nice of them. Pony got me a new chain for the locket that he got me a couple of years ago for graduation. The guys all liked their gifts, especially Pony. "Did you put my drawings on these shoes?" Pony asked. I nodded. "I hope you like them," I said sheepishly. Pony nodded speechless. "I love them," Pony said. He scooped me up and swung me around with his good arm. We gave each other a big kiss. Steve gagged. "Get a room," Steve said. "Soon we will be saying that to you and Evie," I snapped back. This caused the whole room to erupt in laughter and Steve to blush.
Dinner with my grandmother went well. As usual, my grandmother pampered us with gifts. For Darry, she had got him some things that he would need for PT school when he got his letter and she had gotten in touch with contractors to add a couple of more rooms onto the house so that guests could stay over if needed. For Soda and Steve, my grandmother got them one of those things that they lay back on when fixing cars underneath. For the girls, my grandmother got them new dresses. For Two-Bit, she made sure to get him a case full of pranks so he could practice. We all gave my grandmother a glare for that one. My grandmother got Pony a nice tux for his track banquets at the end of the seasons. For me, my grandmother got me a white tunic dress with sparkly gold tights, matching gold shoes, and a headband. Typical of my grandmother. She loved all the photos as usual. My grandmother had told us that her chemo and radiation treatments were going well and that her doctors were cautiously optimistic. "So did you guys decide on a date for your wedding with the little garden venue that you found?" my grandmother asked Steve and Evie. Evie nodded enthusiastically. "We decided on June 1st," Evie said enthusiastically. We all nodded. Steve looked pained, but we knew he was just in it for the ride and he agreed to the garden venue for Evie. If it was up to Steve they would've probably gotten married at the DX.
New Year's Eve…
Today marked the end of the decade and the start of the 1970s at midnight tonight. My grandmother had asked me to wear the tunic, the sparkly tights, and the gold-colored shoes with the matching headband. I humored my grandmother. I had no idea why she always insisted we dress up, but she never had us dress up this much for New Year's Eve. It was usually just the gang and her for New Year's Eve. I was slightly annoyed, but I would do it for her. Pony was wearing his new tux and he took my breath away in it when I saw him. "You look so handsome in this," I said with my voice catching in my throat. "You look beautiful," Pony whispered back brushing my hair back behind my ear. His hand was shaking. "You ok?" I asked holding his hand steady. Pony nodded and gave me a weak smile. "I'm good," Pony said. "I promise." Something was definitely up, I just couldn't place it. I didn't press though. Darry and Soda pulled Pony off to the side to tell him something. I turned to the Two-Bit and Steve. "What's going on?" I asked them. "Beats me?" Steve said scratching his head. Two-Bit shrugged. "Probably Darry just making sure they behave tonight," Two-Bit said with a smirk. I rolled my eyes at this. "Let's go," Darry said. "The girls are meeting us there." We all hopped in the car and headed off to my grandmother's house.
When we got to the house, it was decorated to the nines. My grandmother had a champagne fountain, silver and gold streamers all over the place, a chocolate fountain, a candy table, and gold and silver balloons in the shape of 1970 hanging in the house. "Grandmother, you went overboard," I said in shock. The rest of the gang's mouths were on the floor. Pony looked like he was going to pass out. My grandmother chuckled. "It's to ring in a new decade my dear," my grandmother said pinching my cheeks. "You didn't need to do this just for us," Pony murmured. "Yes, I did," my grandmother said kissing Pony on the cheek. "I get to celebrate my family." Pony just blushed. There was definitely something going on. Throughout the night we partied and surprisingly Darry let Pony and Soda have some champagne. Pony kind of looked like he needed it if I'm being honest. We watched as the East Coast rang in the new year. It was now a countdown for us in central time to ring in the new year. The new decade couldn't come fast enough. When it was time to ring in the new year everyone kissed at midnight. When I turned towards Pony, he was down on one knee and was holding out a box with a ring in it. I was shocked speechless and I felt my mouth hanging open. I felt everyone's eyes turn toward us. "Harley Cooper," Pony stuttered. "I've had the pleasure of getting to know you these past few years and you have brought me loads of light into my life. When you came into my life, I was still in a rut, but you helped me get out. We both helped each other get out of a rut. We might've gotten away from each other along the way, but we made it back to each other. I couldn't imagine spending my life without you. Will you Harley Cooper, give me the pleasure of marrying me, being my wife, and spending the rest of our lives together?" I felt tears streaming down my face. I knew something was going on, but I didn't expect this. I didn't see this coming in a million years. "I love you Ponyboy Michael Curtis," I said softly. "My answer is yes," I sobbed. I flung myself into his arms. "Let me put this ring on first," Pony chuckled through tears. It was a silver ring that had vine-looking detail around the band and a beautiful diamond in the center. Pony slid it onto my finger and then we gave each other a big kiss. I heard the gang just cheer us on. I would normally be embarrassed but I didn't care. All I could do was focus on Pony. This was going to be a good decade. I knew it.
