March twenty-fifth. A timid-looking pig-tailed girl with glasses leaves Mitakihara Middle School alone, looking rather morose. She slowly makes her way towards home, but similar to Oriko earlier, at some point she inexplicably turns down an alleyway and wanders into a witch's barrier. Then the girl suddenly notices the changed surroundings.
"W-w-what!? What is this place!?" she gasps, looking around at the red painted sky. "What's happening… to me!?"
Suddenly, strange white ghostly creatures appear and start moving in towards her, and she freezes up in fear.
"Noooo!"
But as the ghost-like figures loom closer she snaps out of it, turning to run away. Unfortunately, she trips and falls in short order, looking back in fear at her pursuers. At that moment, there's the sound of gunfire and the fwip of arrows, and Mami and Madoka show up to save the day.
"H-huh?" the girl with glasses says, looking up at her saviours.
"My, my, that was close," Mami says with a smile.
"It's me, Homura-chan," Madoka says. "It's alright now. Please keep this a secret from our classmates, okay?"
"Y-you're…"
But obviously, talking in the middle of a battle is a bad idea. More familiars appear, and Madoka and Mami resume the battle.
"They are magical girls who fight witches," Kyuubey explains, popping up from behind Homura.. "Witches are monsters like this one who spread curses. Just hold tight, they'll defeat it quickly."
Mami and Madoka have only been fighting together for a week, but it seems like they've already got some good teamwork going. They deal with the familiars quickly, progressing through the labyrinth with Homura cautiously following them. When they reach the witch's chamber, it turns out to be Izabel, who looks like the Arc de Triomphe. Between Madoka's arrows and Mami's muskets, they pummel Izabel with more firepower than she can defend against, and she quickly falls. Mami grabs the grief seed and turns to Homura with a smile.
"See? We fight scary beings like that nearly every day."
"A-amazing," Homura gasps. "Th-that was… that was… incredible…"
"Why don't you come over to my place for some tea and cake?" Mami asks. "Your parents won't mind, right?"
"Ah… sure," Homura nods. "I'll come…"
As the barrier collapses, Mami and Madoka power down, and they lead Homura back to Mami's apartment, where Mami proceeds to brew tea and serve cake, just as promised.
"Um… are you always fighting scary things like that?" Homura asks.
"W-well… Miss Mami is the veteran here." Madoka admits. "I only just made my contract with Kyuubey last week, so I'm still a rookie."
"You say that, but you're improving fast, Miss Kaname," Mami says. "Even just in today's battle, you performed much better than before."
"Is this… really okay?" Homura asks. "You're not… scared?"
"Well, I can't really say it's okay," Madoka admits, and even Mami looks at her as she explains her thoughts. "Obviously we would get scared. But you see, by defeating witches, we can save lots of people, so I think it's a really meaningful job."
Mami smiles at her warmly.
"Miss Kaname, you should work really hard to become an outstanding magical girl. If you do, I'm sure we can even defeat Walpurgisnacht when it arrives."
"Um… what about… what about me?" Homura asks timidly.
Madoka blinks. "I'm sure you'd make a wonderful magical girl, Homura-chan!" she says. "I'd be really happy to fight together with you!"
Mami sighs. "Well… that said, you should never become a magical girl on a whim, Miss Akemi. It's a calling that bears great responsibility, not a way to escape from your problems."
"I… I see," Homura murmurs.
"But you know, I used to be the same as you," Madoka says. "I felt powerless… useless. I didn't really have anything I was good at. But then, I made a wish and became a magical girl, and it gave me a new purpose in life. I think I'm feeling more and more confident as I defeat more and more witches! I'm sure your confidence would increase too if you became a magical girl, Homura-chan!" Noticing Mami's severe look, she then backpedals a little. "B-but Miss Mami is right about one thing. It's a lot of responsibility. You should think carefully over whether you want to become a magical girl, Homura-chan."
"O-okay… I will…"
Satisfied that at least I've managed to confirm that Homura is well on the path to her contract, according to the original anime, I decide to do some witch hunting. The Hayashi sisters seem to have something else to do, so for the first time since Itzli, I'll be fighting alone today.
I close my eyes and scan for magic signatures. I pick one up to the north, so I head in that direction. A few minutes later, I discover a portal and step inside. However, it's only a familiar – a pair of legs wearing a skirt and ice skates. I transform and cut it down with a few well-placed swings of my sword, then seek another magical signature.
