It didn't take Velma long to search out the location Bruce had her google. And once they were close, they only had talked to a few local vendors before someone finally pointed out the exact store they were looking for. But it wasn't an easy find, as they had to walk through a crowded building that hid a set of stairs at the back of the shop. Leading to their destination.
Trailing after and watched Velma light up as it felt like they were being transported to another world. Going from the bustle of the streets, to the cramped corners of the first floor shop before walking up a flight to be let into the wide open floor space of the hobby store. Watching her eyes go full of wonder as the walls were covered from floor to ceiling with various aspects of many interests.
He did notice how the moment they stepped past the main door, the jingle of the bells attached to the frame attracted the attention of the patrons that wandered around as well as a few workers that milled about. But it didn't last long, as the people continued about their business not minding the pair that wandered into their midst.
"Oooooooo..."
Casting his glance down, he saw Velma drink in everything before them. Head panning around to look everywhere. Definitely something in her element, which amused him to see her utterly captivated. Not that she disliked the rest of the stores they visited earlier. But there was a clear difference that this was more her speed and type of store she might frequent on her own. Taking note that this was something that Velma genuinely liked for herself. Logging that for later, if he needed ideas.
"Enthusiast of these types of stores, then? Hobby shops and the like?"
"Well, it's hard not to get excited to see all of the electronics before us. Not only RC Cars, but they seem to have a decent collection of drones and other electronically controlled- Ooo! Is that a hover craft over there?"
"Heh. Well go look at it, if it catches your eye."
Chuckling, Bruce gestured for her to check it out. They were there to shop for things. And it didn't mean that she had to hold back if she wanted to look at something that caught her attention. He watched her struggle for a second, before she gave in and trotted further into the store to look around. Trailing after her, to watch her gravitate to the various bits that hung on the wall and lined the shelving.
"Are you a fan of RC cars in particular? Like, got a collection at home or something?"
"Well, sort of. We need to know all sorts of tech for mysteries. Since remote control vehicles are such an easy way to have access to these electronic parts, they sometimes find their way into the wrong hands. So, I dabble from time to time to keep up with what is around. Has come in handy on the job more times then I can count. Never know when a mundane ghost haunting might involve some fancy mechanics out of the blue when you least expect it. From transparent gear ratios on a ice monster, to mayors controlling twenty foot tall evil robot clown..."
"Do I want to-"
"No. Better not to ask." Velma cut him off with a shake of her head. He made sure to remember that, but maybe ask her later. Or if he can't find out information on his own, talk to the gang eventually. He wasn't a fan of clowns himself, so no love lost. But the way Velma's tone of voice changed as she was talking about it, and how quickly she changed the subject. He figured it would possibly be worth knowing the backstory to that curt of a cut off. Especially to not bring up a sore subject accidentally. Though maybe it was just the reason she was not against punching Joker in the past...
Not that he was complaining.
"But I do like to race the gang on occasion. There was this one time..."
Listening to her ramble, he let her geek out and talk to him about a range of wireless frequencies and other electrical parts to distract her from what she might have been thinking before. He knew a decently amount of the information she was telling him. But he didn't mind hearing it again, especially with the passion behind her words. Wondering at a later date, how much fun she would be once he could let her play around with his gadgets. Well, more then what she had already handled when their paths crossed in the past. But it was still too early for that, instead just letting her direct where they were going. Letting her guide him around the store as they explored and she happily rambled. With Bruce soaking in every moment of her excitement.
But he didn't miss her shift in candor when they turned the corner and came across a huge area with model rockets. Not exactly the model kits he had been thinking about, but they were interesting enough. Especially with the soft look Velma gave it, running her hand down one of the nearby kits she was tall enough to reach. (The display being floor to very tall ceiling, even taller then Bruce.)
"Another thing for mysteries?" Leaning over, he tried to look at her before she turned away. Assuming she would. But she just looked directly at him and shook her head. Her eyes sparkling at his inquiry.
"Remember when I said that Shaggy was a camp counselor?"
"Yeah."
"Well, he wasn't the only one. The whole gang at one time or another in our youth were some at camps for Summer. And well, also for Mysteries. And while Shaggy was more for the arts and crafts..."
