A/N: Little bit of a rough one, my muse is not there, but I'm keen to keep this story moving along. Lots has happened since I last updated - I've been promoted! I'm now a team leader, which is challenging but exciting!
Hope you guys enjoy this!
Cruising high in the sky, somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, the happy couple were lounging together in their adjoined suites. A movie was playing on Will's entertainment screen, but neither of them were watching it. It was a long journey home and they both felt too exhausted to impart the energy needed to focus on a movie.
"Hey," JJ said suddenly, breaking the silence they had been sitting in for some time. Wriggling around until she could see his face, she smiled up at him. "Can I tell you something?"
"Never," Will said, shaking his head. "Not allowed"
JJ laughed, jabbing a finger into his ribs, making him drop his teasing manner and laugh at his wife.
"I just… I know it's like… something I've probably told you a thousand times already, but I… I want you to know that you've always been my safe place to fall. I only truly realised it recently, but… you've always been there. Through the best and the worst parts of my life. No matter what was going on, no matter how bad things got, I always knew that you were there for me. And last year… last year got as bad as it did because I felt like I had lost you. Which sounds stupid and I hate sounding so dependent-"
"It's not," Will said gently, pressing a kiss to her temple. "You had a lot more goin' on last year than just the two of us splittin' up, so I don't think it's fair for you to feel that your reaction was entirely based off of that"
"I know," JJ said with a soft sigh, looking up at Will and giving him a small smile. "I'm not going to get all introspective and sappy because god knows how many times I've said it already, but… I'm so grateful for you. I really hope you know that"
Will chuckled. "I promise babe, I know. I'm always here for you. Whether you need me to listen while you cry, or hold your hair back while you throw up-"
JJ nudged him in the ribs again, making him laugh.
"-I'll always be there"
A sense of contentment washed over JJ, allowing her to fully relax down into Will's arms as they got comfy again. There were still seven hours ahead of them until they got to Dallas, and all they planned on doing until then was catching up on some much needed rest.
Honeymoon glow or not, the regular routine of life fell back into place almost immediately once they got home. After a couple of days recovering from jet lag, Will was back at work, and JJ was back in the gym, frantically working to fine tune her skills before the camp at the end of the month. It was only five days after arriving home that she and Nick were on another plane, heading down to the heat of Florida to join the rest of the national team for another intense training camp.
"AHHHHHHH!"
The scream was what welcomed JJ when she walked into the Flip Fest gym on the first morning of the camp. Seconds later, a flurry of dark hair and muscles hit her, arms being thrown around her neck as she struggled to keep her balance.
"I missed you!" Simone shrieked as JJ laughed and clutched onto her friend. "Oh my god look at you, you're so tan!"
"It won't last long," JJ laughed, pulling back from the younger girl and falling into step beside her as they walked back over to the training group. Nick was already there, shaking hands with Tom as he stood in a relaxed stance with the other coaches.
"The girls are excited to see you, but Grace is a little… nervous," Simone giggled quietly. "I think she's a bit of a fan"
"Oh," JJ said with a chuckle. At that moment, Tom looked away from Nick, breaking into a smile as he saw JJ.
"Now please do correct me if you prefer another name, but it is JJ, yes?" he asked warmly. JJ beamed.
"I don't go by anything else," she said with a little laugh, extending her hand to shake the older man's.
"Lovely to meet you after all these years," Tom said happily, accepting her gesture. "I'm excited to work with you this season, you've proven to be an extremely talented athlete over the years!"
JJ couldn't help the smile on her face even as she blushed.
"And I believe you just got married, so congratulations are definitely in order," Tom said warmly.
"I did, thank you"
"Oh yeah JJ, how was the wedding?" Riley cut in excitedly from the floor. Tom chuckled.
"I'll leave you girls to get caught up. We'll start our program in about twenty minutes"
JJ dropped down to the floor between Simone and Riley, stretching her legs out in front of her as the other girls looked at her eagerly. Some of the girls she had seen at camps before, but most of them were fresh faces. A few of the really young girls were looking at her with pure awe, something that reminded her just how much she herself had grown since London. She really was the leader of this largely young and inexperienced group of girls. And she knew exactly how they felt. For she had gone to camps with Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson, Chellsie Memmel among others, and she had been the young blood, looking up at the Olympic champions with nothing but disbelief and a desire to prove herself.
"So… tell us everything! What was the wedding like?" Ragan asked eagerly, leaning forward.
"It was amazing," JJ said, a happy smile crossing her face. "One of the best nights of my life. But before we get too much further, I need to know everyone's names"
The girls laughed.
"And she'll probably forget them all in ten minutes because she's Grandma," Simone piped up, earning a whack to the knee from JJ as the girls around them giggled.
Lunchtime was where they all split off. The younger juniors all claimed a large table on one side of the cafeteria, where they now sat giggling and mucking around as they ate. The middle ground of ages, the girls who had either just turned senior or were a year or two off, were sitting together not too far away, leaving Simone, JJ, Jordan, Margzetta, Riley, Ragan, Trinity, and Jade to claim another table together.
They were chatting lightly as JJ stuck into her lunch. She glanced up, having noticed someone hovering nearby. Her eyes met Grace, standing a little way away from the tables as she clutched her tray, clearly unsure of where she was welcome to sit. From what Riley and Ragan had said, it sounded like Grace got on well with both of them, but with JJ and Simone now at the table, she obviously didn't want to feel like an outsider.
"Hey Grace, come sit down," JJ said gently, smiling as she shuffled over to make some room for the younger girl. For a moment, Grace hesitated, before Simone turned from where she was sitting opposite JJ.
"JJ won't bite," she said with a grin. "It's Will who bites"
"Simone!" JJ admonished, reaching across the table to slap her friend's wrist, but she couldn't help laughing. Grace looked surprised, but a smile found its way onto her face as she slowly approached the table and dropped into the seat beside JJ.
"Please ignore anything she says about Will," JJ laughed, giving Simone a look. "She forgets you guys are all much younger and more innocent than us"
Grace laughed. "It's ok, you won't corrupt me anymore than my cousins already have"
"Am I wrong in guessing that you've been a little nervous around me today?" JJ said gently. She chuckled as Grace blushed. "I genuinely don't bite. I'm just a regular person like you guys"
Grace grinned, a little giggle escaping her. "Yeah, I… I've just been such a big fan ever since London… I actually can't believe you're still competing"
"Neither can I," JJ snorted, getting a laugh out of Grace and Simone.
"Will would love it if JJ retired now. More time for super hot post wedding sex," Simone said cheekily.
"Simone, honestly!" JJ admonished, lightly kicking Simone under the table as she laughed.
"Will's your husband, right?" Grace asked.
"Yeah"
"How tall is he? He looks super tall in your photos"
"Like… just under 6 feet? And I'm 4'11," JJ chuckled. "I don't know how it works, but it does"
"Have you been training all year? Because you're doing some really insane skills," Grace added.
"Sort of. I was still recovering from my Achilles injury earlier this year… I really only started properly training about eight weeks ago. It's been a pretty big scale up though. Luckily I'm not finding it too hard, but we'll see how my body feels after camp"
"You'll need a nice long massage from Will," Simone quipped, only to get immediately thumped in the side by JJ as the other girls laughed.
"I'm going to find a way to put you on verbal lockdown," JJ said with a grin as she shook her head. "You're a total liability"
