Prologue

Years before two certain toms kats became their city's greatest heroes, before they enlisted in the Enforcers even.

At an airport, an eighteen-year-old she-kat with red hair, green eyes, and rare white fur was bidding farewell to her two kitten-hood friends before she would ride to her new home she and her parents would live, far away from their old home and its dangers that seemed to be growing worse.

Today

Four years since that heavy-hearted good-bye, the girl was returning to the place she had hoped to put behind her forever. She thought she was out of her mind daring to go back to MegaKat City, the place of nightmares.

She sat next to the window, thinking of how she and the new friends she had made shortly after moving, had gotten last looks of their beautiful island home, its clean waters and skies, the ever-safe neighborhoods. One would think the dangers of the outside world, especially in one particular city didn't exist.

"But they do exist… That's why I'm coming back… to help keep the people's hopes alive."

After many days of setting up the place for their temporary home which was safely away from the most dangerous parts of town, she said bye to her friends for a while before she made her way to a place that was on the outskirts of MegaKat City, too. It was a body shop where two guys were stuck working at to pay a humongous debt.

"At least they're far enough from the insanity of town."

When she was close, she tiptoed to the entrance where she saw a lean tom whom she was very ecstatic to see working under a car, so he didn't see her step in.

"I'm going to give him the shock of his nine lives."

She stepped up to him until she stood by his feet, her hands behind her back. She kept silent when he thought she was someone else.

"Hey, Chance, glad you're back already. You mind handing me a wrench?"

She didn't respond with words, but she did give him what he asked for, putting it in his extended hand without sliding himself out.

"Thanks."

She grinned widely, enjoying his being oblivious to her presence, waiting either for him to say something or for his partner to come in so she could hide and catch them both off guard.

"Hey, Chance, is everything okay out there? You're quieter than usual."

She giggled, deliberately not trying to keep it down so he would hear how feminine she sounded. This did weird him out because it did not sound like Chance's voice.

"And what's with your voice?" The mechanic finally slid out, the russet-furred kat shocked to see it wasn't his best guy friend Chance but another friend he didn't think he would see ever again.

"Hi, Jake," she giggled again with a wave of her left hand. "Surprise~"

"Rosella, is that you?" he checked, sitting up.

"It sure is. It's been a long time," she smiled.

He got up and embraced her, the she-kat who was a half a foot shorter than him, savoring his warmth and presence she thought she had seen the last of at the airport.

"Have I missed you guys."

"We've missed you, too. How long has it been?"

"Four years." Rosella felt a little surprised as she felt his back and arms a little as she leaned back. "Wow, and it seems like you've kept in shape. You feel even more muscular than when we said good-bye."

"Oh, yeah… Chance and I have been toning up when we're not tuning up, you know, to stay healthy," Jake explained, trying not to sound too awkward about the subject.

"Yeah, and you've gotten a little bigger, too. I'm almost afraid to see how much Chance has changed."

"Hey, don't worry, he's still the same on the inside." He took a look at her own appearance. "You've changed a bit, too. You look a little taller and slenderer."

"Thank you. Living on the islands and dancing have been good to me," she grinned, her hands on her hips. "Where is Chance, anyway?"

"He's washing grease from his face. He oughta be back any minute."

"Okay, but I'd like to surprise him, too," she requested, holding her hands in gleeful fists.

Jake laughed slightly. "You always loved surprising others. All right, maybe you can hide in there?" he suggested, pointing at a tool closet that she could fit in.

Rosella nodded, soundlessly slipping inside and right on time because their mutual friend Chance had finally returned.

"Oh, man, we're gonna have to make some kind of masks to protect our faces from greases, Jake," he commented, drying his hands with a white rag. "I spent so much time cleanin' my muzzle, it's any wonder my facial fur is still on."

"I'm sure we'll have something to keep ourselves clean," Jake assured, playing coy and putting on his usual expression so not to reveal Rosella's location.

The she-kat covered her mouth, smiling beneath her hands as she waited for her move. Jake gave her the opportunity as he casually asked, "Oh, and could you get me something from the tool closet?"

"Sure, what do you need?" he queried, looking over his right shoulder as he opened the closet. He didn't get his answer as he was tackled by a small person wrapping her arms around his shoulders.

"Chancie!" she cried affectionately, not letting go.

"What the heck is-?!" The big tom stopped before looking at his "attacker". "'Chancie'?" Seeing the familiar redhead innocently smiling up at him, he grinned ear-to-ear before laughing loudly and tightly embracing her, carefully spinning around as if greeting a long-lost sister. "Rosie, I can't believe it! It's you!"

They stopped, Chance putting her down and gently ruffling her hair with his right hand, "What's the idea of jumping out from hiding like that? Tryin' to give an old friend a heart attack?"

"No, of course not."

