It's been more than a week since I went to Kamihama, and the news is once again covering a string of mysterious disappearances that have recently begun to plague Mitakihara. It seems that when the police investigate one of these disappearances, they often find signs of a crime scene, but no traces of a body. Because of that, they're tentatively labelling it a serial killer case, but I can tell that they're baffled by the lack of a body. Assuming it's really a serial killer, the culprit must be disposing of the bodies in some perfect way that leaves no traces, yet without bothering to give the same treatment to the crime scenes. The other strange thing is that quite a few of the missing people apparently have ties with the yakuza, although there are just as many with no apparent ties as well.
"Who could be behind all of that?" Komachi wonders, peering over my shoulder at the television. "It's kinda spooky…"
"Well… this is just a wild guess, but… I think it might be a magical girl," I say.
That's a lie. It's not a wild guess – I can think of at least two magical girls who are serial killers. Amano Suzune is one of them, of course, but this doesn't match her work – none of the dead are young girls. That also rules out Kure Kirika, although she probably hasn't even made a contract yet.
"No way! What sort of magical girl would do that?"
"There are all kinds of magical girls," I shrug. "And think about it… if she just lugged the corpse into a labyrinth and left it there, there'd be no trace of it, right?"
"Ahh… you're right…" Komachi says. "Well, what do you think about all this, Kyuubey?"
Apparently Kyuubey was perched on her shoulder for some reason. It responds to her question.
"It is likely," Kyuubey says. "A particularly unusual magical girl has recently arrived in Mitakihara. Other magical girls have taken to calling her the Sleepwalking Spectre."
That monicker seems familiar for some reason. I'm pretty sure she's a character who appears at some point in Magia Record… at least, I remember a minor character who appeared in Momoe Nagisa's first event with a similar name.
"Uhh… what is she like, exactly?" Komachi asks.
"She is a peculiar one," Kyuubey replies. "Although I do not anticipate your life will be endangered, it is best if you avoid her."
It's not often I find the white devil stating that sort of opinion, so I look at it curiously.
"That's not like you, Kyuubey," I say. "Normally you don't try to interfere with what magical girls do, right?"
"There are exceptions," Kyuubey says. "I believe she would be a bad influence on you."
"When you put it that way, I kinda wanna meet her just once," I muse. "But fine, I won't seek her out."
But it seems like I didn't even have to. The next day as I am leaving school with Komachi, a blonde girl wearing a surgical mask accosts us. Mind you, it's not like she singles us out – she seems to be trying to talk to each and every student as they head home. Naturally, most of them blow her off though.
"Hey, do you know this person?" she asks cheerfully once she has our attention. "I can't seem to find them!"
She proffers a list of names and points out a specific name on the list. While Komachi examines the indicated name, I scan the entire list curiously. Unsurprisingly, there isn't really anyone familiar on there, except… towards the bottom I spot the name Momoe Saki. Well, that basically confirms her identity as far as I'm concerned. Looking at her hands, I can also see a ring and fingernail marking, indicating that she is a magical girl. The marking is yellow, in the shape of a noose.
"I don't think I know that person," Komachi says. "Sorry I couldn't be of help."
"Oh, that's not a problem!" the masked girl says. "I'm sure I'll find them eventually. It's not like I'm in a hurry."
"Well, good luck in your search," Komachi says.
And then we just go on our way. I don't think Komachi even noticed that she's a magical girl. The two of us split up soon after, Komachi heading over to meet up with her sister while I make my way to the hospital district for some witch hunting.
Unfortunately, I've only just arrived in the hospital district when I'm accosted by a rather distraught Inui.
"Ashley-chan, Ashley-chan, have you heard?" she gasps, seizing me by the arms. "Did Kyuubey tell you about her?"
"Ah… what are you talking about?" I ask as I delicately extricate myself from her grasp.
"The Sleepwalking Spectre!" Inui says urgently. "He told me a lot about her… I'm worried about Sho-kun…"
Huh? Wait… Kyuubey seemed reluctant to share any info with Komachi and me, yet it told Inui a lot? Why the discrepancy? Could it be… given the state Inui is in, is it possible it's trying to encourage her to become a witch? But it's too soon for that…
"Um… I'm still not sure why you'd be worried about someone like him," I say. "But I think you should have a few weeks before she starts prowling this part of the city."