"Are you the one?"
I whirl to face the speaker, a tall woman dressed simply in a long red skirt and black long-sleeved shirt. She has her brown hair coiled up into a bun, and is also wearing red lip gloss and, I think, a hint of eye shadow accenting her brown eyes. But the odd thing is that I never heard her coming, not even with my enhanced magical girl hearing. My eyes slide down to her hands, but even though she's not wearing gloves, there's no ring to identify her as a magical girl, nor even a fingernail marking. A ring could have been removed, but unlike Pernelle in her disguise, her nails haven't been painted, so at least the fingernail marking should've been visible.
"W-who are you!?"
The woman doesn't seem to hear my question. She tilts her head, frowning a little and muttering to herself. We're both speaking English.
"No… was I mistaken? She seems to be a perfectly normal magical girl, although on the stronger side…"
"Um… excuse me?"
How could this woman know about magical girls if she isn't one herself?
"But there's no doubt that something has changed…" the woman muses.
Perhaps she's a magical girl who has already transformed. I'm not sure if the fingernail marking is still visible when transformed, since a lot of girls have gloves as part of their outfit. I scan her for anything that looks like it could be a soul gem. There's no jewellery at all in the typical places, though – chest, waist, legs, arms, hands, or hair ornaments. But she does have a pair of earrings studded with diamond-shaped gems. It's apparently rare for a soul gem to be placed in an earring, but Michiru Kazusa is an example of one, so it's possible.
However, I don't think either of those gems could be a soul gem. A soul gem shines brightly as long as it's not corrupted, and as it grows corrupted, it's filled with a black void of despair that seems to suck in all light. These gems fit neither description. They're dim and murky, but in a muddy sort of way, with hints of every colour imaginable floating within them.
And yet… I'm not quite sure, but I think my soul gem is reacting to her, and those earrings do seem to be the core of the reaction. It's not a sort of reaction I've experienced before, though. When I detect a magical girl, it's almost like my soul gem is humming in harmony with the other girl, metaphorically speaking. When it's a witch, it's sort of grating, like a buzzing or scraping feeling. This reaction is dissonant, but not grating. Either way, though… I'm clearly detecting some kind of magic from her.
There is one other thing that stands out in my scrutiny of this woman. I hadn't noticed it at first, but it looks like there are crosses engraved into her pupils. It's very strange – in theory, she could be wearing contact lenses with a pattern on them, but wouldn't that obscure her vision? Could those crosses be something like the fingernail marking of a magical girl? But why would it be on the eyes instead of a fingernail?
The woman half turns to gaze up at the sun, seemingly lost in thought. I watch her cautiously, wondering what this is all about. She seems to be interested in me, but why? Suddenly she spins and points at me.
"You there," she says. "State your name."
I blink at the sudden change in demeanour, but I don't think there's any reason not to give my name.
"I'm Ashley Taylor. Who are you?"
"Taylor… a common name," the woman sighs. Then she suddenly glares at me. "But no… you're lying, aren't you? That isn't your real name."
Huh? How could she possibly know something like that?
"No, it's true!" I protest. "I really am Ashley Taylor!"
She gasps, and abruptly her expression softens.
"Incredible… I get it now," she whispers. "Is it their doing? No… they can't possibly do something like that… creating a composite soul would never even occur to them. But it could explain her strength, to a degree…"
Who is she talking about now? The incubators, maybe? What's a composite soul? Wait second!? Does it have something to do with my memories from the other world? Is it possible that this woman might even know something about the circumstances that brought me to this world? On a whim, I blurt out my secret.
"Actually, I do have another name," I say. "I used to be called Chelsea Flanders."
The woman blinks at me. "A Fleming…?"
"A what now? I'm from North America…"
That's true both as Ashley and as Chelsea. Ashley is from Santa Cruz, of course, while as Chelsea I used to live in Vancouver. As I look on, wondering just where this encounter is going to lead, the woman starts muttering to herself again.
"A composite soul in the new land… could this be what you foresaw, my beloved? Will I be able to see you again soon?" Then she presses her hands together at face level and lowers her head a little, in a praying posture. "O Almighty Lord in Heaven, speak to me, your devoted Mary! What is the point of these powers if we cannot even be together!?"