"A-And you," he grinned at Jake, "you knew she was in there and you sent me to get ambushed?"

"Guilty," Jake chuckled.

"Yes, but I insisted. You know me, Chance."

"Yes, I do, I know both of ya are bad in your own way," Chance laughed, his hands on his two friends' shoulders.

"Aw, come on, Chancie, it's all good fun."

"Yeah, 'sides, you enjoy Scaredy Kat goin' through this kinda thing," Jake pointed out with a smirk.

"Hey, it's one thing to watch this, but to star in it…"

All three laughed.

"Oh, boy, just like old times," she commented. "I didn't think we'd be together like this in a very long time."

"What brings you back so suddenly, Rosella?" Jake wondered. "We… thought you never wanted to come back."

"I have my reasons. I didn't come back by myself, though. You know the friends I wrote to you about? They came with."

"Well, we're glad you're not alone, then," Chance approved. "When do we get to meet'em?"

"Yeah, you've said nothin' but nice things about them."

"You'll see them soon enough, but I wanted to catch up with you guys first."

The three sat around a square dining table to drink cans of ice-cold milk to chat about how they had been doing in the last four years. Rosella knew already the poor boys had ended up dismissed from the Enforcers from the news she would watch to keep tabs on MegaKat City, but she kept that to herself.

"I've been hearing about two virtuous vigilantes called the SWAT Kats have been doin' a major public service while keepin' their identities private," she remarked, her face leaning on the back of her hands.

That particular subject was something that lighted them up, though they spoke about it calmly.

"Yeah, they've been pickin' up the slack for Feral and the Enforcers, not that they're grateful," Chance said, frowning the very second he mentioned their former commanding officer and colleagues.

Rosella knew Commander Ulyssesus Feral had unfairly kicked them out of the force, not listening to reason with them just because he was more experienced than they were.

"Of course, his niece Lieutenant Felina Feral seems pretty okay with them," Jake pointed out, both him and Chance relaxing at the thought of most decent Enforcer member.

"Yes, I've heard plenty about her. I'm glad the SWAT Kats have one Enforcer supporter. I wouldn't mind meeting her one of these days."

"Oh, we're sure you'll like her well enough. Wish we could, too, if that was possible," Chance said, secretly winking at Jake.

"Yeah, if we weren't here most of the time," Jake shrugged, playing it cool.

"You know, whenever you guys want to take a break, we are opening a club for everyone to come to unwind and cheer up about everything," she offered.

"That sounds great. You can consider us as regulars."

"Wonderful, it still needs a little bit of work, though, but it'll be open soon."

They stood outside the shop, saying bye for now.

"Hey, it's really good to see ya again, Rosie," Chance grinned sincerely, the two hugging, "even if you did almost make me jump out of my fur."

"Likewise."

"Don't be a stranger here, either," Jake requested, hugging her, too. "Come by any time we're on break time."

"Sure," she agreed, enjoying the embrace with him the longest before slowly going on her way. "Bye, fellas." When she turned around, she whispered, "And stay safe."

"Why'd you say come only durin' breaks? Sure, with us goin' on sky patrol and missions..." Chance said when they were alone.

"'Cause, no way we want Murry and Burke findin' out about her," Jake answered, frowning at the thought of those bullying losers. "One look at her and they'll no doubt flirt with her relentlessly and probably try to find out where she lives to bug her to date one of them."

Chance completely understood his point and was grossed out at the thought of any poor girl hit on by those idiots. "Oh, yeah. And no female friend of ours is gonna have those nitwits on her case. Plus, they might give her friends grief, too, flirting with her she-kat friends and pick on her male friends to make themselves look impressive, especially in front of the girls."

"Exactly, so for all of their sakes, we keep those two ignorant."

"Hey, making Burke and Murry ignorant ain't exactly a world-class challenge," Chance grinned with a shrug, making his best friend smile. "At least they all are safe from any of the crazy stuff from MegaKat City also."

"Yeah, they chose a good spot to have their club. I have to admit, it sure is brave of Rosella to come back to make people feel a whole lot better about everything."

"Not too different from what her parents would have done, buddy. You know how dedicated they were to helpin' people," Chance reminded, both of them thinking fondly of the Pearl couple who were like parents to them, too.

Their hearts broke again at the thought of their untimely passing, but they were overjoyed to have Rosella visit them again.

They just hoped she and the good islanders would definitely be safe from the usual threats, not just the two banes of their existence. They were just two buzzing flies compared to the criminals who were plagues of killer insects of electrocution, bullets or explosives and such.

Hello, hope you all like the friendly prologue. If you all are familiar with my altered Dr. Viper story, you can rest assured there won't be scary stuff here. Some of this will seem altered here as well from some of the show. There will be a love triangle, a suspenseful one. See you all next time, and God Jehovah bless.