"He's my boyfriend, of course I'd be worried!" Inui retorts.
But my words seem to calm her down quite a bit, at least. She straightens and twirls a lock of her short teal hair.
"Say Ashley-chan, since you're here, could you help me out a little?"
She transforms her soul gem into gem form and shows it to me. It's about two-thirds darkened… she should still have a lot of magic left in it still, but if she doesn't find a grief seed soon, she'll be in trouble.
"You have extra grief seeds, right? Can I have one?" she asks.
I shake my head. "No, I'm saving those up for when I really need them," I reply. "However… if you join me to fight a witch, I'll let you keep the grief seed."
"Oh, thank you so much, Ashley-chan! You're a life-saver!"
As she seizes my hand and drags me off, I find myself wondering… was she like this in the game? Okay, sure, she was a very minor character, and she only appeared in a single event as far as I can remember, but from my hazy memory of her in that event, I thought she would be more reserved. Instead, she's unabashedly in my face, gushing about her awful boyfriend whenever she has a chance and begging me for favours without a shred of shame. She never even asked whether it was okay to call me Ashley-chan. I haven't bothered to correct her because I don't really mind, but it does irk me just a little that she did it without asking.
It seems she has already sensed a witch and was just looking for some help in bringing it down, for before long I too sense that magical signature. In fact, there's something familiar about it… I think it might be Albertine again? That would make this the second time I've encountered a duplicate witch. Inui drags me into an alleyway and gestures proudly at the portal there.
"I tracked it all by myself!" she says, as if that's some kind of accomplishment.
"Well, that's a start, I suppose…" I mutter.
I guess she already anticipated I'd say no to just giving her a grief seed. At least she has some sense.
"Come on, let's get inside!"
She transforms and hops through the barrier, and I follow her example, brandishing my sword at the living drawings that come to attack us. Her magical girl outfit is blindingly pink, consisting of a frilly pink jumper, short pink cape, pink and white striped knee-high stockings, and a pink bonnet. Most of the items also have teal accents, matching the colour of her hair. She doesn't have a proper weapon, instead wielding a wand with a heart and wings on it, like something out of a classic magical girl anime. I suppose it could serve as a bludgeoning weapon in a pinch?
Inui immediately starts to throw her pink flames in all directions, toasting the first wave of familiars. I then jump in front and slice up the next wave with my sword.
"You're so strong, Ashley-chan!" she says. "I'm so glad I can rely on you!"
Now, if you could ask someone before relying on them, that would be even better… but whatever. For all her words and her distaste for hunting, Inui actually is fairly strong as a magical girl. I don't think she'd measure up to veterans like Mami or Kyouko or Sarra, but she's also not like Hiyori or Nisha whose powers are very ill-suited to fighting. With the two of us working together, we carve a path straight through the waves of familiars and, far sooner than I expected, we reach the door to the witch's chamber.
As I thought, it's Albertine again. I smash the door down and step into the playroom, where I'm immediately met by a volley of runic blocks. I smack them aside with a mix of sword swings and telekinesis as I venture further into the room.
"She's kinda cute, you know," Inui says wistfully.
"Well, she may be cute but she'll eat you alive if she can," I retort.
I hold out my hand, and she presses hers against mine. This is the second time we've fought together, so she's already familiar with my connect ability, but to my surprise, this time she connects with me, funnelling her power into me before I even get the chance to do the same for her. Could she actually be some sort of magical genius or something!? Still, even if she is, her personality is still terrible… she sticks her tongue out at me before looking back at the witch and flinging some globs of flame.
With my sword now wreathed in Inui's pink flames, I leap towards Albertine and slash downwards at her. She raises her hands to defend herself, but my sword slices clean through them, leaving her with two severed stumps. However, it doesn't go any further than that, stopping short on her skull, as if it were made of steel or something.