And then she just fades away without even answering my questions. It's like someone grabbed an eraser and just rubbed her out of the world until she was gone. I guess that at least explains how she managed to sneak up on me – a teleportation skill would certainly make it easy. What the heck was that all about, though?
At the last moment, she revealed her name, Mary… actually, that name is familiar. Pernelle mentioned an ancient magical girl by that name before, but… is this woman even a magical girl? It almost seems like she's something different… and I'm not sure she's entirely sane, either. But it's certainly not possible for her to be a witch, right? Although Isabeau did retain her consciousness when she became a witch, so I suppose there's precedent… still, this woman seemed more scatterbrained than malevolent, and she didn't feel like a witch.
She also mentioned "the new land", no doubt a direct reference to the meaning of Shinriku Prefecture. I'd gotten so used to everyone taking its existence for granted, but is that a hint that I'm right to consider it strange? Maybe I should ask Pernelle about it next time we meet. I don't think the knowledge is likely to actually help me, but I'm getting curious about it.
As I ponder the strange encounter, I pick up another magical signature and start tracking it. I end up spending a couple of hours destroying Patricia's errant familiars, but I fail to locate the main witch. I suspect she's towards the city centre; Mami and Madoka will no doubt finish her off soon.
April first. Mami, Madoka, and Homura leave school together to patrol for witches. It's not long before they pick up the trail of one, moving from curse mark to curse mark until they find the portal. Mami and Madoka transform and step inside. Homura of course does not transform, since she hasn't yet made a contract.
The labyrinth is a veritable spiderweb of crisscrossing clotheslines stretching across a vast sky, with an infinite number of sailor shirts hanging off of them. The shirts are not secured with clothespins – the line actually passes in one arm of each shirt and out the other arm.
As Homura falls, clinging to one of the clotheslines, Mami and Madoka run along them to target the familiars, each one a pair of legs wearing a skirt and ice skates. Mami is able to defeat them in a single shot from her musket, or two at the most, but Madoka needs three or four shots from her bow to take down a single familiar. However, unlike Mami, she can fire several shots at the same time, so on average, both of them are about equally effective.
"T-this is really difficult to walk in!" Homura gasps, struggling to stand on the swaying clothesline.
"Don't worry about us, Homura-chan!" Madoka says. "Just hang in there!"
"We can easily take care of these familiars," Mami adds. "Once they're dealt with, I can give you a leg up."
The three of them slowly work their way up through the web of clotheslines, with Mami helping Homura up with her ribbons whenever the familiars become sparse. Finally they emerge from the top of the snarl to gaze up at the clear sky. There are still clotheslines stretching even further upwards, but they are far less dense at this point.
Suddenly, a shower of chairs and desks appears, falling from the sky like rain. Mami and Madoka easily dodge them, but some of them narrowly miss Homura, and she once more falls over, clinging to the clothesline. Then the witch appears from above, climbing down some of the clotheslines. Apart from her massive size, she looks almost like an ordinary schoolgirl, only she seems to lack a head, and her feet are replaced with hands. The falling furniture seems to originate from under her skirt.
A new horde of familiars appear, and Madoka focuses a barrage of arrows on them, holding them off.
"Miss Mami, I'll open up a path for you!" Madoka calls.
"Got it!" Mami replies.
Madoka's arrows clear away the bulk of the familiars, while Mami pulls out an array of muskets and fires them up the witch's skirt, one at a time. Once they're all expanded, she summons a cannon, aiming it directly at the witch and waiting for a clear path. Madoka fells the last few familiars and turns towards her.
"Miss Mami, now's your chance!" Madoka calls.
"Tiro Finale!" Mami calls.
The cannon fires, smacking the witch squarely in the nether regions and causing her to sort of pop, releasing a grief seed. Then Mami turns to catch Homura with a ribbon as the barrier collapses, while Madoka leaps up to grab the grief seed.
"D-did you do it?" Homura asks, turning to look upwards.
Even as she asks, the barrier finishes collapsing and Madoka hugs her.
"We did it!"
"You did an excellent job, Miss Kaname," Mami says.
"Oh please, it was nothing special," Madoka says, rubbing her head in embarrassment.
"I… I wish I could help the two of you," Homura says sadly. "B-but I'm probably too clumsy to be a magical girl…"
"Heya," Komachi says.
