Another week of school flies by. I defeat a couple of witches in the hospital district, and unexpectedly find myself fighting alongside Inui on Thursday. It turns out she shares the charm power with me, but her primary attack power comes from her pink flames. She's as weirdly chatty as always, gushing about her boyfriend and letting slip that he holds that position as a result of her wish. Honestly, it makes me feel a little sorry for her, that she wasted her wish to enter into an obviously abusive relationship. Sadly, there's nothing I can do to change her mind, so I don't even bother trying.
Then on Sunday, I catch a train out to Kamihama, intending to see some of the sights there. I've roughly based my travel plan on Ashley's side story from the game, though I'm not really expecting things to play out the same as they do in the game – after all, I'm about a month and a half early. Still, it would be great if I could make some connections there, at least.
When I arrive in Kamihama, I spend an hour or two checking out various shops in the so-called technology district in Koushou Ward. Many of these shops sell manga, anime, and related merchandise, and I end up buying a few things. Then I spot the maid café I was looking for and step inside.
"Welcome home, master!"
I'm greeted with a smile by a pink-haired girl about my own age in a maid outfit. My eyes are drawn to her left hand however, which bears a ring signifying her to be a magical girl. I can't see the fingernail mark though, due to how she holds her hands. There's something vaguely familiar about her too… she must be one of the Magia Record side characters, but I can't seem to place her. Maybe if I knew her name… but she doesn't seem to have a name tag.
"How can Ikumi-chan help master?"
Oh. So her name is Ikumi. That name is definitely familiar to me, but I still can't remember anything much about her. She tilts her head quizzically at me, so I muster up an answer.
"Um… some tea… and maybe a snack…"
"Please come right over here, master," Ikumi says.
She directs me to a table and proffers a menu. I look over it and select a jasmine green tea and a slice of mandarin cheesecake. Then Ikumi takes off with my order.
I've never actually been to a maid café before, but I've seen them many, many times in anime and manga. Even with that experience, this one seems somehow different. There is a raised dais at one end of the café where two maids are performing a song and dance routine, the sort of thing one would expect from an idol. I'm pretty sure it's not normal for the maids in a maid café to perform musical numbers.
Speaking of idols, the reason I chose to come here today instead of yesterday is because there was a post on Fumion Sayaka's official Twitter account that said there would be a concert in the afternoon. I check the time on my phone, but there's plenty of time left, so I settle down to enjoy my snack.
Eventually I escape the maid café and look for a bus I can catch to Mizuna ward, but then I suddenly sense a witch, and it's actually quite close by, so I hurry down a nearby alleyway and sure enough, there's a portal there, resembling a triangle with a sphere inside it. It seems to be flickering a bit, indicating that someone is already fighting within. I take a moment to debate whether to leave it to them or to show up and introduce myself… yeah, who am I kidding? That's why I came here in the first place, right?
So I transform and step into the barrier. I find myself in an infinite expanse of sand dunes littered with all manner of sand toys, tires, balls, flags, and blocks. The balls immediately react to my presence, gathering themselves up into several caterpillar-like forms, with sea shells for eyes and mouth, and a sand shovel or similar toy as a tail. They attack me by simply flinging their own ball-shaped segments at me. I swat them right back with telekinesis, but it doesn't have any effect on them.
Brandishing my sword, I stride through the pack of familiars, slashing at any that approach. It seems they're weak to slashing attacks, for a single slash usually finishes one off. There are a lot of them, so it doesn't indicate a lot of progress, but it does keep them off me as I head deeper into the labyrinth.
Finally, I locate the door to the witch's chamber. Runes above the door spell out her name, Zenobia. I kick the door down and charge into the witch's room, startling the magical girl who's already fighting there and leaving her open to an attack. Since it's my fault, I direct Teddy Mk II to block it.
This magical girl is on the young side, probably still an elementary schooler, wearing a white dress and cloak with blue accents, her hair tied into short twintails and, for once, not dyed. Her weapon appears to be a giant decorative toothpick of all things, the sort that you'd stick in a sandwich to keep it from falling apart. One end bears a spade-shaped blade, while the other is crafted to look like a slice of orange.
