Chapter 15

The elevator pinged in their ears, and Ash, Gary, and Falkner stepped out onto the Violet Gym arena. Like the day before, the sun was shining brightly in the sky, leading the way for an excellent Gym battle in an arena that was held on the roof.

Since Falkner had been made aware of this challenge yesterday, his students were already up on the roof, waiting for the Gym match to start. Ash was practically shivering with excitement – it had been so long since he had battled in an official Gym match, and while he was annoyed at the fact that Gary had battled first, he had the advantage. He knew the Pokémon and strategies that Falkner would use, and Ash had plans to counter them.

A smirk of confidence pulled the corners of his lips up as he took his side of the arena opposite Falkner. The Violet City Gym Leader also seemed to be confident, and with powerful Pokémon at his disposal, his confidence wasn't without reason. Now it was a matter of who would prevail.

"The official Johto League battle between Ash, the challenger from Pallet Town, and Falkner, the Violet Gym Leader, will now begin. At stake is the Zephyr Badge!" the referee announced. "Each will use three Pokémon! Begin the match when ready."

"I'm ready!" Ash said with a smirk, and then pointed forward. "And you better be ready too – ready to hand me over a Badge!"

"I wouldn't count on that, my friend," Falkner sent back. "There's a reason I'm the Violet City Gym Leader. You've seen what my Flying Pokémon can do, but now you're gonna see what they do to you!" He retrieved a Poké Ball from his robe and threw it forward. The ball burst open, and the light came together to form into Falkner's Dodrio, and the three heads let out a squawk as it appeared and its feet tapped against the ground of the arena.

"That's no surprise," Ash muttered. "But I have a surprise for him." Taking out his own Poké Ball, he threw it out onto the stadium. "I choose you! Chikorita!"

"Chika!" the Leaf Pokémon cried as it appeared, and then when it landed, it trotted over to Ash's pant leg and rubbed against it affectionately. Ash looked down and let out a small, nervous chuckle.

"Don't embarrass me..."

"Bad choice," Falkner spoke up, and both Ash and Chikorita looked at him. "I thought you of all people would have known that Grass Pokémon are weak against Flying Pokémon. How could you forget that if you have a Pidgeotto?"

Ash took a step back and furrowed his eyebrows together. "Yeah? Well I thought you of all people would have known that you don't always judge by type!"

"Chika!" his Chikorita added with a crack. This seemed to anger the small Grass-type, and got it focused on the match, and it rushed forward in front of its Trainer.

"Begin!" the referee called, and the beat of the large taiko drum behind him signified the start of the match.

"Well, if you know so much, you make the first move," Falkner said with a confident hand resting on his hip.

"Okay!" Ash agreed, and looked down at his Pokémon. "Chikorita, Vine Whip!"

"Chika!" it responded, and two of the buds around its neck stretched out and snaked across the field at Dodrio.

"Dodrio, fly away," Falkner told it without a hint of worry on his face. The Triple Bird Pokémon let out a squawk and jumped high into the air. "Now Dodrio, dive down and use your Tri Attack!" As the Normal and Flying Pokémon began its descent, its three heads moved so each beak was at the point of a triangle, and it opened its beaks. Three orbs of light formed in between each one – two red and one green – and a shimmering red triangle formed between the three orbs.

"Chikorita, we're gonna take a page out of Gary's book! Jump to the right!" Ash ordered with a wave of his arm. Chikorita let out a cry and leapt its small body in the direction its Trainer called. "Now aim a Razor Leaf right where Dodrio is going to land!" Once the Grass Pokémon landed out of harm's way, it swung its head, and a barrage of leaves came flying out of the large leaf atop its head. With no target, Dodrio never fired the Tri Attack, but the attack was broken when it landed and the leaves sliced at Dodrio's feet and ankles. Without any chance to gain its bearing, Dodrio fell forward, and the Tri Attack shattered in its face like glass.

"If you think that's all it's gonna take to beat my Dodrio, you're sadly mistaken!" Falkner smirked, and then his face turned cold and he clenched his fist. "Dodrio, shake it off and knock out that Grass Pokémon with your Drill Peck attack!" In seconds, Dodrio was back on its feet and sprinting toward Chikorita with its beaks spinning like drills. Ash opened his mouth to tell Chikorita to counter, but the Normal and Flying Pokémon was much too quick and it drove its beaks into the Leaf Pokémon.