I open my eyes. "Oh, you're already back?"
"Well, it's not that far to the middle school," Komachi says.
"W-what have you seen today?" Hiyori asks curiously.
"Oh, nothing special, just Tomoe Mami fighting a witch with her new partner…"
"Oh right, you did mention something about that before," Komachi says. "I wonder if we should go introduce ourselves…"
"W-we shouldn't bother Miss Tomoe," Hiyori says quickly. "I'm sure she's really busy both with school and magical girl duties…"
"Yeah… I guess you're right," Komachi says.
"Alright… shall we go hunt a witch?" I say.
We head to the nearby shopping mall as a starting point, the same place we began our hunt for Quitterie. However, none of us are able to sense any magic in the vicinity, and we don't see any witch's kisses on the passersby, so I eventually suggest we head north. There's a gym and a public bathhouse in that direction, so it seems a plausible place to find traces of a witch. Komachi and Hiyori agree, and we start walking.
We're passing the gym when I sense something and stop, trying to determine a direction. Komachi and Hiyori stop a moment later and turn back to look at me.
"Did you… sense something?" Hiyori asks,
"Actually… I think I sense it too," Komachi says. "It's over in that direction… I think?"
We turn down a side street and enter an alleyway behind the gym, and there's the trace of magic. Unfortunately, it's not the witch's barrier, just a curse placed upon the ground. However, with the magic right in front of us, we can easily learn its signature and use that to track it more effectively.
"I think… over there!" Hiyori says eagerly. "I can sense something… maybe?"
We follow her directions to another curse mark, this time placed on the wall of someone's house. Continuing in this manner, we eventually arrive at a large yet run-down Western-style house.
"Ohhh… this is the famous haunted house!" Komachi gasps. "Students often use it for a test of courage in the summer holidays. I never did it myself though… if only Elise were here, we could ask her about it…"
"Well, we can't dwell on that," I sigh. "It does look like the witch is here… the magical signature is quite a bit stronger. Let's go inside."
We leap over the tall fence and land in the garden within. For magical girls, leaping three or four times our own height is nothing special. Then we make a beeline for the front door, which appears to be hanging off its hinges. Following the sense of the magic, we head up a grand staircase and turn into what appears to be an old bedroom. The portal is in the middle of the room. It looks like one of those round Christmas baubles that everyone puts on their trees, and is surrounded by a border that resembles a wreath of holly and fir. And furthermore, the portal is flickering rapidly.
"What does that flickering mean?" Komachi asks. "I don't think I've ever seen that before…"
"It means there's already someone in there, fighting," I say. "Let's go see if they need our help."
"R-right!" Komachi nods.
"We gotta help them if we can!" Hiyori says.
We enter the portal and find ourselves in almost an arctic wasteland. Snow expands to the horizon in all directions, but it's broken up by gigantic Christmas trees here and there, glowing balefully at us as if telling us to just go away. Incongruously, there are also gigantic strawberries scattered here and there across the snow, each one almost as tall as myself. To be clear, these aren't strawberry plants – they're the actual fruit.
Then the familiars pop up. They look like some sort of grotesque version of Christmas elves, dressed in crimson jackets resembling strawberries and wielding glowing red maces that also resemble strawberries. They swarm us as we transform, and Komachi and I quickly set about cutting them down with our weapons.
"These familiars are weak, but there's so many of them!" Komachi complains. "They just keep on coming!"
"We need to find a way to restrain them or something…"
"I-I'm on it!" Hiyori says.
She plucks out a jingle on her harp, and then the harp strings detach themselves, flailing out across the snowy plains and tying the elf familiars into neat little bundles. Within seconds, the number of familiars attacking us is cut literally in half, making it much easier to bring down those that remain. And then, a little squeezing of those bundled elves, just tightening the noose a little, and most of them perish as well.
"Hiyori… you're actually really strong," I say. "Why don't you use that skill more often!?"
"H-huh? But it does take a lot of magic…"
"Oh… I see, that's a good reason, I guess. But this is the first time I've seen you use it, so I still think you should try to find more places where you can use it…"
"R-right… I'll try…"
There are more elves still appearing, but their ranks are considerably thinner than before. As I close my eyes to use clairvoyance to find a route, I hear Hiyori strike up the dissonant song that she uses as a ranged attack. Let me see… ah, the biggest central Christmas tree appears to have a door at its base! I open my eyes and point.
