Dean called Bobby and let him know that Kate was at the ER.
Bobby drove over with extra clothes and some food. When he made it to Kate's room, Dean was sitting on her bed letting her rest her head on his arm. "How is she?"
Dean frowned. "In and out of it."
"Are they keeping her over night?"
Dean nodded. "Maybe for a few days. I don't know yet."
Bobby sat on the bed and gently touched her face. "How are you feeling?"
Kate looked at him but felt like her head was floating. She tried to talk but was just too tired.
Bobby looked over to Dean. "Give me the run down."
Dean shrugged. "She had hives at school so I picked her up and brought her here. She was hysterical. She has some kind of infection but they don't know what kind yet. She had an allergic reaction too, which caused the hives."
Bobby made eye contact with Kate. "Do they know what caused it?"
Kate started crying again and Dean shifted her to sit on his lap and lay her head on his chest. He rolled the sleeve of her shirt up to show Bobby her arm.
Bobby cringed. "What happened?"
Dean sighed. "She hasn't told me and I'm pretty sure she compelled me to stop asking questions earlier."
Kate stiffened.
He put his hand on her head and pulled it back to his chest. "I don't know what you did but right now you just need to rest."
"What did she have an allergic reaction to?" Bobby asked.
Kate shook her head and tried to sit up.
"Rest. We are going to have to talk about what happened. You are sick and I know you feel bad so just relax." Dean said.
Kate stopped fighting him and buried her head in his chest.
"She took some antibiotics when she realized that her arm was beginning to get infected." Dean said, looking at Bobby.
Bobby sighed. "And where did she get those?"
Dean made a face. "She took them from the cabinet and also some of the pain meds from when her leg was injured."
Bobby angrily rubbed the back of his neck and took his hat off. "Why would you go and do a fool thing like that?"
Kate turned and looked at him and started crying again. "I didn't want to go to the hospital."
"Well that worked out for you, didn't it?" Bobby said.
Dean reached for the blanket at the foot of the bed and wrapped it around Kate's shoulders. He brushed the hair back from her eyes and got her to drink a few sips of water. "You are probably going to be stuck here a little while so anything you need to tell us, you need to tell us now. The doctors need all the relevant information to treat you."
Kate shook her head.
"I'm not going to lie and say you aren't in a world of trouble once you are released but right now you aren't." Bobby said.
Kate still shook her head.
"You wanted to wait to tell me until we got home. Well, it is just us in here. No one is going to yell. No one is going to over react. Everyone will have plenty of time to process stuff and calm down." Dean coaxed.
"You will hate me." Kate said, softly.
Dean squeezed her. "No we wont."
She looked up at Dean and then over to Bobby. "Do you promise not to hate me?"
Both Bobby and Dean agreed to that promise.
A nurse came in and hooked up something to Kate's iv bag. She checked Kate's arm and said the doctor would be back in a little bit.
Kate really wanted to just drift off to sleep but her guilt was crushing her.
Dean put her beside him and made her drink a bit more water. "I'm all ears, kiddo."
Kate pulled her knees to her chest and rested her head on them. "When I was at Ellie's house, I couldn't sleep. I used my abilities to go to Hellen's house." She paused when Dean's body stiffened.
"Go on." He said.
She wiped tears from her face. "It was just in a vision. I just checked it out."
Dean sighed. "Keep talking."
Kate swallowed hard. "Her office was pretty much gone. I guess that is where she did the spell. I was going to leave but found a picture frame that caught my eye. I took it down and there was a book in it. When I went to grab the book, that is when I got burned."
Dean shifted so that he was turned toward her. "You got burned in a vision?"
Kate nodded. "I don't know how but when I went in person I-" She froze in panic. She wasn't going to tell them she went to the house.
Bobby scooted close to her. "Excuse me. When you went in person?"
Kate stared at him with wide eyes. "I-uh."
Dean rubbed his temples. "Just spit it out."