Then she bursts into tears, and the sheer force of those tears forces me backwards, though I brace myself as best I can against the various toys littering the ground. This also seems to have the effect of regenerating her severed hands.
"No!" Inui shouts. "Don't cry! Look at me! I'll comfort you!"
And just like that, the witch stops bawling and looks at Inui. This is Inui's charm power. Unlike me, she seems to be able to call upon it at will, whenever she wants. I imagine I should be able to do that as well, I just haven't figured out how yet… but that's beside the point. I slap Inui's hand, performing the connect I intended to do earlier, and then leap forward to attack the witch again.
After several swings that tear through her legs and dress, the witch suddenly raises one fist and brings it down on my head. I barely dodge it, and I'm preparing for a second strike from her other fist when a blast from Inui's flame hits Albertine in her chest, stopping her in her tracks once more. Right… of course, that flame was also enhanced with my charm.
As I raise my sword to resume my attack, Inui unexpectedly joins me on the front line, gripping her wand and swinging it. With a rope of flame extending out from the heart, it's like she's wielding a whip. Perhaps I was a little too quick to judge her weapon as useless, for it seems like she's found a way to put it to use in melee. Between her flame whip and my Kensei, it looks like we're about to finish her off.
But then, it rarely goes as you'd expect, right? Suddenly, Albertine seems to sense that she's about to lose, and retreats by diving into a nearby building block.
"Aww, where'd she go?" Inui complains.
"She's hiding," I say. "I've fought this witch once before… to get her to come out, I think we have to smash everything. Or at least, that's what I did last time."
Inui looks surprise. "Huh? You can defeat the same witch more than once? Do they come back to life or something?"
"They can if you don't give Kyuubey the grief seed to safely dispose of it once it's completely dark," I reply. "But also, if left long enough, their familiars can mature into a copy of the original witch. Didn't Kyuubey tell you that?"
"Uhh… he might have mentioned it?" Inui admitted. "I wasn't paying much attention to be honest…"
As I talk, I set about slashing at anything in sight that seems like it could be hiding the witch. From the noise behind me, it's clear that Inui is doing the same with her flame whip. With two of us smashing things, it feels like no time at all before Albertine finally tumbles out from one of the building blocks. She immediately bursts into tears, the pressure forcing us back once more.
"Don't cry! Let me comfort you!" Inui calls out again.
And just like that, the witch stops bawling. That power is so convenient! With just a few words, she can stop the enemy in its tracks, whereas I need to charge up my ultimate attack to get a similar effect. Speaking of which… as Inui has decided to take the lead this time in attacking with her flame whip, I decide to summon Teddy Mk II and charge up the aforementioned attack. The Teddy Drones spin and spin in front of me, building up a charge, until…
"Now!" Inui shouts, hopping to the side.
The charm has worn off by this time, and Albertine has one hand raised into the air, which she smashes down upon the location Inui just vacated. Then I let loose with my glitter beam. I'm fully expecting that to finish her off, but… it seems this iteration of Albertine is a lot more resilient than the one I fought before. As the glitter clears, she picks herself up and dusts herself off in confusion. I look around and spot Inui collapsed on the ground in exhaustion. She must be almost out of magic.
"Ugh, I can't do any more!" she groans, confirming my suspicion. "Ashley-chan… please avenge me…"
I'm about to charge in with my sword when a new voice calls out from behind me.
"TIRO FINALE!"
I gape as Albertine's left shoulder and arm are blown away by a cannon blast. The witch looks around in confusion, scratching her head with her remaining hand, but then it's like the damage just catches up to her, and she disintegrates. I turn to look at the culprit, the drill-haired girl I spotted on patrol on my way back from Kamihama – none other than Tomoe Mami herself. Ignoring me, she runs over to retrieve the grief seed and hurries over to check on Inui.
"You're the new magical girl around here, right?" she asks. "Are you okay?"
I watch her press the grief seed against Inui's corrupted soul gem, purifying it, and Inui sits up… but instead of looking relieved or grateful, she glares at Mami.
"I didn't need your help," she retorts. "Ashley-chan and I had it under control. We were just about to finish it off."