"Chika!"

"Oh, Chikorita's hit!" Ash said with horror as the Grass Pokémon tumbled on the ground and landed on its side. Though he had hope, the Leaf Pokémon didn't get back up, and he hurried out. "Chikorita..." he muttered, scooping the small Pokémon into his arms. "You put up a great battle, Chikorita."

"Chikoree..."

"Chikorita is unable to battle! Dodrio is the winner!"

"Ash should have known better than sending out his Chikorita when he saw how quickly my Hoothoot got beat in the first round; and that was without type advantage," Gary murmured with a roll of his eyes as the younger boy pulled his Pokémon back into its Poké Ball.

"I'm proud of you, Chikorita; you deserve a good rest." He put away its Poké Ball and his fingers trailed over which Poké Ball to select next, but Falkner's voice of confidence pulled his attention away from his belt.

"I warned you: Grass Pokémon can't compete with Flying Pokémon," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. Ash growled and sent a glare at Falkner, and then took out his second choice of Pokémon.

"Then how can they compete against Water-types?" he asked. "Blastoise, I choose you!" The ball opened in the center soon after leaving Ash's fingertips, and his starter Pokémon appeared.

"Blastoise!"

"You're up next, Blastoise! Let's show this guy what we can do!" the dark-haired Trainer encouraged his Pokémon, and the Shellfish Pokémon nodded before opening the cannons on its back. Falkner didn't have any comments on this choice of Pokémon, and his smile simply faded upon seeing the bulky Water-type while the two Pokémon on the battlefield stared each other down.

Finally, the referee raised his hand. "Begin!"

Immediately, Falkner jumped into action and shot a finger forward. "Take out that Blastoise with your Fury Attack, Dodrio!"

"Raaahhh!" Dodrio cried and bounded forward.

"Use your shell and block it, Blastoise!" Ash instructed, and Blastoise took a defensive stance instantly. Dodrio's beaks all drove into the center of Blastoise's stomach, and the Water-type winced as it was forced backwards from the intensity of the attack. But as Dodrio pulled back its heads, that was when Ash made his move. "Now use Hydro Pump!"

"Blastoise!" the Shellfish Pokémon roared, and lowered its shoulders before sending a blast of water from its cannons out at Dodrio.

"Look out, Dodrio!" Falkner cried. The Triple Bird Pokémon tried its best to avoid the attack, and its speed would have made it avoid the blast of water completely – had it not been so close to Blastoise. Instead of getting hit directly, the Water attack clipped Dodrio, hitting two of its heads and making it spin around. When it stopped, the two heads were drenched and shook their feathers of the stray water droplets, but this only irritated the third head that wasn't soaked, and it began to peck at the other two heads. Soon, the heads all glared at each other and soon began to wildly assault the others. "Dodrio!"

"Now let's finish it off! Skull Bash now!" Ash commanded. A silvery aura shimmered around Blastoise's body and it launched itself like a rocket at Dodrio. The heads were too busy fighting to even look up, and was completely by surprise and off its feet by the attack. It landed on its back sprawled out.

"Let's go Dodrio, let's go Dodrio, let's go Dodrio," the students of the Violet Gym all began to chant. The Normal and Flying-type Pokémon reacted to the chanting, and managed to pull itself up and onto its feet.

"Come on, Dodrio! Show 'em how tough you are!" Falkner encouraged with his fists closed tightly. Dodrio let out a cry, and Ash's shoulder's dropped.

"No way! It can't keep going after that!" But it seemed that Dodrio couldn't keep going, and it fell forward onto its stomach.

"Blastoise is the winner!" the brown-haired referee declared, and the worried look that had crossed Ash's face was wiped off with a smile and a fist in the air.

"We did it!"

Falkner's face was unreadable as he held up Dodrio's Poké Ball. "Okay, that's enough, Dodrio," he said, and gave a final smile before the red recall beam shot out and pulled the fainted Dodrio inside. But despite losing his first Pokémon, Falkner didn't seem worried and retrieved his next Poké Ball. "All right, get going, Hoothoot!"

