Welcome everyone to my new chapter for my Pokémon story: A Human and his Gardevoir. Thank you all for the support from the last two chapters and glad this is going well so far. I've gone back to playing my old games and getting some ideas for the next chapters. And I'm looking forward to them when I get to them.
Now, keep in mind, again, this game will be a lot like the game but have elements on the anime too. This doesn't mean characters from the anime like Max and Ash will appear. This is all set in a universe where neither exists. But it will have some familiar characters from my original story.
So, be on the lookout for some of those familiar characters.
Anyways, last time we saw May's journey begin as a Pokémon Coordinator. We see her with her mom, and they talk about her decision not to tell her dad, Norman, just yet. Eventually she will, but for the time being, she's pretending she'll be a Pokémon Trainer. While also seeing her crashing into Ryan and the two meeting for the first time.
How will things go after this? Will this cause some issues before they become friends? How will Annabeth feel about her son getting into this accident? And will she feel less sure her son will do well on this journey?
Check out the chapter to find out. I want to thank everyone for supporting my story and my friend for his help as well. I appreciate the support and feedback. I don't own anything from the Pokémon universe, except my OCs. So, without any further delays, enjoy the chapter everyone.
Chapter III: Restart
Flashback
May is seen riding down from her home of Petalburg City on her bike. She just left home and now has begun her journey. Her journey to become a Pokémon Coordinator. She was so happy that she finally began her journey and couldn't wait to see where her journey would take her.
She just needed to go visit the Pokémon Center, which is connected to the hospital that was built.
She was told to go there to see Ms. Annabeth so she could meet up with her son, Ryan. May saw a picture of the young boy. He did seem nice, and she didn't mind the idea of having a traveling partner. As long as he doesn't tell her dad the truth about her journey.
The last thing she wants is to have her dad find out and become disappointed in her.
May just has to meet with Ryan, then meet her dad before she leaves, and then head off to begin her journey. She honestly couldn't wait for it. She's dreamed of this moment for a long time. And has a chance to finally make it come true.
"I know the first contest is at (place city name), which is close by the first gym that Ryan can go to," said May who knew this will work out well for the both of them.
As rode her bike, she began thinking about possibly challenging the gym leader. "Mom did suggest that I should give it a try. At the very least to get my Pokémon some battle experience."
May knew for her to get the best team to help her in her contests, she'll need to help them gain some battle experience. She remembered her dad telling her how Pokémon can get stronger and grow with every battle. It also helps that with every battle they gain new moves, which can help her in the contests. So, maybe a few battles here and there at these gyms could help?
That way she can at least show her dad she did try to become a Pokémon trainer.
As she rode her bike, she began realizing something as she stopped riding. "Hmm…what kind of Pokémon should I go after?"
May knew if she was going to become a top coordinator, she needed to pick out the best Pokémon to do it. May knew she has Torchic, but what another Pokémon to go with?
"I really need to think about which to go with. I obviously need one that'll be so beautiful, but also strong, graceful, and will look so cute in a dress," said May who needed to really think about this carefully. "Ah man. I really need to look over my Pokédex to see which to…" it was then May realized something very important she forgot to get.
"Ahhhh! I forgot to get my Pokédex!" May was so busy getting everything ready for her travel that she forgot she needed to get her Pokédex from Professor Birch. "Evert trainer, even one who will become a coordinator, needs one. I need to go get the Pokédex."
She stopped when she realized something else important. "But I can't leave Ms. Annabeth and Ryan waiting for me till I get my Pokédex. That would be so rude…unless…" May thought of an idea of what she can do. "Maybe I can call Professor Birch and see if he'll send me the Pokédex or if he can hold one for me."
If she can go meet up with Ryan at the Pokémon Center and then convince him to follow her to see Professor Birch, then she can get her Pokédex.
"I mean. I'm sure he'll be okay with doing that, right?" said May to herself, who didn't see anything wrong in what she was going to do. "I'm sure he'll understand and maybe along the way, he can help me catch some Pokémon."
May is now convinced to go through with this plan of hers and believes Ryan will follow her back to Littleroot Town to see the professor.
"All right. Let's go and meet up with Ryan then," said May as she begins moving the peddles to her bike.
