Author's note: Just look at those reviews. (995 as I'm typing this. Who is going to be the 1000th?) The story is far from over, I'm just multitasking with the whole life thing and trying to write.
(July 4th)
Dean agreed to finally meet up with Marty's intern, Sophia. What better day to show a British intern around than America's independence day. He picked her up at the lab and felt a little awkward at first. She really was pretty but he was off his game.
"Are we meeting your family too?" Sophia asked. She smiled. "Your sister is darling."
Dean snorted. "She's something. We will run into them, I'm sure." He drove over to where the city of Sioux Falls was holding the day's event.
Sophia was wide-eyed at all of the American flags and the sea of red white and blue. Sure, there was a sense of pride in England but nothing like she was seeing then.
Dean had no idea how to navigate such a crowd. "I have to admit, I usually don't go to these things."
Sophia smiled brightly. "Then we will both be fish out of water."
Dean thought Sophia was sweet. She was bubbly and the accent was a plus.
Sophia's eyes landed on a food stall. "Do you truly believe that is the world's best burger?"
Dean shrugged. "Let's find out." His eyes were constantly on the move for any sign of danger. That was the main reason he typically didn't go to events. There were too many people. He paid for two burgers and a large plate of fries. He was amused that Sophia insisted that she get the same thing that he did. Amerian portion sizes and nutrition facts were wildly different than what she was used to.
Sophia eyed the burger. She waited for Dean to take a bite and then tried a bite as well. She closed her eyes.
"Good?" Dean asked.
Sophia nodded. She chewed slowly. "It is the best burger that I have had."
They sat and chatted as they ate. Dean learned that they had some things in common like music and movies. When they got up to walk around, he was amused by Sophia's growing collection of every free item that the vendors were handing out. "Will they allow all of those flags back in England?"
"My mother will love these," Sophia said.
Dean hadn't thought about them being souvenirs. If he ever went out of the country, he thought he may pick up things too. Yet, living in America all his life didn't give him that point of view. He felt something hit the back of his leg and grunted.
Andy rubbed his face. "Dean!"
Dean put a hand on his head. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I just hit my nose. You came!"
Dean chuckled. "Where are your mom and dad?"
Andy looked stunned. "Oh!"
Dean looked around and made eye contact with Caleb and gave him a thumbs up. He walked Andy back over to his parents.
"You can't run off," Caleb said.
"Sorry, dad. I saw Dean." Andy said.
Dean ruffled his hair and nudged him toward Caleb. "Sophia, this is Caleb and Andy. That is April and the little one is Ian."
Sophia smiled and introduced herself. "Is this your brother?"
"Kind of. Not by blood. He is a good friend." Dean said.
"Dean is kinda my uncle," Andy commented.
"Have the others made it yet?" Dean asked.
Caleb put Ian on his shoulders. "I don't know. We just got here. We are meeting Owen's family over here."
Dean nodded. He looked at Andy. "Stay with them. Maybe think about football because you nearly tackled me."
Andy grinned. "Mom says no football."
"You have to let the boy live," Dean said, jokingly.
"He can live without a concussion," April said.
Sophia was a tad confused.
"He is talking about American football, not what we call soccer." April said.
Sophia suddenly understood. As they walked way she asked why it was called football if you didn't kick it.
Dean shrugged. "Huh, I've never thought about it."
(Sam and Jess)
Jess was enjoying a quiet day with Sam. She had begun to relax a little. She was teetering between peace and pain. She had gotten a half-assed phone call from Ross the day before. He finally called to tell her that Martha died. He said there would be arrangements but it would take a longer time due to the cruise and the death being outside of the United States. He wasn't unkind about it but he didn't seem overly heartbroken. Jess thought that it could just be the way he was coping.