"Hoo-hoo!" the Owl Pokémon hooted as it emerged from its Poké Ball.

"So, Hoothoot's up second..." Ash murmured.

"Your Blastoise could contend with my grounded Pokémon, but can it keep up with an airborne one?" Falkner asked rhetorically, and the beat of the drum off to the side didn't wait for Ash's answer.

"Begin!"

"Hoothoot, take to the skies!" Falkner commanded, and instantly his Hoothoot opened its wings and fluttered high into the air.

"We can't let it get away! Blastoise, BubbleBeam!" the Pallet Town challenger called. Agreeing with the statement, Blastoise opened its mouth and sent out a barrage of bubbles high into the air.

"Hoothoot, climb away from that BubbleBeam and then go into a dive and Tackle attack at top speed!"

"Hoo-hooooo!" Doing just as it was instructed, Hoothoot flew higher into the air, tucking in its stubby wing to barrel spin away from the BubbleBeam attack, and then dove down at Blastoise.

"Blastoise, get out of the way!" Ash hurriedly cried, and as Hoothoot swooped down and missed the Water Pokémon, blowing past both it and Ash with the strong wind almost blowing his cap off.

"Do it again and don't let it get away!"

"Look out, Blastoise! Use Hydro Pump before it gets 'ya!" Ash shouted. Hoothoot was speedy, but Blastoise's reaction time was on par – if not better. As the Normal and Flying Pokémon turned in the air and dove down at Blastoise, the Shellfish Pokémon waited for a hiccup of a second before letting forth a pump of water from its cannons. Hoothoot tried to spin around it, but got caught up in the second stream from the other cannon.

"Hoothoot!" Falkner cried as the Owl Pokémon was shot out of the air and down onto his side of the battlefield. The Violet Gym Leader rushed out and caught the round Pokémon like one would catch a dodge-ball, and looked at it with worry. "Hoothoot, are you okay?"

"Hoo..."

"Blastoise is the winner!" the referee announced, and a small smile spread across Gary's face.

"Well, that didn't take long."

"You did a fine job, Hoothoot," Falkner said to his Pokémon, cradling it in his arm while holding its Poké Ball in the other hand. "You deserve a good, long rest."

"Great job, Blastoise! You did awesome!" Ash congratulated with a thumbs-up, and his starter Pokémon returned it with a smirk over its shoulder.

"Now that Falkner's down to his last Pokémon, we all know what it'll be..." Gary commented as Falkner drew his last Poké Ball.

"Goooo... Pidgeot!" He threw the ball into the air and the Normal and Flying Pokémon that both of them were familiar with flew high into the sky out of the bright plasma.

"Pijot-toh!"

"I had a feeling he'd save his Pidgeot for last," Ash stated, looking up at the Bird Pokémon. "Do you want to take a break, Blastoise?"

"Blast, Blastoise!" Blastoise shook its head, and showed that it was ready to carry on, which only widened Ash's smile.

"All right!"

"Begin!"

As soon as the stick hit the skin of the drum, Ash jumped into battle mode. "Let's show 'em we never give up! Use your BubbleBeam, Blastoise!"

"Fly, Pidgeot, now!" Falkner commanded, and with a short shriek, Pidgeot flapped its wings and shot higher into the sky. The BubbleBeam soared far, but Pidgeot was too fast and it missed its mark.

"We've got to land an attack! Use Hydro Pump and don't let it get away!"

"Blastoise!" A powerful jet of water was launched from its cannons, straight up at Pidgeot.

"Pidgeot, Agility!" the Gym Leader called. As it had with Gary's match, Pidgeot disappeared just as the Hydro Pump threatened to hit it, and then reappeared some distance to the right. Blastoise shifted its body so the streams of water would hit it, but Pidgeot simply used its Agility again to dodge. "Now Pidgeot, use your Quick Attack!"

"Pijot-toh!" The Bird Pokémon dove down at Blastoise, moving faster than their eyes could even keep up. Before they knew it, Blastoise was reeling back, and Pidgeot's beak was ramming into the center of its shell.

"Blastoise!" Ash cried.

