Taylor called Craig with the new information about Ada. He asked his mom to talk to his grandmother as soon as possible.

Misty knew about Taylor and Kate but hadn't given it much thought. She called her mother's number and hoped that she was still awake. "Hey, mom."

Taylor skidded back into the room. "Can I talk to her?"

Misty smiled and handed him the phone.

"Hey, nana. I was looking through some of our old family stuff and just wanted to know some stuff about our family that lived in Scotland." Taylor said.

Marie was happy to tell old stories. "What would you like to know?"

Taylor tried to steer her toward the era in time that Ada would have fled with the babies.

Marie told him multiple stories about the clan they belonged to and the war. "Our bloodline would have ended in the 1700s if not for a young woman that smuggled a newborn out of the warzone."

Taylor closed his eyes. "Really? What happened?"

Marie looked around for the old book she had with detailed accounts of their family history. "The story has been passed down from my mother and her mother and so on. When the British came to round up anyone who was involved in the fight against them, they captured my... I'm not sure how many greats grandfather. His wife had helped the troops and was afraid that she would also be captured. They had a son who would eventually become the next leader so she asked her friend to take him and run. She had a daughter of similar age so she took both babies and moved away from the war. She raised the two children as twins and eventually married a very kind man who claimed both children as his own. Our family history is fuzzy due to documents not reflecting who the male child was."

Taylor was immersed in the story but couldn't ask the questions he wanted to ask. "Do you have names? I'd love to do some research and fix our family tree."

Marie found the book she was looking for. "I do have a family book that I could lend you. I think it is wonderful that you are interested in this. Your mother never was."

Misty gave Taylor a forced smile.

Taylor got off the phone with her and paced back and forth. Was it possible that their families were intertwined so long ago? Why had they not stayed together and why had they found each other now? Did any of this cause their abilities?

Taylor called Craig back first to let him and John know what Marie had told him. "Dad, this is big. This could answer so many questions."

Craig was less thrilled than Taylor was. "It could raise a lot more."

Taylor frowned. He didn't know why his dad had to be a killjoy. "I'll look at the family book when I get ahold of it."

Craig told him that was fine and he'd be home soon.

John could hear the irritation in Craig's voice. "What do you think of this development?"

Craig grumbled. "I think Taylor needs to stay clear of this mess."

John heard the bite in those words. "What mess is that?"

Craig looked him in the eye. "None of this came up until he got around Kate. She is supernatural herself and I don't know what that means for him."

John swallowed his anger. "She does have some interesting abilities but she isn't like the things we hunt. If that story is true, I doubt anything either of us did would have prevented Taylor from becoming involved. Kate had nothing to do with your unit being attacked."

Craig rubbed his tense neck. "I know it isn't her fault."

John smirked. "You are scared."

Craig sighed. "I can think clearly for the first time in a long time. Things make sense. Thinking that my son is part of some 200 and some year old conspiracy theory doesn't make me feel as sane."

John chuckled. "Try finding out two of your kids have psychic abilities and are connected to a demon."

Craig relaxed his shoulders. "I guess you would know."

"If he has some ancient inheritance sitting out there, it would be nice to know. You could be staying in hotels instead of motels." John joked.

That made Craig crack a smile. "That could go for Kate as well."

John shook his head. Of course he was worried but worry did nothing but cause extra stress.

Taylor called Kate's phone so he could relay the new information to them as well.

Kate was about to fall asleep when her phone buzzed.

"Hey, Katie. I have some news. Can you put your phone on speaker?" Taylor said.

Kate pushed the button. "Okay, Sam, Dean and I are in the car."

Taylor took a deep breath and told them the story.

Kate was shocked. This could be the answer.

Dean watched Kate's eyes as she processed the information. He hoped that she didn't let her curiosity get her into trouble again.

Sam and Kate called Bobby and Missouri to loop them in.

Missouri found the story to be interesting and planned to speak to Ada again. She seemed to be a very important piece of the puzzle.

Kate let her mind wander over theories and reasons to make sense of how they had gotten from the 1700s to the 2000s. Was she really connected to the yellow eyed demon or was that a misunderstanding? She had to be though. How could she be caught up in two major plots? She wished that she could talk to her mom and ask questions. Did her mom know about the family's gifts? Did her mom have gifts? Was her dad's family involved as well?

"How are you doing back there?" Dean asked.

Kate startled. "I'm okay."

Dean gave Sam a look.

Sam reached back and touched her leg. "I wouldn't be okay if I got that big of news."

Kate sighed. "I'm confused. I want answers. I feel like nothing in my life is real and I'm just a pawn in some game."

