Bobby had pulled a little bit of information in the hour he had spent digging. None of it was overly helpful but it was as start.

Dean walked into the living room and asked to talk to Taylor.

Kate reluctantly got up and went to find Sam.

"How are you feeling?" Dean asked.

Taylor shrugged. "Okay I guess."

"Do you think you are up for answering questions?"

Taylor dropped his head. "I really shouldn't."

Dean nodded. "I know how you feel but we can't help you if we don't know all that is going on."

Taylor looked at him. "I don't need help."

Dean smirked. "I beg to differ."

Taylor thought about it. "If I tell you, will you promise that it stays between us?"

Dean studied him. "I can promise I'm not going to make a bunch of phone calls behind your back."

Taylor sighed. "Some times my dad gets angry or thinks people are going to get us and some times he kind of loses it."

"Why did he hit you?" Dean asked.

Taylor shrugged. "He was already pretty jump and I just yelled back at him. I hate having to sneak around and move every time he gets paranoid."

"What is he paranoid about?"

"Some stuff happened when he was deployed. I know some of his buddies got killed and he was held captive for a little bit. When he got back he had a hard time adjusting to life here. He started a job working for the government but I really don't know what he does. He goes after bad guys but he doesn't talk about it. When I was two someone broke into our house and hurt my mom and brother. Since then my dad has made me train like one of his soldiers." Taylor said sadly.

Dean nodded. "Something like that happened when I was little too. My dad makes sure we can protect ourselves. It isn't a fun way to grow up."

Taylor shook his head. "I don't mind the training part. I just wish my dad wouldn't get so angry."

"My dad had some PTSD from the war too. It doesn't excuse what your dad did. I just sympathize. Do you know what kind of bad guys your dad hunts?" Dean asked.

Taylor shook his head. "I'm not allowed to ask."

"Is your dad always violent?"

"No, he is nice sometimes. When he snaps he doesn't even act like my dad." Taylor said.

Dean rubbed his face. "My dad thinks it would be a good idea for him to talk to yours."

Taylor's eyes flew open. "No. He can't. My dad will kill me if he knows I told you anything."

Dean grimaced. "We can't let you go home knowing that you could be in danger. They can talk on common ground since they both served."

Taylor slumped.

"When your dad gets angry do you notice anything off? Like, cold spots, weird smells?" Dean asked.

Taylor looked at Dean. "No. Why?"

Dean shrugged. "Just covering my bases."

Taylor leaned forward. "Like ghosts?"

Dean snapped his head back toward Taylor. "Why ghosts?"

"Do you think they are real? Kate said..."

Dean sighed heavily. "Katelyn, get in here."

Kate shuffled in from the kitchen. "Yes?"

"Kate said what?" Dean asked.

Taylor glanced between the two. "Uh, she said you can see your breath if there is a ghost nearby."

Dean turned toward her. "Do you want to elaborate?"

Kate's mouth dropped open. "Fun fact?"

Dean pointed to the coffee table for her to sit down. "What else have you said?"

Kate blushed. "Not much."

Taylor furrowed his brows. "All of that stuff is just legend. There is no way that salt hurts them."

Kate avoided Dean's eyes.

"In what conversation did this come up in?" Dean asked.

Kate shuffled her feet. "One of the kids at school said their house was haunted. He was saying a bunch of stuff and I just made a comment about how to tell if it was real and what to do if it was."

Dean pinched the bridge of his nose. "Seriously?"

Taylor scooted toward Kate. "Are they real?"

Dean narrowed his eyes at Kate.

"Are the vampires real too?"

Kate squeaked.

"Did you not learn a valuable lesson with Hannah?" Dean asked.

Kate looked at him. "Not the same thing."

"Come on someone tell me. Is that your family secret?" Taylor asked.

Dean leaned back.

Taylor looked at him and then to Kate. "I told you what happened with my dad. You said your family had a secret too. You have to tell me."

Kate slowly nodded her head.

Taylor's eyes got big.

Dean shot her a look. "Kate."

Kate shifted. "We hunt bad things."

Dean sat forward. "You do not hunt anything."

Kate rolled her eyes. "Yet."

Taylor was excited. "You hunt ghosts? Like in those tv shows?"

