Author's note: I know I have an uptick in typos. I get rushes of dialog and story line and do not always see the mistakes until later. If anyone would like to be an official/or unofficial beta, I'm open to a second set of eyes. For now I will go back and correct things as I find them.

Dean quietly pulled his duffle from under his bed and grabbed a few extra sets of clothes. He went downstairs and grabbed the gear that he needed. He made a cup of coffee and waited for Sam and Kate to wake up.

Bobby handed him a paper with the address to a rendezvous point.

Dean heard movement up stairs and ran up. "Hey, I have to get going but didn't want to go until you two woke up."

Kate sighed. "I want to go with you."

Dean ruffled her hair. "You have stuff to do here."

Kate hugged him. "Come back in one piece."

He rubbed her back before squeezing her. "If I don't you can patch me up."

Kate crinkled her nose. "Just try to come back in the least amount of pieces possible."

Dean found Sam and let him know he was about to head out.

Sam gave him the go ahead and got his stuff together for school. The contrast between Dean and John made Sam thankful that Dean had been around his entire life.

Kate went downstairs in search of food and grabbed another stack of photos to sift through. Some of the people she recognized but others she didn't. She kind of assumed that she and the boys were the only kids that wound up at Bobby's. "Bobby, who is this girl?" She asked and held up a photograph of a blonde headed girl sitting on a bar between Bobby and a dark haired woman.

Bobby took the photo and chuckled. "That is Jo and Ellen." He looked at the date on the back. "Jo was about your age in that photo."

Kate took it back. "How old is she now?"

He rubbed his temple. "She is probably about 16 now. She lost her dad the year before that photo was taken."

Kate frowned. She wondered if there were any hunters' kids who hadn't lost at least one parent. "Are you the oldest hunter or is there other people that are your age?"

Bobby turned around and looked at her. "I ain't old."

Kate giggled. "In hunter's years you are."

Bobby sighed. "Rufus is older than me but you are right. It is a feat to get to my age."

Kate looked at the picture of Jo and Ellen. She hadn't met many kids while traveling with her dad and was odd seeing someone else that was like her.

Bobby looked at the time and hurried Kate out the door after Sam. He looked at the photo and decided to check on Ellen.

Dean drove out of town and blared the music. He let his foot rest heavy on the accelerator and leaned back in the seat. He had always envisioned taking Sam with him on the road once he graduated but those plans changed. He loved Bobby like a second father figure but he quickly grew restless. He had a growing reputation as an accomplished hunter and he prided himself in how many creatures he had gotten rid of.

Kate tried to pay attention during class but she couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. The feeling wasn't strong enough to pin point and she knew she could probably figure it out if she used her abilities but she had promised not to. As the day wore on her nerves become more frazzled. She needed to know where the feeling was coming from.

Taylor saw Kate chewing on her fingers and asked what was wrong.

Kate told him about the feeling and wanting to pinpoint it.

Taylor listened although he didn't know what it was like to have those abilities. "Didn't they say you couldn't do that?"

Kate growled in frustration.

Taylor sat down beside her. "You can wait until after school and get Sam to help you so you can find out what is wrong without breaking that rule."

Kate blinked at him. "I can do a quick scan and no one would know."

He furrowed his brows. "You would know and I would know. They'd find out eventually. What if it is some kind of trap?"

Kate sighed and kicked her feet over the bars. "Did Dean assign you to keep me from doing stuff?"

Taylor smiled. "No. My dad is real big on following orders too and it is usually best to follow them."

Kate rolled her eyes. "You are no fun."

Taylor shrugged. "Nothing is fun if you get grounded forever."

Kate sighed but gave in. "Fine. I'll wait for Sam."

Taylor jumped from the monkey bars and held his hands out to slow her fall when she jumped.

Sam could see by Kate's body language that she was struggling. "What is up?"

Kate plopped herself down in the seat and threw her backpack behind her. "I still feel off and I need to try a few things to figure out what is going on."

Sam sighed. "I don't know if that is a good idea."

Kate crossed her arms. "I haven't used my abilities in a while. So, either help me or I'm going to do it without you."