"Well.. um.. we went to the park and I thought maybe I should see if the book was real." She hid her face again.
"So you got burned in a vision and you thought it was safe to go into the actual house?" Dean asked.
Kate shook her head. "No. I knew it-" She stopped again.
"You knew what?" Dean pressed.
Kate shook her head. She couldn't get her breath and felt like her chest was going to implode.
Dean sighed and pulled her back onto his lap. He helped her calm down from her panic. "Please just tell us everything. That burn is a supernatural burn so normal medicine may not even help. We are going to talk about all of it but right now, all that is going to happen is just talking. We will listen and ask questions. I can't promise that you wont get an ear full but I'm staying right here with you."
"I knew it wasn't safe." Kate said finally.
"Why did you go?"
"I don't know. I wanted to see the book." She said sadly.
"After everything that happened, why would you check out her house in the vision in the first place?" Bobby asked.
Kate shrugged. "I don't know."
"You're going to have to come up with something better than that." Dean said. "But you have time. What burned you?"
Kate looked at her arm. "A hand... I think."
That sent alarm bells off in Bobby and Dean's heads. What if Hellen was still alive? What if it was her spirit in the house? How could she burn Kate so badly from so far away? Why hadn't anything attacked when Kate entered the house?
"So you got hurt, hid it and went to the house the next day?" Dean asked.
Kate nodded. "I couldn't tell Ellie or her mom because they don't know about the monsters and stuff. How could I explain how I got a burn while still being at their house?"
"You could have called one of us." Dean said.
Kate slumped. "I know it was stupid. I know going to the house was stupid. All of it was stupid but by the time I realized how stupid it was, I couldn't tell anyone."
"You could have told us as soon as you got back to the house." Bobby said.
Kate sighed. "I was afraid you would be mad."
"Well you got that right but we would have worked it out." Bobby added.
"Why did you take the medicine?" Dean asked.
Kate sniffled. "My arm was hurting and I remembered that I may have some of the medicine left for the pain. The antibiotics were after that. My arm was getting swollen and I felt bad. I didn't know burns could get infected."
"All the more reason to tell us instead of hiding it." Dean could feel his heart twisting. "Do you realize how dangerous that is?"
Kate looked at him. "I didn't know I was going to be allergic to it."
Dean shook his head. "No. Medications have to be monitored. When you were on the pain medication, one of us was always with you. That stuff can be hard on an adult. You have to be incredibly careful not to take too much. The antibiotics are a whole separate issue. You can't play around with stuff like that."
Kate felt like an idiot. "I'm sorry."
Bobby looked like he was going to say something but stopped himself. He was understandably livid. Yes, she had lied and stolen medication but he was frustrated that she would risk her life so easily.
Dean felt the same way that Bobby did. He could feel her shaking and saw the tired look on her face. He laid her head down on the pillow and put his flannel over her. "You can tell us the rest later. You need to sleep."
Kate looked at him. "You aren't mad?"
Dean nearly laughed. "Oh, I'm mad but I'm also worried."
Kate broke down again and covered her face.
Dean sat back down and patted her hip. "Let's see what the doctor says. I need you to rest up and get better as soon as possible so I can kick your ass when we get out of here."
Kate looked at him and scrunched her face.
Dean smiled. "Kate, I'm giving you a hard time. I hate seeing you sick. I hate seeing you in pain. Right now all I care about is getting you the right meds and making sure your arm doesn't fall off."
Kate gave him a weak smile. "Okay."
He lowered the head of the bed and tucked the blanket around her. "Get some rest. I'm going to stretch my legs and get some coffee then I'm going to come back to hang out with you."
Kate nodded and closed her eyes.
Bobby walked Dean to the door. "I'm going to make some phone calls while she sleeps. Maybe Missouri has some thoughts about being burned while in a vision."
Dean looked over at Kate. "That burn looks pretty nasty. I'll make sure you get a look at it when they uncover it again."