Dean shook his head. "It isn't like the TV shows. This is stuff you don't need to know about."

Kate shrugged. "If he takes it badly I can just erase his memory."

Taylor gasped. "You can do that?"

Dean gave her an exasperated growl. "Seriously kid."

Taylor nudged Dean. "I need details."

Dean sighed. "You can't say anything to anyone."

Taylor nodded.

"Something supernatural killed my mom when I was four. My dad has been after the thing since then. Some supernatural things are real and some aren't. We hunt the things that are real so they don't hurt other people. It is dangerous and that is all you need to know about it." Dean said.

Taylor was shocked. "Werewolves?"

"This isn't story time. I gave you all the information you need." Dean said.

"Did a werewolf get your leg?" Taylor asked.

Dean tilted his head at Kate.

Kate blushed. "I said it was a bear."

Taylor put his chin on his hands. "It wasn't a bear so what was it?"

Dean put his hand up. "That is a story for another time."

Taylor frowned. "Okay but are witches real?"

Dean glared at Kate.

Kate grimaced and touched Taylor's hand. "Let it go for now."

Taylor shrugged and sat back.

Dean and Kate stepped outside and left Taylor sitting on the couch.

"Could you not go around telling all the little kids about what we do?" Dean hissed.

Kate stammered. "I didn't. I mean people talk about that stuff all the time. They didn't know it was true. Besides now Taylor trusts us enough to let us help him."

Dean grabbed her arm and swatted her once.

"Ow. What was that for?" Kate whined.

Dean smirked. "For being a pain in the ass." He said and went to find John.

Kate crinkled her nose. "You're welcome."

Dean waved her off. "Go make sure your boy doesn't get into anything."

Kate stuck her tongue out at him but went back inside.

Taylor patted the seat beside him. "So, you hunt monsters?"

Kate chewed her lip. "I stay out of the way while my family does."

Taylor sat back. "That is really cool. I always knew you were different."

Kate shrugged. "I don't always like being different."

"Me either." He said.

Kate offered him a drink. "I can get something for your side too."

Taylor smiled. "My side is okay but I'll take the lemonade." He took the cup from her and took a sip. "How did you learn to sew people up?"

Kate sighed. "I feel useless sometimes because I can't go out and fight so I decided to learn how to mend."

They talked for quite a while before Kate got on the subject of books. "Oh! There is a really cool Celtic book. Come on I'll show you."

Taylor followed her to the bottom of the stairs. "I'm not going up there."

Kate furrowed her brows. "Why?"

"Your family is nice and everything but I value my life." Taylor said with a smile.

"Oh. Ohhhh right. I'll bring it down stairs." Kate said. "Sam, can I show Taylor your book?"

Sam gave her a look. "I don't think that is a good idea."

"He already knows stuff." Kate said.

Sam sighed. "Did you tell him stuff?"

Kate grimaced. "Well Dean knows he knows stuff."

Sam handed her the book. "He may look at it but do not tell him what it says."

Kate thanked him and ran down stairs with it. "I found this at an old bookshop and it looked cool."

Taylor took it and gently ran his fingers over the cover. "This must be ancient."

Kate smiled. "I think so."

He flipped through the pages and then gave it back. "You guys must have all kinds of stuff about monsters."

Kate bounced on her toes. "We have books and research but we also have weapons for different kinds of creatures." She pulled his hand toward one of the stashes. She opened the cupboard but pointed out the holy water, salt and different herbs.

Taylor felt uneasy. "No, don't pick that up."

Kate pulled her hand away from a knife. "Why?"

Taylor shifted. "My dad would get really angry if I messed with stuff."

Kate blinked. "Oh, you are right. I have my own knife and am not supposed to mess with those."

They both jumped when someone cleared their throat.

"Oh! Hi Dean." Kate squeaked.

"Why are you in that cabinet?" He asked.

Kate licked her lips. "Um, showing Taylor some stuff."

Dean gave Taylor a slight nudge. "Taylor here is a good influence. We would have gotten angry at you for messing with those. Shut the cabinet and get back out here."

Kate blushed deeply. "Okay."

John was on the phone when they walked back to the living room but hung up shortly after.

Taylor was anxious and didn't know what to say or do.

John scrubbed his head and pointed to the couch. "We have a bit of a plan but I would like to run it by you first."