"Keep going, Pidgeot! Hit it with your Wing Attack and don't let it recover!"

"Pijot! Toh! Pijot! Pijotoh!" Over and over, Blastoise was mercilessly struck by the speedy Pidgeot, and each time it was hit, it was knocked over or would stumble around to try and gain its bearings. Behind his Pokémon, Ash could only watch helplessly as Pidgeot would fly by, disappear, and reappear just before it would hit Blastoise.

"We've got to do something!" Ash yelled with panic in his voice, and then Gary's strategy from the day before flashed in his mind. "Try and hit it with Hydro Pump before it can hit you!"

Blastoise had been hit from behind, so it stomped its foot on the ground and glared up as Pidgeot whirled around in the air, looking to dive-bomb it again. It let out a cry and sent forth a torrential Hydro Pump. "Pidgeot! Agility!" Falkner called, and the Flying Pokémon disappeared before it was going to get hit. "Now, finish it off with a Wing Attack!"

"Pijjoooot-toh!" The shriek echoed off the buildings around the Gym as Pidgeot reappeared behind Blastoise and shot past it, slicing its wing past it. Blastoise stumbled forward, and this time, it collapsed on the ground.

"Blastoise!" Ash cried, running up to his Pokémon.

"Pidgeot is the winner!" the referee in white called.

"Now Ash is down to one Pokémon..." Gary commented from the sidelines as his eyebrows furrowed on his forehead.

"You did a great job, Blastoise," Ash told it, patting its head and holding out its Poké Ball. "You deserve a rest." He stood after it disappeared inside the ball, and went back to the challenger's box. His brown eyes watched without emotion as Pidgeot fluttered and landed on the ground. "I've only got one more chance to win... and that's all I need!" He pulled out his last choice of Pokémon from his belt and threw it forward. "I choose you! Charmeleon!"

The ball tapped against the stadium floor and the cap opened, releasing the energy stored inside onto the arena. As the ball flew back into Ash's palm, the red Fire-type stood and spit an orange flame from its mouth. "Char." Pidgeot and Falkner both sized up their much smaller opponent, and Falkner only smirked as his one visible eye looked down at Charmeleon.

"Beeeegin!" the referee called, and the final beat of the drum gave a hollow ring. This was it. The beginning of the end.

"Now, fly Pidgeot!" Falkner immediately called.

"Charmeleon, use your Flamethrower attack!" Ash shouted almost at the same time. He wanted to get the upper hand on Pidgeot before it could raise its speed. Pidgeot shot into the sky like a rocket, and Charmeleon was close behind with a Flamethrower attack. It followed Pidgeot with its head, directing the flames toward the Bird Pokémon.

"Pidgeot, you've got to get out of the way!" Falkner shouted, and his Pidgeot replied back with a caw and tucked in its right wing to spin. However, the flames clipped the side of its wing, and smoke rose from where the feathers had been singed – it wasn't a direct hit, but it was something.

"We got it!" Ash cheered.

"I guarantee that will be the last time you hit Pidgeot," Falkner boasted.

"We'll see about that! Quick Charmeleon, use another Flamethrower attack!"

"Chaaar!" Charmeleon growled and let loose a stream of orange and yellow flames up toward Pidgeot.

"Pidgeot, Agility!" the Gym Leader ordered, and Pidgeot disappeared in a blink of an eye seconds before getting hit with the Fire-type attack. Ash's lips peeled back from his lips as Charmeleon unleashed a third Flamethrower, but this too resulted in a miss. This was exactly what happened to Blastoise. "Now Pidgeot, Quick Attack!"

A familiar cry to Ash screamed from above, and soon, Pidgeot was swooping down at Charmeleon. Its beak drove into Charmeleon's cream-colored belly, knocking the Flame Pokémon off its feet and onto its back. "Charmeleon!" Ash cried with horror. Its Trainer's call made Charmeleon's eyes flicker open, and it stood back up, rubbing the point of impact with its claws. But as it turned back to Ash and gave him a thumbs-up, it was struck from behind with another Quick Attack.