She begins going fast though as she decides to head to her destination. As she rode her bike, she suddenly found herself running into traffic. May must have taken the wrong side of the road as she saw so many people walking by. May screamed as she tried to avoid hitting any of the people and their Pokémon.
May managed to turn her bike as she rode down an alleyway. As soon as she did this, she saw some Zigzagoon who are seen eating some trash. She screamed and tried to avoid hitting them, but she did end up hitting a few before she stopped her bike. Before she had a chance to apologize, she saw the group of Zigzagoon all turning towards her, looking quite angry.
May's expression turned to one of fear as she gripped her bike tightly and began to ride out of the alleyway as the Zigzagoon began chasing her. This caused her to begin screaming in fear as the Pokemon chased her. She could use her Torchic, but she saw there were too many of them.
She sped up as fast as possible and managed to get some distance from them, as she began to sigh in relief. However, when she turned around, she saw a young man in front of her pathway and tried to put on the brake, but it wasn't stopping fast enough.
"Watch out!" May yelled out as the young man turned around and screamed as well before the two ended up crashing into one another.
The Zigzagoon saw this and soon began to run off as they felt they got their payback. The main leader of the group saw the young boy and chuckled before it ran off to join the others.
A few minutes later
"And the next thing I know, we're being picked up by Mr. Sota and Yuto before they brought us here," said May as she finished explaining what happened from her side of the story, after Ryan gave his side too.
After the two kids crashed, Mr. Sota, the baker, and Mr. Yuto, the repairman, picked the two kids up. Bringing them towards the hospital to be taken care of. After they brought the kids, they left to pick up their bikes so Mr. Yuto can fix them up. He's the local repairman for the city that can go around fixing almost anything, even bikes.
Annabeth thanked the two men for what they did and promised to pay Mr. Yuto for repairing the bikes. But he reassured them it'll be free of charge, which she is thankful for.
Annabeth had to call May's parents to let them know what happened so they can come by to see her. Thankfully, the kids didn't get any serious injuries. Just a few bruises here and there, but nothing major. Their Pokémon were also taken to get cared for by Nurse Joy so they can also get a clean bill of health.
"I've never heard of Zigzagoon being so violent like this before. It is very odd for them to do this. They're just so innocent," said Annabeth as she had trouble believing such cute Pokémon like Zigzagoon could be violent.
"Mom, I guarantee you that those Zigzagoon, including the one who caused me to break my bike, is anything but innocent," said Ryan as his mom finished caring for the small cuts he suffered before he got to the city. "I'm almost tempted to find them and kick their little butts."
"You and me both," said May who agreed with Ryan who wanted some bit of payback too, before she realized something. "Oh, um sorry by the way for crashing into you. You're Ryan, right?"
Ryan nods in response as he gave a small smile to May and extended his hand to her. "It's all good, May. I'm glad to finally get the chance to meet you. I just didn't expect it to be like this though," he replied as he rubbed the back of his head and chuckled.
May couldn't help but chuckle too and nod in response. "Not exactly how I expected us to meet, yeah. But I'm glad to finally get the chance to meet you. Your mom told me a lot about you."
"Did she now?" Ryan asked before turning to his mom. "Please tell me you didn't say anything embarrassing, right?"
Annabeth shook her head and lifted her left hand while putting her right hand over her chest. "I swear, I would never do such a thing, my sweet baby boy," she replied while getting a small giggle from May after calling Ryan her sweet baby boy.
"Mooooom ~ Come on," said Ryan who blushed a little with what his mom did.
"I'm just teasing. Don't worry about it," said Annabeth as she began removing her medical gloves. "I'm just glad you two are okay. I'm sorry your first day on your journey went like this."
"I'm sure we expected it to go better, but it's still okay," said May as she begins putting on her bandana back on her head. "I just wish you didn't call my parents. I'm fine, Ms. Annabeth."
"I know you are, but if I found out my baby got injured and I wasn't given a call, then I'd be pretty upset," said Annabeth who knew as a doctor, it is her duty to inform any parent if their child, legal age or not, is in the hospital. "Now don't worry. They won't take too much time from you two. I know you two want to get ready and head out for your journey."