Taylor nodded. "Yes, sir."

"I only know as much as you have told me and my own experience with being overseas. Things happen over there that can really mess with your head. I am willing to speak to your father and get him some help. I do not know all of what is going on so I can't make any big promises but think that I can help." John said.

Taylor sucked in a huge breath. "He is going to be so mad at me."

John nodded. "I will make sure that this doesn't fall on you. If I do not think you can safely go home, you will stay here."

Taylor blinked slowly. "I don't know about this."

"You have the final say but this is something that I think needs to be done." John added.

Kate squeezed Taylor's hand. "You should trust him."

Taylor reluctantly agreed to the plan.

John pulled Dean to the side. "I'm taking Kate with me."

Dean jerked his head back. "Dad-"

"I'm not up for explaining everything to you. She is going with me. You and Sam are going to keep an eye on Taylor." John said.

Dean nodded. "Yes sir."

John grabbed a few things from his duffle and went out to the truck.

Dean told Kate what John said and told her to grab her shoes and go.

Kate wanted to stay but knew not to argue.

Dean put a hand on Taylor's shoulder. "Are you okay hanging with me and Sammy for a bit?"

Taylor grimaced. "I guess so."

Dean smirked. "We don't bite. I've got some extra ammo if you want to target practice."

Taylor's eyes lit up. "Yeah, I'd like that!"

Dean knocked on the door to let Sam know what was going on.

"He took Kate with him? Is that a good idea? She doesn't normally follow orders as well as he likes." Sam said.

Dean shrugged. "I guess we will see."

Kate climbed in the truck and put her bag in the floor. "Why am I going with you?"

John glanced at her and hit the road. "I may need your assistance."

Kate tilted her head.

"Guys like this do not trust anyone. They are jumpy and can't let your guard down. If I cannot gain his trust, I may need you to do your thing." John said.

Kate nodded.

"Now, you are going to follow orders. If I tell you to stay in the truck you will do exactly that."

"Yes sir." Kate answered.

"I'm trusting you to listen and only do what I tell you to." John said with an edge to his voice.

Kate looked at him. "Yes sir."

He smirked. "I don't think I need to threaten you, do I?"

Kate shook her head. "No." She squeaked.

"Good."

Kate stared out the window as the trees zipped by. "Do you think he is a bad person?"

John grunted. "I don't know. He may not be a bad person. He has made some bad choices. You know how your dad was when he was losing his head."

Kate frowned. "Yes. What do you think happened?"

John cleared his throat. "That is what I am going to figure out."

Kate stopped asking questions and sat back. She wanted Taylor to be okay. "If I tell you something, will you get mad at me?"

John glanced at her. "I guess that depends on what you are about to tell me."

She wrung her hands. "I have a bit of a theory but I haven't said anything because I didn't understand it."

John sighed. "I wont get mad."

"I think that when someone is touched by something supernatural, it leaves a mark." She said.

He furrowed his brows. "What kind of mark?"

"I don't know. Like a smudge. That is why people bump into each other. Like it is easier to find someone who has had something bad happen if you have had something bad happen to." She added.

"Why would I get mad about that?" John asked.

Kate sighed. "I think I can see the smudges."

"You can see them?" John asked.

Kate shrugged. "I don't know how to explain. I just know something is different."

John smirked. "Well that could prove useful."

Kate sighed. "I think Taylor's dad was touched."

John nodded. "What makes you think that?"

"I'm sorry. I don't know how to explain." She said.

John patted her leg. "Okay, I believe you."

"Maybe if I focus that ability I can learn how to see the difference between humans and monsters." Kate said as she perked up.

John side eyed her. "Slow your roll. One thing at a time. Talk to Missouri about it and don't go off attempting anything."

Kate shrunk and nodded. "Yes sir."

John stopped in front of a house. "Is that his dad's truck?"

Kate nodded. "His mom's car is gone though."

John scratched his chin. "Okay. You stay here. I'll send you a message or signal with my hand if I want you to approach."

"Yes sir." Was all that Kate said.

John walked to the door and knocked. He saw the blinds move and took several steps back so he wasn't crowding the door.

A man opened the door a few inches and asked what John wanted.

"My daughter knows your son. I was just wondering if I could take a few moments of your time." John said.

