As Komachi and I leave school on Tuesday, Kyuubey accosts us.

"I have information that you may be interested in," it says. "Especially you, Ashley Taylor."

"Oh? What's this about?" I ask.

"There is evidence that Walpurgisnacht will come to this city," it says.

Komachi gasps. "S-seriously!? Here, to Mitakihara? B-but how could you possibly know this?"

"I am still unsure about the reliability of the source, but considering the past appearances of the witch, the information seems plausible," Kyuubey says.

"Okay… so tell us the source so we can judge for ourselves," I say.

"Understood. Recently, I made a contract with a magical girl named Mikuni Oriko. She claims to have received the power of foresight, and told me that she saw Walpurgisnacht in a vision. According to Oriko, it will arrive in Mitakihara approximately six weeks from now. She was unable to give an exact date."

"Oh… is that possible?" Komachi asks. "Seeing the future with magic?"

"Apparently anything is possible with a wish, so… yeah, I think it seems believable," I say. "Are you telling anyone else about this?"

"One way or another, I intend to relay the information to every magical girl in Mitakihara," Kyuubey says.

"What about Kazamino?" I point out. "It's pretty close by, so if it hits Mitakihara, I'm sure Kazamino will suffer too."

"You make a good point," Kyuubey agrees. "I will be sure to tell Sakura Kyouko about it as well."

"Huh? What about Lina-kun's gang?" Komachi asks.

"Are you referring to Hitomi Lina?" Kyuubey asks. "It seems that she and her friends were recently killed in a conflict between magical girls."

Komachi gasps, and I blink in surprise.

"Huh? Who were the aggressors?" I ask. "And um… how long ago was this?"

"A magical girl named Yuuki Sasa," Kyuubey responds. "It happened two days ago."

"And… do you know where Miss Yuuki is now?"

"When I last checked in on her, she had decided to transfer to Shirome Middle School," Kyuubey says. "It is likely that she is now targeting magical girls in this city."

"Oh… I see…"

"Well, Miss Asako and Miss Mikuni both attend that school, right?" Komachi says. "I bet they'll be fine."

"Huh? How did you know Miss Mikuni went there?" I asks.

"Well… it was just a guess," Komachi admits. "The Mikuni name is well-known around here, so I just figured it made sense that she'd be attending the school for rich kids…"

"Ah… I see, that makes sense."

"But… I can't believe Lina-kun's gang was wiped out by a single magical girl," Komachi muses. "Is she perhaps really strong? Maybe Miss Asako will be in trouble…"

"I am afraid I do not know details of how they died," Kyuubey says. "But it is unfortunate that I was unable to harvest any energy from them."

"So they didn't turn into witches," I say.

"Huh? How do you know?" Komachi blinks.

"Because Kyuubey harvests energy when a magical girl turns into a witch," I explain. "If it couldn't harvest any, that means they didn't become a witch."

"Ohhh… well, that's a relief then," Komachi says. "But… what does he need with all that energy?"

"It is needed to stave off the heat death of the universe," Kyuubey explains.

Komachi gapes at it.

"Are you stupid? That's billions… maybe even trillions of years in the future!"

"If we do not start early, it will be too late," it responds placidly.

"Don't even bother arguing with the white devil," I say. "It can't understand our way of thinking, and it doesn't even want to."

"Fine… but I really get why you call him a white devil now," Komachi sighs. "He really is a devil, isn't he? Just like Mephistopheles."

I grin at her reference, because from what I understand, that was actually part of the inspiration for the Madoka franchise.

"Yup, you hit the nail right on the head. It's a living Mephisto."

Kyuubey tilts its head.

"I do not understand your comparison of me with a fictional character from a sixteenth-century German writer," it says.

"Of course you wouldn't, you unfeeling alien monster," I shoot back. "Now please leave us alone, otherwise I might lose control and smush you. Oh, but thanks for the warning about Walpurgisnacht."

"Very well," Kyuubey says.