"That way! To the tree!"
"Got it!" Komachi says.
We break into a run, fending off the elves as we move, and arrive at the tree in question. It towers over us, with the first branches jutting out at least twenty, maybe thirty feet up, and the trunk itself is probably four to five feet in diameter. The door is framed in holly and fir, and has large runes emblazoned across it.
"This witch is called Nikola, huh," I muse. "Isn't that a bit too on-the-nose for a Christmas-themed witch though?"
"How can you tell what her name is?" Komachi asks.
I point at the runes. "Right there. Those runes spell out her name… so, the first one is an N, the second an I, then a K, an O, an L, and an A."
"How did you even figure something like that out?" Hiyori marvels.
"W-well… that's a long story," I say. "Let's get going before the familiars catch up."
Komachi leaps forward and slashes the door to shreds with her naginata, and then we step through. Once inside, I pause to take in the scene before me. The witch is a massive blob decked out with innumerable baubles, and a single huge eye right in the centre. She attacks by expelling presents from the top and propelling them at the opponent. The room itself looks kind of like a shrine, but filled with vaguely Christmas-like decorations, usually with a creepy twist. For example, baubles with an eye, or a mouth full of sharp teeth.
The magical girl fighting the witch wears a hooded black cloak with grey accents which, at the moment we enter, is flared out because she is in the middle of a fall. Beneath that she wears a short, sleeveless black vest, a double-layered skirt, and pink thigh-high stockings. The underlayer of the skirt is purple and opaque with a wavy hem, while the upper layer is diaphanous pink, a few inches longer than the lower layer. Something about that design seems vaguely familiar to me, but I can't seem to quite place it…
The girl projects a shield that seems to be built up from puzzle pieces, deflecting several thrown presents. Then she flings one of her gymnastic clubs at the witch, which explodes on impact. Moments later, she lands on the ground and hops to the side to avoid more of those thrown presents.
"Let's connect, Hiyori," I say. "Then you can use your sonic blast to charm her. Komachi, please help the other girl, and if her soul gem's in bad shape…"
"Got it!" Komachi says.
"Okay!" Hiyori nods.
Hiyori and I slap hands, the telltale light of a connect flashing between them, while Komachi runs forward, dodging the presents to get to the other girl. Then I summon Teddy Mk II and hop onto his head to rise up into the air, moving towards the witch from above.
"Are you okay?" Komachi calls. "Need some help?"
The other girl gasps at the sound of her voice and falters her evasion, tripping and falling; but Komachi jumps in and slices a present in half to protect her before offering a hand to help her back up. Then Hiyori's sonic blast strikes the witch, and it stops throwing presents.
"U-um, I'm… I'm okay," the girl says. "But… I don't think I can beat this one…"
"Your soul gem does look okay," Komachi says. "Alright, let's do this together. You use bombs, right?" The other girl nods. "Then let's all attack while it's charmed!"
The girl looks at the witch in surprise. "Huh? It's not attacking anymore?"
"That's the effect of my magic!" I call down. "Hurry up and attack it!"
I take my own advice and jump off of Teddy Mk II, landing directly on top of the opening from which Nikola expels her presents and burying my sword deep inside her. Teddy Mk II follows me down, stomping heavily beside me, and Komachi jumps in with her naginata and pierces the witch's eye. From the way she sticks there and begins to glow, I can tell she's using her energy drain. Hiyori keeps up her sonic blasts, although I don't think they're having much of an effect, and then the new girl begins what I suspect to be her ultimate attack. She summons a ring of spinning gymnastic batons, then flings them en masse at the witch. One after another, they land on the witch and explode, leaving behind vast swathes of burn marks and mangled baubles.
"Is… is it still… alive?" the girl asks.
"I think so," I say, pulling my sword out. "But she's severely weakened… we should be able to finish her off quickly."
Hiyori and the new girl hold back and watch as Komachi and I proceed to attack it with our edged weapons. As I expected, it doesn't take long to break through her thick skin, at which point she bursts into a cloud of snow and vanishes, leaving behind a grief seed. I snatch it out of the air before approaching the dark girl.
"So… who are you?" I ask. "Why are you hunting witches around here?"