When we got back to the house, I pulled Pony aside and gave him a big kiss. I looked back down at the ring. "Do you like it?" Pony asked nervously. I looked at him in surprise. I put my hand up to his cheek and stroked it. "I love it," I said softly. "I promise I do. How did you afford it though, it must have cost a fortune." Pony blushed. "Your grandmother helped," Pony muttered. "She insisted that she help cover something that I thought would reflect us the best. She wouldn't take no as an answer or my offer to pay her back." I nodded. "That sounds like her all right," I chuckled. "I think it reflects us perfectly." Ponyboy kissed me on the cheek. "I'm glad you love it," Pony murmured. "I love you Pony," I said. "I love you Harley," Pony whispered back.
Saturday before school starts…
Pony and I had gotten our casts off of our arms during the break and Pony and I got engagement photos. Lorelai had taken our photos during the proposal with my camera, which I was grateful for. Today was the day that Pony and I were heading back to school. This time, I had something else to look forward to besides a new story. Wedding planning with my new fiancee. The guys were just saying goodbye to us this time. "Stay safe you here," Darry said hugging both Pony and me. "We'll try Dar," I said. "Can't promise too much because LA is crazy." Darry rolled his eyes. "We'll be fine," I insisted. "Before you say anything else, I know, no canoodling." Darry and Pony blushed. But, Steve, Soda, and Two-Bit both laughed. "I like to see that I'm rubbing off on you finally," Two-Bit said with a laugh. He hugged both Pony and I. Steve slugged Pony in the arm as a goodbye. "So I was right," Steve said with a grin. "You'll be the next one to get married." Pony blushed. "When did you make that bet?" I asked. "Thanksgiving break," Soda said with a grin. "Of course," I said with a moan. Soda gave Pony and me a hug. "I'm really looking forward to having you as a sister officially," Soda whispered. "You were always like a sister to us, but now it will be official soon." I nodded. "I'm looking forward to it too," I said. Pony grabbed my hand and led me to the car. "Ready to head back to school fiancee?" Pony asked me. I nodded. "Ready as ever," I said smiling at him.
Pony's POV:
Thursday…
I was so relieved when Harley and I got the gang to go ahead of us and leave us alone for a few days so we could rest in quiet. It was good to have some alone time with Harley. We hadn't moved our beds apart since Thanksgiving break and it was good to have them together for the nights we spent at the apartment before going back to Tulsa. The person that had the most resistance to leaving was Darry, but he finally relented. Harley and I were driving home for the holidays and we would get home to Tulsa this evening. Harley and I had been switching places back and forth behind the wheel. We decided to go straight through to Tulsa without stopping. Harley was finishing the trip and I had fallen asleep. The next thing I knew I was woken up by Harley carding her hand through my hair and whispering to me. "Hey, baby," Harley whispered. "It's ok, it's just a bad dream." My eyes fluttered open. "What's going on?" I mumbled rubbing my eyes wearily. "You were whimpering in your sleep," Harley said soothingly. "Oh," I mumbled. I couldn't even remember what I had been dreaming about. My best guess is it had something to do with the Manson incident at the ranch or the guy who ran into us. When I fully woke up I noticed that the only thing holding the wheel steady were Harley's knees. I felt sick to my stomach. "Hands please," I whimpered. Harley obliged. She looked guilty. "Sorry," Harley said sheepishly. We pulled up to the house.
When Harley and I moved to get the bags out of the car the gang was already swarming us getting the bags for us. Steve grabbed Harley's bag while Darry grabbed mine. "Come on, guys," I whined. "We aren't useless. We can handle ourselves. We drove here on our own didn't we." Darry shot me a glare and I rolled my eyes. "I'm not taking any chances with anything, you here?" Darry said sternly. "Go easy on him Dary," Soda said softly. Darry relaxed a little but still wouldn't let me grab my bag no matter how many times I tried to wrestle it out of his hands. "Come on Steveo," Harley said annoyed. "Give me my bag." I looked over to see Harley trying to get her bag back from Steve who was holding it over her head and smirking. "Not a chance Motorbike," Steve chided. Harley made another go at the bag but Two-Bit prevented her. I chuckled. This whole thing was hilarious to watch. "Chill out grabby," Two-Bit said with a smirk. Harley glared at him. "Steve will take it to the house and come back," Two-Bit continued. "Fine," Harley mumbled.
Harley and I trudged into the house where Lorelai, Evie, Marcia, and Lila were waiting. When they saw Harley and me they hugged us. "How is the physical therapy going?" Lila asked quizzically. "If you guys need any help when you guys are home just let me or Darry know." She was really too sweet. Darry hit the jackpot. "It's going fine," Harley said. "Thanks for the offer." Lila nodded at us. "Can I get you guys a drink," Lorelai called from the kitchen. "Can you grab Pony and me a coke," Harley asked. "Sure," Lorelai called back. I shot her a glare. I was a big boy, I could drink a beer. I didn't need a babysitter. But I knew she meant well. "Why can't I have a beer?" I whined. Harley rolled her eyes and let out a little chuckle. "You're not 21," Harley said with a sigh. "Don't start with me." I rolled my eyes. Like I haven't had a beer before, it was a right of passage to have a beer before you were 21 on this side of the tracks. "It's not like I haven't had a beer before," I mumbled under my breath. "How is the wedding planning going Evie?" Harley asked her. Evie's eyes lit up. "I'm so glad you asked Harley," Evie squealed. "I already found the perfect bridesmaid dresses. I just need you to try yours on. Your grandmother is getting them tailored." Harley gulped but nodded reluctantly. This made me stifle a laugh as Marcia mouthed something to Harley. Harley was in for a wild ride with Evie. She was a piece of work. But she was a perfect fit for Steve.