And without any further comment, it runs off and disappears around a corner. I consider the new information. I've learned that Yuuki Sasa attacked and defeated Hitomi Lina and her friends on the twentieth, which should help if I want to save them in a later loop. I don't know exactly when Oriko or Sasa made their contract, but that probably doesn't matter. Based on the plot of the Oriko Magica manga though, I'm almost certain that Oriko made hers later than Madoka did, because that could explain why the manga depicted her as foreseeing Madoka's witch form rather than Walpurgisnacht. As for Sasa, I would surmise that she attacked Lina not too long after she made her contract, so most likely she too contracted later than the sixteenth. If that's true, it means I might even be able to prevent Sasa's contract in a later loop. On the other hand, it's also possible that she lay low for awhile before attacking Lina, or that she arrived from out of town, both of which would mean her contract is already sealed. I guess it doesn't matter either way, though.

"This comes as a huge shock, though," Komachi sighs. "It's not like we were close to Lina-kun's gang or anything, but we met a few times and talked a little and they seemed like nice people… and now a new magical girl just killed them for no reason? That's what… ten magical girls killed in just four days? And Walpurgisnacht coming here… it's so scary, do you think we'll be okay?"

"Honestly? No, I doubt we'll be okay," I say. "But I think we can survive it. I promise you I'll do everything in my power to make sure we survive it."

Komachi nods. "That… that makes me feel a little better… since I know how strong you are…" She sighs. "So anyway, let's hurry and pick up Hiyori so we can hunt some witches."

"Agreed. I'd like to gather a few more grief seeds."

March twenty-third. Asako Komaki exits the front gate of Shirome Middle School at a run, no doubt on her way to hunt witches. A few minutes later, a tall girl with ash blonde hair in a massive side tail exits at a more sedate pace. She is accompanied by a girl with short brown hair who's about a head shorter.

"I can't believe Miss Asako said that to you, Oriko-chan!" the short girl complains. "And everyone else agrees with her when you're not around. I just can't stand it! Isn't it weird how their attitudes changed so fast?"

"I'm grateful you think that way, Sasa-chan," Oriko replies. "But it really doesn't affect me. And at least Miss Asako has the decorum to say it to my face, instead of gossiping behind my back."

"Even if it doesn't affect you, it's just not right," Sasa replies. "I did wonder what on earth you meant by nighttime extracurriculars, though?"

"Oh, that? Nothing in particular," Oriko says. "It was just a little jibe to get her off my back."

They walk together to Oriko's house, chatting about school stuff most of the way, and Oriko brews some tea, setting out three cups.

"Oriko-chan, is something bothering you?" Sasa says. "It's only the two of us living here, you know that! And you seemed worried the whole way back…"

"It's nothing worthy of your time, Sasa-chan," Oriko replies.

"You can share it with me!" Sasa says, jumping to her feet. "Whatever it is, I'll help you with it all the way!"

"Thank you, but it's really nothing," Oriko says.

She checks her phone for messages, then settles down to enjoy the tea while Sasa sits back down and pouts.

"I wish you'd rely on me more, Oriko-chan… after all, we're friends!"

Suddenly, Oriko's eyes lose focus for a moment and even glow slightly, and then she stands.

"Sorry… I just remembered something I forgot to do," she says. "Please excuse me."

She heads for the door and puts her shoes on, and Sasa jumps up to join her.

"I'll come with you, Oriko-chan!"

"It's really not necessary," Oriko says. "But if you insist, I would welcome the company, Sasa-chan."

The two of them head out, with Sasa trying to guess at her errand. Oriko heads through the nearby shopping district without stopping, then enters a small park next to a residential district. There they find a small child crying on a bench, her short black hair tied into twin bunches with green scrunchies. She looks to be around ten or eleven years old, and it seems she's crying because she's hurt.

"Oh? What's wrong, child?" Oriko asks, bending down to look at her.

The girl looks up. "Yuma was a bad girl," she sobs. "Yuma doesn't know what Yuma did, but it must have been something bad, because Mommy hit Yuma again."

"So your name is Yuma-chan," Oriko says. "I'm Oriko."

"Oriko…neesan?" Yuma ventures.

"Yes, exactly," Oriko says.

She looks back at Sasa. "Sasa-chan, we should–"

But just then, a new girl comes out of nowhere to land a flying kick on Sasa. The new girl has short black hair and wears a different uniform, that of Mitakihara Middle School. Oriko blinks in surprise as Sasa is thrown to the ground, sliding a good twenty feet from the blow and slamming into a tree.