Bobby nodded. "You just run out and do what you need to do. I'll keep an eye on her."
Dean smirked. "Keep both eyes on her and don't blink."
Bobby chuckled. "Sage advice." He shut the door behind Dean and sat down in one of the chairs. He scratched his chin and watched her fall asleep. Sam and Dean were rowdy and rambunctious at that age but Kate added an extra level of difficult. She had a knack for getting sucked into supernatural things and having her life on the line.
Dean walked out to the impala and sat down in the front seat. He rested his head on the steering wheel and swore to himself. He couldn't believe that she put herself in danger like that. He couldn't believe that he, once again, didn't notice that she was getting herself into trouble. He had to do better. She wasn't Sam. She was something else. He thought about Sam going off to college and not having his help. He leaned back in the seat and took a deep breath. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number. He bounced his leg and drummed his fingers as he waited.
"Hey, Dean." Came a gravelly voice from the speaker.
Dean didn't speak right away.
"Son, is everything okay?" John asked.
Dean cleared his throat and tried to keep his voice from breaking. "Dad, I need to talk to you." He told John about what was going on with Kate and his worries for her health.
John was surprisingly calm and listened. He asked questions about the medications and how Kate was doing.
"Dad, I am scared." Dean said.
John sighed. "I know, son. She is in good hands." John was worried as well but wasn't there to see her. "How long ago did she get burned?"
Dean thought about it. "Five or so days."
John groaned. "It is a wonder that she didn't get this sick sooner."
Dean put his head back on the wheel. "Is she going to be okay?"
"Yeah, son. She should be. Do I need to come back?"
"No. Bobby and I can handle this. I just needed to get my head straight." Dean said.
John asked to be updated and told Dean to call back if he needed to.
Dean grabbed some coffee from the cafeteria and brought it back the room. "Is she still asleep?"
Bobby looked over at her. "Seems to be, although she keeps mumbling."
Dean walked over and sat down beside her. He put a hand on her face. He didn't like how warm she was to the touch. He pulled the blanket down off her shoulders and sucked in a breath.
Bobby jumped up. "What is it?"
Dean yanked the blankets down and rolled her over. He pulled the alarm and spoke softly to Kate. "Hey, wake up. Come on. Open your eyes."
Two nurses came in and asked what was wrong.
Dean held up Kate's good arm and pointed to red speckles that were covering her skin. "This wasn't here a few minutes ago."
The nurses paged one of the doctors.
Dean stumbled back to one of the chairs and wrung his hands.
Bobby put a hand on his shoulders. "She's going to be okay."
Dean wanted to scream. He wanted to punch the wall or something. The kid couldn't catch a break and once again, he was afraid of losing her. He forced himself to be rational.
Minutes passed as people moved in and out of the room. Finally one of the doctors stepped to the side to speak to Bobby and Dean. "It looks like the infection spread to her blood stream. We got the blood cultures back so we can treat her for the type of bacteria that she has. Good catch." He said and looked at Dean.
Dean didn't say anything. He just looked at her.
"What do we do now?" Bobby asked.
"We are going to keep her overnight. Depending on how she responds to the medication we can decide on further treatment tomorrow." The doctor answered.
Once the room was clear momentarily Dean asked Bobby to call Missouri. "We need a plan B if this doesn't work."
Bobby left the room to make the phone call.
Dean went back and sat down next to Kate. He was worried. He held her hand and spoke to her quietly.
Someone came in and put something into the iv. The door to the room was propped open as people came in and out.
Dean lost track of time. Everything was a blur. He understood in that moment what drove Brian to sell his soul. He wasn't going to but he understood.
Kate woke up and the room was dark. She tried to sit up but her body hurt. She started crying because she didn't know where she was.
Dean picked his head up and sat down next to her. "Hey kiddo."
Kate blinked her eyes. "Where am I?"
"The hospital. We are staying over night." Dean said.