She recovers quickly from my dynamic entry, and as I move Teddy Mk II out of her way once more, she resumes her attack, wielding her weapon like a double weapon – the spade end functions as a spear, while the orange slice seems to serve as a bludgeon and shield. Then she plants the pick in the ground, gripping it with both hands, and releases a blast of energy from the orange slice.
It looks like my help won't be needed here, because that ultimate attack of hers finishes off the witch in one blow, and she snatches the grief seed out of the air before turning to bow to me in greeting.
"Um, I haven't seen you before around here… it's nice to meet you! I'm Chiaki Riko!"
As the labyrinth collapses around us, I introduce myself in return.
"I'm Ashley Taylor, an exchange student from California," I say. "Sorry about startling you there… although I could tell someone was already fighting this witch, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Looks like my help wasn't needed, huh?"
"Y-yeah, it wasn't a very strong witch," Riko says. "Sometimes I struggle a lot more…"
"But you can still beat most witches on your own?" I ask.
Riko nods. "Most of the time… but sometimes I'm forced to retreat," she says. "I think there must be another magical girl in the area, because I don't usually find the same witch again after I've retreated…"
Well, she's right. There should be at least one more magical girl in this area, Amane Tsukasa, and of course there's Ikumi from the maid café too. I'm glad it was Riko I ran into, though… not that Tsukasa is a bad person, but since she was one of the antagonists in first arc of the Magia Record game, I'd prefer she doesn't know my face before the Wings of the Magius form.
"I even saw another magical girl a little while ago," I say. "She was in the maid café."
As I speak, I power down, and Riko follows my example, blinking at me.
"Huh? How'd you know she was a magical girl if she didn't transform?" she asks.
"Well, she had a ring like this on," I reply, showing my own off.
Riko looks at the ring on her hand and blinks.
"Ohhh… I never thought of that," she says. "You're pretty smart, onee-san!"
"Well, I don't think you need to be that smart to figure out that much…"
"So you said you're an exchange student from California?" Riko says. "Where is that?"
"Huh? California is in America…"
"Oh! So you can speak English!"
"Well yeah, of course."
"Which school are you studying at?"
"Well… Mitakihara High School. From a nearby city."
"Oh, so why'd you come to Kamihama?"
"There were some things I wanted to see here," I explain. "In fact, I was just on the way to Sayu-Sayu's concert…"
Riko tilts her head. "Oh… some of my classmates really like her too," she says. "There's one who brags that she's been to every live since she debuted…"
I chuckle. "You sound like you're not too into her, huh?"
"W-well… I think I can sing better than her, if I tried," Riko mutters.
"You could be right," I say. "Her singing's nothing special on its own… but she makes up for it in other ways. Well, to be honest, I only recently found out about her on Twitter and Niconico, so this is my first live concert…"
"Hey, um… do you mind if I come too?" Riko asks eagerly.
"Huh? But I thought you weren't really into her," I say, startled.
"Well, you seemed so passionate about her, so I thought I should experience it at least once…"
"Will your parents be okay with that?" I ask.
"O-oh, right! Um… l-let's go ask them! Come with me!"
I check my phone quickly, but there should still be just over two hours to get to the venue, so I figure I may as well humour her. I follow her to the small shop her parents run, a sort of fast food place specializing in sandwiches, boxed lunches, and fried foods. Her father looks up from the deep fryer when she calls out to him, and waves.
"Welcome back, Riko-chan! Have you found a new friend?"
"Yes!" Riko says. "This is Ashley Taylor! She's from America!"
"Oh my," Mr Chiaki says. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Taylor. I hope my daughter hasn't been giving you any trouble?"
"Ah, no, not at all," I reply. "She did ask a lot of questions, but I don't really mind."
"Oh, Daddy, I wanted to ask you something!" Riko says. "Can I go to Mizuna Ward with onee-san?"
Mr Chiaki blinks. "What's this about, all of a sudden?"
"Well, I happened to mention I was going to see one of Sayu-Sayu's live concerts," I admit. "And she seemed interested for some reason, so… if it's alright with you, I don't mind taking her."
"What's going on?" Mrs Chiaki says, coming out from the back.
Mr Chiaki quickly fills her in, and they discuss the matter amongst themselves for a minute or two. Then Riko's mother turns to us with a smile.
"Well, I think it's a great idea," she says. "You'll be back for dinner, right?"
