Chapter 5

Tails sat in the dining room at table covered with a white tablecloth as he fiddled with his fingers nervously.

"Tails, do you want anything to drink?" Amy's voice called from the kitchen.

Tails swallowed the lump in his throat and turned his head to the sound to direct his voice. "Uhm, some water please!"

Amy came back after five minutes holding a white steaming mug with a rose on it for her, and a glass of water for Tails. She put It in front of Tails and sat opposite him holding her mug. Amy looked at Tails more closely when she saw his facial expression. "Tails? Are you okay? Does Maddie and Tom know your here this early?"

Tails ignored the question and took a deep breath, trying to make himself ready to say the words he'd been rehearsing over and over in his head. He didn't feel ready. Not in the slightest, but he needed to the take a leap. For his in all but blood brother. "I'm going to figure out what actually happened to Sonic."

Amy's eyes widened in surprise. And then sighed, looking slightly sad. She gently took Tails hands and held them. "Listen," She began. "It-it's completely normal to doubt he's really gone but that can make accepting the truth more painful." She brushed her thumb against the back of his hand. "I didn't believe he was gone until the funeral."

Tails eyes were shining with unshed tears, his whole world seeming to slow down. He looked away, unable to meet Amy's eyes. Maybe he really was imagining things, maybe this was all hope just messing with him.

The voice somehow sounded quiet and loud at the same time. 'What about the note then?'

Wait, then what about the note?

How did he find the note if it wasn't real. His hand unconsciously reached into the bag and felt the note. It was real.

He looked back at Amy. "Please Amy, you know I like facts. The only way for me to be sure Sonic really is dead is if it's proven. Please," He was just trying to convince her to tell him but a part of him knew he was telling the truth.

Amy looked down for a few seconds, then winced. She looked sad, no- guilty...wait? No it's sad. She sighed "fine, if it helps you deal with him being gone."

Tails quickly took out his voice recorder and pressed the side button, the machine beeping before giving Amy a small nod to let her know it started.

Amy smiled while her eyes became watery. "Sonic and I planned to watch TV. I made cookies, drinks. We were really looking forward to it."

Tails took out his notebook, flicking to the first page (it was his first time using it) And readyed his pen. "And when did you plan this?"

"Wednesday."

"Wednesday? But Sonic went missing on Saturday?" Tails frowned.

Amy nodded and laughed weakly. "We were that excited. It was a comedy action thing that was going live that day. I-I was waiting for him and when he didn't come, I called, and- then I learned-" She broke off, putting her head down as her shoulders shook with silent tears.

Tails took her hands this time. Amy seemed to get over it as she used the base of her palm to wipe the tears away.

Tails suddenly felt sick with guilt. He disturbed Amy early in the morning, he stopped her mid baking, and he brought up bad memories for her. "Uh- Amy... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"It's OK," Thankfully Amy smiled at him. "Don't worry, I'm just happy to help you."

Again there was that pang of guilt.

Amy: waiting for Sonic to come in Saturday. They planned it on Wednesday. Sonic leves house and apparently jumps off the bridge. Must've happened between 10.45am- 11.10am. No cameras around to record what happened.

Tails walked home, seeing most people getting ready for work or leaving the house to go shopping. He walked faster. He had hoped to get there before his family woke up but now he just wanted to get there so they wouldn't worry. He checked his phone.

[ 5:56am ]

Shit. He probably shouldn't have stayed longer.

Tails neared the door and quickly unlocked it, stepping inside to see...

No one.

They were all still sleeping.

'Phew.'

See you guys later!