Soon enough the guys came back into the room from putting our bags in our rooms. "How are you guys doing?" Soda asked Harley and me wearily. "We're doing fine Soda," I said with a sigh. "Just trying to get through all the sore areas." Harley nodded. "I'm just happy that the insurance company covered a new car," Harley said with relief. "I'm surprised they did that," Darry said. Harley rolled her eyes. "Mrs. Adams probably took care of that," Steve said with a chuckle. "What happened with your audition Motorbike?" Two-Bit asked Harley with a smirk. Harley groaned while I chuckled. The guys wouldn't be able to let up when she told them she got the lead role in the musical. Harley took out the photos from the audition and showed them. Soda was rolling around on the floor laughing at them. "This is hilarious," Steve said smirking. "I'm glad you find it funny," Harley said with a groan. "Because you are going to see more of this." Darry gave Harley a weary look. "What do you mean?" Darry asked. "She got the lead role in the Peter Pan musical," I blurted out. Then I clapped my hands to my mouth. I couldn't help myself. But I knew I was in for it with Harley. She was going to kill me. I knew it The whole gang's mouths hung open. Harley looked absolutely mortified. "This is hysterical," Soda said with a laugh. "When is it?" Darry asked. "Over spring break," Harley mumbled. "Put us down for it," Steve said. "Trust me," Harley said, "You guys don't want to see that." Two-Bit shook his head. "We wouldn't miss it for the world," Two-Bit said with a chuckle. I got up from the couch. "I've got to go make a call," I mumbled.
I needed to call Mrs. Adams to find the perfect ring for Harley to propose on New Year's Eve. I hoped she would be free tomorrow. "This is the Adams household," I heard Mrs. Adams answer. "Hi Mrs. Adams," I said quietly. "It's Ponyboy." "It's good to hear from you," Mrs. Adams said. "How are you feeling?" I let out a sigh. Here we go with the questions. "I'm doing good, I'm just ready to get this cast off of my arm," I said. Mrs. Adams chuckled. "I bet you are," Mrs. Adams said. "I guess that you are calling because you want help to go ring shopping and where to start." I chuckled. "You know me," I said sheepishly. "I would love it if you could help me out." I could practically hear Mrs. Adams' happiness through the phone. "I can't wait," Mrs. Adams said. "Why don't you meet me after work at a small jewelry store that I found? It's on the West side, but it's quaint and it has some gorgeous rings." I gulped. Hopefully, this won't be too expensive. "Sounds great," I said. I hung up and went back to the living room and I immediately missed something because Harley said she shouldn't have said something.
"Shouldn't have said what?" I asked when I came back into the room. "Nothing," Steve covered. Harley shot him a grateful look. What the hell was that?
Friday…
Harley and I always made sure we had the same shifts at the library. It made the time go quicker and it made the job more fun. After the shift, I drove off on the moped that we had towed behind us on the way back from LA so we could have two vehicles. I pulled up to a small quaint mom-and-pop jewelry store. It was cute, I'll give Mrs. Adams that. I was just nervous because I knew the rings in this shop were going to be expensive and I couldn't afford it. I didn't understand why Mrs. Adams wanted to go here. Mrs. Adams was waiting for me outside the shop. She gave me a big hug. "I'm so happy you asked me to help you out," Mrs. Adams said cheerily. I blushed. "I'm not really good at picking out jewelry," I murmured. "But this place looks expensive. I can't afford anything expensive." Mrs. Adams's smile faltered a minute. "Don't worry about it," Mrs. Adams said. "I'll cover it. I want all of you guys to have the best you can have. You guys deserve that much, especially after all the things you guys have been through." I opened my mouth to protest. "There is nothing you can do to pay me back," Mrs. Adams said forcefully. "And no, I won't let you." I stuttered, but the words died on my tongue. "Good," Mrs. Adams said. "Now you are going to have to look for something that you think represents you and Harley." I nodded. She had a point. I looked around the shop, but I couldn't find anything. Then my eyes fell onto a silver ring that had vine detailing around the band and a beautiful diamond in the middle. "That one," I said pointing to the ring. Mrs. Adams smiled brightly when she saw it. "It looks beautiful Pony," Mrs. Adams murmured. "What drew your eye to it?" "The vine detailing," I said simply. "It reminds me of flowers growing and Harley and I were growing together," I continued. Mrs. Adams nodded. "Do you know her ring size?" The shop owner asked. I nodded. "At one of the rest stops when Harley was asleep, I took her ring finger measurement," I said sheepishly. Mrs. Adams elbowed me. "Good going, Romeo," Mrs. Adams said. I chuckled. There was the Steve Randall type of humor. The shop owner came back with the ring in the box. "You're such a lucky man," the shop owner said. "This is the exact size for her," she said. I blushed. "Thank you for everything, Mrs. Adams," I said hugging her as we left the store. "How can I ever repay you?" Mrs. Adams brushed the tears from my cheeks while Mrs. Adams had tears streaming down her face as well. "Just take care of her for me," Mrs. Adams whispered. "Be there for her and keep her safe. Love her unconditionally like I know you do and she loves you." I nodded. "I will," I said. "I promise." Before I left, Mrs. Adams told me to remind Darry to make the quiche she gave him a recipe for.