"Of course!" Riko says.
"I'll make sure she gets back before it gets dark," I add. "There should be plenty of time after the concert."
"Well, in that case, have fun!" Mrs Chiaki says.
"Oh, but before you go," Mr Chiaki says. "Would you like a croquette? They're freshly made."
"Now that you mention it, I am a little hungry," I admit. "I had a rather light lunch… sure! How much is it?"
"Oh, don't worry about that," Mr Chiaki says. "Think of it as payment for looking after Riko for the day… plus you'll need to buy her a ticket too, right?"
I nod. "They're relatively cheap as far as concert tickets go, and I can get a child's price for her so it's even cheaper, but… yeah, I'll have to buy one."
"Well then, how about two each?" he says.
And without waiting for a reply, he hands me a bundle containing two piping hot croquettes, then passes two more to Chiaki. I bite into one and close my eyes for a moment, savouring the flavour.
"Oh my god, this is amazing!" I exclaim, falling back to English. "Incredible, awesome, scrumptious!"
I wolf it down in thirty seconds flat, not even caring about the temperature. I suppose my magical girl body might mean I'm more resistant to burns, but I'm not sure… that's just my speculation. With the first one finished, I settle down to enjoy the second one more slowly.
"Well, I'm glad you like it so much," Mr Chiaki says. "Feel free to drop by anytime if you want a nice hot croquette."
"I'll keep that in mind," I say. "But I won't be able to come by often, since I'm studying in Mitakihara."
"Ah, well, whenever you can is fine," Mr Chiaki shrugs.
"Let's go, let's go!" Riko says excitedly, tugging on my sleeve.
"Right, let's go," I nod.
We head off, Riko leading the way, and before I know it we've arrived at a bus stop. I take a look at the schedules posted, to make sure we're at the right stop, but I had no need to worry. There'll be a bus headed to Mizuna Ward in about ten minutes.
While we wait for the bus, Riko bombards me with questions, about what it's like being a magical girl in America, about the sorts of witches I've fought, and many other things besides. I end up telling her about Sarra and Alice, the François sisters, Nisha, and the quartet of magical girls that I'm staying with in Mitakihara. The bus comes while we're chatting, and after paying the fare, we continue the conversation on the bus. She seems particularly interested in Nisha.
"So, she pokes at your soul gem and stuff?" Riko asks.
I nod. "Yeah, something like that… and apparently it makes you a little bit stronger."
"So that means there are other magical girls like Mitama-nee… that's awesome!"
"Mitama? I suppose you must mean Yakumo Mitama, right?"
Riko nods. "Yeah… how do you know about her?"
I give her a little white lie. It's sort of true, but her name never actually came up.
"Nisha told me about her… I should probably drop by at some point. Not today, though… it's too soon. How did you meet her?"
"Oh, well… I was saved by another magical girl, who took me there because she was worried," Riko explains.
Ah. So that event has already happened too, has it? If it's the same as in the game, that means Kurumi Manaka is already a magical girl…
"What's that magical girl's name?" I ask.
Riko thinks about that really hard.
"Um… I think it was… Ku… Ku… Kuru… mi? I'm sorry, I can't quite remember…"
"Ah, that's fine, I was just curious," I say.
Eventually, we get off the bus and make our way to the venue. Fortunately we arrive a little early, giving me plenty of time to grab an extra ticket for Riko. Then we wait around to get into the hall, and once the doors finally open, we go with the flow and find our seats.
Finally, the lights go on and the girl herself, Fumino Sayuki, steps onstage and calls out her catchphrase.
"I'll slash my way into your heart! It's me, your beloved blade-bearing beauty! Sayuki Fumino, cutting in!"
The crowd cheers, and the blue-haired girl two rows in front is especially loud. Even from behind, I recognize her. She has twintails held in place with pink flowery scrunchies, but a good amount of hair also hangs loose to her shoulders as well. That's gotta be Minami Rena, one of the main characters in the game. I even catch a glimpse of her magical girl ring as she raises her hands in the air.
And then the song begins, and the audience calms down… somewhat, at least.
As we exit the venue after the concert, Riko offers her opinion.
"That was pretty exciting! I think I kind of get why my classmate likes her so much."
