A/N: I like this one!

Snow was falling outside with a vengeance. It was such a dramatic shift in the weather in comparison to the rain and wind that had come just days earlier.

But Will and JJ were unperturbed. Wanting to spend some time together out of their houses, they had decided to go out for breakfast at a little cafe in the city. The snowy air whipped at them as they walked down the street from where Will had parked his truck, and they were quick to make their way inside out of the cold.

Lowering the hood of her jacket as they walked inside, she glanced around the space, looking for somewhere for them to sit. As she did, Will's hand came to rest on the small of her back, making the butterflies in her stomach stir up yet again.

"Shall we sit in the booth over there? It's away from the door, it might be a bit warmer," Will said softly, pointing towards a booth towards the back of the shop. She nodded, starting towards it, shrugging her jacket off as she did.

They slid into the booth, both sitting on the same side as one of the waitresses came over and slid menus in front of them. "Can I get you guys anything to drink?"

"Yeah, I'll grab a double shot espresso," Will said with a smile.

"And a chai latte," JJ added. The waitress nodded, leaving them alone as she headed away to lodge their drink orders.

"Hope you're hungry, this place does a mean breakfast," Will chuckled, settling back against the chair. He stretched out his arms, one of them coming to rest around JJ's shoulders as she picked up the menu. The butterflies came back, filling her with a fluttery feeling of warmth. She relaxed against him, flicking easily through the menu. Even though their newfound relationship was in very early days, it already felt so natural just to sit with him like this. Granted, things had been ever so slightly awkward as the two of them tried to figure out how to go from just friends to something more. But right now, everything felt just fine.

A short while later, coffees were in front of them and breakfast was ordered - strawberry and Nutella crepes for JJ, bacon and eggs for Will.

"You ok?" Will asked softly as they settled in to wait for their food. "You've been pretty quiet this morning"

"Yeah," JJ replied, leaning back against him as she drummed her fingers against the side of her mug. "Just… thinking about us. Not in a bad way, I just… I don't want anything to change because we're dating, you know?"

"It's not going to," Will said gently. "You're still my best friend, Jayje, nothing changes that. All that's changed is now I can kiss you without you looking at me like I'm a perverted freak"

JJ laughed, tipping her head onto his shoulder as his hand came to rest on her upper arm. He gave her a little squeeze, and she felt so safe. He'd always made her feel protected. At under 5 foot tall, it wasn't hard to feel safe with him when he towered over her at nearly 6 foot.

"I know the last couple of days have been a little weird, maybe even a little awkward, especially with me letting the cat out of the bag, and so it probably feels like things are going to change, but I promise they won't. We just gotta… work out the new dynamics," Will chuckled. "But really, what's going to change? We're still gonna hang out. We're still gonna talk all the time. Your mom is still gonna force feed me lasagne-"

JJ snorted.

"- and my dad is still gonna proclaim that you're the favourite in my family. I just don't have to suffocate anymore under how much I like you"

JJ giggled. "You know, I still can't believe I didn't catch on. Thinking back on it, you definitely weren't overly subtle about it"

Will laughed, running his free hand through his hair. "Yeah, well, subtlety has never been a strong point of mine"

"Also Lani-"

"Don't even get me started on her," Will groaned as JJ laughed. "She threatened to tell you so many times, it's a wonder I'm still friends with her"

"So did you tell your mom about us when you got home the other day?" JJ asked, changing the subject as the waitress approached with their food.

"Yeah, more like my dad forced me to tell her. Not that I wouldn't have," Will chuckled.

"Hey, glad you made it home so soon, they say there's more rain and storms comin'," Janine said happily as her husband and son walked into the living room upon arriving home. "Did you get Sandy and Michael's roof fixed?"

"Yeah, it was no drama. Few loose shingles, couple that needed replacin'... easy job," William replied. Then he turned to Will, clapping his son on the shoulder. "Billy had an interestin' time though"

Will looked at his dad, his eyes narrowing.

"Oh yeah?" Janine asked, straightening up a little in her seat.

"Might explain why he broke up with Isabelle in such a hurry," William teased, yelping through laughter as his son elbowed him in the ribs. Janine shook her head at her husband, turning her attention to her son.

"JJ and I… we've decided to…," Will choked out, pausing for a moment and taking a deep breath. He didn't know why he was so nervous. He'd never had an issue telling them about girls before.

"Dating," he said finally, his voice getting quieter as he repeated the words JJ had said to her mother just a couple of hours earlier. "We're dating"

"Oh," Janine said, but the surprise in her voice didn't sound very genuine.

"What?" Will asked quickly.

"Well it's just… that's great news, honey," Janine chuckled, shaking her head. "Just not as earth shatterin' as you two made it out to be"

"NiNi, he kissed her in front of Michael," William laughed. "You should've seen the look on his and San's faces"

"Can we circle back to the not earth shattering comment?" Will said loudly over his father's laughter. "Momma, this is big for us"

"I know," Janine said warmly, rising from her chair and coming to stand before her son. "But I have eyes, Billy. I've seen the way you've looked at JJ every day since you first brought her over after school. If anything, I'm surprised it took you this long"

Will rolled his eyes as his mom laughed and patted his cheek.

"But if you're happy, I'm happy. JJ's a wonderful girl. And I know we raised you to do the right thing by her. If I ever found out you weren't treatin' that girl right, I would get to you before Michael Jareau did"

"Should I really be that scared of Michael?"

Janine laughed. "No, you'll be fine. We raised a gentleman"

She smiled up at her son, a teasing glint in her eye. "Do we need to hit the consent and protection conversation again?"

"No, no, you nailed that the first time!" Will said quickly, backing up as his mom laughed. "Thanks for the offer though"

"Anytime," Janine chuckled, shaking her head as he turned and left the room.

JJ grinned, shaking her head as their food was set down in front of them. Pulling herself away from Will, she took another sip of her latte and grabbed some cutlery from the center of the table.

"So everyone knew but me apparently," she teased. Will laughed, sprinkling some salt over his eggs.

"Apparently"

They ate in comfortable silence, occasionally pausing to comment on the things going on around them. When their plates were clear, JJ found herself returning to Will's arms, liking the comfort his embrace brought her.

It had been a little awkward, there was no denying that. But she also knew that everything was going to work out. They were still best friends who shared everything. They just had to navigate this transition period. Figure out what was going to work best for them. Because her life was anything but normal.

But Will had always been there. He knew what her schedule was like. He knew how crazy things could get. And if he still wanted to date her after the craziness London had brought, then surely he was going to stick it out through whatever came next.