I put the box in my pocket. It came in a silver-colored box that matched the ring. I rode back to the house. To my surprise, Darry and Soda were already at the house. "Hey guys," I said sheepishly. "You're home early." Soda raised an eyebrow at me. "And you're home late," Soda said. "What gives?" I looked at Darry who was cooking dinner and who I was surprised who didn't give me the third degree yet. It looked like I didn't have to remind him to make quiche. "Go on," Darry said. "Answer the question." I groaned. "You're going to find out soon enough so I might as well tell you. But you must not tell Two-Bit and Steve because they'll spill." Darry raised his eyebrows in concern. "What's going on Pon?" Darry asked with a concerned tone. "You're scaring me." I pulled out the box from my pocket and opened it. Soda gasped. Darry went pale. "It's beautiful honey," Soda said with a big grin. "When did you decide to do this?" Darry asked me softly. "I decided during Thanksgiving," I said softly. "When Steve said what he said about me and Harley being next, I knew he was right." Soda shook his head in disbelief and chuckled. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Darry asked. "You're only 18 turning 19 in the summer and Harley is only 19 turning 20 in the spring. That's a little young." I felt my face get hot in anger. "I'm sure Darry," I said angrily. "I thought it through and I even got Mrs. Adam's blessing." Soda rubbed my back to calm me down. "Well I support it," Soda said softly. "You two are good for each other." Soda shot Darry a glare. Darry carded a hand through his hair. "How did you even afford the ring?" Darry asked. "It looks expensive." I sighed. "Mrs. Adams went with me to the ring store and paid for the ring. Before you ask, I tried to stop her and offered to pay her back, but she said no." Darry sighed. "That sounds like her," Darry admitted. Soda chuckled. "Yes it does," Soda said. Soda took the ring out of the box and looked at it. "It's beautiful honey," Soda said. "You did good." I blushed. Darry grabbed it gently from Soda. "It's beautiful," Darry murmured. "Did you pick this out yourself?" I nodded. "I thought it was perfect," I said. "Look, I'm sorry for getting worked up," Darry said handing back the ring. I put it back in the pocket and put it in my coat pocket. "I can tell you both love each other," Darry continued. "I just wanted to make sure you weren't rushing into anything." I nodded. I squeezed his shoulder. "I know," I said. "I understand. Then the door opened and we all jumped apart.
"Did I interrupt something?" Harley asked. That was too close. "Uh no," I squeaked and ran to my bedroom to hide the ring. I quickly hid it in my sock drawer and headed back out to the kitchen where Harley was asking about her grandmother. "She had a question about a Christmas present for you," I said coming out of my room. Harley nodded, but it didn't seem like she bought it. She didn't press and for that I was grateful.
Christmas…
I woke up on Christmas morning to the smell of cinnamon rolls, bacon, and eggs. I knew instantly that was Harley cooking the breakfast. I knew she always loved cooking for special occasions, and Darry was more than happy to let her take over. It was one thing off of his plate. I just hoped that he didn't spill the beans to Harley this morning since he is an early bird himself. I nudged Soda awake and we went out to the kitchen when Steve and Two-Bit stumbled into the house themselves. Harley was just pulling the cinnamon rolls out of the oven and had just finished cooking the bacon and eggs as well. It was perfect timing.
As I headed to the table, I kissed Harley. "Good morning, beautiful," I murmured. Harley kissed me back. "Good morning, handsome," Harley mumbled. My heart fluttered. I couldn't believe that next week I would be proposing to her. The girl of my dreams. The next thing I knew she plopped a photo down on the table. "I snuck a photo of me in the bridesmaid dress if you guys want to see it," Harley said with a smirk. Steve grabbed the photos first. "Looks like Evie didn't go crazy like I thought she would," Steve said in relief. "You and I were thinking along the same lines," Harley chuckled. Two-Bit grabbed it next. "Looking good Motorbike," Two-Bit said. Harley rolled her eyes and I shot him a glare. Two-Bit just wiggled his eyebrows at me. Darry just raised his eyebrows at the photo and nodded his approval. Soda just grinned at the photo ear to ear. "I can't wait to see that dress on Lorelai," Soda said. I smiled at the photo and gave her a peck on the cheek. It didn't look as bad as I expected. She looked beautiful in it, but she could pull off anything. "You look beautiful in that dress," I said. "Stop lyin'," Harley said slapping my arm. I just chuckled and shook my head. "I'm not," I insisted. "Sure," Harley said rolling my eyes.