"We really do," said Ryan who couldn't wait to begin his journey properly without any more trouble. "Still, I guess it's better than letting them worry."
May didn't like it, but she knew they were both right. "I guess that's true."
Soon enough, May saw a nurse coming over to inform Annabeth that the parents were here. "All right, send them in," she told the nurse before she turned to the kids. "May, follow the nurse and she'll take you to a private room so you can talk to your folks."
"I appreciate it, Ms. Annabeth and thank you," said May before she got off the seat and followed the nurse.
Once they were gone, a Chansey came by with Ryan's Pokéballs. "Looks like your team are all healed up," said Annabeth as she handed them back to her son. "Still, it's impressive that you already got yourself a full team. Well done, Ryan."
"Thanks mom, though it wasn't easy," said Ryan who knew catching these Pokémon was tricky. He then saw the Pokéball with the Poochyena and sighed. "Um mom. Would it be okay if I this one to Professor Birch?"
"Hmm? Why's that?" Annabeth asked before her son told her about the Pokémon and she can understand his concerns. "Well, if you don't feel comfortable having this one with your Ralts around, then maybe it would be best to return him to the wild with the other Poochyena."
It wasn't uncommon for Pokémon Trainers to release Pokémon they've caught that they felt uneasy to have or couldn't control them. So, they would release them back into the wild.
"Still, as a Pokémon Trainer, keep this in mind. You will come across Pokémon you'll have trouble trying to tame and control. If you let fear keep you from growing, then the Pokémon you catch will sense that fear and will likely not want to listen to you," Annabeth explained as she tells her son the importance of showing strength, while showing kindness to their Pokémon.
Annabeth explained that even if Ryan shows a lot of love and kindness to his Pokémon, there will be those who'll want a trainer who's strong too. One who can tame them, and they can lend their strength to. If Ryan is too scared to try taming this Pokémon, then it might end up with him unable to do the same for future Pokémon. It doesn't mean he shouldn't show any love to them, but he still should show his bravery and strength to them too so they can listen to him.
Ryan thinks about this and tries to weigh his options. He knew his mom is right and if he's too scared to try taming this Pokémon, then what if the next one he catches is like this Poochyena. Unable to control and afraid they'll hurt the other Pokémon. But if he stands strong, uses a firm hand, and tries to befriend the Pokémon, then he might win him over.
Still, he knew Rachel wasn't too happy about the Poochyena hanging out with them, especially after what it tried to do. But he knew he could try changing her mind about it if he could show he can be tamed and be kinder.
"So, what's it going to be, Ryan?" Annabeth asked as she leaves the tray with the Pokéballs next to her son. "Keep the Pokémon or let him go?"
Ryan looked down at the tray and the Pokéballs before he made his choice. A minute passed, he grabbed the balls and put them on his belt. Annabeth smiled when she saw this and knew her son would be a good trainer.
"All right. I'm going to get you a pamphlet so you can get an idea of how to train Poochyena. I'll even give you some Potions, Revives, and Full Health," said Annabeth who knew she can pay for them so her son can use them for his journey.
"Mom, its fine. I can pay for them," said Ryan who didn't want his mom to give him the items.
"Just consider it one last gift from me to you. Be back in a flash," said Annabeth as she left the room to get the items.
Once she left, Ryan sighed softly and began getting his jacket when he saw one of his Pokeballs moving. He realized which one it was and begins grabbing it before letting Rachel out of the ball. "Hey sorry. I was just about to let you out. Are you okay?"
Rachel the Ralts looked up to her human partner and saw he had some bandages on him but seemed fine. I'm all right, but I was more worried for you. I thought you got seriously hurt when that girl crashed into you.
"It was an accident, Rachel. And one that I felt was also my fault…but mostly that Zigzagoon," said Ryan who knew when he comes back to this town, he'll hunt down those Zigzagoon and make them pay. "Anyways, we're all good and ready to go for our journey with May."
We're…traveling with the human girl? Rachel clearly didn't like that idea.
Ryan took notice of her response and sighed before he kneels in front of her. "Look, I know you don't like her, and I get it. But she seems nice and apologized too for what happened."
It's not that. It's just... Rachel tried to choose her words carefully as she moved her tiny hand to her chin and replied. I guess I'm still not used to…other humans.
