Chapter 2- Harry Wayne Meets His Wand

"Who are you?" Harry asked.

"My name's Hagrid. Hagrid Pennyworth. And ya best be comin' with me my boy. I think you've caused enough trouble for one day wouldn't ya agree?"

"But what about Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon…and Dudley?" Harry said.

"Oh, it looks to me like your winged friends will be keeping them busy for quite a while. Plus, I've got an invitation for you!"

"An invitation?" Harry asked, confused.

"Yes lad," Hagrid explained; "In fact, you've been getting the invitations in the mail for months but yer selfish would-be care takers never took the liberty of giving them to ya."

"What is the invitation for?" Harry asked.

"There's only one way to find out isn't there? Go ahead, open it!"

Harry looked at the envelope and could tell there was something special about it and its contents before he even opened it. He carefully took his fingers to lift the tab of the envelope open and took out the letter that was inside. He unfolded it and began to read.

"What…..what does this mean?" Harry asked.

"Harry-yer a wizard!" Hagrid declared.

"I'm a what!?" Harry asked.

"A wizard, of course, and a thumpin' good one, I'd say, once you've been trained up a bit. With a mum and dad like yours, what else would ya be?" Hagrid exclaimed.

"What do you mean? My parents didn't have anything to do with wizards" Harry said.

"Ahhhhhhh, there's a lot ya don't know young sir. And there's only one way for ya to learn it. So lad! What do ya say? Would ya like to go off on a new adventure and fulfill your destiny or stay here with…..them?"

Harry looks at Hagrid and smiles, "I want to go!"

"Of course you do lad, of course you do! Now, lets be on our way!" Hagrid says.

Harry and Hagrid leave the nocturnal building and make it around to a section of the Zoo that features creatures that live in or near the water, like sea otters, sea lions and penguins. Just then…..

Uncle Vernon comes running towards them.

"You're not taking him anywhere! He is staying with us until I am good and ready to let him leave! And I am certainly not letting him run off with one of you….. magical freaks! That's why I got rid of all the letters that you sent. He will never go with you to that ridiculous place!" Uncle Vernon says angrily.

Harry notices that Uncle Vernon seems to actually be aware of the magical things that Hagrid was telling him about. "Could this really all be true?" He thinks.

Dudley sticks his head out from behind his father, "Yeah, he isn't goin' with you!" He says while still out of breath from running from the nocturnal building to the sea creatures' section. That is probably the most exercise Dudley has gotten in years, Harry thinks.

"Don't strain yourself over this urchin!" Aunt Dot says. "He has been a burden on us for far too long! We should be glad he is going!"

"No, he isn't goin! I am not done with him yet!" Dudley yells.

"I'm afraid you don't have a choice in the matter wee portly one. This is Harry's decision to make, not yours!"

"His decision my bum! Grab him Dudley!" Uncle Vernon says.

Dudley lunges at Harry to grab him and just then Hagrid pulls out what appears to be a magic wand. He says some words that Harry doesn't understand and then waves the wand at Dudley. Just then Dudley starts to look like something is wrong. "What's happening to me!? Whack! Whack!"

Dudley starts to shrink until he has completely transformed into….a penguin!?

"A penguin? You turned him into a penguin!" Harry said while completely astonished.

"Well, we are standing right in front of the penguin exhibit after all! He'll fit right in!" Hagrid said, obviously pleased with his work.

"Dudley! My poor, poor Dudley! What have you done to my baby?!" Change him back this instant, you cretin!" Aunt Dot demands.

"I'm afraid I can't do that," Hagrid explains. "The spell will wear off…..eventually. Although there may indeed be some side effects."

"Side effects!? What kind of side effects!?" Aunt Dot asks.

"Well, if truth be told, the spell that binds a human with the spirit of an animal can never be completely broken; so, although he will indeed regain his human form at some point….let's just say he will also most certainly retain some characteristics of the great auk, or pinguinis impennis if yer up on yer Latin." Hagrid declares.

"SQUAQ! SQUAK!" comes from the penguin Dudley as if to say "this isn't fair!"

The next day Hagrid takes Harry to visit Ollivander's Store of Magic. Harry is truly in awe of all of the wonders that are surrounding him. He can feel the magic in every object that he sees and touches. He thinks to himself how not long ago he was trapped in a dull and drab life with the Cobblepots and now he is here getting the items off of the list so that he might attend the prestigious Hogwarts School of Magic. It was almost too much to believe.

"Go ahead Harry, right over there is where ya want to go!" Hagrid says.

"What's over there?" Harry asks.

"Are ya a wizard or not Harry?" Hagrid says.

"Ummm, I don't know…"

"Ahem!" Hagrid intervenes.

"Ahh, yes, I suppose that I am." Harry declares.

"Well then! If yer a wizard then you need the one thing that every wizard simply must have! A tool of the trade for any wizard worth his salt!" Hagrid says excitedly.

"A wand!" Harry says with a smile.

"Yes, indeed a wand! Now just take yer self on over there and have a gander at those beauties Plus, I've got to run out for an errand. I'll be right back!" Hagrid says.

Harry slowly makes his way over to the wand counter. His eyes grow so large they almost fill the frames of his glasses.

Harry knows that he will need someone to help show him the wands so he calls out..

"Hello"

An older man with frizzy silver hair is on a ladder with wheels on it comes sliding over. The man looks down and upon seeing Harry says; "I wondered when I'd be seeing you Mr. Wayne!"

The man climbs down the ladder while Harry watches and then says; "It seems only yesterday that your mother and father were in here buying their first wands."

The man (who Harry starts to figure out must be Ollivander who the store is named after) gets a box and takes a wand out of it. He hands the wand to Harry.

Harry takes the wand but just stares at it in awe.

"Well go ahead, give it a wave!" Ollivander says.

Harry waves the wand which instantly causes many of the boxes to fly out of their bins and come crashing on the floor creating a mess.

Olivander looks at Harry and says, "Apparently not."

Olivander then gets down another box and takes out a different wand which he hands to Harry. "Perhaps this!"

Harry takes the wand and gives it a wave. This time some sort of unseen force seems to come from the wand and causes a glass beaker to explode.

"No matter, no matter!" Olivander says.

Olivander then goes further down an aisle and takes down another box. He stops and looks at it for a moment and then says "I wonder." Harry is staring at Olivander and for a moment Olivander hesitates as if even he is not sure to proceed.

He then hands Harry the wand. As Harry touches the wand a light seems to glow from the wand reflecting on Harry's face and something intangible seems to be in the air around them.

"Curious, very curious." Olivander says.

"I'm sorry, what is curious?" Harry asks.

"I remember every wand I've ever sold Mr. Wayne. It just so happened that the bat whose wing resides in that wand, gave another wing as well. Just one other." Olivander states.

"It's curious that you should be destined for this wand…when it's brother gave you that scar."

"And….who owned that wand?" Harry asks.

"We do not speak his name. The wand chooses the wizard Mr. Wayne. It's not always clear why. But I think it's clear that we can expect great thing from you. After all, he who must not be named…,did great things….Terrible, yes! But great!" Olivander says while handing Harry the wand.

Just then comes a knocking on the window. "Happy birthday Harry!"

It's Hagrid holding a cage…..with a large bat on the inside of it.

To be continued…..