Sam had been watching Jess quite closely. He was thrilled that she fit in so well with the family. She had started to lose her smile as Martha got more and more demeaning. He saw it more often once they got to Bobby's house. She was more relaxed. He worried about going back to Stanford, especially after what happened. Part of him was set on going back. He worked his ass off to get into college and he had a full ride. It would be foolish to not go back. He had a year under his belt. That was an entire year of studying and tests and he pulled it off with a 4.0 gpa. Not going back would make that useless. On the other hand, what would it cost Jess? He didn't know everything that was going on in her head but would it cause her to lose her smile again?
Kate hopped down the stairs. "When are we going?"
"You and Taylor are going with Bobby and Karen," Sam said. "So, whenever. I figured we would go right before fireworks."
Taylor joined them. "One of my friend's parents are one of the vendors. I want to get down there and say hi."
Bobby held up his keys. "Karen and I are good to go. Sam, you can take the other car and do what you want."
The house was almost too quiet with everyone gone. John had left for a hunt and everyone else was at the event or on their way.
Jess sat down on the sofa and tucked her feet under her.
Sam studied her. Something was on her mind. He sat down beside her. "Now's about the only time we will get to talk."
Jess put a pillow in her lap and fiddled with the embroidery. "I'm scared to go back to Stanford."
"I know. What do you want to do?" Sam asked.
Jess frowned. "I don't know."
"You can tell me." Sam said, gently.
Jess looked away from him. "You are going to become a lawyer. You belong there."
"That isn't what I asked, babe." Sam said.
"Sam, I don't know. Nothing makes sense." Jess admitted.
"I guess, option A is we go back. We both get back into school and just try to move on. Option B, we don't." Sam said.
"We have to. You're literally getting paid to got to school. Not going back would be letting yet another demon destroy your life." Jess said with teary eyes.
"Jess, the only thing that could destroy my life would be if you were unhappy or if something happened to you." Sam said.
Jess loved that Sam was so understanding but he would give anything for anyone but himself. She knew that he would throw Stanford away if she asked him to. "We can go back. I have to go to the funeral anyway. I miss our friends. Sam, I don't know if Stanford is for me. I don't even know if my dad is going to keep paying tuition. I could just stay home all day and become a hermit or I could get a job. That way, you could still go to school."
"You can't be a hermit. You are too social for that. I don't want you to have to work." Sam said.
"It is 2002 Sam. Women work."
Sam rubbed his face. "You know what I mean."
"I know. I'm just saying, I think we should go back and just take it one day at a time." Jess said.
Sam reached for her hand and took it in his own. "I've got your back."
Jess smiled. "We have the house to ourselves. What do you say we use the privacy and then go see some fireworks?"
Sam didn't need the offer to be made twice. He knew she was deflecting but it was clear that she needed to focus on other things.
(Kate and Taylor)
Taylor ran into a few people that he knew from school. There was an awkward conversation with Nate.
Nate slowly approached Taylor. "Hey."
Taylor gave him a sad smile. "Hey."
"I, uh, miss hanging out... well before I got stupid." Nate said.
Taylor relaxed slightly. "I think we both got a little stupid."
"Maybe, we could hang out again sometime. I promise I won't try to talk you into anything. I'm all community service and helping old ladies cross the street these days." Nate said.
Kate took the time to talk to Ellie. She felt bad because Ellie hadn't done anything wrong. She returned the hug that Ellie gave her and sighed. "How is your summer?"
Ellie smiled. "It has been kind of boring. Nate was grounded forever so we couldn't go anywhere."
"Yeah, we were grounded for what felt like forever." Kate commented.
Bobby and Karen stayed close by but gave the kids a little bit of space.
Karen was a little overwhelmed. When she had last been in Sioux Falls during the 4th of July, the town was smaller. There weren't as many people and everything looked different. She hadn't left the house too often since returning. Technology had made leaps and bounds during the time that she was gone. "What if someone asks how I am back?"
"No one really knew you before. I sure as hell haven't gotten cozy enough with any of these people for them to know what you looked like. I don't think most people knew anything had happened. I'm not a social person." Bobby said.
Karen smiled. "No you aren't."
Bobby put an arm around her. "That is why we work so well. I'll let you do all the talking."