Sam slowed the car. "Kate."

She looked out the window. "I can't lie or do it behind your back so there."

"I didn't say I wouldn't help you. Drop the attitude." Sam said.

Kate glared at him. "Okay Dean."

Sam stopped the car. "I don't know why you are coming at me. I didn't do anything to you and I don't like being snapped at."

Kate softened. "I'm sorry. This feeling is like having a rock in your shoe. It is annoying and I'm anxious."

Sam started driving again. "So we talk about it and get to the bottom of it without biting each other's heads off."

Kate nodded her head. "I'm sorry."

He nudged her. "It is okay. I know you are frustrated."

Kate got out and trudged up the steps. She opened the front door and took her bag up to her room. She hated having to wait around for someone to say it was okay to use her abilities. Sam said he would help her so she tried to push her frustration down.

Sam walked in and found Bobby. "Hey, Kate still feels off and I told her I would help her figure out what was going on. She is getting antsy and I think it would be good for her to do some searching."

Bobby shrugged and said it was okay.

Sam ran up the stairs and found Kate. "Are you ready?"

Kate sat on her bed. "Did you ask Bobby?"

Sam smiled. "I did and he said it is okay."

Kate laid back on her bed. "Great so I have permission to use my brain."

Sam sighed and sat beside her. "What is up with you?"

Kate sat up. "Nothing."

Sam smirked. "You have been prickly all day. I'm offering you help."

Kate groaned. "I shouldn't need help. I shouldn't have to ask permission to freaking think."

"If you want me to help I need you to stop snapping at me." Sam said gently.

Kate pulled her knees to her chest. "I'll try."

Sam ruffled her hair. "That's all I'm asking. Now, what do you need me to do."

Kate shrugged. "Sometimes I can kind of shut myself away from the world and only the outside things show up. Like covering your eyes to hear better."

Sam nodded. "Do you need it to be dark in here?"

Kate looked around. "Yeah that may help."

Sam grabbed the blankets and put them over the windows. "Okay now what?"

"Uh, you can sit there and pull me out if something happens." Kate said and pointed back to the bed.

Sam shook his head. "No, I'm coming with you."

Kate hit the bed. "No! I can do this myself."

Sam crouched down in front of her. "I said I would help. Two sets of eyes are better than one. You can accept my help of I can ask Bobby to come up here and you can explain to him why you are so adamant that you do this alone."

Kate frowned. "Fine."

Sam sighed. He wished that she would calm down. "Let's get to root of this feeling."

Kate crossed her legs and got comfortable on her bed. She thought about how she wanted to approach the problem and took Sam's hand. "Just follow along."

Sam nodded and closed his own eyes.

Kate sorted through memories of the previous days and filtered out the things that didn't seem important. She went back to the diner and tried to focus on the things she hadn't when they were there.

Sam looked at the table and watched their conversation from the day before. He had never gotten to see that interaction from an outside person's point of view. They all looked happy. "Did the feeling start here?"

Kate shrugged. "I think so. I may have felt it before but it was noticeable here." She turned around slowly and tried to focus on what could possibly be off. She got frustrated when nothing jumped out.

Sam reminded her to stay calm and asked her questions that could help her narrow down the cause.

Kate froze in place and quickly left the diner for the gym. She looked around frantically until she found what she needed and kicked both herself and Sam from the vision.

Sam turned on the light. "What was it?"

Kate chewed on her fingers and bounced her legs.

Sam sighed wrapped his arms around her. "What ever it is, I'm here. We can figure it out."

Kate tried to piece together the words she couldn't find. "I can kind of see if someone has been touched by something supernatural. It is kind of like looking at magic ink with a black light."

Sam nodded. "I'm following."

"It isn't always strong. Sometimes it is so faint that I can't tell for sure. That is why I felt off. I think." Kate said into his chest.

Sam rubbed her back. He could see where this was going. "So someone was at the diner and the gym or two different people?"

Kate sat back. "Two different people."

Sam furrowed his brows. He wondered if this had anything to do with his family. "Who?"

Kate took off down the stairs.