Ryan looked a little surprised by her response, but as he thinks about it, then he can understand her reasoning for this.
"I guess that makes sense. I remember seeing in the Pokédex that your species are shy around humans," said Ryan who remembered that Ralts are highly attuned to the emotions of people and Pokémon. "And you guys hide if you sense hostility."
Rachel nods in response while thankful she didn't insult Ryan for what she said. I trusted you because you saved my life, and you showed such kindness to me. But with other humans…I'm still a little uneasy about.
Rachel did like Ryan's mother, Annabeth, who she can sense is very kind and very motherly. It reminded her of her own mother, who she missed dearly. So, when she met Annabeth, her motherly side brought up some happy memories. Still, Annabeth is the exception, the others though.
I guess I'm not open to other humans like you are. I'll try with this girl, but I don't make any promises I'll like her right away. Rachel knew it was going to take her some time before she began to like other humans.
"Fair enough. I know we'll likely run into some humans who are jerks, but we don't need to be friends with them," said Ryan as he pets Rachel's head gently, making the small Pokémon giggle. "I'm looking forward to traveling with you, Rachel. But um before we do, I do need to let you know something."
Ryan knew Rachel isn't going to like this, but he's hoping she'll give this a chance. As long as the two Pokémon aren't near the other, it should be fine…right?
Meanwhile
Annabeth was coming back with a bag full of Potions, Revives, and Full Heal. She knew her son and May were going to need this. They're going to go up against other trainers and Pokémon. This will help heal their injured Pokémon and keep them healthy until they reach a Pokémon Center.
She knew after here, they'll likely head to Rustboro City to battle the Gym Leader, Roxanne. She just hopes her son will be ready by then and will have gotten his team stronger too.
As she headed back to her son, she saw Norman coming out of the room with his wife after they said their goodbyes to May. They must have finished with their talk and are on their way out. She knew Norman as a Gym Leader would likely head back to continue with his duties. Though she doubts any new trainers will come by here anytime soon.
Still, as a Gym Leader, he does have a lot of responsibilities. It was still nice to see him see his daughter and make sure she's okay. He may be a Gym Leader, but he's a dad. And that comes first above anything else.
She walked over to see May getting her Pokéballs back from Chansey before she put her stuff away in her bag. "I take it the talk went well?" Annabeth asked as she got a small nod from May.
"I reassured them I was okay. The nurse showed them my report and I was clear to go," said May as she picked her bag up and put it on her back. "I reassured my parents I was okay, but my mom of course was still worried for me and told me to call them when I make it to the next town."
Annabeth knew that wasn't going to happen soon enough. "Well, just to let you know, the next place you and Ryan will be heading is Route 104. That leads towards Petalburg Woods. Full of Insect-type Pokémon."
"I-Insect types?" May wasn't fond of that idea, but she knew she would have to build up her team in order to become a Top Coordinator. "I think we'll manage. I'm hoping I can find some Pokémon there to build my team up."
"Ah yes, to become a Pokémon Coordinator, right?" Annabeth asked, getting a surprised look from May's face. "Oh relax, sweetie. Your mom and I are close, so you should have known she'd end up telling me this. Lucky for you, I'm very good at keeping secrets."
Annabeth is glad to be friends with Caroline and how close the two have gotten in such a short time. She knew their kids would become very good friends by the end of this journey. Just like their parents. So, it shouldn't surprise May that she knew about what she wanted to do.
"And if you want my advice, I suggest getting a Wurmple," Annabeth suggested as she explained they can evolve into either a Silcoon or Cascoon. One will evolve into a beautiful Beautifly and the other a Dustox. "Either one works, and both are beautiful in their own way, no matter what people say about Dustox."
Annabeth knew Dustox gets a negative reputation among Coordinators due to their appearances. But she knew they're very pretty Pokémon and deserve a lot of love.
"Oh wow, really? That sounds amazing," said May who really did want a Beautifly, but if Ms. Annabeth believes a Dustox will work, then she'll take it. "You know a lot about being a Pokémon Coordinator Ms. Annabeth?"