After breakfast, we all opened the presents we got for each other. I got Harley a new chain for the locket that I got her a couple of years ago for graduation. When I opened my present from her. My heart dropped. They were amazing. They were new track shoes and I recognized the drawings that I had done this past semester sealed into the shoe. I had wondered where they had gone. "Did you put my drawings on these shoes?" I asked. Harley nodded with a big grin on her face, but I could see nervousness in her eyes. "I hope you like them," Harley said sheepishly. I nodded speechless. Why wouldn't she think I would like them? "I love them," I said. I scooped her up and swung her around with my good arm. We gave each other a big kiss. Steve gagged. "Get a room," Steve said. "Soon we will be saying that to you and Evie," Harley snapped back. This caused the whole room to erupt in laughter and Steve to blush. She sure does have a good sense of humor. One of the many things I liked about her.
As usual, during Christmas dinner at Mrs. Adams's, she pampered us with gifts despite everyone's protests. She never listened. I was surprised to see a nice tux from Mrs. Adams. The note on it said it was for the proposal on New Year's Eve and any other special occasions. For Harley, Mrs. Adams got her a white tunic dress with sparkly gold tights, matching gold shoes, and a headband. Mrs. Adams had told us that her chemo and radiation treatments were going well and that her doctors were cautiously optimistic. "So did you guys decide on a date for your wedding with the little garden venue that you found?" Mrs. Adams asked Steve and Evie. Soon enough this would be me and Harley, but she didn't know it yet.
New Year's Eve…
Today marked the end of the decade and the start of the 1970s at midnight tonight. I nervously put on my tux, but I was stumbling with the buttons because my hands were shaking. Soda had to step in to help me. "Ready for the big night?" Soda asked me with a big grin. "As ready as I can be," I said nervously. I patted the pocket that was over my heart that had the box inside it. Darry poked his head into the room and grinned when he saw me and Soda dressed up in our suits. Darry was in a suit as well. Everyone was told to dress up for the party, so Harley and I wouldn't stick out like sore thumbs and tip Harle off to something. For that I was grateful. Darry looked me up and down. "You ready, Little Colt?" Darry asked me. I nodded. Darry pulled Soda me into a hug. "I'm so proud of you Pony," Darry said. "I can't believe my baby brother is getting engaged tonight." I groaned. "She hasn't said yes yet Dar," I said nervously. "She will, don't worry, honey," Soda said soothingly. Soon Harley arrived looking pretty as usual. "You look so handsome in this," Harley said when she saw me. "You look beautiful," I whispered back brushing her hair back behind her ear. My hand was shaking and I couldn't stop it. I was so nervous for tonight. "You ok?" Harley asked holding my hand steady. I nodded and gave her a weak smile. "I'm good," I said. "I promise." Her hand felt good in mine. I couldn't wait to see the ring on her finger. Darry and Soda pulled me off to the side to talk to us. "You ready for tonight?" Darry asked me. I sighed. "I think so," I said nervously. "You've got this," Soda said. I gave him a weary smile.
When we got to the house, it was decorated to the nines. Mrs. Adams had a champagne fountain, silver and gold streamers all over the place, a chocolate fountain, a candy table, and gold and silver balloons in the shape of 1970 hanging in the house. "Grandmother, you went overboard," Harley said in shock. I had to agree with Harley on this one. Her grandmother did go overboard. I guess when she said she wanted to make this night special, she really went all out for it. I felt myself getting nauseous. Mrs. Adams chuckled. "It's to ring in a new decade my dear," Mrs. Adams said pinching her cheeks. "You didn't need to do this just for us," I murmured. "Yes, I did," Mrs. Adams said kissing me on the cheek. I blushed. "I get to celebrate my family." Surprisingly Darry let me have champagne. I guess he thought I needed it to calm my nerves. We watched as the East Coast rang in the new year. It was now a countdown for us in central time to ring in the new year. The new decade couldn't come fast enough. When it was time to ring in the new year everyone kissed at midnight. When everyone was kissing each other, I got down on one knee. When Harley turned to me her jaw hit the floor. I could tell I totally shocked her. That was good news, but now came the hard part. The proposal. I could feel everyone watching us. My hand started to shake and I started to sweat. "Harley Cooper," I stuttered. Harley had tears streaming down her face too. My heart started to race. I hoped I didn't put my heart on the line for nothing and humiliate myself. "I love you Ponyboy Michael Curtis," Harley said softly. "My answer is yes," Harley sobbed and she flung herself into my arms. "Let me put this ring on first," I chuckled through tears. I slid it onto her finger and then we gave each other a big kiss. I heard the gang just cheer us on. I would normally be embarrassed but I didn't care. All I could do was focus on Harley. I was so happy that she said yes. Everything was finally falling into place.
When we got back to the house, Harley pulled me aside and gave me a big kiss. I noticed Harley looking at the ring intently. "Do you like it?" I asked nervously. Harley looked at me in surprise like it was a stupid question, but I had to ask. She put her hand up to my cheek and stroked it. "I love it," Harley said softly. "I promise I do. How did you afford it though, it must have cost a fortune." I blushed. "Your grandmother helped," I muttered. "She insisted that she help cover something that I thought would reflect us the best. She wouldn't take no as an answer or my offer to pay her back." Harley nodded. "That sounds like her all right," Harley chuckled. "I think it reflects us perfectly." I kissed her on the cheek. "I'm glad you love it," I murmured. "I love you Pony," Harley said. "I love you, Harley," I whispered back. My heart started to flutter with happiness.