"You were the Rocketry teacher? I can see that." The woman would later go on to become a consultant to NASA. Of course, he could see her being interested in launching rockets and other propulsion things. And it wasn't too hard to get access to these types of kits and as long as someone was responsible enough like her when it came to setting them off with the younger kids.
"How big was the largest..." Bruce paused, making sure to be referring to the model kit rockets, and not her involvement with the several legit rockets she had been involved with help putting into actual space.
"How big was the largest rocket you put together from a kit, with the kids?"
"Nice recovery there." She grinned at him, her eyes twinkling with mirth. Bumping him lightly with an elbow. Which he just tossed her a sheepish grin and rubbed the back of his neck. Raising a hand as he spoke.
"Heh. Well, I realized that depending on what I said, I might be a tad bit out of my league."
"Oh, 'League', really?"
"Oh.. well, yes, heh but no. But also kinda yes. I can't take credit for that, even though my money might have been a tad bit behind it. I do have to leave some of those to the experts."
Bruce smiled and bumped her lightly back in jest. Making sure though, to not instigate them into more dueling. Less innocents get dragged into their jovial combat. Again. Though he hadn't meant it in that way, but it still worked. Amusing him slightly at how their conversations had been that day, thinking across what had happened in their date. How easily they were able to flow in and out of their conversations across a broad range of topics so far. As well as including both of their unique jobs and skill sets that seemed to interact sometimes in ways that he didn't even mean. But just made sense.
Adding more reasons that the amazing woman before him, was proving to be a perfect companion. Even more then he original thought.
"Well, this was just a normal kid's summer camp. We didn't want to get too fancy, or dangerous with the kids. As well as we didn't have a huge field at the camp to use to launch anything too big. Pity. So, most of the Estes' beginners collection was good for the younger kids to use and fun enough to get them in the air. A big Burtha was nice since it could reach around five hundred feet in the air for a launch, with a mini Fat Boy being about half the height. Both popular options. Still, when you are a kid, the experience of those rockets in person can give a rush to watch them. Pressing the button and then the roar of the multi-stage rocket hissing into the air. Trying to keep up with it as it becomes a speck into the sky... And then the fun of trying to catch it as it falls down to earth. Sure, watching the legit rockets is thrilling from the control room, but the small ones have their own magic. I knew many legit rocket scientists who dabbled in the hobby between normal launches just for those reasons."
Placing his hand to his face, Bruce took in the wall. Giving his fake mustache ends a bit of a twirl at ideas that bounced around his head. He considered it for a bit, before nodding once at her. Beaming a smile with mischief behind his eyes as he spoke.
"Got it! So, a later date idea is to launch off some rockets."
"Wait, what!? That is what you took from that?"
"Well, you made it sound like it's been far too long, and well... I'm not against some good training for trying to predict where the rocket might land, as well as the skill of timing to managed to get under it to catch a falling rocket. Not that I don't have the space for a launch at the Manor. The boys might get a kick out of it. So, could be a bonding experience with them and you later."
He watched her raise up a finger, letting it hover there for a second. But what ever she was thinking of saying was left unsaid. She did waggle the hand at him before snorting once and crossing her arms in a small huff. Shaking her head as she spoke.
"File that under another 'yet'. I don't think I am ready to be introduced to Dick and Tim, mainly before the gang knows at least half of everything. Let alone spend time as your girlfriend with your two sons. Daphne might kill me if I did that before she knew who I was dating... Which I realize I am now dating a single man with two grown sons. And that is going to take a bit to not only get used to, but also that they walk the same road that you do. So, more things to keep to myself... But that makes sense. Taking after their father, I guess."
"I didn't do that on purpose... I swear. Alfred would have killed me, had I involved them on purpose. It just ended up like that."
"Oh, I don't doubt. We seem to attract 'like'. So, your kids ending up taking after their father, makes sense. With the people being around you. Like Mr. Pennyworth as well. But Alfred... While part of me is curious to learn HIS backstory, I also feel it's behind so many locked doors I better not pry into. Less I find myself at the bottom of the Gotham River. Daphne's Jenkins has a past we don't fully know either, so I assume the.. well 'your' Butler has an involved past as well. That man moved too skilled to not have some type a training, and I don't think you are behind why he knows such things."