"Pidgeot, keep using Quick Attack until this match is over!" Falkner ordered. As before, Pidgeot kept coming down and hitting Charmeleon, over and over again. Charmeleon didn't seem to be taking this as lightly as Blastoise had, either. Without a shell to boost its defenses, Charmeleon was taking more damage than its teammate, and with each strike, it too seemed to be helpless.

Ash's blood ran cold as he watched the scene unfold. Charmeleon would try and hit Pidgeot with a Flamethrower attack, but it was useless; the Bird Pokémon would just disappear with its Agility and then reappear behind it and strike with Quick Attack. He was going to lose his first Johto League Gym Battle. And in front of Gary.

Charmeleon shared its Trainer's frustrations, and its brow seemed to furrow more and more with each hit and miss of its Flamethrower. "What else can I do..." Ash murmured as a bead of sweat formed under the brim of his hat.

"Forfeit," Falkner said from across the battlefield.

"Forfeit?!" Ash repeated as if the word itself was venom.

"It's supposed to be a Trainer's responsibility to judge whether his Pokémon can continue to battle or not. And you've got a helpless Charmeleon; what's the point of battling anymore? You can't win the match."

"Oh yeah? Well my Charmeleon isn't a quitter and neither am I!"

"Whatever you say, Ash," Falkner said, closing his eyes before shooting them open. "Maybe losing this battle will teach you a lesson. Pidgeot, hit Charmeleon with your best Quick Attack now! Finish it!"

"I never ask you to do anything I know you can't do, Charmeleon," Ash told his Pokémon as Pidgeot tucked in its wings and dove down at the Fire-type Pokémon. "And now I need you to hit Pidgeot!"

"Charrr!" Charmeleon cried, stomping its feet on the ground. Its anger and Ash's words seemed to ring through its head, and it suddenly began to glow brightly. Ash's face melted into one of shock, and Falkner's eyes widened. Up above, the bright glow blinded Pidgeot, and the Normal and Flying Pokémon cried out and flapped its wings, pushing itself away so it could see what was happening. Charmeleon's body grew in size, and bright wings sprouted from its back. Finally, the glow faded, and a completely different Pokémon stood in Charmeleon's place: a Charizard.

"Charmeleon evolved into Charizard!" Gary exclaimed, standing up from shock.

"I don't believe it!" Ash breathed, pulling out his Pokédex to scan his new Pokémon.

"Charizard, the Flame Pokémon. Charizard's powerful flame can melt absolutely anything."

The initial shock of the sudden evolution settled in Falkner's face, and as Ash put away the mechanical device, he smirked. "So, your Charmeleon evolved, huh? Things are finally gonna get interesting." The two Trainers locked eyes, and on the battlefield, their Pokémon were glaring at each other as well.

"Charizard... fly!" Ash instructed, his whole body seeming to shake. The newly-evolved Fire-type threw its head back and roared loudly before flapping its new-formed wings. It lifted off the ground and with one more wave, it shot up after Pidgeot. "Charizard, use your Flamethrower!" Opening its mouth, Charizard roared and sent out a red-yellow stream of fire from its mouth.

"Look out, Pidgeot!" Falkner yelled as he craned his neck upward. Pidgeot cawed and moved to dodge, and for the most part, it missed, but as before, the flames licked at its wing.

"Quick, Charizard! Try another Flamethrower attack!" the Pallet Town Trainer called, and Charizard obeyed, letting out a second stream of fire from its mouth.

"Pidgeot, Agility!" As before, Pidgeot disappeared and reappeared through the flames. Charizard was letting its rage fuel it, and unleashed a flurry of Flamethrower attacks at Pidgeot, and the Bird Pokémon weaved through them.

"It's too fast!" Ash exclaimed, and bit his lip. "Charizard, Flamethrower attack!"

Falkner had finally had enough and called a counter of his own. "Pidgeot, Whirlwind attack!"

"Pijoh! Pijohjohjohjoh!" The fierce wind created from Pidgeot's flapping wings sent back the Flamethrower at Charizard, and the Fire-type winced as the flames licked at its scales.

"Charizard! Are you all right?!" Ash cried as Charizard spiraled in the air.

"You've got 'em on the run, Pidgeot! Try a Wing Attack!"