Kate couldn't figure out what had been real and what was a dream. She had been in and out of sleep.
"Do you remember what happened?"
Kate shook her head.
"You got hives at school and I picked you up. We wound up here." Dean said.
Kate groaned. "I remember that part."
"You are really sick because the infection went into your blood. So they are keeping you a bit longer to make sure they get on top of it before it gets worse."
Kate started crying. "I'm sorry."
Dean put her on his lap and wrapped his arms around her. "None of that right now."
"Am I in trouble?"
Dean was quiet for a few moments. "Not right now."
Kate pulled the blanket up to her face. "Later?"
Dean rested his chin on her head. "We can talk about it later."
Kate listened to his heartbeat and drifted back to sleep.
Dean's neck and back were killing him by the time the sun came up but he would gladly hold her the entire day if it meant that she would sleep. He had to put her down when the nurse came in to check on her though.
The nurse hid a smile. She thought that it was sweet the way he cared for Kate.
Sam showed up with Bobby that morning. He brought Dean a change of clothes because Dean refused to leave Kate's side.
"Hey Sammy." Dean said tiredly.
"You look like crap." Sam said with a smile.
Dean threw a balled up piece of paper at him. "Thanks."
They talked for a bit before Kate woke up again.
Kate looked around and smiled when she saw Sam.
Sam kissed her on top of the head. "You must really like this place."
Kate rolled her eyes. "I hate it."
He gave her a small smile and told her he would be back after school.
Kate said bye and went back to resting. She still felt like crud but also didn't want to answer questions. She wondered how much she had told them.
Kate had been released from the hospital and finished up the medicine they had sent home. Her arm was healing and she no longer felt sick. She had a stack of homework from her teacher and Sam was helping her work through it. She missed being in class although she didn't always enjoy it. "When will you know about college?"
Sam looked at the calendar. "Any day now I guess."
Kate squeaked. "That is exciting. I just know you will get in."
Sam sighed. He was excited too but dreading that conversation.
Dean had reluctantly left a few days prior to help some other hunters.
Kate jumped up when she heard the car and busted out the front door. "Dean!"
Dean caught her midair. "Hey! Look at you."
Kate grinned. "I'm not sick anymore."
"How is the arm?"
Kate pulled up her sleeve. "Much better. I don't have to wear bandages or anything."
Dean high fived her. "Did Sam help with that?"
Kate nodded. "Just a little bit."
Dean scooped her up and carried her back inside. "Hey Bobby, do we have some grub or should I go get some? I am starving."
Bobby looked around the corner. "Well hello to you too."
Dean clapped him on the back. "Hey, Bobby."
"I haven't started cooking yet." Bobby said, holding up his hands that were covered in grease.
Dean turned back and looked at Kate. "How about me and Kate run down to the diner and pick up something?"
Bobby gave Dean a look and agreed.
Sam started to say he would go too but caught Dean's eye when he walked back down the hallway.
Kate slipped her shoes on and nearly skipped to the car. "Can I sit in the front seat?"
Dean ruffled her hair. "Go for it."
As they drove Kate began to realize how quiet Dean was. She watched him as he tapped his fingers along the wheel. "What is wrong?"
Dean looked at her. "We need to talk."
Kate's heart dropped. "About what?"
Dean raised a brow. "You know about what."
Kate licked her lips and shifted in her seat. "What about it?"
Dean pulled over near a row of trees and killed the engine. "I need to ask you a question and I need you to be honest with me. No matter what your answer is, I'm not going to get angry. I just need to know."
Kate was hesitant but asked what the question was.
"When you did all of that were you trying to kill yourself?"
Kate was floored. "What?"
Dean looked at her with sad eyes. "Was it like with the hellhounds? Were you trying to hurt yourself."
Kate hung her head. "No."
He tilted her head up. "Look at me. If you are having those thoughts please tell me. I promise I'm not going to be angry."