"I feel like that too." Sam said.

"Me three." Dean said lightly.

Kate laid down on the back seat. "I'm scared."

That is what Dean was looking for. "You've got us."

They had been with her through so many things and he had a point. "I want to figure this out."

"We will. Just remember that we need to work together." Dean said.

Kate put her feet against the window. "Do I get unlimited daily questions?"

Dean smirked. "I make no promises. Hey, feet off the window."

Kate grumbled and pulled her feet down. "You love this car more than you love me."

Dean laughed. "I love you equally."

Kate sat up and wiped the smudges from the window. She loved the car too but there was an unspoken requirement that she must complain about it. "What if I was the baby that Ada had and I got frozen in time and I'm actually older than you?"

Dean snorted. "You aren't older than me."

Kate giggled. "You don't know that. What if I am an ancient forest witch and I'm supposed to take over the world?"

Sam grinned at her. "That one could be true."

"As long as you take over the world for good." Dean said with a smile.

They came up with wild theories that made them all laugh.

Dean was glad to see her relaxing but part of him worried about what things would mean. She was a good kid but struggled with the amount of power she already had. How was he supposed to keep her safe if he couldn't keep her safe from herself?

Sam woke up early because his excitement wouldn't let him rest. Nothing would ruin this day. He checked his cap and gown one more time to make sure that there were no wrinkles, smudges or stray threads. He went down stairs to start a pot of coffee but he could already smell it. He was not surprised to see John sitting at the table.

John nodded his head to acknowledge Sam but didn't say anything.

Sam could feel John's eyes on him and felt awkward. "Is something wrong?"

John chuckled. "No. I just wish your mother was here for this."

Sam sat down and held his cup to his face to let the steam wake him up. "Me too."

John tapped his fingers on the table. "She would be so proud of you. She was serious about school and would like that you are going to Stanford."

Sam could read between the lines and knew John was struggling to put his thoughts into words. "Some days I'd give anything just to hear her voice at least once."

John nodded. "I have kicked myself a thousand times over for not saving at least one video tape."

"Thanks for saying you'd go to the ceremony." Sam said.

John frowned. "You shouldn't' have had to think I wasn't."

Sam didn't disagree. "Next graduation I'll be in my 20s."

John still wasn't thrilled with Sam going off to college.

Sam could see John swallow the lump in his throat and dropped the conversation. Sam looked toward the stairs when he heard a creek. He tilted his chair back and looked down the hallway.

Kate grinned and ran to hug him.

Sam sat his cup down and held his arm out.

"I'm so excited for you!" Kate said and patted his back.

"Why are you awake?" Sam asked.

Kate squeezed him. "Because I'm excited. I'm going back to bed but I woke up and you weren't there and I thought I'd see why." She gave John a quick hug too and ran back up the stairs.

"That girl hugs more than anyone I have ever met." John said with a smile.

Sam smiled too. "You get used to it."

John was a little surprised she wanted anything to do with him. He rubbed the back of his head and tried to calm his nerves. "I uh.. got you something." He said and walked out of the room.

Sam furrowed his brows as he waited.

John awkwardly handed him a flat package wrapped in simple paper.

Sam turned it over in his hands. "What is it?"

John gave him a small smile. "You have to open it."

Sam tore the corner of the paper and pulled it away. He found a leather journal like the one John had but it was not as thick and it was bigger. It smelt of new leather and had his initials stamped on the bottom corner. Sam didn't know what to say.

John got antsy. "I hope you like it. Missouri said you would. I don't really know much about those kind of things."

Sam opened it and smiled. "It is a portfolio."

John nodded. "That is what she called it. I figured you wouldn't need a journal like mine but that will last a long time."

Sam gave John a grin. "I really like it. Thank you."

John felt some of the awkwardness melt away.

"I can use it during school and then after I graduate. This is really nice. This had to be expensive." Sam said.

John watched the delight flicker across Sam's face and felt a little better about Stanford.

Sam looked up at John. "What is it?"

John grimaced. "I had something else but I don't want to ruin the moment."

Sam chuckled. "What is it?"

John sighed and drummed his fingers. "I wasn't happy about this whole college thing because Dean and I can't keep an eye on you if you are all the way out there. Hear me out." John said and held up his hand. "I talked to Missouri and you know how she is. She made me see things from a different view. I will support this decision of yours but I ask one thing of you in return."

Sam sat forward. "What?"

John shifted in his seat. "Ward your dorm."