As I got into bed, Soda pulled me into his arms. "I'm so proud of you baby brother," Soda whispered in my ear. I blushed, but I felt comfort in Soda's embrace and in his words. "You're going to be someone, you're going somewhere, and doing it with the girl you love," Soda continued. "You're going somewhere too," I said softly. "In your own way."
Saturday before school starts…
Harley and I had gotten our casts off of our arms during the break and Harley and I got engagement photos. We took them out by the train tracks. They turned out wonderfully. Harley and I did them in the most Greaser fashion. We wore our typical day-to-day outfits. Flannel with leather jackets, black Converse, and jeans. Lorelai had taken our photos during the proposal with Harley's camera. I was happy that she caught the moment. Today was the day that Harley and I were heading back to school. The guys were just saying goodbye to us this time. "Stay safe you here," Darry said hugging both Harley and me. "We'll try Dar," Harley said. "Can't promise too much because LA is crazy." Darry rolled his eyes. "We'll be fine," Harley insisted. "Before you say anything else, I know, no canoodling." Darry and I blushed. But, Steve, Soda, and Two-Bit both laughed. "I like to see that I'm rubbing off on you finally," Two-Bit said with a laugh. He hugged both Harley and I. Steve slugged me in the arm as a goodbye. "So I was right," Steve said with a grin. "You'll be the next one to get married." I blushed. "When did you make that bet?" Harley asked. "Thanksgiving break," Soda said with a grin. "Of course," Harley said with a moan. Soda gave Harley and me a hug. "I'm really looking forward to having you as a sister officially," Soda whispered. "You were always like a sister to us, but now it will be official soon." Harley nodded. "I'm looking forward to it too," Harley said. I grabbed her hand and led her to the car. "Ready to head back to school fiancee?" I asked Harley. Harley nodded. "Ready as ever," Harley said smiling at me. I was so happy to start this new life.
Darry's POV:
Thursday…
The whole gang with the girls were watching intently for Harley and Pony to pull up in the new car that Harley's insurance coverage paid for because of the wreck and her not being at fault. Pony and Harley had talked us into not staying for the rest of the time at school before they came back for a break. They insisted they needed space. "They'll be fine," Soda tried to tell me reassuringly. "They're tough Greasers," Steve said. "They will get through this fine," Two-Bit said. I let out a sigh of relief when I saw them pull up in the driveway. The first real breath that I had gotten since Sunday. The gang and I ran out the door to help grab the bags so they didn't hurt themselves. At least I wasn't the only one worrying about them. When Harley and Pony moved to get the bags out of the car the gang was already swarming them to get the bags. Steve grabbed Harley's bag while I grabbed Pony's. "Come on, guys," Pony whined. "We aren't useless. We can handle ourselves. We drove here on our own didn't we." I shot him a glare and Pony rolled his eyes. "I'm not taking any chances with anything, you here?" I said sternly. "Go easy on him Dary," Soda said softly. I relaxed a little because I knew he was right but I still wouldn't let Pony grab his bag no matter how many times he tried to wrestle it out of my hands. He was so goddamn stubborn. I rolled my eyes. They really shouldn't be teasing her like this. She could get herself too worked up and reinjure herself "Chill out grabby," Two-Bit said with a smirk. Harley glared at him. "Steve will take it to the house and come back," Two-Bit continued. "Fine," Harley mumbled.
Harley and Pony trudged into the house where Lorelai, Evie, Marcia, and Lila were waiting. Soda and I took Pony's bag to the bedroom and Steve and Two-Bit took Harley's bag to their house across the street. I looked over at Soda. "Do you think Pony is really ok?" I asked Soda nervously. Soda let out a sigh. "I know you're worried Dar," Soda said softly. "I'm worried too, but he is 18 and he can look out after himself. He has Harley looking after him too. They look out for each other. You have to give them breathing room." I sighed because I knew he was right. "I know," I mumbled. "But I can't help it." Soda chuckled. "I know, but you gotta try," Soda said heading back out to the living room.
As we all walked into the living room Soda asked the question that we all had. "How are you guys doing?" Soda asked Harley and Pony wearily. "We're doing fine Soda," Pony said with a sigh. "Just trying to get through all the sore areas." Harley nodded. "I'm just happy that the insurance company covered a new car," Harley said with relief. "I'm surprised they did that," I said. Harley rolled her eyes. "Mrs. Adams probably took care of that," Steve said with a chuckle. "What happened with your audition Motorbike?" Two-Bit asked Harley with a smirk. Harley groaned while Pony chuckled. That's right she had an audition for her theater final and she was all freaked out about it. Harley took out the photos from the audition and showed them. Soda was rolling around on the floor laughing at them. "This is hilarious," Steve said smirking. "I'm glad you find it funny," Harley said with a groan. "Because you are going to see more of this." I gave Harley a weary look. "What do you mean?" I asked. She was making me nervous. Nothing usually got her so worked up. This couldn't be good. "She got the lead role in the Peter Pan musical," Pony blurted out. Then he clapped his hands to his mouth. My jaw hit the floor. This was a shocker. This was the news that I hadn't suspected to ever come out of her mouth. The whole gang's mouths hung open as well. Harley looked absolutely mortified. "This is hysterical," Soda said with a laugh. "When is it?" I asked. I wanted to be as supportive as possible. I could tell she was embarrassed. "Over spring break," Harley mumbled. "Put us down for it," Steve said. "Trust me," Harley said, "You guys don't want to see that." Two-Bit shook his head. "We wouldn't miss it for the world," Two-Bit said with a chuckle. I got up from the couch. "I've got to go make a call," Pony mumbled.
