His Heart of Darkness
Chapter 1
Amy Rose loathed the night. So how was it she constantly found herself in it, walking alone? Probably because she spent the entire day out and about wanting to absorb every ounce of the sun's energy it would give in the day. She loved the sun and the warmness it brought down each and every day. It made everything on the planet work and that's the same kind of energy she wanted to radiate in life. She did that. Cream always said so. Her Chao, Cheese, would always agree whenever Cream would offer her kind words of encouragement.
Tails always would help as well. He was a good friend. A shared admiration for Sonic started their friendship and she hoped that being friends with Sonic's best friend would be some kind of gateway to help her get closer to him. It just never seemed to pan out. Sonic was distant, running three steps away from her whenever she felt like she took one towards him. But that was always one of his bad habits. He kept people at a distance, even Tails. The young fox even admitted even he doesn't know Sonic as well as he'd like. He always just kept to himself and came around when he came around.
She and Tails would talk about this stuff for as long as they could in a day while the fox would upgrade the X-Tornado and other fancy trinkets in his workshop. She would ask about Sonic and he would ask about Cream. Cream had an admiration for the fox, but didn't know if her feelings were anything beyond that quite yet. So she would have to explain to Tails just to be patient and keep at it. Cream would come around. She was just shy.
And then she would have to make the long venture back to her own house on the other side of the Mystic Ruins. What Sonic could do in just a couple of seconds took her much more time, to her dismay. How was he so fast and she just wasn't? The fact that she wasn't put her at the place she didn't want to be: Dealing with the night sky. Try as she might, she simply couldn't view that sky the same way again. The Black Arms invasion was...disturbing to say the least. Disgusting, hideous monsters from space descended to earth and were hell bent on using it as an energy source. Thank God Shadow had stopped them.
But even the fact he did didn't make the fact they existed any less of a horror. What if there were others like them? The cosmos seemed to have an endless supply of nightmare in store and the world was still recovering from the last invasion. Hopefully, the horrors of space were something she'd never see again in her lifetime. Things were much simpler when it was just whacky Eggman and his scheme for world domination. Things only got extremely complicated when...well... Shadow showed up.
The dark hedgehog had not been seen since he defeated Black Doom and saved the world by himself. Try as they might, no one could find him. Sonic made numerous attempts as did his closer friends, Rouge and Omega. But he had gone dark. It was if he never existed and was just a fleeing memory. Not that it really mattered. These were just thoughts she used to get herself to her home and ignore the fact that it was just so cold in the Mystic Ruins at night.
Eventually, she made it back to her home where she was able to open her door, shower, fall on her back and drift herself to sleep. Tomorrow was another day of trying to make Sonic love her which would inevitably end in either no progress or inevitable embarrassment only for Tails and Cream to say, "You'll get him next time." Why didn't he have any interest in her? Even as a friend to confide in? He was just...rude. There was no other word she had for it. He was either rude or just one of the most socially inept beings in the galaxy. Tails suspected the latter. He insisted Sonic is not a bad or mean guy. He just didn't know any better. He lived in the fast lane and you had to be in that lane with him to even have a remote chance. Amy just knew she wasn't in that lane, but she knew she could keep up if he just gave her an honest chance.
But no one ever gave her a chance. Even their other friends like Knuckles seemed to brush her off at a moment's notice. At least Knuckles kind of had an excuse. He was stuck on Angel Island and his time away had to be brief and as seldom as possible. Sonic had nothing like that. Big was nice, but he...well...was Big... Try as she might to see others, she felt like she would always be the weak girl she always was getting kidnapped and chasing her hero seemed indifferent to her existence. Why did it seem the best friend she had ever made that wasn't in the tightly woven group was the robot, Gamma. Gamma saw something in her that she wished Sonic would see and he wasn't even an organic being. He still saw her for what she tried to give off, for what she tried to be, a sun. She wanted to be the sunlight in everything she did, but it was getting harder and harder to shine when it felt like nothing she did ever got the attention of the man of her dreams, that stubborn blue blur. She cursed him as she rested on the pillow, but still couldn't help but let out one last utterance.
'Sonic...Slow down...' she thought as she drifted off to her dreams. "Please..." she muttered in her sleep.