"Is that so?" Mami says, bowing apologetically. "Well, then allow me to apologize for intruding. You can keep the grief seed."
"Yeah…"
"Regardless of what Miss Inui says," I speak up. "I can't say the fight was going that well. I could've finished it off on my own, but I'm not sure if Miss Inui would've lasted that long, so… thanks for your help."
Mami turns to me with a bow of greeting. "Kyuubey told me about you too… the magical girl exchange student at Mitakihara High School, right? I'm Tomoe Mami. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"The pleasure is mine," I reply. "I'm Ashley Taylor. Like you said, I'm an exchange student at Mitakihara High."
Mami smiles. "I see that you have chosen hunting grounds quite far from your school."
I shrug. "Kyuubey suggested that I help Miss Inui out since she was new. Miss Inui also asked for my help herself. And there aren't enough witches around Mitakihara High to support five magical girls anyway."
Mami looks a little sad. "It is unfortunate that so many magical girls think that way… if they would just work together…" Then she calms her face and smiles again. "Forgive me for the tangent… I will leave the two of you in peace now."
The barrier has already collapsed by this time, and she powers down and leaves the alleyway. Inui, who has also powered down while I was talking to Mami, glares after her. I follow their example and power down as well.
"She's such a snob," Inui grumbles. "I don't like her one bit."
"She didn't seem all that snobbish to me, but if you say so," I shrug.
"Argh, I wanna see Sho-kun!" Inui groans. "I wanna see him so badly! But he's out of town until next Tuesday…"
"Well, guess you've just gotta be patient and wait," I say.
"Alright, it's decided," Inui says, smacking a fist into her palm. "I'll treat myself to six parfaits to take my mind off Sho-kun. You should come too, Ashley-chan! It'll be my treat!"
I tilt my head slightly. "Just checking, but… do you have enough money for seven parfaits?"
"Huh? You only want one?" Inui says. "Well… I'm not too sure if I have enough actually… I lent some to Sho-kun a couple days ago. But I should definitely have enough for three or four!"
"Well… if you insist, I'll accept," I sigh.
At least it's better for her to spend that money on ice cream than to give it to a man who'll probably never pay her back. She had shown me a photo of this Sho-kun last time, and my reaction was like… what a thug! He wasn't even smiling! A thuggish look would be fine if he actually enjoyed being around her, but it was clear on his face that he was just humouring her for that photo… and she just can't see it. He also looks like he's nearly twice her age.
Inui leads the way to an ice cream shop and, after counting her money, orders four different flavours of parfait. Once they're served, I select the white chocolate and black cherry parfait and start digging in. Thankfully, she's too engrossed in eating to start gushing about Sho-kun. After I've finished my parfait, she's just getting started on her third, so I take my leave.
"See you later, Ashley-chan!" she calls as I leave the shop.
It's beginning to get dark, so I hurry back to the high school district, but as I draw near the school, something intrudes on my mind.
«Anyone, if you can hear me! Please help!»
It's… Hiyori's voice? Are the four of them in trouble? I try sending a response via telepathy.
«Hello, Ashley here… what's going on, Hiyori?»
It seems that it got through, for Hiyori immediately responds.
«Oh, Ashley, I'm so glad to hear your voice!» she says. «Please, come quick! We're behind the high school, about a block away. Hurry!»
«Um… alright, I'll be there as soon as I can,» I say. «Is it a witch?»
«Well… yes and no,» Hiyori says. «It's easier if you just come and see for yourself!»
I hurry towards the school, searching for traces of magic as I go. As I pass by the school, I sense the witch and adjust my direction. Before long I locate the portal and jump into the barrier, transforming on the run. It's like stepping into a kaleidoscope, with inscrutable visions seen through blurred glass in all directions. The visions attack me with shards of glass, but I smash them to pieces with a single swing of my sword. I guess these are the familiars, but they're far weaker than the ones in Stacey's labyrinth, the first witch I ever fought. I make short work of them and race forward towards the witch's chamber. For once, I ignore the runes spelling out the witch's name and leap into her chamber without looking.