Sam grabbed her around the waist and sat down on the bottom stair.

Kate tried to wiggle free.

Sam called for Bobby and tightened his arms around her.

Bobby stepped into the hallway. "What is going on?"

Sam told him about what Kate had told him upstairs.

"Who did you see?" Bobby asked.

Kate drove her elbow in to Sam's shin and tried to push away from him. "Let me go."

Sam took a deep breath from the sting in his shin. "Not until you calm down."

Kate growled and gave up fighting. "Lacy and Evan."

Sam kept his arm around her. "Are they connected?"

Kate renewed her efforts to get free. He head caught Sam in the mouth and she managed to slip free.

Sam put his hand to his mouth and made sure it wasn't bleeding.

Bobby caught Kate's arm and spun her around to face Sam. "Katelyn Amelia, calm down before I calm you down."

Kate heard the bite in his tone and looked at Sam who was holding his mouth. She froze and stopped fighting. "I'm sorry."

Sam looked at her but didn't say anything.

Kate hung her head. "I'm really sorry."

Bobby steered her toward the kitchen. "Sam if you want to borrow a spoon you go for it."

Kate gasped. "Sam wouldn't!"

Sam shook his head. "No I wouldn't but I wouldn't stop Bobby."

Kate got wide eyed. "No! Look. I'm sorry. I really like Lacy and she means a lot to Dean. I'm scared and I want to help."

Bobby pulled out a chair and let go of her arm. "Sit."

Kate sat and bounced her legs.

Sam sat down across from her.

Bobby took the other chair. "Tell us what you found out and we can all three work together to get to the bottom of this."

Kate frowned. "The feeling I got was because part of my brain realized that something had gotten to both Lacy and Evan. I didn't understand it at the time but I am sure now. I can go to Lacy and do a read and figure out what it was."

Sam put his elbows on the table. "That is an option but you need to be careful. Since Lacy and Evan may not have been at the same place at the same time, it is likely that what ever got to them put together that both of them had ties to us."

Kate sat back. "Oh."

Bobby nodded. "So if you go running off trying to solve things by yourself you could walk right into a trap."

Kate shifted. "I can't just sit here."

Bobby sighed. "We aren't asking you to. We are asking you to slow down and think."

Kate blushed. "Okay."

Sam tapped his fingers on the table. "We should probably call Dean."

Kate reached for her phone.

Sam put his hand on hers. "I'll call him first."

Kate sat back and crossed her arms. "I'm the one who connected the dots."

Sam smirked. "You are also the one that will wind up saying something smart and getting on his nerves."

Kate furrowed her brows. "Fine."

Sam dialed the number and waited for Dean to pick up. "Hey, we have something to look into. Kate identified why she felt off. Something may have gotten to Lacy. No, she is okay as far as we know. What ever it was must not have harmed her because she was working yesterday. Uh, are you sure? She is a little testy right now." Sam sighed and phone to Kate.

Kate reached over the table and grabbed the phone. "Dean, listen. What? Well no shit. Ow!" Kate spat and rubbed the spot where Bobby's hand had landed. "Ugh, yes I'm listening." Kate was silent while Dean spoke and rested her elbow on the table. She waited for him to stop talking and took a deep breath. "Yeah I got it." She handed the phone to Bobby and sat back.

Bobby eyed Kate as Dean spoke. He shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Okay, we will go talk to her." He said and hung up the phone. He handed Sam's phone back and looked at Kate. "Thin ice."

Kate sighed. She couldn't control her frustration. "Are we going to talk to her?"

Bobby rubbed his beard. "We are but you are going to have to go with the plan."

Sam nudged her. "We are going to follow the plan as well. We are on the same side."

Kate nodded her head. "Okay."

Sam followed her upstairs to grab a few things. He sat down and caught her hand, pulling her to stand in front of him. "Please talk to me. I don't want to fight with you. If you want to complain about the rules I will listen. I know you are scared and angry. Is this because I am leaving?"

Kate slumped. "No. I will miss you but I'm happy for you. You wont be gone forever. I have this ability that I can't use. I know things that you guys don't and I hate sitting back and not being allowed to help."