"Well, you are right. Alfred came to my family with more skills then I think even I know of. But my lifestyle has probably helped his talents to have grown more diverse then most other butlers. But nah, nothing to directly worry about for your end. He'll protect certain national secrets to his grave, but most of it isn't too classified. At least compared to the rest of us. But my sons, each of them had their own reasons to to be in this line of work following after me. As no doubt you and the gang have your own reasons that you guys do what you do. You're just more above board, then we are. But I am very sure they will come to love you. They already approve of you at least."
"Oh, well I am glad that the rest of the family is ok with me knowing..." Velma paused, looking back up at him biting her lip a bit with worry. Her brows furrowing as she seemed hesitant and fidgeting. Like she had just thought of something.
"They know, right? I am not making you break some rule that in the house or something, am I?"
"No no, I made sure to have a family meeting with them all before we really got too into things. And even more with you finding out the truth. They were worried at first why I asked them all to come suddenly for a dinner, one night. Especially since I told them to pick up Barbara on their way home. But the conversation quickly shifted to 'who can you be actually that serious about?' once I was able to calm them down at the emergency meeting and told them about you."
"Makes sense, you do have a long list of Playboy girlfriends before me. So, need to clarify who you might be talking about. And if you called them out of the blue, you would have to elaborate on why you were talking to them specifically."
"Well, I am hoping to change that number, to mainly one. But yeah. They then went from 'who could it be', to 'Oh, her? She could do better.' and then settling on 'Who wants to bet me she'll take blank amount to find out the truth?' once they knew I was dropping the act around you. Which Alfred won, if you were wondering."
"Glad to know I am- Oh, that is funny. I can see that, since I've worked with him the most besides you. But glad they have such high opinions of me. Or... Not sure if it's low expectations of you. That would be bad for your family to think that."
Bruce mentally melted to see her so worried about him and what his family thought about him. But he made sure to reassure her about it. More they were prone to teasing each other at times, so he hoped they would be nicer to her then they were to him. But them having a higher opinion of her at just the mention, And previous experiences with the Gang. Which was a good sign.
"More, they know me. So, they figure you can do better then the mess I am."
"I did say 'like' finds 'like'. So, we are just a pair then."
She leaned back at him, to rest her upper back on his chest. He was touched by the gesture and moved to lightly hug her around her shoulder with an arm. Mimicking the same motion he had done up on the fire escape, since that had been ok. Not to cuddle her too much, even though he really wanted to. But he was elated when she made a gesture back at him. Earning a hand coming up to rest on his arm and gave it a squeeze.
He clung to her for a bit before he figured they might get spotted by someone in the aisles, sadly having to let her go. Concerned that she might not want them cuddling in the aisles this early in their relationship. He also didn't want to push his luck with her either. Especially since her reactions earlier in the day. It had been a mixed bag so far, and he was still learning his limits. He didn't want to cross a bad line again if he could help it.
"I think I hear someone coming."
She made a small sad noise. He was happy she didn't approve of him moving away, though he was proven right as a customer came around the corner. Seeming that he let go just in time. Watching her spook at the sudden person appearing that they had to let walk by with a cart. Sliding to the side to let the woman pass by, none the wiser.
He moved to side and picked up from the earlier conversation. Trying to distract her. "So, maybe later for a rocket date with the boys. But for now, we should probably get back to shopping for Fred?"
"Mmmph."
Came the noise out of her. Bruce wasn't sure what was going on in her head as she seemed slightly distracted and her head dipped slightly. Hoping that wasn't something he did, or didn't do... Or hoping that she wasn't being randomly too hard on herself. He would have to slowly work on that with her, since she had a habit of dipping into that mentality that he also noticed. So, would need to slowly build her up more confident in herself for them to be able to cuddle more in public. He wanted to be in her arms again, but only when she was ready.
"Let's keep going."
Trailing slightly after the woman and her cart, they picked up light conversation before they turned a corner and notice that the store actually had a second floor. Which was surprising with such the open sections and rows of products they already had seen, had even more space! Which was technically a third floor, with the 'first' floor of the hobby shop above the packed store they traveled through to get there.
"I wonder what is up there?"
"Well, we haven't found the model kits yet, so... Maybe they are up there?" Bruce proposed. They hadn't explored everything on that level, but it didn't seem obvious that the models were around in the spots they didn't explore. Maybe they were on the second floor then.
"Shall we?"