Annabeth gave a small nod and led her towards her office. There, she shows some pictures she has along her furniture to show the different pictures. One of them shows a young Annabeth when she was a Pokémon Trainer but showed her in a pretty dress and holding a trophy. May saw it and looked in awe at it.
"Oh wow! That's amazing!" said May who couldn't believe Ryan's mom was a Top Coordinator.
"Yep. That was me at 11 years old winning my first contest," Annabeth explained she tried to spend her first year as a Pokémon Trainer but got into being a Coordinator later on. "I spend much of my time learning how the whole thing works, trained with my Pokémon, and competed in my first contest."
"That's amazing!" May exclaimed as she looked over the pictures that Annabeth has and all the different Pokémon in them. "You won a lot of them, huh? You and all your Pokémon."
"Can't always depend on one Pokémon in these contests. You need to expand your team and use their many abilities to help create the perfect performance," said Annabeth as she explained how as a Coordinator to use all the skills their Pokémon have to their full potential. "However, you also need to be ready for any battles too. In these contests, they expect you to know how to battle and make them all look beautiful too."
"Oh right. I almost forgot about that," said May who realized she'll need to toughen up her team before she competes in her first contest. "To do that I'll need to get a strong and beautiful team together first…um Ms. Annabeth, these performances aren't all live, right? Like on TV I mean."
Annabeth thinks about it and knows back in her time, not at all, at least for the local ones. "Only for the Grand Festival, which is where only the Top Coordinators who won all five ribbons will be able to compete in. But last time I checked, that won't happen for another three months, so you got time."
"Three months?! I thought it was six months!" or did May get the dates wrong. She pulled her book out of her bag and realized she did indeed get the date wrong. "Ah man! I have three months before the Grand Festival?! Will I even have time to get the team I need? Will I be able to win all these contests before then?"
May was having a little panic attack. She had planned all this out well. First, she'd assemble the best team she can get and train them for their first contest. After that, she'll travel around winning all five contests, come back home, tell her dad the truth, and then go on to the Grand Festival. That was her plan and she planned it all out so well.
Now she's being told she only has half the time she thought she'd have.
Annabeth saw what was happening and tried to calm the girl down. "May, May, its okay. I know this is all so sudden, but I'll make sure Ryan helps you. Just like your mom and I will help you when you eventually tell your dad the truth. Although I feel you're overthinking about this too much and should tell him anyways."
May begins calming herself down as she takes deep breaths and begins to relax. All the while knowing she should tell her dad, but she already had this talk with him. She'll tell him. Just not yet.
"I know and I appreciate the support, Ms. Annabeth. I just…I just want to first get all my ribbons and then come home," said May who knew she can't risk telling her dad just yet on what she wants to do. "For now? I'm going to focus on getting my first ribbon, which should be going soon to get."
Annabeth sighed as she moved her hands off May's shoulders. "All right then, but remember, don't be afraid to tell your dad how you feel. You're his daughter. He'll support you, no matter what. Just like I support my son and his journey, even if I am worried about him."
May could tell Annabeth really cares for her son. The pictures she has by her desk are proof of that. She could see Ryan when he was a baby to him as a toddler to him right now. May felt a little sense of relief that she has someone so kind helping her on her journey. And she knew she'd do her best to help him too on his journey to be a Pokémon Master.
"I'm sure he'll be okay, and I'll make sure to bring him back here in one piece," and without them getting into more accidents.
Annabeth felt really happy knowing May would take care of her son and he'll be all right. "Thank you, dear. Let's go see Ryan and see you both off on your journey."
May appreciates it and begins heading towards where Ryan is at. They saw him coming out of the room, with his Ralts, Rachel, on his head. "Aww, that's so cute," said May as she saw the Pokémon riding on the boy's head. "She seems to like you."
Rachel blushed a little and hid her face on Ryan's head. Ryan chuckled softly as he pets her. "She doesn't like being in a Pokéball, so I'll have her travel on my head."
"Hmm well, that is fine, but I have a better way for her to travel with you," said Annabeth as she foresaw this and begins getting a sash that goes around Ryan. She walked over and set it up, before picking Rachel up gently and placing her in the sash. "There we go. It's a carrying sash that the nurses use for small Pokémon to help walk around with them and help them sleep."