Sam patted the bed. "I have had those times too. Dad and Dean would rush into a building to take care of a ghost and I'd be left in the car. It is very frustrating. Focus on the gun rules. Just because you know how to use one doesn't mean you should run into a fight without checking that it works, making sure it will work against what ever you are aiming at and there are no civilians around."

Kate smiled sheepishly. "I'm sorry I elbowed you."

Sam chuckled. "and busted my lip."

Kate frowned. "You have a lot of patience."

Sam smiled. "I guess I do." He patted her leg. "Go on and get ready so we can go talk to Lacy."

Kate got up "I don't really have anything to get ready with."

Sam tilted his head. "It is probably a good idea to wear your necklace."

Kate smiled and pulled the chain out from the neck of her shirt. "I never take it off." She held the pendant with Brian's ashes in her fingers. Beside it was the charm that she had worn on her ankle for so long.

Sam smiled and grabbed his gun and put it in his waistband. He ruffled her hair and went back down to Bobby.

Bobby looked at them. "You two ready?"

Sam nodded.

"Okay. Lacy is working tonight so we are going to pop in and talk to her. You may read her after I give you the go ahead." He said.

"Yes Bobby." Kate said.

He opened the front door and ushered them both outside. He locked the door and got in his truck. He was pleased that Kate was more subdued.

Kate fidgeted the entire way to the diner. She wanted to catch what ever had dared to get close to Lacy. She wasn't sure why something would use Evan to get to them but she did see him twice a week. He was the front desk person at the gym.

Once the car was stopped Bobby repeated the plan.

Kate said that she understood and would not attempt to read anyone until Bobby told her to. The last thing she wanted was to be sent to the car.

Lacy greeted them and was surprised to see them back for a second night.

Bobby told her casually that Kate was down and they stopped by for milkshakes. This was the cover they had come up with, knowing that Lacy would try to comfort Kate.

"What would you like?" Lacy asked.

Kate shrugged. "Can I get a strawberry milkshake?"

Lacy smiled. "Extra cherries?"

Kate nodded and smiled. "Yes, than you."

Lacy put in their order and walked back to the counter. "What has you so down?"

Kate eyed Bobby and gave Lacy a look.

"Is it a boy?" Lacy asked.

Kate frowned and nodded pitifully.

Bobby gave her a subtle wink.

She gave Lacy another look.

Lacy leaned over and told her she could tell her all about it.

Kate looked at Bobby and Sam like she was embarrassed.

Lacy picked up the milkshakes and passed them out. She motioned for Kate to sit on the bar stool at the end of the counter and took Kate's hands in hers. "I know all about boy problems so you can talk to me."

Kate fed her a sob story about a boy she liked and worked up a few tears to go with it.

Lacy hugged her and offered to take her on a girls' day.

Kate took the hug as an opportunity to search Lacy's memory. Once she had what she needed she broke the hug and thanked Lacy. She went back over and finished her shake with Bobby and Sam. She was processing information but felt better about having gotten the chance to find answers.

Bobby left a large tip for Lacy and they all left the diner. He turned the truck on. "What did you find out?"

"She hasn't been hurt by anything. I saw a few things that could possibly be something but nothing jumped out. If she notices anything odd or loses time she will call Dean." Kate said.

Sam looked at her. "Did you compel her?"

Kate froze. "I gave her the idea without making her aware of it."

Bobby looked in the mirror. "You did good. That was a good call."

Kate relaxed. "I'll draw some sketches so you can look into the things I saw."

Bobby nodded.

They drove quietly for a few minutes before Sam quickly turned around. He grinned at Kate.

Kate sat forward. "What is it?"

"You didn't see anything about Dean right?" Sam asked.

Kate made a face. "Ew. No."

Sam's eyes twinkled. "Imagine how bad he would freak out if he thought you had."

Kate gasped and giggled.

Bobby shook his head and chuckled.

Kate bounced in the seat. "It has to be after we know Lacy is okay."

Sam nodded. "Oh yeah. When he gets back. Oh he is going to lose it."

Bobby snorted. "You two figure it out and I'll back you up."