Sam and Jess finally made it to the event and joined Bobby's crew on a blanket.
Taylor raised an eyebrow. "I was starting to think you weren't coming."
Sam discreetly elbowed him. "Zip it."
Taylor snorted. "Yeah, take your own advice. Ow!" He shook his arm out to combat the muscle knot that Sam had created when he punched him.
"Just because Dean isn't here doesn't mean you need to take over being a pain in my ass." Sam said, jokingly.
Kate turned her head. "It is called consistancy, Sam."
Jess's eyes twinkled. She sqeezed Sam's hand and scooted closer to him.
At Kate's insistance, Dean found them and sat on the other side of Sam. "What did I miss?"
Sam glared at Taylor.
Dean cracked a grin. "Oh."
Kate said hello to Sophia and asked if she was enjoying the evening.
"Yes, this is wonderful. The culture here is so different." Sophia said.
"Are you staying out tonight?" Taylor asked.
Dean smacked the side of his head.
"Boy, I'd keep my mouth shut if I was you." Bobby said, lightly.
Taylor rubbed his head. "Yeah, I'm figuring that out."
Andy's eyes grew wide as the first fireworks started shooting into the sky. He had seen fireworks from far away and then when Dean lit the ones at Bobby's house but these were massive.
Caleb watched the colors from the fireworks dance across Andy's eyes. He smiled and looked at Ian. Ian had the same look on his face.
April met Caleb's eyes and smiled. She couldn't say anything over the sound of the firework show but nothing really needed to be said.
As the night ended and the last fireworks burst into the sky, Kate was feeling fatigued. She enjoyed the show but it was also very loud. No one else seemed bothered. Maybe hearing was one of those things that came with her abilities. Maybe she'd have John's hearing one day. He had been in combat and he should have little to no hearing. Nope, John Winchester was like a bird of prey, able to hear a mouse scurrying under a foot of snow. Except, instead of a mouse it was Kate and her tendency to make sassy comments. She could communicate most easily with John, aside from Taylor. She could push words and thoughts into his head to warn him about demons or other things. That ability had presented itself long before most of the others did. So, that bit of information furthered her theory that John really did have abilities.
Dean nudged Kate. "You are about to fall asleep."
Kate yawned. "I'm a little tired."
Dean stood up and helped Sophia up, followed by Kate. "So, let's get you home and you can go to bed."
"I can ride with Bobby." Kate said.
"Okay, I'll be home in just a little bit." He felt of her head. She wasn't warm. "Do you feel okay?"
"Yes." Kate said. She felt off but not supernatural off. She was just tired as though she hadn't slept for a week.
Dean tilted her chin to get a better look at her eyes. For a field assesment in the dark, surrounded by flashing lights from cars and vendors, she looked okay. He patted her back. "You'll let me know if you aren't okay, right?"
Kate nodded. She stretched and trudged after Bobby on their way back to the car.
"You are a lovely brother." Sophia said.
Dean blushed. "Oh, she gets sick sometimes. I just wanted to make sure she wasn't getting sick again."
"She speaks highly of you." Sophia said.
Dean snorted. "Most of the time she's on my case about something."
Sophia chuckled. "When she was telling me about you, she had nothing but good things to say. She adores you."
Dean felt a flicker of warmth in his chest. "She's pretty cool, I guess."
Sophia followed Dean back to the car and got into the passenger seat. "I had fun."
Dean took a deep breath. "I did too. If you want, I can show you those bars tomorrow night."
"Yes, I would love that." Sophia said, brightly.
Dean drove her back to the place she was staying. He waited for her to go inside and shut the door before pulling away. He did have fun. There was no pressure. He wasn't trying to be flashy or impress her.
Andy found his second wind and ran circles around his parents as they headed back to their house. The benefit of living in town was that they didn't need to rely on the truck, and therefore fight for parking.
Caleb bumped into Andy. "Stop running around my feet. I'm going to step on you."
Andy stopped for all of five seconds before he got distracted by a glow stick and cut April off, causing her to stumble.