The scene before my eyes is… rather different from what I was expecting. I thought they were just having trouble with a witch that turned out to be stronger than expected, but while they are fighting a witch, it doesn't seem like she's the issue here. Indeed, given how weak the familiars were, it would be strange if the witch was all that much stronger.
The chamber itself has the look of a bedroom, but filled with mirrors on all sides. The witch appears to be a spectre within those mirrors, popping out of the mirrors to attack with something that looks like purple lasers, as well as clawed hands if you get too close to the mirror.
But instead of grouping up to attack the witch, Komachi and Claire appear to be defending it. Elise stands near the entrance, watching, with Hiyori clinging to her and shivering in fear.
As to what they could possibly be defending a witch against… my eyes slide past the two melee fighters to the bizarre, tall figure in front of them. It takes me a moment to realize that this is another magical girl. Her costume is strange, reminding me of a clown more than anything else. Her entire head is covered in a white mask, bearing stitches along the forehead and at mouth level, the latter giving her a creepy wide-mouthed look, like an eternal grin. Additionally, a golden horn juts out from her forehead just below the stitching, with a medallion at its base bearing her soul gem. Below that, a massive stiff yellow collar dominates the view, ringed in white fur. The core of her outfit is… what do I even call it? A leotard? A jumpsuit? I can't quite tell if that's shorts or a miniskirt? I guess I can think of it as a leotard with a miniskirt. It's actually the most normal part of her outfit, if you ignore the white and yellow diamond-patterned colour scheme. Finally, underneath all that, she wears orange fur pants. She also appears to have a pair of lion-like tails, each bearing three tiny yellow bows. She grips a stiletto in each hand in a reverse grip, blades pointing downwards.
"Hey, hey," the unknown girl says reasonably. "I don't see what you're getting all worked up about. That's a witch, so I've got to kill it. It's just how this works."
"And I told you, I won't let you steal our kill!" Komachi shouts. "This is our witch! You can't have it!"
She leaps forward with her naginata, but her target nimbly dodges the attack.
"But you didn't seem to be doing too well against it," the strange girl says. "Wouldn't it be more rational to leave this one to me and go fight a weaker one?"
"That's irrelevant," Claire states. "This is our territory, therefore any witch here is ours. Even if it's too strong for us, we'll whittle it down slowly!"
"And anyway, we were doing just fine!" Komachi retorts.
"Geez, I really don't get you," the yellow girl grumbles. "If you'd just let me finish off that witch, we could all be on our way. Oh! Is this about the grief seed? You can have the grief seed if you want. I don't need any grief seeds."
Claire and Komachi attack the girl in tandem, but she somersaults backwards and easily dodges. The witch coincidentally chooses the same moment to attack, but the new girl dodges the laser beam as well, somehow.
"Yikes! Watch it! You could hurt someone with those things!" she exclaims.
"That's the whole point!" Komachi retorts.
"Why the hell are you fighting if you don't need grief seeds?" Elise asks from the wings.
"I don't understand the question?" the strange girl says. "I'm a magical girl. I fight witches. It's just the way of things. What does a grief seed have to do with it?"
"Okay, this is getting stupid," I announce.
"Oh look! Another magical girl has arrived! Please, can you talk some sense into these girls?"
"You're the one Kyuubey called the Sleepwalking Spectre, right?" I ask.
"Oh! Yes, I forgot to introduce myself! My name is Yu… just Yu. I don't really remember the rest of my name."
"Well, if you ask me, you're the one in the wrong here, Yu," I say. "So why don't you just give up and leave?"
"Oh, come on, not you too!" Yu groans. "I can't just leave as a magical girl when there's a witch right in front of me!"
I sigh. This one is really difficult to deal with, seriously. She just doesn't listen. No, it's more like she can't listen. She's literally incapable of imagining someone else's point of view, or empathizing with it.
"Well, how about this?" I say. "Elise, you four can beat this witch, right?"
"Yes, of course!" Elise nods. "If it weren't for this… this stupid spectre getting in our way, we would've won long ago!"
"Then stop fighting Yu and start fighting the damn witch!" I say.
"R-right!"
I draw my sword and step in front of Komachi and Claire.