"Oh wow. This feels nice," said Ryan who appreciates the help from his mom. "And she does seem comfortable. Thank you so much, mom. I appreciate it."
Rachel indeed found this new way of transportation to be comfortable. She appreciated it and knew she wouldn't have to worry about falling off Ryan or risk grabbing his hair.
"You're welcome, Ryan. Just be careful with it, okay?" said Annabeth who wanted to make sure he is careful with the sash and doesn't lose it. "Now, let's head outside. I'm sure by now the bikes should be fixed. Oh, and by the way, you both have your maps?"
Ryan and May showed their maps that they were given, while Ryan showed he had a compass just in case they got lost. Even showed he has the GPS device that his mom gave him, just in case they really needed it, but Ryan wanted to try using a map and compass for this.
"That's my boy," said Annabeth who is happy to see her son has come prepared. "Now, the next place you're going through is Petalburg Woods. I've gotten you some Full Heal so you both will be okay in case you run into any Pokémon that could leave your team paralyzed or poisoned."
Annabeth hands her son the bag with the Potions, Revives, and Full Heal. Ryan sees how many his mom got them, while thankful for it, but did feel she overdid it. Although he should have figured he'd get this much. At least he's saving money on this.
"Thank you, mom. I really appreciate this, and I promise we'll call you to let you know when we make it to the next city," said Ryan as he gives his mom a gentle hug, which she returned as well and is gentle due to Ralts in the middle. "I love you so much."
"And I love you too, Ryan," said Annabeth as she did her best to hold back her tears before breaking the hug and begin heading outside to see the bikes ready for them with Mr. Yuto, who fixed them waiting by the bikes. "Aww look at that. They look brand-new."
"Oh wow! This looks so good!" said May as she went to check on her bike and saw how it does look brand-new. "This is amazing. I love this so much," May turned to Mr. Yuto and gives him a small head bow. "Thank you so much, sir."
Mr. Yuto reassures May it was no problem and he's thankful to help out. Annabeth though did want to pay him back for this, he refused and only asked the kids to take care of the bikes. Even give them a box that has some stuff to maintain the bikes. Oil, wipes, and wax for the tires.
Once that was done, he soon left and headed back to his home. Leaving the young trainers with their bikes as they looked over them, before Annabeth places the bag with the medications in May's basket.
"All right. Now that you two have what you need, then you should get going before dusk," said Annabeth who knew they spend too much time in town and its almost the afternoon.
"Oh right! Let's get going then," said May as she got on the bike and put on her helmet. "Lead the way, Ryan. I'll follow you from behind."
"Okay then," said Ryan as he set Rachel in his basket before he turned to his mom and gave a small wave. "I'll see you later, mom."
Annabeth again did her best to hold back her tears and wave back at him. "I'll see you later too, Ryan. I love you and be careful."
"I love you too and thank you, mom," said Ryan as he took a deep breath and soon begins riding off towards the forest, with May following him.
Annabeth watched on as the kids left, while feeling her heart sink a little. A part of her wanted her son to stay a little longer. She wanted her baby boy to stay little. But she knew she had to let him go.
He was on a very important journey and knows he'll come home. She wished she could go with him, but much like she did, then when she was his age, she knew he would need to go on this journey without her. At the very least, he isn't alone. He has May with her and knows the two of them will look out for one another.
Annabeth looked up at the sky and felt the warm sun against her. "I hope he'll be able to overcome anything that comes his way. Without losing himself or letting anymore try changing him."
Annabeth feels the soft breeze against her, causing her to giggle softly. "Of course he'll be okay. He's a lot like you, John. So, I know he'll come back in one piece and be the same loving boy. Only he'll come back to us as a strong Pokémon Trainer and one day, master."
That's the end of the chapter and it looks like the journey has finally begun. There was a little setback here and there, but Ryan and May are now on their way out in the world. How will things go with them on their journey? Will they run into some trouble?
Also, to be honest? I thought about just having Poochyena out of the story, but I decided to give this a try and see how it goes. I'm sure Rachel isn't super thrilled about it. But she'll have to get used to it…for now.
We also saw where their next destination is going to be. How will things go when they head to the forest? Will they run into the kind of Pokémon, May will need? Or will they run into some more trouble?
Tune in next time to find out.