"So, you'd come again?" I ask.
"Well… I'm not sure about that," Riko demurs. "I still think I could sing better than her if I tried…"
"W-what!? You take that back, right now!"
The indignant shout comes from none other than… yeah, Rena. Riko eeps and clings to my arm, looking fearfully at Rena.
"Hey, calm down," I say. "It's not like she's wrong, after all."
"Sayu-Sayu is perfect!" Rena retorts. "I won't allow anyone to badmouth her!"
"I'm not badmouthing her," I retort. "I'm stating my opinion. I don't think it's wrong to criticize things you love, you know. It's another way of showing how much you love it. If anything, Sayu-Sayu's charm is enhanced by her imperfect singing and slightly clumsy dance moves. If she was perfect, she'd be no different from a robot."
Rena glares at me for several seconds, but then she suddenly looks up as if someone had grabbed her arm from behind, only there was no-one there. However, I understand exactly what happened, because I can sense it too. Perhaps drawn by the emotional highs of the concert-goers, a witch is approaching. It's strange… usually I have to actively hunt down witches, but this time, it's coming straight for us.
"I won't forgive you, okay?" Rena snaps.
Then she turns and runs off in the direction of the witch. I look at Riko.
"Should we go too?"
"Well… this one seems kinda strong," Riko says. "I'm not sure if she can handle it by herself?"
"Well then… let's go," I say.
So we take off in pursuit of Rena. Before long, we break free of the crowd, and then, realizing we're following her, she rounds on us.
"Hey, what's your problem? Why the hell are you following me?"
"We're not following you," I reply. "We just happen to be going in the same direction."
She glares at us for a moment longer, then hmmphs and continues on her way. We continue following her, even as she rushes into an alleyway. Then she rounds on us again.
"You can't say you're not following me now!" she shouts.
"I totally can," I say, transforming. Riko follows my example.
Rena gasps. "Ohhh… I get it now… you're both magical girls too!" Then she too transforms, brandishing her trident at us. "But it's not like I need help from the likes of you, so scram!"
"Oh, come on," I say. "It can't hurt for us to at least watch, can it?"
"I don't need spectators! Scram!"
With another huff, she turns and stalks into the labyrinth. I look at Riko.
"Should we follow?"
"Of course!" Riko says resolutely.
So we step into the barrier, and I note with some interest that it seems to be the same barrier, that is, this is another instance of the witch Zenobia. That means some of her familiars had matured into a full-fledged witch. I wonder if either of these is even the original witch? Is the original still at large? I glance at Riko, but she doesn't seem too surprised by the situation, so I decide to bring it up.
"Um… isn't it unusual to see the same witch twice?" I ask.
Riko blinks at me. "What? Is it? I've seen this witch quite a lot, though…"
Huh. Just how many familiars had the original witch spawned? Is that normal?
"This is the first time I've fought the same witch twice," I say. "And I've been a magical girl for about two months now."
"Well, I guess twice in the same day is weird though," Riko admits. "Also, this is the only witch I've fought more than once… every other witch was unique…"
"I see… so it could just be that this one witch was unusually prolific, huh…" I muse.
While we discuss this issue, Rena is ahead of us, alternating between dousing the familiars in water that appears to melt them and slicing them up with her trident.
"Uhh, she might be right," Riko says. "It doesn't look like we're needed here…"
"Well, these are just familiars though," I reply. "Let's wait until we get to the actual witch."
I swing my sword at a stray familiar that got past Rena, cutting it down in a single stroke. We head deeper into the labyrinth, with Rena carving a path and me dealing with a few familiars that manage to avoid death at her blade. Every so often, Riko also fends one off. Soon, we arrive at the doorway to the witch's chamber, and Rena pushes it open and charges in with guns blazing. Um… I mean, she runs forward, charging up her ultimate attack, and lets loose upon the witch.
Mirrors spring up around Zenobia, who seems to have been caught off-guard by Rena's sudden entry. Each mirror is seemingly formed from a sphere of water that's flattened by Rena's magic, although they do also gain a golden frame. The mirrors all show a reflection of Rena herself, only it's not really a true reflection… it's more like the witch's reflection in the mirror is replaced by Rena. Maybe that's not quite right either, because each of the reflections of Rena is looking directly at Zenobia.