Caleb grabbed Andy and swung him around so that he could be on his back.
Andy was lost in the air for a second and then wrapped his arms over Caleb's back. "I can walk, dad."
Caleb chuckled. "No you can't. You can hang on for a piggy back ride or go back to walking, trip someone, and get your butt smacked."
Andy squeaked. Piggy back rides were fun too.
Ian happily rode in the wagon, his head growing heavier with each step. He was doubled over, half asleep by the time they made it to their front door.
Caleb lifted him and folded the wagon.
April held the door open and offered to take Ian.
"I've got him." Caleb said. He left the wagon inside the front door and let Andy off of his back.
April got a warm cloth and wiped Ian's face and hands. Cotton candy and toddlers were a bad mix.
Ian curled up in his bed without a fight and pulled his stuffed animal to his chest.
Andy wasn't quite ready for bed. "I'm not sleepy."
Caleb sighed. "You are. You just don't think you are. Slow down."
Andy spun in circles.
April could see him putting up a fight and things spiraling.
Caleb grabbed one of the chapter books from Andy and Ian's room and told April she could get ready for bed. He read two pages, front and back before Andy collapsed. "Uh huh, told you that you were tired."
Andy was dead weight in Caleb's arms. "I'm not tired. I'm just gona go to bed so you and mama can rest."
Caleb hid a smile. "Alright, that is kind of you, buddy." He tucked Andy in and turned off the lights. They needed each day to be as good as that day.
(The next morning)
Taylor woke up and went downstairs. Food was already ready and everyone but Kate was awake. He licked his lips. "Is that the deer I got?"
"Yes." Karen said. She put a few thin slices of meat on a plate for him.
"We only keep you around because you bring home deer meat." Dean said.
"I'm sure my nana would be thrilled to know that you forgot all about the food she cooks." Taylor said.
Dean cleared his throat. "I guess we keep you around for that too."
Karen squeezed Taylor's shoulder. "I, for one, would be upset if you weren't around."
Dean leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. "Dad called, he wanted to talk to you."
Taylor slowly chewed his bite of food. "Why?"
"I don't know. What did you do?" Dean asked.
Taylor swallowed hard.
"He wasn't mad." Sam said with a scoff.
"You were bitching about him being a smartass yesterday. Then, you ruin my fun." Dean said.
Taylor looked at Bobby for confirmation.
"He just wanted to talk." Bobby said.
Taylor let his shoulders relax and cracked his neck. "I have been trying my hardest not to be on anybody's bad side."
"You're doing find, son." Bobby said.
Taylor finished his breakfast and called John back.
John stopped what he was doing. "Pack a bag. I need your help on a hunt."
"My help?" Taylor asked.
"Yes." John said.
"Not Dean or Sam?" Taylor asked.
"If I had needed their help don't you think I would have told them to pack a bag and not you?" John asked.
Taylor stammered. "Well... I uh... How many days?"
"Two if all goes right." John said. He sighed. "Research what a rawhead is. Pack your stuff. I'll be there this afternoon."
"Yes sir," Taylor said and put the phone down. "Uh, Bobby, do you have any.."
Bobby pointed to a stack of books. He knew what John was after and why he needed Taylor. "Already marked the pages for you."
Taylor sat down and read through the first few pages. John was hunting a couple Rawheads. They preyed on children, which Taylor thought John would consider since Taylor was still a child. They were fast and strong and deadly. He suddenly got it. "Oh, the only way to kill them is to shock the crap out of them."
Bobby nodded. "Seems like we might have a walking electrical box here, or so I've heard."
Taylor grinned. He felt special. He understood why Dean and Sam hadn't been asked to help. He was the only one with a true advantage. "Awesome."
Dean had been given a different hunt and planned on taking Sam for old times sake. It was not a high stakes hunt but Sam was still his favorite hunting partner except for John.
Taylor ran upstairs and gathered his stuff. He zipped his duffle and carried it downstairs. "Kate is still asleep. I wasn't really quiet and she didn't so much as stir."