Sam turned his head. "You want in on it?"

Bobby smiled. "You want it to be believable don't you? He is expecting you two to pull stuff."

Kate grinned and sat back in her seat. "I didn't know you liked pranks."

"Let's just say not all of Dean's ideas were his."

Kate gasped. "What?"

Bobby chuckled.

"Which ones?" Sam demanded.

Bobby shook his head. "I'm not telling you."

Kate was elated with the idea of Bobby being mischievous.

They made it back to Bobby's house and went inside.

Kate ran to grab her sketch book. She focused on drawing the faces of the two people she thought could be suspicious. She missed using her abilities and exploring how much she could do. She had questions that she wanted answers to. She finished the drawings and gave them to Bobby.

Bobby was always impressed with how well she could draw. "I'll see if I can find out who these people are. Thank you."

Kate sat down in the chair in front of his desk. She was antsy again. She rested her head on the back of the chair and got lost in her thoughts. Some time later she felt herself being lifted. She moved her arm and mumbled. "I can walk."

Sam scooped her up and ignored the half hearted protest. He thought that she was lighter than she had been. He carried her up the stairs and laid her on her bed. "Goodnight."

Kate mumbled and rolled over.

Sam pulled her blanket up and went back to Bobby's. "Are you finding any leads?"

Bobby grumbled. "It isn't a lot to go on without names. It is a good thing that Lacy hasn't been hurt in any way but that leaves the question of why any of this is happening."

Sam rubbed his face. "Why is something always after us?"

Bobby chuckled. "Have you met John Winchester?"

Sam snorted. "You are right."

"Can you keep an eye on her tonight? She is trying really hard to follow her rules but this is like putting steak in front of a dog." Bobby said.

Sam already had that thought. "I'll head up to bed."

Bobby waved him off and called Dean to update him.

Dean answered. "Hey, Bobby. How is Lacy?"

"She seems to be doing fine. Kate read her and said that she hadn't been hurt in anyway but something may have gotten close enough to leave some kind of psychic mark that Kate can see." Bobby answered.

Dean sighed. He really liked Lacy but this was the main reason he didn't stay with one person for long. He didn't like making them targets. "Does she know what got near her?"

"No. She gave me some drawings to investigate but I can't do much with them at this point."

"How is Kate?" Dean asked, concerned.

"She seems okay too. She has had an attitude and a half today but she is frustrated." Bobby said lightly.

Dean chuckled. "I noticed when I talked to her early. Hopefully she doesn't follow her old pattern of; find something, get frustrated over it and then run off and do something silly."

Bobby groaned inwardly. "That last bit is what I am afraid of."

"I'll call her and talk to her tomorrow. If I can get this job done tonight I can head back in the morning." Dean added.

Bobby said goodnight to him and called it a night.

Dean put his phone away and walked back through the dense forest. He found tracks and followed them down the face of a cliff. He gave the other hunter a nod to let him know it was safe to come down as well.

Able, the other hunter, stood beside Dean and aimed his gun into a cave. "This is where those things live."

Dean aimed his flashlight at the opening. "I don't think a human would fit in there."

Able smirked. "Not in one piece."

Dean cringed. "So we smoke them out?"

Able nodded and lit a wrapped bundle of sticks and herbs. "Shoot anything that comes out."

Dean aimed and fired at the first creature to appear. It was small and humanlike but skin and bones with jagged teeth.

Three more came out and were quickly dispatched.

"Is there any more?" Dean asked, hesitantly.

Able fired into the small cave and waited for rustling. Nothing happened. He stood up and turned around. "It looks like that's al-"

Dean fired and hit the small creature that had dug its teeth into Able's leg. He helped Able to the ground and kicked the creature's body away. "Did it get you?"

Able pulled up his pants leg and laughed. "He got my boot."

Dean sighed in relief. "What was that you were saying about it being all of them?"

Able leaned back. "Let's cover up the hole just incase."

Dean helped him gather large rocks to cover the opening with. He felt his phone buzz and answered it. "Lacy?" He covered his free ear and tried to hear what she was saying through the broken connection. "Lacy?"