Harley looked after him in concern. "What's that about?" Soda asked. Harley shrugged. "Beats me," I said. I turned back to Harley. "How is he really doing?" I asked. I knew that Pony wouldn't tell me the truth and this was my chance to get it out of Harley. I knew she would tell me the truth when it came to Pony. She cared for him nearly as much as Soda and I did. "He's doing ok," Harley said with a sigh. "He had a nightmare on the way here. I think this whole Manson thing has him a little worked up and skittish." Soda nodded sympathetically. "I'm surprised you haven't said anything about him screaming waking up," Soda said in concern. "It probably helps that we pushed our beds together and have been sleeping together," Harley deadpanned. My heart started to race when he said that. I knew I should've stayed in LA. "I've been able to calm him down and wake him up before they get too bad," Harley continued. What now? Harley's words just rang around in my head. "I shouldn't have said that," Harley mumbled with a blush. "Shouldn't have said what?" Pony asked when he came back into the room. "Nothing," Steve covered. Harley shot him a grateful look.
Friday…
When I got home from work, I was surprised to see that Pony wasn't home yet and that Soda was getting home at the same time that I was. "Where's Two-Bit and Steve?" I asked Soda as we went into the house. "They are going out with Marcia and Evie," Soda said. "Two-Bit was going on a date with Marcia and Steve and Evie were going wedding planning." I shook my head in disbelief. "I still can't get over the fact that Steve was getting married first," I said with a chuckle. "You and me both," Soda said. "Do you know where Harley and Pony are?" I shook my head. "I was about to ask you the same thing," I said. "Maybe they picked up a second shift at the library." Soda shrugged. "Maybe," Soda shrugged. When we got to the kitchen, I noticed a note on the fridge. It was a note from Mrs. Adams, we had given her an extra key to the house. The note was talking about that she left us some groceries, and things to make some quiche with a recipe card. Soda chuckled when he read the note over my shoulder. "Mrs. Adams is really something," Soda said. "That's right," I said. Then I heard the front door open and I saw Pony come in. He looked skittish.
"Hey guys," Pony said sheepishly. "You're home early." Soda raised an eyebrow at Pony. "And you're home late," Soda said. "What gives?" Pony looked at me while I started to cook dinner. I could tell he was surprised that I hadn't yelled at him for being late, and I felt guilty about it. "Go on," I said. "Answer the question." Pony groaned. This better be good if he was this nervous. "You're going to find out soon enough so I might as well tell you. But you must not tell Two-Bit and Steve because they'll spill," Pony said I raised my eyebrows in concern. This can't be good. "What's going on Pon?" I asked with a concerned tone. "You're scaring me." Pony then pulled out a box from his pocket and opened it. Soda gasped. I went pale when I noticed a diamond engagement ring in the box. Oh shit. "It's beautiful honey," Soda said with a big grin. "When did you decide to do this?" I asked Pony softly. I can't believe he didn't tell us he was going out to get a ring. I didn't think was being serious at Thanksgiving. "I decided during Thanksgiving," Pony said softly. "When Steve said what he said about me and Harley being next, I knew he was right." Soda shook his head in disbelief and chuckled. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" I asked. "You're only 18 turning 19 in the summer and Harley is only 19 turning 20 in the spring. That's a little young." Pony's face turned up in anger. Crap, why did I have to say the wrong thing? He's going to run out now! "I'm sure Darry," Pony said angrily. "I thought it through and I even got Mrs. Adam's blessing." Soda rubbed Pony's back to calm him down. "Well I support it," Soda said softly. Of course, Soda has to be the good guy. "You two are good for each other." Soda shot me a glare. I carded a hand through my hair in guilt. "How did you even afford the ring?" I asked. "It looks expensive." Pony sighed. "Mrs. Adams went with me to the ring store and paid for the ring. Before you ask, I tried to stop her and offered to pay her back, but she said no." I sighed. Of course. "That sounds like her," I admitted. Soda chuckled. "Yes it does," Soda said. Soda took the ring out of the box and looked at it. "It's beautiful honey," Soda said. "You did good." Pony blushed in embarrassment. I grabbed it gently from Soda. It was a silver ring with vine detailing and a diamond in the center. "It's beautiful," I murmured. "Did you pick this out yourself?" Pony nodded. "I thought it was perfect," Pony said. "Look, I'm sorry for getting worked up," I said handing back the ring. "I can tell you both love each other. I just wanted to make sure you weren't rushing into anything." Pony nodded and squeezed my shoulder reassuringly. "I know," Pony said. "I understand. Then the door opened and we all jumped apart.
"Did I interrupt something?" Harley asked. That was too close. "Uh no," Pony squeaked and ran to the bedroom to hide the ring.