"Infinite Poseidon!" Rena shouts.
Then the mirror Renas each brandish their trident at the witch before exploding into bubbles, while the real Rena leaps into the air, thrusting down with her trident and bringing down a veritable tidal wave of water along with her. The water flows outward, and I divert it away from Riko and me with my telekinesis.
Breathing heavily, Rena turns triumphantly to face us.
"See? I told you I didn't need any help!"
Unfortunately, the witch isn't quite dead yet. I summon Teddy Mk II and reach out towards him as if grasping for him as he zooms over Rena's head and stomps on the witch.
"You should make sure she's dead before crowing about it," I retort.
Startled, Rena turns to check. Even after the stomp, the witch is still not quite dead, so Rena stabs it again. Then the barrier begins to collapse, and I power down. Riko follows my example, but Rena turns and thrusts her trident in my face.
"Don't expect me to thank you for that!" she shouts.
"I wasn't expecting it," I reply.
With another hmmph, she snatches up the grief seed and runs off.
"I guess I was worried for nothing," Riko says wistfully. "She really did take care of it by herself…"
"Well, we should get going though," I say. "There's still one more place I'd like to see before I have to get you back to your parents."
After taking another bus north into Hokuyo Ward, I get off and follow the directions I obtained from the Internet, heading into a residential area. Suddenly, I stop to look around, for it feels like I've been here before.
"This… this really is from… Phantom Thief Magical Kirin," I say, my voice hushed in awe. "It looks exactly like that town that first appears in chapter twenty… amazing!"
"Oh wow, you're right!" Riko gasps. "So Kirin's big adventures took place underneath this very neighbourhood!"
"Right, that's exactly it!" I exclaim. "Magical artifact hunters by night! Ordinary teenagers by day! Heck, I only started reading it two months ago, but it's such a great series!"
Well… that's only half true, I suppose. After all, Ashley already had the entire set of released volumes, so she must've started reading it well before me. Still… for me, it really did start two months ago.
"There's the boy who can't leave his mansion because of an illness," Riko reminisces. "But Kirin sneaks him out and they go all around town… I thought my heart would explode, reading that!"
"Ahh, I know what you mean!" I exclaim. "That was a totally cute relationship… I loved how they were close but not that close. It's such a refreshing change from those mangas where the boys and girls just have to be paired up!"
"Huh!?" a new voice pipes in. "C-could it be… are you two Kirinites!?"
Huh? You've got to be kidding me… is she here too? I figured there was no way we'd run into her, not when I showed up two months earlier than the Ashley of the game. And yet, here she is, in the flesh, a girl with light purple hair and star ornaments tying off a small bunch on each side. Her eyes also seem to be a dark shade of purple… that can't be her natural colour, right? I can also see a magical girl ring on her finger, as well as the orange pumpkin mark on one of her fingernails. Hmm… come to think of it, she is a die-hard fan of Kirin, so it's totally possible she just comes here on a regular basis. I guess that would explain how I still managed to run into her.
"U-um… who are you?" Riko asks.
"Sorry for just leaping in," the new girl says. "I just… I heard you talking about Kirin, so… I couldn't help myself…"
"So that means you're a Kirinite too, right?" I say.
"Yes!" she replies. "It's my absolute most favourite series!"
"Yeah, it's great to talk about stuff you're into with other fans, right?" I nod sagely.
"Yeah, I also love talking about Magical Kirin with other fans," Riko nods.
"It almost feels like this meeting was fate," I say. "And I don't even believe in fate… but why don't we all explore this sacred spot and chat about Kirin together? I'm sure it'll be tons of fun!"
"I'm in!" Riko says instantly.
"Um… are you sure?" the newcomer asks.
"What's the problem?" I ask. "Ohh, are you worried because we haven't properly introduced ourselves? I'm Ashley Taylor! And look!" I hold up my hand, indicating the ring. "I have one of these too! You must be a magical girl as well, right?"
"Huh? You're a magical girl?" the girl says. She then looks at Riko, presumably spotting her ring as well, and blinks. "Both of you?"
"That's right!" Riko nods. "I'm Chiaki Riko! Just call me Riko!"
"I'm Misono Karin!" the purple-haired girl says. "It's so nice to meet you guys! You can call me Karin too!"