Dean groaned and went to check on her. He rubbed her back and tried to rouse her.
Kate finally grumbled and rolled over.
"I'm making sure you're okay. Don't look at me like that." Dean said.
"I'm sleepy." Kate said. "What time is it?"
Dean looked at his watch. "Eight."
Kate tried to sit up quickly but her head hurt. "Crap."
Dean steadied her. "Hey, no reason to get out of bed." He felt of her head again.
Kate jerked her head away. "I'm not running a fever."
Dean took a slow breath. "No reason to try to bite my head off. I'm worried."
Kate stood up. "I'm fine."
Dean followed her down stairs. He was wondering if he should wait to leave.
Jess sat beside Kate and chatted with her. She noticed the moodiness and tiredness. After Kate was done eating, she pulled her to the side. "Do you just feel tired or is anything else going on?"
"I don't know. My stomach kind of hurts." Kate said.
Jess continued asking questions and settled on a possible answer. She suggested that Kate take a bubble bath and relax.
Dean found Jess. "Did she tell you what was wrong?"
Jess sighed. "She may just feel under the weather but from the symptoms, she may be about to start."
Dean blinked. "Start what?"
Jess looked at him like he was dumb. "Dean.."
Dean slowly peiced it together. "Oh god, no. Now? She is 12."
"Yeah, that is usually when it starts, Dean." Jess said.
"Are you sure?" Dean asked.
Jess shook her head. "No but it is possible."
Dean paced. "Sam and I were going to leave soon. That is a big thing. Should I stay? Is she going to need... support?"
Jess blew air through her nose. "Dean, I think it is best if you leave. You are going to smother her and embarrass her. She doesn't need an older brother around for this."
Dean was grateful that Jess and Karen were around. He grabbed Sam and headed out the door. He stopped on the front porch. "Taylor, I now it doesn't need to be said but don't do anything stupid."
Taylor huffed. "I won't."
Dean nodded slowly. "Uh, here."
Taylor took a slip of paper from him and read it. "What is this?"
"Uh, that is where I want you to meet me."
"Today? Dean, dad is picking me up." Taylor said.
Dean shook his head. "Not now you. Uh, older you."
"You want me to hang onto this and time travel back to today, at this time and place?" Taylor asked.
Dean clapped him on the back. "There you go. I knew you'd get it."
Taylor threw his hands up as Dean ran down the steps. "Sure, just hop right back through time. No problem."
Dean drove out of town and pulled over next to a mile marker.
Sam asked what he was doing.
"Just hold on." Dean got out and leaned against the side of the car. He heard a whoosh and spun around. "Hah, knew you could do it."
Taylor held up the now tattered slip of paper. "Do you know how long I've had this?"
Dean approached him and stopped a few feet away. "What is this shit?" He motioned from Taylor's feet to his head.
Sam got out. He smirked. "I told you he grew up."
"How old are you?" Dean asked, walking around Taylor.
"18." Taylor said.
"Not 21?" Dean asked.
"No, I'm pretty sure just 18." Taylor said.
Dean grunted and looked Taylor up and down. The kid was as tall as Sam if not taller. It pissed him off to some extent. How dare both of his younger brothers outgrow him.
Taylor was amused by Dean's frustration, as he had been for the past two years. "So, why am I meeting you out in the middle of nowhere?"
"Oh, right. Uh. So... I was told that Kate went through some major changes when she turned 12. Then, you when you were 15. I guess your abilities were the main thing. Well, do you remember anything about today?" Dean asked.
Taylor stiffened. "Why?"
"Well... Kate.. Jess... Jess thinks the reason Kate is so worn out and moody is... well.. you know." Dean said.
Taylor rubbed his face. "This is what you made me time travel for?"
"Well, I'd like a heads up. Is this normal teenage girl stuff. Is this nephilian stuff? Is it both? What kind of changes are we talking about?" Dean asked.