"W-well, um… I'm sorry," the girl says. "I'm not even from around here… I'm from Takarazaki, across the bay… but I had to come here to run an errand for a friend, and I happened to notice this witch, so… I thought I should… deal with it… um… my name is Kuroe Asaka."
Oh! No wonder she seemed familiar. Kuroe from Takarazaki, with a dark hooded cloak, and her soul gem strapped to her thigh… there's no doubt about it. She's a magical girl originally exclusive to the Magia Record anime. Now that I'm standing in front of her, I realize she's quite short, even slightly shorter than Hiyori.
Finding Kuroe here reminds me of something I've been worrying about recently. I've checked up on Minami Rena a few times with my clairvoyance, hoping that she may have already met Tamaki Iroha, but it doesn't seem like she has. I'm worried that Iroha might not even exist, which could make my plan to kickstart the formation of the Magius a fool's errand.
"Um… I'm sure this sounds like a really strange question out of the blue," I say. "But, since you're from Takarazaki… do you happen to know a girl named Tamaki Iroha?"
Kuroe tilts her head. "Tamaki… Iroha? Is she a magical girl?"
"I'm not sure," I reply.
"I don't recognize the name… sorry," Kuroe says.
"Okay… thanks anyway," I say.
If she doesn't even know Iroha, it's likely that she's not a magical girl, assuming she exists. Without Iroha's contract, there's no impetus for her sister and friends to contract, and no way for the Magius to form. Now, the existence of the Magius was called out as something very unusual in Magia Record, so I'm not at all surprised that it hasn't happened in this first timeline, but I'd like to at least confirm that it's an outcome I can produce if I interfere in the right way.
"Do you have any grief seeds left?" I ask.
"I only have one… it has one or two uses left," Kuroe replies.
"Well then… let's all use this grief seed," I say. "After all, we all helped to defeat her."
I lean down to press it to her soul gem, then press it to my own, and finally pass it to Komachi who purifies her own and Hiyori's gems.
"I think there's even another use left still," Komachi says.
"Nice. So… Miss Kuroe, you just sensed a witch and came to see it, right?"
Kuroe nods. "Yes… that's right… I just thought it would be bad to let it go… I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it," I say. "This may be our territory, but you didn't know that, so it can't be helped."
Now that the barrier has collapsed, we all power down. I don't recognize the school uniform she's wearing, though I think it's the same as in the anime… my memory's a little fuzzy.
"Um… about this girl you were asking about," Kuroe speaks up. "Should I… help you look for her?"
I blink at her in surprise. "Huh? You'd do that?"
"W-well… you let me share the grief seed even though I was in the wrong… so it feels like I owe you a favour," Kuroe murmurs.
"Well… if you'd like to find which school she goes to, that would be helpful," I say. "She should be a middle school student in Takarazaki, and I think she might have pink hair, but that's all I can say for sure. Also, I doubt she goes to the same school as you, though again… I can't be certain about that."
Kuroe nods. "O-okay… I'll see if I can find that information… um… I'll need your contact info though…"
"Right…"
I take out my phone and tap it against Kuroe's, then immediately edit her name to add the sparkle emoji.
"Well… I hope to hear from you soon," I say.
If I don't hear from her by the end of April though, it'll be too late… but April just began, so that's a whole month away. The worst that can happen is that I learn nothing, and the best thing that could happen is that I have a lead to find Iroha.
Once Kuroe has left, Komachi gives me a strange look and asks me a question.
"So um… that was weird," she says. "Who is this Tamaki Iroha and why do you want to find her?"
"Well, she's a magical girl who can save us from our tragic fate," I reply.
"I thought you said you weren't sure if she's a magical girl," Komachi says.
"No, what I mean is… if she becomes a magical girl, she could save us. I don't know if she already has though."
"And… how exactly is she supposed to do that?" Komachi asks.
"That's… complicated," I sigh. "I mean, the magical girl system has been in place for millennia… you can't expect it to be easy. But still, she's the key to everything."
"You're talking like you know the future, like Miss Mikuni," Hiyori murmurs.
"Well… your intuition isn't far off," I say. "But it's not an ability… I just have a wealth of information that no-one else has. It wasn't enough to save Claire and Elise, after all…"
"Let's go home," Komachi says abruptly. "I'm getting really hungry."