Craig, Taylor's dad walked out onto the porch and shut the door. "What is this about?"

John strategically entered into the conversation in a way that would appeal to Craig. He told him about his own military career and got him to relax a little. He knew he wouldn't get to the meat of the problem right away.

Kate stared out the window at John and watched for a sign. She saw him signal and hoped that she interpreted it correctly. She approached slowly and stood beside John.

"Introduce yourself. Don't just stand there." John bit.

Kate stiffened but reached her hand out. "Hi, my name is Kate and I'm friend's with Taylor." Kate pulled her hand back and looked at John.

John and Craig exchanged a few more words before John told Kate to say goodbye and go back to the truck.

She shook his hand again. "It was nice to meet you. My dad is a safe person and can help you." She pushed the thought into Craig's mind and walked back to the truck.

A half hour later John opened the truck door and got in.

"Did you find anything out?" Kate asked.

John turned the truck on and pulled away. "I did. You did good."

Kate sighed. "So snapping at me was part of the plan?"

John chuckled. "Take the compliment."

Kate shrugged. "What did you find out?"

John looked at her. "I'd like to get back to the house."

Kate slumped. "Please tell me. I have been sitting in the truck for almost an hour."

"That is part of the job. Stop asking me about it. I will discuss it when we get back to Bobby's." John replied.

Kate sat up straight and looked out the window. John was a tough person to read and he went from caring to cold so quickly that she never know which side she was going to get.

John stopped in front of Bobby's. "When we go inside, you are going to take Taylor and go for a walk or something."

Kate looked at him. "You said you would discuss it when we got here!"

John leveled her with a glare ."The correct reply is yes sir."

Kate opened her door and got out. She wanted to snap back at him but wasn't that stupid. She turned to him with sad eyes. "Once you have a chance to talk to the others, will I be looped in?"

John softened. "Yes."

She sighed and went to find Taylor. "What are you guys doing?"

Dean turned. "Seeing how good of a shot Taylor is."

Taylor waved at her.

Kate smiled. "Well, how good is he?"

"Ehhh." He said dramatically.

Taylor huffed. "I don't have my own range in my backyard."

Dean motioned for Kate to stand beside him. "Go ahead."

Kate focused and hit the targets with no problem.

Taylor leaned over the fence to get a better look. "Whoa!"

Kate shrugged. "Maybe you could come over and practice more often."

Dean snorted. "Don't get ahead of yourself."

Taylor looked at Kate. "How did it go?"

Kate rolled her eyes. "I don't know. Of course he isn't telling me squat. I-"

Dean poked her in the ribs and shoved her shoulder. "Hey. How'd it go."

John grunted and flicked his hand for Dean to follow him.

Dean took the gun back and went inside.

Kate walked over and sat down on one of the old cars. "Tell me about your brothers."

Taylor sat down beside her. "The one that is still at home is 16. He stays at his friend's a lot. His name is David. The others are in their 20s and I don't see them often. Mike is away at college and Dan is married with two kids. Kyle is in the army and is deployed right now. He is the nicest."

Kate frowned. "You aren't close to any of them?"

Taylor shook his head. "Nope. They all kind of forgot I still live at home. Tell me about yours."

Kate shrugged. "You have met them."

"They care about you." Taylor said.

Kate nodded. "They are good brothers."

"Are they your half brothers? My oldest three have a different mom." Taylor said.

Kate shifted. "Um."

Taylor tilted his head. "What?"

"They aren't really my brothers."

Taylor furrowed his brows. "What do you mean?"

"I'm adopted. John isn't my real dad. I lost my parents and Sam and Dean just took me in like I was their sister." Kate said.

Taylor looked at her. "That was nice of them. What happened to your parents?"

Kate frowned. "My mom died when I was a baby and my dad died last year."

Taylor put his hand on her leg. "I'm sorry. I didn't know. Is Bobby your uncle or granddad?"

Kate grinned. "He would be hurt if I called him that. He is uncle Bobby to me but I usually just call him Bobby. He helped John out when he first got into this mess and we have all kind of grown up here when our parents couldn't take care of us."

"He seems nice."

"He is. He is grumpy sometimes but he is the best." Kate said. "So, did your brothers actually use you for stunts?"