"Oh, and you can both call me Ashley," I add. "That's what I'm used to anyway."
So, we spend an hour or two just exploring the neighbourhood and marvelling at the many similarities to the setting of the manga. One of the locations even brings the three of us to tears as we remember certain scenes from the manga.
Eventually, I notice it's starting to get late, and we part ways with Karin, but not before exchanging contact info and agreeing to meet again sometime.
"So, what should we do now?" Riko asks.
"I'm feeling hungry…" I muse. "There was this restaurant I wanted to check out, and I think it's not too far from here… do we have time before you need to get back?"
Riko checks the time on her phone and nods.
"Yeah, I think there should be time!" she says.
We follow the main road east for about ten or twenty minutes, until I spot the landmark that I got from Internet. Then I double-check the directions and figure out where to go, eventually ending up in front of a small, modest restaurant called Walnut's. I push the door open. There's almost no-one here, just an old lady at a corner table.
"Hello, welcome to Walnuts… oh, it's you!"
A red-haired girl in a chef's uniform pops out to greet us, only to have a sudden flash of recognition.
"Ah!" Riko gasps. "Um, thank you again for saving me the other day!"
"Ah, that was nothing!" the chef says. "Come in! What can I get for you?"
She ushers us to a table on the opposite side of the restaurant from the old lady.
"Here's our menu. I'm Kurumi Manaka, the chef of this establishment when Dad's away."
We both take the offered menu. Riko only looks briefly at it before ordering.
"I want a rice omelette!"
I two make a quick decision.
"Um, I'll try the napolitan," I say.
"Good choices!" Manaka says. "It'll be just a few minutes! Would you like something to drink in the meantime?"
"A cup of green tea would be nice," I say.
"Can I have strawberry milk?" Riko asks.
"One green tea, one strawberry milk," Manaka nods. "Got it. I'll be right back!"
She heads into the back for a minute or two before returning with our drinks. Then she whisks away before I can even say anything, so I take a sip of my tea instead.
"Did you know this was her shop?" Riko asks me.
"Hmm? Oh… I guess not? I wanted to come here because I heard it was good. That's all there is to it, really."
"Well, I'm glad I ran into her again," Riko says.
After about a ten minute wait, Manaka zooms back out with our food, setting them in front of us.
"Mind if I pull up a chair too?" she asks.
"Go ahead," I nod.
"It's never busy around this time, so when someone around my age comes in, it's always nice to chat a little, you know?" Manaka says.
"I totally understand that," I reply. "I'm Ashley Taylor, a magical girl from California, and… it seems the two of you already know each other, huh?"
Manaka nods. "Yeah, we met after… wait, did you say you're a magical girl?"
I nod. "Yes… oh wow, this pasta's really good!"
"The omelette is really yummy too!" Riko adds.
"As I was saying, we met after she collapsed in a labyrinth," Manaka says. "She seemed to be in a coma, so I lugged her over to the Coordinator's to see if there was something wrong with her… I was really worried, actually."
This leads into a rather detailed account of the event, and I mostly just listen in as I eat. Though the explanation takes awhile, it can pretty much be boiled down to one sentence. After collapsing in the labyrinth, Riko had been affected by the witch's magic, causing her to experience a sort of waking dream where she wandered through an infinite labyrinth.
Once we've finished our meal and I've forked over the cash, we say goodbye to Manaka, and I accompany Riko back to her house before catching a train back to Kamihama. This trip turned out pretty well, I think. The run-in with main character Rena was a bit unexpected though, and I hope it doesn't affect the plot too much. Although in retrospect I totally should've expected it, since I knew she was a fan of Sayu-Sayu. But I've added three new contacts to my phone – Riko, Karin, and Manaka – so that should outweigh any downsides that might come of running into Rena.
It's dark when I get off the train, and as I make my way back to the house I'm staying at, I catch sight of a blonde girl with drill curls passing by on the other side of the street. She seems to spot me and stops, and I swear our eyes meet for a second… but then she turns off down a side street.
There can't be too many girls of her description around here, right? That must have been Tomoe Mami. Did she actually see me, I wonder? Did she notice that I was a magical girl? But there's no use in fretting over it, so after a minute or so I just shrug and continue on my way.