Kate looked into his eyes. "I knew it may be dangerous but I was trying to be careful. I didn't want to be sick."
Dean leaned his head back and let out a breath.
Kate touched his arm. "I promise. I know I messed up. I wasn't thinking clearly and took risks but I wasn't trying to get hurt."
He put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her to him. "You scared the hell out of me."
Kate looked at her hands. "I'm sorry."
Dean let her go and turned the car back on. He pulled back onto the road and drove to the diner. "I want to know why you did it."
Kate chewed on her fingers. "I don't know."
He glanced over at her. "Not good enough."
Kate slid down in the seat. "I still have so many questions about everything. You don't tell me much about the hunts you go on and I was curious. This was something that I could do."
Dean rubbed his face. "You are a kid. I don't tell you everything because hunting is dangerous. It is scary and the stuff we hunt is nasty. People get hurt."
Kate tried to read his face. "I didn't think anything would happen since it was just a vision."
"So you essentially went on a hunt, alone and unprepared." Dean said.
Kate cringed. "Yeah, I guess."
"Even skilled hunters don't do that." Dean said.
Kate hung her head. "I know."
Dean went inside and ordered the food to go before walking back out to the car.
"Why didn't you tell someone after you got hurt?" He asked.
Kate sighed. "I was at Ellie's and kept it a secret so they wouldn't ask questions. After that I kind of panicked."
"Why?"
"I knew you guys would be mad at me."
Dean turned toward her. "We would have been upset but much less upset than we are now."
Kate couldn't fault his logic.
"You hid the injury because you were afraid we would be mad. Then you tried to treat the burn by yourself. Am I caught up?"
Kate nodded.
"You know, when you snuck around and did things to save your dad, I understood to an extent. I got why you would be reckless although I didn't condone it. This is different though. You weren't hiding things to benefit anyone. You were hiding purely because you didn't want us to find out.. right?" Dean asked, looking at her.
Kate put her head in her hands. "Yes."
"Did you think about what could happen when you took those meds?" He asked.
Kate sighed. "Not really. I know they can be dangerous but I didn't know about the antibiotics."
"Did you know you shouldn't go into the medicine cabinet and grab stuff without an adult?"
Kate frowned. "Yes." She felt like the worst person in the world.
Dean saw the waitress wave and got out to grab the food. When he got back in the car he asked Kate if she had anything to add.
Kate was heart broken. "No."
"That covers the main choices, it doesn't even touch the amount of lying and just how many times you risked your life." Dean added.
Kate started crying but tried to hide it.
Dean pulled her into a hug and kissed the top of her head. "We are going to sit and talk about it while we eat dinner. I'm not happy. None of us are but don't think for a second that you aren't loved."
Kate sniffled. "Thanks."
He let go of her and reached over to wipe away some of the tears with his shirt sleeve. He reversed the car and headed to Bobby's house. "By the way, where is the book?"
Kate blushed. "I can get it when we get back."
Dean smirked. "You are going to show me so you can't use the same hiding spot again."
Kate scrunched her nose. "How do you do that?"
"Do what?"
"You always know when I'm hiding something and think about stuff like that." She said.
Dean grinned. "Let's just say that you are too much like me."
Kate smiled. "What does that mean?"
Dean flicked her ear. "It means you are going to get real familiar with that ruler."
Kate rubbed her ear and gave him a look. "If I'm like you, that means you have to have extra sympathy."
Dean snorted. "Not at all. You are only allowed to copy the good parts of my personality."
"Does being a smart ass count as one of the good parts?"
Dean flicked her ear again. "Language. I couldn't beat that out of you if I tried." He gave her a grin. "And I wouldn't want to."
Kate shrugged her shoulders. "I guess it is part of my charm."
He smirked and put his hand back on the wheel. He didn't know how but he was going to make sure that she grew up to be better than him. He may wind up in a padded cell at some point but she was going to be just fine.