"I'll take over here," I say. "You take that witch down, okay?'
"Right! I got it!" Komachi says.
"Very well," Claire says.
"I really don't get you guys," Yu says. "It just doesn't make any sense! Why are all magical girls so illogical?"
I brandish my sword. "It's because we need grief seeds to survive."
"Well yes, but I said they could keep the grief seed, didn't I?" Yu says reasonably. "I don't need grief seeds very often, so I'm happy to let them keep it. I don't see what the problem is here."
I attack with my sword a few times, testing Yu's reactions. She seems to anticipate my every move, dodging with ease no matter what I try. I wonder what her power is. Is she just fast? Does she just have amazing reaction time? Or can she see what I'm going to do before I do it?
"Look, none of us care whether you understand," I reply. "We just want you to listen. You're not listening. Everything you say is true, but it doesn't matter. This territory belongs to these four girls. If they say you can't hunt here? Then just don't. It's that simple. It doesn't have to make sense to you."
I can't really see what the others are up to with my eyes fixed on Yu, but I can hear the sound of broken glass. Perhaps they're breaking the mirrors to limit the witch's attack vectors. Of course, all my words are wasted on Yu. I don't know why I'm even bothering to try…
"Ah, I just don't get it," Yu complains. "Why can't you just be happy for the help? Wouldn't it be easier to fight with five people than with four?"
"Actually… no, it's not easier," I say. "It depends on who that fifth person is. If it's someone they know, then yeah, it might be easier, but when it's a stranger like you, it can actually make the battle harder."
"Oh! So you're saying I need to get to know them more first?" Yu says. "Ah, but I don't think I can do that… I don't know the first thing about socializing."
I slash at her again, and this time she tries blocking it with her stiletto. It only holds for a second though before my sword slices right through her weapon, and she hops back to avoid it. She then tosses the broken stiletto aside and summons a new one.
"I don't see what's so hard about just fighting your witches elsewhere," I say. "It's a big city, surely you can find an area where no-one will complain about you killing witches."
"Well, I dunno about that," Yu says. "It's not like I was looking for witches. I was just walking by and there it was!"
"You could at least let them fight it by themselves if they say they don't want your help," I say. "All you need to do to fulfill your role as a magical girl is to make sure the witch ends up dead, right? If that means watching someone else kill her, isn't that good enough?"
"It's not really the same," Yu says.
"You really have some problems, don't you," I sigh.
"Everyone I meet seems to say that, but I just don't get it," Yu says. "All I want to do is kill witches and bad people. What's so wrong about that?"
At that moment, the barrier begins to collapse, indicating the witch has been defeated.
"Well, I guess there's no point in hanging around now," Yu says.
She powers down, showing herself to be the same masked girl we saw after school. Well, it was already obvious just from her voice and demeanour, but still.
"I suppose I'll see you next time," Yu says.
She turns and runs off.
"And don't come back!" Elise shouts after her.
"Thanks for the save, Ashley-chan," Hiyori says. "I was scared… she looks so creepy and talks so reasonably, but nothing she says makes any sense…"
"I think you probably don't need to worry about her," I say. "I mean, you don't need to be scared of her. She won't hurt you or anything. You heard what she said, right? She only targets witches and bad people, and I doubt any of you could count as a bad person. Of course, you should still watch out for her stealing your kills, I guess."
"I hope we don't see her again," Elise mutters. "I hate her so much!"
"Well… I have a feeling you will be seeing her a few more times… so you'll have to make the best of it," I say.
"Ugh," Elise grumbles.
"Well, at least we did get the grief seed in the end," Komachi says. "Here, let me heal everyone…"
Once she has applied healing to the four of them and used the grief seed on their soul gems, we all power down and head back home. Elise and Claire split off early of course, since they live separately.
But wow… that Yu sure is intense. I already had some inkling of what she was like from Magia Record, but to experience it first-hand is a completely different thing. I just hope I don't have to fight her… but that'll be asking too much, won't it? Maybe if I could get Oriko to help me… yeah, that seems like it could work. I've no idea if she'd be willing, though.