Sam took a breath. He wanted to leave hunting behind. He saw how much John was struggling and knew he was swallowing his pride in order to give him that small bit of grace. "I can do that."

John relaxed. "I know you know what to use but Missouri insisted that I pack a box of stuff."

Sam laughed. "You know most parents send a box of baked goods and family photos with their kid to college."

John grinned. "I'm not most parents."

Sam wondered how much had been Missouri's idea and how much John was hiding behind her to keep from feeling embarrassed. "Thanks, dad."

John relished every time Sam said that without a certain tone to his voice. "Just keep yourself safe."

Sam shrugged. "I don't know. Those college parties do get pretty wild."

John snorted. "Don't say that or you'll have your brother showing up wither you want him there or not."

Sam felt a twinge of guilt that Dean hadn't gotten to experience those. "You'll have to ask Kate about the letter she wrote herself."

John raised a brow. "What is that about?"

Sam told him about the tradition the school had about writing your future self a letter.

"Huh, Kate freakin' Winchester is it?" John said with a chuckle.

Sam smiled. "She may want to make that her legal name one day."

"With all this Scottish clan business she may be Lady Kate." John said absentmindedly.

Dean walked in. "That wouldn't go to her head at all." He slapped Sam on the back. "Graduation day Sammy. Am I supposed to say break a leg?"

Sam rolled the sting from his back. "Not until the ceremony, Jerk."

"Bitch." Dean said and poured himself some coffee.

Later that afternoon, Dean, Kate, Bobby, Lacy and John sat in a row and watched as students filed through the stage and received their diploma.

Kate felt like she was going to jump out of her skin. Of course their last name had to be one of the last ones called. She grinned and gave Sam a big thumbs up when his name was called and his college was announced. She looked to her side and saw a single tear on John's face. She gave him a grin too.

John hastily wiped it away and sighed. He was so damn proud of Sam.

Sam had a death grip on his diploma as if he thought it would slip away if he didn't. This was the biggest moment of his life and his dad was there to see it. His family was there to see it. He scooped up his cap from where it hit the ground after they threw them in the air. He walked over and put it on Kate's head.

Kate grinned and jumped to hug him around the neck.

Sam spun her around.

Dean gave him a nudge. "Nice dress."

Lacy smacked his arm. "He means congratulations, Sam."

Sam gave each of them a hug.

Bobby clapped him on the back and congratulated him as well.

John stayed a few feet back so he wasn't swept up in the emotional exchange.

Sam saw him and offered his hand for a handshake.

John shook his hand and pulled him in for a brief hug. "Well, you did it son."

Dean acted like he didn't see the look on John's face.

Kate pulled Sam's hand. "We have celebrating to do!"

Sam put his arms over her shoulders like she was going to give him a piggy back ride.

Kate stumbled. "You are too heavy."

Sam let go and walked beside her. "I guess you need to work out more."

Kate grinned. "You are a giant."

Sam stood up tall. "Nah."

Bobby chuckled. "Dean, he is your height now."

Dean scoffed.

John chuckled. They really were the same height. "If he hits another growth spurt he is going to be taller than you."

Dean elbowed Sam. "I swear to god if you come back from college taller than me I'm going to kick your ass."

Sam held his ribs. "It isn't my fault you stopped growing."

Kate tiptoed. "Both of you hush. I'm forever the shortest."

Dean knelt so she could get on his back. "There, now you aren't."

Sam took his gown off and folded it. He shook his hair back into place and put his cap, gown and diploma in the trunk of the impala.

The diner was packed but Lacy pulled some strings to make sure they got a table. She hadn't been around John and he made her a little nervous. "Normal orders?"

They said yes and waited for John to figure out what he wanted. "I'll have what ever Dean is having."

She told the cook what they wanted and went back to sit down.

They ate and talked with no worries. They laughed and enjoyed a genuinely good day.

Kate looked from each person and took mental snapshots that she could draw later. She saw the sadness underneath the smile in John's eyes. She knew he wanted to share the moment with Mary and the grief from losing her was ever present. She got an idea for a gift for Sam but also for John. She smiled to herself and couldn't wait to get home to her notebook.

##############

Missouri held another séance to speak with Ada. She knew that this would need to be the last time she contacted the spirit as spirits became more restless the more you bothered them. She would need to set Ada free so she could move on.