Taylor knew what changes happened. He couldn't tell them everything. "Changes like attitude and mood swings. Man, if you think Kate could be a pill before, you just wait. Her abilities change. She gets stronger. If you are wondering about the next week, she isn't a normal girl. She will get the pissy attitude without the other stuff. Does that help?"
Dean slowly nodded. He scratched his chin. "Any other pointers you can give me?"
Taylor shifted. "I can't really say much. You know how the whole paradox thing works."
"Is this a good time or a bad time?" Dean asked.
Taylor considered it. "Both. I mean, today isn't bad. I don't know. It is all a blur. I'm on a time crunch here."
Dean stepped back. "Thanks."
Taylor nodded and faded away.
"You made him come all the way back here to ask him that?" Sam asked.
Dean sighed and got back in the car. "Over and over again we are being told that her powers come in when she becomes a woman or whatever. You have seen how much stronger she has gotten. You have seen how reckless she is. I just want to know if the nuke is going to wipe us all out."
"Maybe start with not calling her a nuke," Sam said.
"A cuddly, cat-loving, nuke," Dean said. He pulled the car back onto the road and turned the music on, purposefully loud enough to bug Sam.
Sam rolled his eyes. Dean was nothing if not predictable.
John drove back to Sioux Falls and picked Taylor up. "What are we up against?"
"A rawhead. You want me to zap them." Taylor said.
"They are still dangerous, even with your abilities so you will be cautious. You will follow orders. Can you still hit an object without touching it?" John asked.
Taylor looked at his hands. "You might not want me to attempt it while the truck is moving."
John snorted lightly but didn't comment.
(Back at Bobby's house)
Kate took a bath and then took another nap. She was tired but mostly just cranky. Talking to anyone made her angry. Opening her eyes made her angry. She stayed in her room until Jess forced her to go outside.
"Some sunshine will help. I know you don't feel good but it will get worse if you stay up in your room by yourself." Jess said.
"I just want to be alone." Kate said.
"Then you can be alone outside. Well, not totally alone. I'll be there but I don't have to talk." Jess said.
Kate found a sunny spot and laid down on the ground. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Jess laid down beside her and tried to get comfortable.
After a while, Kate finally spoke. "Are you going back?"
Jess sighed. "Yes. We have to."
Kate sunk.
"We will just have to see how things go at first. I can't ask Sam to give up his dream." Jess said.
"I like when you're here. It is nice having a girl around." Kate said.
Jess smiled. "I like having you around. Listen, if you ever need me, I'm a phone call away. If you need space, you can come hang out with us at Stanford."
"Thanks," Kate said. She felt some of her anger and discomfort melting away. "You are right, the sun helps."
(Sam and Dean)
Sam turned the knife over in his hand. "Feels weird now."
"You're out of practice. Probably out of shape." Dean said.
Sam gave Dean one of his bitch faces. "I'm not out of shape."
Dean smirked and tossed Sam a bag. "We will see about that."
Sam followed Dean into a newer house. "So a ghost is haunting a nice place like this?"
"Yep. Something got brought in, I bet." Dean said.
They asked the homeowners to leave and set up shop in the living room.
Dean read the notes that John had given him. "Looks like the spirit may be a kid."
Sam frowned. No child became an angry spirit over anything good. He helped look for anything that might be tethering the ghost. He walked into the owner's son's room and looked around. There was a binder with baseball cards. Most were in good condition but one was dirty and worn out.
Dean held up the emf reader. "Looks promising."
A chill spread across the room and a boy appeared in the corner. His lips were blue and he had bruises.
Dean lowered his salt rifle. "We don't want to hurt you."
The boy looked scared.
Sam followed Dean's lead. "What happened to you?"
The boy looked down and away from them.
Dean slowly pulled out his lighter. "Do you want to leave here?"
The boy nodded.
Dean paused. "Do you hurt people because you are angry?"
The boy nodded.
"Did someone do this to you?" Dean asked. He felt a flow of energy in the room.
Sam watched Dean. He had always been a caretaker but he had changed.
"Look, I'm sorry. You didn't deserve that. If you stay calm while we burn this card, a nice lady will show up and take you straight to heaven." Dean said.