"A-are you okay, Sasa… no, wait… just who are you, Sasa?"

"Dammit!" Sasa screeches, picking herself up, seemingly unhurt by the blow. "You just had to go and ruin my magic, you damn cockroach!"

With that, she transforms, donning an outfit a lot like Elise's. The main differences are that she has a coat instead of a cape, with tassels on the tips of her hat and also the tails of her coat, and there's a bow on top of her hat. She also holds that sort of hooked staff that's typical of fantasy mages. The newcomer also transforms at the same time, donning an outfit that gives off the general impression of a maid outfit. However, instead of a skirt, there's only tight-fitting shorts, and the part that resembles an apron is just part of her shirt. It kinda looks like someone started to put on a maid outfit but just stopped halfway and gave up.

"Kirika… so you were okay!" Oriko says in relief. "I was so worried! Do you know this girl?"

"She tried to kill me!" Kirika shouts. "I'll get you back for that, you little creeper!"

"Huh? Is she strong?" Oriko asks.

"She's weak as hell!" Kirika snaps. "The problem isn't her, but… here it comes! Look out!"

Suddenly, a witch's barrier springs up, and Oriko pauses to look back at Yuma, who is watching the whole thing in fear.

"Yuma-chan, find a place to hide," she instructs. "Don't let any strange creatures see you!"

"O-okay, Oriko-neesan…"

Then Oriko transforms as well, clad in a white robe with matching cape and cap, and summons her weapons, a group of five or so orbs that just float next to her.

There are at least four different witches in this barrier, a highly unusual situation to say the least, and one of them goes after Oriko while the others attack Kirika. Sasa laughs maniacally.

"I bet you never thought it was possible, did you! A magical girl who controls witches! Does it scare you? Maybe I'll be lenient if you apologize! Of course, you're gonna die either way!"

Kirika darts between the two witches attacking her, slashing at them in turn with her massive claw weapons. She's faster than them by far, and none of their attacks seem to be able to hit them. As witches go, these ones seem to be on the weaker side.

"Don't your pet witches hurt the humans?" Kirika shouts.

"Oh, my dear Miss Kirika, you've forgotten the first rule of magical girls!" Sasa says with a giggle. "Our purpose is to defeat witches! So who cares what happens to any stupid humans!"

"You steaming pile of garbage!" Kirika shouts.

Ignoring the witches, Kirika suddenly makes a beeline for Sasa herself. The witches try in vain to stop her, and she lands a flying kick to Sasa's stomach before spinning around and pressing her claw blades to the other girl's throat.

"That was a piece of cake!" Kirika says. "Didn't I say you're weak as hell? Now call off your witches or you'll lose that pretty head of yours!"

Sasa growls for a moment, but then suddenly goes into a kowtow, grovelling on the ground.

"I beg your forgiveness!" Sasa says desperately.

"E-eh?" Kirika says, jumping back in surprise.

"I give up! I'll leave Mitakihara, just please let me live! Don't kill me, please? I don't wanna die…"

"W-well, if Oriko's okay with it," Kirika says hesitantly.

But then one of the witches sneaks up behind her and grabs her, lifting her up into the air and dangling her upside down. Sasa bursts out laughing.

"What a joke! I can't believe you fell for such an old trick!" she gloats. "You're such a stupid softie, aren't you?"

"Hey, you piece of trash!" Kirika shouts. "Why don't you fight me for real?"

"How dare you take that tone with me!" Sasa shouts. "You and Oriko are at my mercy now! I did my research on her, you know! Oriko's magic is total trash, after all! Like me, she has no combat abilities at all! She won't last long! But if you ask be very nicely, maaaybe I'll let her go, just this once."

"Who the hell did you just call trash!?" Kirika shouts. "I'll never forgive you for insulting Oriko like that!"

"Huuuh? Can't you see who's in charge here?" Sasa says. "You're all trussed up and can't do anything."

But just at that moment, a blindingly bright laser beam cuts through the witch restraining her, killing it in a single blow, and just like a cat, Kirika flips in midair and lands on her feet.

"Oriko! Thanks a bunch!" Kirika says.

"O-oriko!?" Sasa gasps. "B-but… how!? D-dammit, my witches… get her!"