In the year 1746, Ada was tasked with seeking safety for her best friend's child. He was the last of his clan with the impending death of his parents and was certain to be caught in the downfall of the house. The roads were dangerous for a Scottish woman and she had to move quickly. She wrapped both babies in woolen blankets and hastily made her way out of the highlands. When she was stopped by British patrol she used her abilities to discourage them from asking any more questions. She had hidden them for so long that the rush became nauseating. Within a week a storm over took them and forced her to take both children and hide in a cave, away from the downpour and wind. She prayed and focused on keeping both children soothed and warm. They stayed in the cave for a period of nearly three days as the weather battered the outside of the mountain. The horse had been spooked and was nowhere to be seen. She was running out of rations and hope. With both children sleeping, she lit a torch and carried it with her, deeper into the cave in hopes of finding a small stream. The light danced along the walls of the cave and illuminated strange symbols. She ran her fingers a long the carvings and wondered who had left such writing. She heard voices and whispering. She scrambled back to the children and scooped them into her arms. She wrapped a blanket around them and stepped outside the cave. The wagon was in shambles and she had no way of tracking the horse as the rain had washed away any prints he had made. She found a bush of berries and filled her stomach with the fresh food. She didn't know which direction to head or how far she could possibly make it with two infants. She went back to the wagon to salvage what she could. The whispering she had heard earlier was becoming louder. She knew of spirits and perhaps the cave was laden with those that had passed on. She knelt and prayed that God would help her in her journey and provide her a way to safety. She heard British voices and darted into the cave.

The British soldiers saw a wagon and stopped to investigate. Two walked into the cave and saw a recent fire. They called into the cave and demanded that the inhabitants show themselves.

Ada pressed her back into a corner and swayed to settle the baby girl who was beginning to fuss.

A soldier heard a baby's cry and walked further into the cave.

Ada heard the cock of a gun and opened her eyes to see a tall British man pointing the barrel at her. "I have children."

The soldier beckoned the other man in. It had been a while since they had been alone with a woman.

Ada dug her nails into the grooves of writing and prayed silently for help. The whispers turned into a shrill whine and light filled the cave. She heard screaming and covered her ears. The whine died away and so did the light. She stumbled toward the sun light and was horrified to see the bodies of several soldiers on the ground. Her abilities were not those of someone who could cause death in such a way. Tears stung her eyes as both babies begun to cry as well. She unwrapped them from her chest and settled them. She rocked side to side and hummed a tune to sooth them. She heard a faint whisper and startled.

A man's voice became clearer with each breath.

Ada looked around but couldn't see where the voice was coming from. "Show yourself." She heard the fluttering of a bird's wings and squinted at the light coming into the cave.

A man stooped into the opening and crouched in front of her.

Ada reached for the weapon of one of the soldiers. "I did not harm these men."

The man tilted his head in what seemed like confusion.

Ada found the man peculiar. "Who are you?"

The man squinted at her. "A friend."

Ada saw a gentle glow around the man and knew he was not there to harm her or the children.

Missouri had been listening to the story. "Who was this man?"

Ada told her that the man, named Isaiah, helped her and both children travel to a safer destination. He was kind to her and later married her in order to keep suspicion away from herself as well as the children.

"He found you in a cave and helped you to safety and gave you his name?" Missouri was astonished.

Ada seemed lost in thought. "He was sent by God to help."

Missouri wasn't sure if she was being literal but the entire story did seem like an act of God. Missouri was becoming fatigued from the prolonged connection. "Is there anything more that could help Kate?"

Ada saw a light and moved toward it. "Isaiah gave the children his grace."

"His grace to do what?" Missouri asked as she felt the connection fade.

Ada turned and gave her a smile. She faded into the light and the connection broke.

Missouri felt the peace of a spirit crossing over to the other side but she was lost as to what Ada had meant with her last words. His grace to do what? How had Ada given her so much detail and still raised so many new questions. What kind of carvings were in the cave? What killed the soldiers? Why would a strange man take in a woman and two children during that time? She knew that she needed Kate's help to find those answers but the upcoming increase in power worried her as well. Kate was unique in a way that Missouri hadn't encountered before. She couldn't place her finger on it. She wrote down the details of what Ada told her and send John a message. She knew Sam was graduating and didn't want to interrupt his special day. She went to her computer and tried to cross reference some of what Ada had told her. She found an old newspaper article and printed it out. She sat down with a cup of tea and scanned the article. She read a certain paragraph and sat her tea down. "Well I'll be."

February 3, 1746 the bodies of seven British soldiers were found in and around a cave.

Missouri read the cause of death as a fire. The fire swept through so quickly that none of the men had a chance to run. One witness claimed that the fire was a burst of light. The witness was unreliable by reasons of insanity. Missouri took a sip of her tea. How did all seven men burn but Ada and the babies didn't?
