A/N: Short and sweet. I just finished watching the available episodes of Golden and I'm so motivated. You guys have NO idea what I have planned for JJ's future in the sport!
Thanksgiving. One of JJ's favourite holidays, if only for the insane amount of food her family always ended up having.
Her grandmother, Nandy, had flown in from Vermont, followed a day later by Jason and Katie coming up from Florida. JJ was ecstatic to see Nandy again, with the last time she had seen her being in London for the Olympics. Her brother had livened her mood with plenty of jokes in regards to her leg, and she was thrilled to have her family back together once again.
What she hadn't expected, however, was to be joined by the LaMontagnes. Her mother had surprised her with the news that morning, and while she was a little nervous about seeing Will, she was glad to have an opportunity to clear the air with him.
As she was still taking painkillers, she was a little exhausted after a morning of helping her mom around the kitchen as best as she could. Jason had helped her back up to her room so she could rest, and next thing she knew, she was being woken by the sound of someone gently tapping on her door. She forced her eyes open, turning her head towards the door where she saw Will standing awkwardly on the threshold.
"Hey," Will said softly. "Can I come in?"
"Yeah," JJ said softly, pulling herself up so she was sitting up a little. She watched as he walked into the room, coming to sit on the edge of the bed. He turned his body towards her, bringing a hand to rest on her cast.
"I've missed you"
JJ felt the familiar butterflies in her stomach fluttering around again as he gave her a small smile. "I've missed you too"
Will took a deep breath. "JJ, I... what I said... I didn't really mean it. I didn't know what I was saying"
"It's ok," JJ said quietly.
"No it's not, JJ, because I upset you and I undermined you," Will cut in, his voice firm but gentle. "You're a champion. You're brave, and determined, and so many other things that mean you can look after yourself. You have big goals and dreams that seem impossible, but somehow you make them happen, and that's something that I am so proud of you for. For me to make you doubt that... that's not fair"
"I know, but I snapped at you. I was frustrated, I still am, and I took it out on you," JJ said meekly, bringing her gaze up to meet Will's.
"Why are you frustrated?"
"Because I'm scared," JJ replied, the truth spilling from her lips faster than she could stop it. "I'm scared that I'm not going to be the athlete I was before this injury. There are so many amazing girls coming up into the senior ranks this year... what if I'm not good enough?"
Softening, Will leaned in, bringing his hand up to cup her cheek. "You are always good enough. For me, for your family, for Nick. You just have to go and do what you gotta do. Because you're amazing. And I doubted that, I put that feeling of second guessin' yourself into your heart. You don't need a reason to do this, JJ. If you enjoy it, and you want it, then all you need to do is be the best JJ that you can be"
JJ broke into a smile. "You sound like Nick"
Will chuckled. "Well maybe you should listen to us"
"I'm sorry I yelled at you"
Brushing her hair back from her face, Will leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to her lips. When he pulled back, he smiled, his thumb gently stroking her cheek. "I'm sorry for being a jerk"
"San, you've outdone yourself," Michael groaned as he sat back in his chair. "I feel like I'm gonna explode, but that meal was so good that I wanna keep eating"
Sandy laughed, tipping her head to rest on her husband's shoulder. "I'm glad it was good. There were a few moments where it had the potential to go downhill and I was ready to ring in an order to Dominos"
"Well, you saved it, that's what counts," William said with a laugh as he tipped his wine glass towards Michael and Sandy. "I think we should take a moment after that wonderful meal... say one thing that we're thankful for, and... maybe a goal we want to focus on for next year. If no-one minds? We used to do it with our kids every Thanksgivin'"
"That sounds lovely," Sandy said with a smile, leaning into Michael's side and lacing her fingers through his. "Why don't you go first?"
"Well... I'm thankful that I was able to have this week off to spend with my family and friends. Not often I get to be off during the holidays. And next year... I'm goin' to focus on my health and try to get in better shape. Then I can chase more criminals," William replied with a smirk. The table broke into laughter as Janine shook her head at her husband. "Alright... JJ, how about you go next?"
JJ shifted in her chair, smiling as Will brought a hand to the knee of her good leg. "I'm... I'm grateful for Will"
Sandy and Janine's faces broke into adoring smiles, while Jason mimed vomiting. JJ retaliated by immediately lifting a hand to flip him off.
"Hey, do you think you two could behave like adults for five minutes?" Sandy interjected, earning more laughter from the rest of the table.
JJ grinned, settling back beside Will. "I wouldn't be where I am today without his support. I'm a stronger person and a better gymnast because of him. He's also just the best boyfriend"
"Am I now?" Will asked with a cheeky smile.
"Don't get too cocky," JJ giggled, their parents laughing as she nudged his side. "And this year, I'm going to focus on getting stronger... and qualifying for Worlds again"
"That's my girl!" Michael crowed, reaching across the table with his fist. JJ laughed, bumping her fist against his in agreement, before sitting back in her chair and lacing her hand with Will's under the table.
"I'm grateful for you," Will said softly as Katie started sharing her own thankfulness with the group. JJ smiled, tipping her head and leaning on his shoulder. "We've got another amazin' year ahead, for sure"