The one remaining witch moves towards Oriko, but she doesn't move from her position, instead drawing her bevy of orbs together into formation.

"Oracle Ray!" Oriko shouts.

The witch is brought down by the same blindingly bright beam that defeated the previous one, and almost immediately, the barrier starts to collapse.

"N-no way!" Sasa gasps.

"You made a big mistake," Kirika says. "Oriko isn't weak. She just uses up her magic power too quickly on her premonitions, so there's none left to fight with!"

"S-so where's she getting all that power from now!?" Sasa screams.

"Oh my," Oriko says with a smile. "Why, I received it from you, Miss Sasa!"

She shows off a handful of three grief seeds, and Sasa blinks.

"M-my… my witches' grief seeds!?"

Sasa looks around wildly for an escape route, and her eyes fall on Yuma, who immediately darts back into her hiding place. But before Sasa can make a move, Oriko and Kirika between them cut off her access to the girl.

"Well now," Oriko says. "You are guilty of attempted murder… I wonder, how shall we punish you? Naturally I don't expect any excuses from one who uses her own colleagues like toys…"

"Huh? What do you mean, my colleagues?" Sasa says.

"Oh my, didn't you know?" Oriko says. "Witches are born from magical girls."

"Y-you're kidding me, right?" Sasa says. "Y-you've gotta be kidding me…"

Oriko closes her eyes. "I do not jest, Miss Sasa," she says. "If you did your research on me, surely you should know that. I have seen it myself in my premonitions."

"N-no!" Sasa gasps, panicking. "Not that! I don't want to become a witch! A-anything but that! I won't become a witch! I swear I won't!"

She grabs her soul gem from her hat and crushes it in her fist. Of course, immediately afterward she falls backwards, dead, her transformation dispelled. Yuma lets out a frightened shriek as Sasa falls over. Then Oriko and Kirika power down, and Kirika puts her hands on her hips and turns to gaze down at Yuma.

"Hey, kid, you better not tell anyone about this," Kirika says. "Not that anyone'd believe you if you did…"

"Y-yuma will keep your secret, Oriko-neesan," Yuma mutters.

"It seems that Yuuki Sasa underestimated the two of you," Kyuubey says, showing up out of nowhere as usual. "But even so… there was no reason to kill her."

"I didn't kill her," Oriko replies. "She killed herself."

"I see," Kyuubey says. Then it looks at Yuma. "And you might you be?"

"Y-yuma…"

"Yuma? Nice to meet you. I am Kyuubey. Do you have a wish you'd like granted?"

"E-eh? Any wish?" Yuma asks.

"Yes, any wish," Kyuubey says. "Would you like to make a contract with me and be–"

But then Oriko blasts it to pieces with her magic.

"That's enough from you, incubator."

"Oriko-neesan… Yuma won't tell anyone," Yuma says. "No-one at all."

"Yuma-chan… you actually are a good girl," Oriko says. "But something needs to change in your home, or you'll die. Think about it. If you don't say anything, nothing will change."

Suddenly, Yuma just bursts into tears. This seems to send Kirika into a panic of indecision, while Oriko simply kneels beside the child and listens.

"Yuma just doesn't get it!" she wails. "Yuma never did anything wrong! So why does she get mad? Why does she hit Yuma! Yuma just doesn't get it!" She pauses for breath before continuing. "Yuma hates Mommy! Yuma hates Daddy too! It's Daddy's fault that Mommy's mad all the time! And everyone else pretends they don't know!" Again, she pauses for breath. "Why is it always Yuma who has to suffer? It's not fair! It's always Yuma! Everyone picks on Yuma! Everyone's so scary! Yuma hates everyone! Yuma hates herself too! It's just not fair!"

Oriko kneels to pat Yuma on the head.

"Don't forget," she says. "It might hurt to speak about these things, but… something will change. You don't have to try and be a good girl all the time. You're only human… that's enough. You should become the person you want to be."

"Oriko-neesan…" Yuma sobs. "Yuma doesn't really get it… but Yuma will try her best!"

"Yeah, that's enough," Oriko says. "Do your best, Yuma-chan!"

"Y-yeah…"

"Exploring again?"

I open my eyes to see Komachi leaning down to look at my face. Hiyori hovers just a little behind her as well. Then Komachi thrusts an ice cream cone into my hand. It's a single scoop of chocolate.