The boy blinked. "Heaven is real?"
"Yeah. It isn't pearly gates and that stuff. It is kind of like your biggest dream. If you want a pony, that is what you will get. Anything you could imagine." Dean said.
The boy stepped back. He looked sad but calm.
Dean lit the card on fire and let Sam stomp it out.
Sam sat down on the floor. "Was that too easy?"
"Nah, man. The kid didn't mean any harm. Whoever did that to him.." He trailed off.
"You're a natural with kids." Sam said.
Dean swept the ashes from the card into the palm of his hand. "I'm not."
Sam didn't argue. He knew Dean was processing.
Dean washed the ash off his hand and looked down at the sink. The kid had to be around Andy's age. He didn't know the backstory but he didn't need to. "Let's let the owners know the house is clear."
Sam dialed the husband's number. He updated him and gathered his stuff. "Do you want to knock another one off the list?"
Dean sighed. "Yeah, you navigate. I'll drive."
(John and Taylor)
John got out of the truck. He pointed out a building with graffiti. "That is where kids have been going missing from. Reports lead me to believe that these are rawheads."
Taylor went back through the information again. He followed John into the darkened building. "So if I see something move, I zap it?"
"Let's see what you have." John said.
Taylor held his hand out and let a beam of electricity climb up the wall. "It wouldn't hurt for me to recharge."
John stood back and let Taylor strip an electrical wire.
Taylor got what he needed and let the wire go. "I'm surprised you are so chill with this."
"I'm not. I would have knocked you off the wire if you had twitched."
Taylor didn't doubt that. He let John go into the basement first.
"Keep your head up. Eyes open. Follow orders." John said.
Taylor nodded. "Yes, sir."
As soon as John hit the stairs, he could hear movement. He kept Taylor behind him and made his way over to a light switch.
Taylor touched John's back, altering him.
John fired a shot at an approaching figure. He twisted so that Taylor had a clear shot.
Taylor held out his hand and fried the, correctly identified, rawhead. He stepped in front of John and did the same to a second one.
John couldn't touch Taylor without being electrocuted. "Drop it."
Taylor dropped his hands immediately, letting the two body's hit the floor.
John nudged both of them with his boot.
"Dad, down!" Taylor yelled and lit the last one up.
When the body hit the floor, John checked it as well. "They're gone."
Taylor got back behind John as they finished clearing the basement. When John relaxed, Taylor did as well.
John clapped him on the back. "Excellent work."
Taylor felt immense pride. John had hand-picked him for that hunt and he had done exactly what John wanted.
John had Taylor dig a large hole in the woods and helped him toss the bodies in. He saw that Taylor was deep in thought. "Speak your mind."
Taylor looked up at him. "Those things are strong and fast. They can only be killed by electrocution. Does that not sound familiar? We know that a scientist created the freaks. We know that a vampire can turn. What all do you think they are mixed with? Were they handcrafted first and then run out and start changing things. "Dean and Caleb got attacked in a basement."
John slowly soaked in the information. It made a whole lot of sense. "If we can find out what they are crossed with, we can take them down."
"Can I tell Kate?"
John nodded.
Taylor closed his eyes and focused on Kate, pushing into her head.
(Back at Bobby's)
Kate jumped out of her seat, hitting her knee on the bottom of the table. "Holy shit!"
Karen startled. "What?"
Kate stumbled and made her way to Bobby's office, pulling books off the shelf and rifling through papers.
"Girl, you had better stop ripping my office to pieces." Bobby said.
Kate put one of the books down. "Taylor sent me an idea. The freaks have features like rawheads do. If we can figure out what they were made from, we can kill them."
Bobby explained it to Karen and brought his food to his office. "I'm assuming you have a method to your madness."
Kate looked up from a stack of papers. "Uh, you could assume that."
"Well, I'm in."
Jess slid into the office. "No one is figuring this out without me."
Kate patted the floor beside her. She fist-bumped Jess. "You and me, we've got this. Girl power."