"Charizard, fly and dodge it!" Charizard's wings opened up suddenly like a parachute, and it managed to catch itself before spinning out of the way of Pidgeot's attack. It was now a true sky battle, but Falkner didn't seem worried. As Charizard crept up behind the Flying Pokémon, Falkner smirked at Ash.

"Your Charizard may be able to fly, but can it fly fast?"

"Oh no!" Ash exclaimed, his eyes darting up to the sky.

"Pidgeot, use your Agility attack, quick!" Right before Charizard's eyes, the Bird Pokémon disappeared. Seconds later, it reappeared behind the Fire-type. "Go Pidgeot! Try your Quick Attack again! Now!"

"Pijot-toh!" his Pokémon cawed, and shot forward before driving its beak into Charizard's stomach, who had heard the cry and turned around just in time to get hit. Charizard reeled and caught itself, and then flew back after Pidgeot.

"Fly around as much as you want," Falkner smirked. "Nothing's gonna change." As he finished his sentence, Falkner's Pidgeot disappeared and reappeared behind Charizard. Before the Flame Pokémon knew what was happening, it had already swept past it with a Wing Attack.

"He's right! Pidgeot's just gonna keep using the same attacks..." Ash growled, and then a light bulb sparked to life in his head. "Wait a minute... If Pidgeot keeps using the same attacks over and over again... maybe we still have a chance to win!" Craning his neck up, he looked at his Charizard once more. "Okay Charizard, fly up behind Pidgeot!" Charizard looked exhausted, but nevertheless, it kept going and flew after Falkner's ace Pokémon.

"You don't know when to give in! Pidgeot, Quick Attack!" Falkner declared, and his Pidgeot disappeared once again.

It was like a jolt of electricity buzzed through Ash's entire body. Falkner did exactly what he wanted him to. But he had to act fast. "Charizard! Quick! Turn around and use Flamethrower!" Without waiting for Pidgeot to appear, Charizard whipped its body around and opened its mouth, giving a mighty roar before unleashing a powerful Flamethrower attack. Pidgeot reappeared behind it seconds later, and its eyes widened when it saw a Flamethrower attack coming straight for it. It tried to stop and opened its wings to catch itself, but the Flamethrower made a direct hit on its stomach.

"Pidgeot! No!" Falkner exclaimed. Burnt to a crisp, Pidgeot fell out of the sky and crash-landed on the stadium.

"Pidgeot get up! Pidgeot get up! Pidgeot get up!" Falkner's students chanted. Ash's breath hitched in his throat as Pidgeot struggled for a moment, but it collapsed fully on the ground. Pidgeot had been defeated.

"Aack! Pidgeot!" he cried.

Ash's eyes shot to the referee, who glanced at Pidgeot and nodded. "And the challenger, Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town – is the winner!"

"Congratulations, Charizard!" Ash cheered, throwing his fists in the air as he smiled from ear to ear. Charizard threw its head back and unleashed a powerful flame from the back of its throat. The scene was just amazing, and Ash felt lighter than air as he jumped from foot to foot and giggled happily. "We did it! We won, we won!"

For the second time now, the party of two stood in front of the Violet Gym as the sun began to set over the city. But this time, it was Ash in center, and Falkner's eyes were locked onto him. "It was really smart of you to use Pidgeot's speed to your advantage," the Gym Leader complimented. "That was a great strategy." As with Gary, he reached into his robe and held out his Gym's Badge. "A defeat is a defeat. Take this: the Zephyr Badge."

"Thanks! That's nice of you to say," Ash said, grabbing his earned Badge from Falkner's palm. He looked down at the silver Badge, and could feel the excitement welling up inside him. He couldn't hold it back any longer, and let loose, spinning around and holding it forward. "All right! The Zephyr Badge! Yes!"

"Battling with you two has inspired me to learn more and to train harder," Falkner said to the pair. "It's the only way I'll reach my goal of being the world's number one Flying Pokémon Trainer." Surprisingly, the Gym Leader extended a hand to both of them. "I hope you two have good luck in the Johto League."

"Thanks! And good luck to you!" Ash responded, shaking his hand. Gary did the same, and with both of them one Badge closer to the Johto League, they parted from the Violet Gym, waving goodbye to Falkner before continuing on their journey.