"O-oh… thanks," I say, accepting it and giving it a few licks. "Yeah… I'm just gathering information. If we want to win against Walpurgisnacht, information could be important."

"What kind of information?" Komachi asks.

"For example, on the abilities of local magical girls," I say.

"Couldn't you just ask them?" Hiyori says. "It seems a bit creepy to be spying on them like this…"

Well, yeah, it does feel a bit weird to be spying on everyone like this, but… it's also more efficient than running around all over the place.

"Well… you have a point," I admit. "I'll have to do that too, anyway…"

"So… what did you see this time?" Komachi asks. "I hope it wasn't someone dying again…"

"Well, actually… yes," I say. "This time it was Yuuki Sasa."

"Oh!" Komachi gasps. "Isn't She the one who killed Lina-kun's team? That was fast! Who did it?"

"She killed herself, actually," I reply. "After losing to Oriko and her partner."

"Huh… Mikuni Oriko has a partner?" Komachi says. "That's kinda surprising…"

"Actually, she goes to your school, Hiyori-chan. Her name is Kirika, I think?"

Hiyori blinks. "C-could you mean Kure Kirika? I've seen her in the office a number of times being scolded for her poor attendance… Since when was she a magical girl?"

"Yeah, that must be her," I nod. "Probably hasn't been one for long. No idea how long, though."

"So, are we going witch-hunting again today, or do you have more exploring to do?" Komachi asks.

"I guess we'd better hunt at least one witch," I agree. "I do still have two left, though, so we could put it off until tomorrow."

"I've got one on me, but it's probably only good for one more use," Komachi says. "We should probably get more."

"Okay then. Let's go."

March twenty-fourth. Mikuni Oriko exits the front gates of Shirome Middle School, seemingly lost in thought. On her way home, she inexplicably turns down a side street and wanders into a witch's barrier. Suddenly she notices.

"Huh!? Oh no!" she exclaims out loud. "I've made quite a mistake as a magical girl… to think I'd actually blunder into a witch's labyrinth…"

But before she can transform, an explosion is heard not far away.

"Eh? What is this?" she wonders, looking back towards it. Then her eyes glow for a moment. "Something… is coming…"

And sure enough, Asako Komaki charges in out of nowhere and smacks down the witch with her battle axe, defeating her in a single hit. Oriko just sort of stares for several seconds before finally vocalizing.

"Eh? Miss Komaki?"

"The hell happened to you?" Komaki demands as the barrier begins to collapse. "Were you spacing out again? It really ticks me off!"

"Well… yes, I am afraid that I was spacing out," Oriko nods.

"So you're an idiot, right!? You're nothing but a huge idiot! What would you have done if I hadn't happened by? You big idiot!"

"W-well… I would have…"

But she doesn't let Oriko finish her sentence. "It's all your fault getting mixed up in this, because of that gloomy face of yours! Don't be such an idiot, you idiot!"

Oriko just lets out a sigh, so Komaki decides to keep talking, leaning against the wall. Kyuubey appears too, hopping up onto Komaki's shoulder.

"So that thing's called a witch," she explains. "They're a real pain in the neck! They're super-violent and cause all kinds of trouble for all kinds of people! Your life was on the line back there, Miss Mikuni! As for me, I'm a… a magical…"

She trails off, so Kyuubey finishes her sentence for her.

"A magical girl. You always get stuck on that part, Komaki. Why is that?"

"Oh shut up!" Komaki snaps. "I'm about ready to graduate from middle school! Who wouldn't be embarrassed by such a delusional title!?"

Seeing Oriko's incredulous look, Komaki adds.

"It ain't like I'm doing it cause I want to!" she shouts. "It was the price for getting my wish granted!"

"Oh?" Oriko asks. "What was your wish, Miss Komaki?"

"It's not like it was a big deal or…" Komaki blinks. "Wait! Don't tell me you're thinking of becoming a magical girl too!? Don't think it's all easy! I risk my life every day, fighting these witches! I'm telling you, it's a huge pain! And sometimes other magical girls come by to pick a fight! Just a few days ago there was this black magical girl who attacked me out of nowhere!"