Taylor blushed. "Yes, although not normal stunts. The road rash was from being pushed out of a moving vehicle so I would learn how to roll if I ever got captured."

Kate frowned. "Sam and Dean knock me on my back when fight training but they wouldn't hurt me like that."

"How did you hurt your leg?"

Kate paused. "You don't want to know."

Taylor smirked. "You know enough about me. Tell me."

Kate teared up. "We were attacked by something and it scratched my leg from hip to knee. The scar on my ankle is from it too."

Taylor gave her a sympathetic look. "What was it?"

Kate shook her head. "It doesn't matter what it was. I don't want to think about it because it still gives me nightmares."

Taylor reached over and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."

Kate leaned her head on him. "It's okay."

Sam stepped outside to check on them and cleared his throat loudly. He had no issue with them hugging but also found enjoyment in tormenting Kate.

Taylor snapped back with wide eyes.

Sam put a hand up. "Not out here to bust you. Just checking to see how you two are doing."

Kate rolled her eyes. "What are they saying?"

Sam scrunched his nose. "I'm not supposed to say."

Kate groaned. "Hey, at least all the attention is on this and you don't have to say anything about Stanford yet."

Taylor tilted his head. "Stanford?"

Sam smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, I got a full ride and my dad doesn't know yet."

"Why not?" Taylor asked.

"Uh, he wants me to stay where he can keep an eye on me and take over the family business. I don't think he is going to be happy about me going to California. " Sam said.

Taylor understood. "I got drafted onto a travel ball team that would have been really good for my future in baseball but my dad lost it because it would bring too much attention to me."

Sam nodded. "Have to fly under the radar." Sam looked at his phone and stepped to the side. He spoke briefly and hung up. "Kate, you can go inside."

Kate made sure Taylor was good and ran inside. She was eager to know what John had found out.

John pulled a chair out for her and told her to sit.

"What is it?" Kate asked.

John sighed. "Will you just sit down?"

Kate crossed her arms and sat.

Dean looked at her and gave her look that said calm down.

Kate relaxed her arms and looked at John.

"Did you see the smudge or whatever you want to call it?" John asked.

Kate nodded slowly. "I think so."

"When Craig was deployed, his platoon was taken captive. They were held for a few days. Something happened while he was there. One of the men turned cannibal and ripped into some of the others. He was much stronger than he should have been and Craig couldn't describe it in detail because it still really bothers him. When he was released from the camp, he was put on a psych hold because no one believed the story. I think that what ever happened wasn't from natural causes. He worked as a bounty hunter for a few years but seems to have days where what ever he saw over there comes back."

Kate sat forward. "I can read him and know exactly what it was."

John shook his head. "No. I-"

Kate interrupted. "Then we could help him better."

John looked at her. "Interrupt me again and you will be marching yourself right back outside."

Kate shrunk in her chair.

"Pastor Jim is going to be speaking with Craig. He will be able to access what happened while also figuring out how much help that Craig needs. I honestly do not think he wanted to hurt Taylor. I think that Taylor got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't condone what he did but I do think that, with some help, he can get to the point that he isn't a danger to Taylor." John added.

Kate waited until she was told she could speak. "I have questions and worries but thanks for helping him."

Dean put his arm around her. "You would have went rogue and tried to help him yourself if we didn't."

Kate shook her head. "No. Nope. I'm done going rogue."

Dean squeezed her. "Good. Taylor seems like a good kid and we can't just stand by while a kid is in danger. You did good letting Sam know something was wrong."

Kate relaxed and let her breath out. "Now what?"

"Now Taylor is going to spend the night with his friend and Pastor Jim is going to talk to Craig. Bobby and I will look into what happened over there and you will be patient." John answered.

Kate bit her cheek. "Yes sir. Can I tell Taylor?"

John nodded. "You can tell him that I spoke to his dad and am going to get him some help. Do not tell him what happened."

Kate stood up. "Yes sir. I wont." She knew she could have read him and gotten all the information she needed but she was serious about not going rogue. That never ended well. She wanted Taylor to be safe and she realized that she couldn't do that by herself.

Taylor thanked them for helping him and grabbed his stuff to go to Ellie's house. He was nervous but for the first time in a long time, he didn't feel alone.