"Something...wrong.. is.. house." Came the garbled reply from Lacy's end.

Dean felt terror running through his veins. "Able, call Bobby."

Able threw the last rock on the hole and dialed Bobby's phone.

Bobby groggily answered. "Singer."

Dean took the phone from his friend. "Bobby, something is wrong with Lacy."

Bobby shot out of bed and went to get Sam. "Is she home?"

Dean was still on the phone with her although he couldn't hear anything. "I think so. Her phone is breaking up too much and I don't know what is wrong."

Bobby shook Sam and told him to grab his gear.

Kate jumped up and got her stuff. "I'm coming."

Bobby looked at her. "You need to stay here."

Kate glared at him. "Lacy is in danger isn't she?"

Bobby growled but motioned for her to get to the truck. "We are on our way over Dean."

Dean rubbed his head and swore under his breath. "Please keep me updated. We are on our way back up to the car now."

Bobby hung up the phone and drove directly to Lacy's house. The street was quiet. He parked a few houses down from hers and told Kate to stay put.

Kate waited for Bobby and Sam to disappear into the darkness before closing her eyes and searching for Lacy. The harder she looked, the more her head hurt. She reasoned that what ever was around had some kind of damper for her abilities. She wracked her brain for what type of creature could do that. Of all the things that had a vendetta against her family, demons seemed the most likely for the current situation. She looked around the truck for something to write with but couldn't find anything. She kicked the seat in frustration.

Bobby found the door to Lacy's house opened slightly. He quietly entered and cleared the hallway.

Sam walked around him and cleared another room.

They both looked toward Lacy's bed room.

Bobby made his way down the hallway and stopped when he heard movement. He could hear a woman whimpering as well. He took another step toward the room but his feet suddenly stopped moving.

Sam became wide eyed when his own feet couldn't move. They were trapped.

Two men walked from Lacy's room and their eyes turned black when they saw the pair. "Well what do we have here?" One said.

The other smiled. "We were hoping Dean would show up but this just sweetens the deal. Where's that little girl that you always have hanging around?"

Bobby swore. He prayed that she had stayed in the truck.

One of the demons walked to the door and looked around. "She has to be nearby. I can smell her."

Sam swallowed hard.

The other demon grabbed Sam around the neck and led him out onto the porch. "Let's see if she shows up if she hears you."

Sam felt blinding pain in his head but bit back the scream.

Kate could see what was happening from where she was hidden and forced herself to stay. This was a trap. She closed her eyes and ran through everything she knew about demons. She opened her eyes and grabbed her knife. She took a deep breath and dragged the knife across her hand, just enough for what she needed. She steadied herself and quickly drew a sigil on the window. She flinched when she heard Sam yelp. She took one last breath and laid her hand on the sigil.

Bobby saw a bright light and heard screaming. He found that his feet worked again and he ran to Sam.

Sam was sitting on the ground holding his head.

"Where did they go?" Bobby asked, looking around.

Sam rubbed his eyes. "They burned."

"Kate." Bobby said and ran toward the truck.

Kate saw him coming and rolled the window. When he got close enough she splashed him with holy water.

Bobby jerked his head back but chuckled. "Good thinking. What happened? Wait, what is that?" He shined his light on the window.

Kate hugged him. "It is a sigil."

"That burns demons?" Bobby said, walking around to get a close look.

Kate shrugged. "I wasn't sure if it would work."

Sam came to the truck with Lacy, who was frazzled. He helped her into the back seat and closed the door. "I thought it might be best to get her out of here for the night."

Bobby rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah, I'll call Dean."

Kate gently touched Lacy's arm. "You had a really weird dream and are exhausted."

Lacy rubbed her eyes and laid her head against the window.

Kate sat back as Bobby drove. Her whole body felt like it was vibrating. When she had hit the sigil she had seen the bright light but it didn't disappear. It spiraled and hit her like a bullet. She held her chest and could feel the warmth. She wrapped her arms around herself to stop the shaking. She didn't know what she had done but the feeling she had was like nothing she had ever felt before. It was pure and raw. It was power and she liked it.