"Komaki, please calm down," Kyuubey says. "There is no merit in having this conversation with Mikuni Oriko."

"Oh, I get it," Komaki says. "I guess you'd never have the stuff for it, right?"

She straightens up. "Okay, I gotta go! Unlike some people, Miss Mikuni, I got things to do! Oh, and don't bother coming to school anymore! I can't stand the sight of you, and all those snobs just keep gossiping whenever you're around! It's seriously annoying!"

"Say, Miss Komaki?" Oriko says.

Komaki pauses in what was probably meant to be a mad dash.

"Yes?"

"Well, I was thinking… why don't you join my team?"

Komaki blinks and turns to face her, looking confused. "Huh? What? Your… your team?"

Oriko nods. "Yes… I've teamed up with a Kure Kirika. It sounds like you've met her?"

Komaki gasps. "Th-that's the magical girl who attacked me a couple days ago!? You shouldn't get along with her! She's dangerous!"

"On the contrary, she's quite nice once you get to know her," Oriko says with a smile. "We want to work together to defeat Walpurgisnacht, you see, but I think having another ally would be wonderful."

Komaki turns to fully face her. "H-huh? Walpurgis… nacht…? How the hell do you know that name!?"

"Eh? Of course I'd know that name," Oriko says. "Kyuubey must have told you about my vision, right?"

"Th-that… that was… that was you!?" Komaki shouts. "Wait… you were already a magical girl!? Why didn't you say something before I started making a fool of myself explaining it all, you idiot!?"

"Well, you didn't exactly give me a chance, Miss Komaki," Oriko points out with a smile. "You just kept talking and talking and talking. At first I was about to explain things to you, but you just cut me off and kept talking. You should really let other people get a word in every now and then, Miss Komaki."

Komaki stares at her for several long seconds before she finally deflates.

"Y-you got me… I may have been a little too excited…" Komaki says. "Um… so yeah, about this team thing… I've been fighting alone for months now, ever since that fire, so it might be cool to be on a team, y'know? But I don't think I like the idea of teaming up with Kure Kirika…"

"Oh my, do you mean the fire in the school back in November?" Oriko gasps. "As a magical girl, that almost makes you a veteran!"

"Y-you think so?" Komaki says, rubbing her head. "I don't think I'm all that great though…"

She then smiles again. "Well, regarding Kure Kirika, I think you will find that she has changed quite a bit," she says. "Why not just stop by my house and see for yourself?"

"M-maybe another time!" Komaki says. "I did say I'm busy, so that means I'm busy!"

And with that, she runs off.

"What're you watching this time?" Komachi asks, sitting down beside me.

"Oh… Miss Asako and Miss Mikuni just discovered each other's identity as magical girls," I say. "And Miss Mikuni suggested they team up…"

"Well, it's good if they team up, right?" Komachi says. "We need as many as possible to defeat Walpurgisnacht, right?"

"Yeah, that should be a good thing," I nod. "Miss Kure confuses me a little though… Miss Asako said she attacked her a couple of days ago, but she seemed nice enough when I saw her yesterday…"

I was actually very surprised that Oriko came out and asked Komaki to be on her team. In the manga, she made sure to conceal her magical girl status from Komaki. But maybe it's because her goal in this timeline is to defeat Walpurgisnacht? In the manga, her goal was to prevent the birth of Kriemhild Gretchen, and her method of choice was to kill Kaname Madoka before she made a contract. Defeating Walpurgisnacht on the other hand doesn't require murdering someone, so perhaps that's what made the difference…

"Honestly… I have a feeling that Miss Kure may be insane too, but… not in the same way as Yu," I say. "That said, I didn't see much of her, so I could be wrong."

"Um," Hiyori speaks up, and I blink at her in surprise. She was so quiet I didn't even realize she was there. "I think… I think you shouldn't say things like that until you meet her."

"You might be right," I say. "I can't really judge her from just one fight… have you actually met her, Hiyori-chan? I know you must've passed by her a few times, but have you spoken to her or anything?"

"A little," Hiyori says. "She's a year below me, but even so, I've run into her a few times, when she actually bothers to attend, and we did exchange a few words. I always thought she seemed lonely."

"I see…" I muse. "Alright, that's enough about Mikuni Oriko and her team. Let's go hunt some witches."