Christmas…
I was already up early Christmas morning when Harley walked into the door, just like clockwork. I just had to keep my mouth shut. "Good morning," Harley said as she plopped the presents under the tree in the living room. "Good morning early bird partner in crime," I said with a smirk. Harley made her way over to the kitchen to prep the breakfast. I saw her put a bottle of Pepsi on the counter. "Still haven't adopted coffee yet?" I chuckled. Harley shook her head in disgust and fake gagged. "Coffee is gross," Harley said. I just shook my head and smiled. "Did Pony have any nightmares last night?" Harley asked me. "I think he had a little nightmare, but Soda was able to calm him down," I said softly. "So how long have you guys been putting your beds together?" Harley spluttered and blushed. I obviously hit a nerve. "For about a month," Harley said sheepishly. "When the Manson stuff started really amping up." I nodded. "Just make sure you guys stay safe," I said. Harley appeared flustered. "We aren't doing that, Dar," Harley choked out. "But we will." I just rolled my eyes at her. "Are the girls joining us for Christmas dinner at my grandmother's house?" Harley asked. "Yep, they all should be there tonight," I said. "How is it going with Lila?" Harley asked curiously. I blushed. "It's going good," I mumbled. "She makes me laugh and takes me out of my comfort zone which is good." Harley nodded. "That's good to hear," Harley said.
The rest of Christmas went smoothly. Everyone got good presents that were sentimental to each other. As usual, Mrs. Adams went overboard as usual, but I could tell from the gifts that she had something up her sleeve for later.
New Year's Eve…
Tonight was Pony's big night. He would pop the big question to Harley tonight. I knew he was a nervous wreck and I was nervous for him too. I knew Soda was going to be happy and bouncing off the wall. I poked my head into the room and grinned when I saw Pony and Soda dressed up in their suits. I had a navy suit on, while Pony had the new black tux on, and Soda had a maroon suit on. I gave Pony a once over. He looked good. Like a little gentleman. "You ready, Little Colt?" I asked Pony. Pony nodded. I pulled Soda and Pony into a hug. "I'm so proud of you Pony," I said. "I can't believe my baby brother is getting engaged tonight." Pony groaned. "She hasn't said yes yet Dar," Pony said nervously. "She will, don't worry, honey," Soda said soothingly. I watched as Pony and Harley were falling all over each other and Pony was fumbling all over himself. I knew he was going to be ok though. I could tell just by watching them that Harley and Pony loved each other a lot. I pulled Soda and Pony off to the side to talk to them before the party and to give Pony some reassurance. "You ready for tonight?" I asked Pony. Pony sighed. "I think so," Pony said nervously. "You've got this," Soda said. Pony gave him a weary smile.
Pony looked like he was going to pass out. The decorations were completely overboard and audacious. Mrs. Adams chuckled. "It's to ring in a new decade my dear," Mrs. Adams said pinching Harley's cheeks. "You didn't need to do this just for us," Pony murmured. "Yes, I did," Mrs. Adams said kissing Pony on the cheek. Pony blushed. "I get to celebrate my family." I reluctantly allowed Pony and Soda to have champagne. Pony was obviously nervous and he needed to have a calm head before he proposed. We watched as the East Coast rang in the new year. It was now a countdown for us in central time to ring in the new year. The new decade couldn't come fast enough. When it was time to ring in the new year everyone kissed at midnight. I leaned down and kissed Lila. The rest of the gang didn't know that Pony was going to propose to Harley. They were all in for a treat. When I turned back to Pony and Harley, Pony was already down on one knee. When everyone noticed. Their jaws hit the floor, but not mine Soda's, and Mrs. Adams's. We all grinned stupidly. I also felt nervous for Pony. Lorelai slowly grabbed Harley's camera out of her bag and started taking photos. I was grateful for that. We would love these later. When Harley turned to face Pony her jaw hit the floor. Score 1 for Pony! I could see Pony's hand start to shake. I squeezed Lila's hand in nervousness. She gave my hand a reassuring squeeze back.
Everyone had tears streaming down her face, even Two-Bit and Steve did. "I love you Ponyboy Michael Curtis," Harley said softly. "My answer is yes," Harley sobbed and she flung herself into Pony's arms. I let out a sigh of relief. "Let me put this ring on first," Pony chuckled through tears. Pony slid it onto her finger and then they gave each other a big kiss. The whole gang cheered for them. My heart swelled with happiness for them. My little brother was going to get married.
When we got back to the house the gang pulled us aside as Harley and Pony whispered sweet nothings in their ears outside. "Did you guys know this was going to happen?" Two-Bit asked Soda and me. Soda and I both nodded. Two-Bit slugged me in the shoulder. "I knew they would be the next ones to get married," Steve said with a grin. We all cheered to Harley and Pony.
Saturday before school starts…
Today Pony and Harley were heading back to school, and this was the last semester of my undergraduate degree. I knew that my acceptance letter for my PT program should be here in the next few weeks because the program starts in the summer. I was nervous to see them off today. As I watched them drive off this morning, I couldn't help but feel nervous about the semester to come. This is when the bad things start to happen in Harley's stories.
