A/N Did whatever the actual cause of Sunnydale Syndrome affect vampires and demons too? If we had ever gotten an explantation for Sunnydale Syndrome, we might be able to answer this question posed by some reviewers. Because they're right, the bad guys weren't behaving anymore logically than the good guys were. But considering just how many people over the course of the show was confirmed were messing with their minds, their lives and nothing was ever proactively done to prevent it, they were clearly compromised.

As has been noted, Angel was neither Liam of Galway nor Angelus, he was a personality created to handle the trauma of a soul torn out from wherever it had been or whoever it had been a part of 140 some years after Liam of Galway died in an alleyway and Darla sired Angelus into his corpse. As a result Angel remembered both Liam's life and Angelus' existence, because Angelus had access to Liam's brain after taking over the dead body.
Both of them had their own methods of dealing with stress or what they perceived as stress. When Liam's father wanted him to stop drinking and chasing women and learn his business, Liam responded by getting drunk, causing trouble and chasing more women.
When Angelus was stressed, usually because Spike was doing something stupid, Angelus would beat him up, torture people and play mind games.
Aside from beating Spike up, that was pretty much Angelus' routine anyway.
Angel both was and was not either of them. He was them if you held that memory is what makes a person, a person, but since he didn't perform the actions that created those memories...
Angel needed to figure out who he was and could be and all he had to guide him was the memories of a drunk womanizer and a particularly sadistic vampire. His efforts to create his own identity had resulted in two years of him trying to prove he was still a monster for Darla and 96 or so years of wallowing in self pity in a gutter.
Before he'd laid eyes on Buffy, small, blond and sucking on a lollipop enjoying the sunshine. She'd been beautiful, so perfect and he'd wanted her, he'd studied her, made himself what he thought she wanted in a man and it worked, she wanted him.
Except he wasn't a man and could never walk in the sun with her, so he'd resented Xander Harris, the boy who could walk in the sun with her. The boy she barely acknowledged the existence of, unless she wanted to make Angel jealous, then the boy had a use.
She was drawn to Angel's darkness, his strength, his uniqueness, so much like her own. Something that, if they'd still been around, both Dracula and Spike would have noted as well.
And now, thanks to that boy, he was no longer dark, no longer strong and no longer unique. He was as weak and ordinary as any human.
The fact that he could now walk in the sunshine with Buffy had completely escaped him, even though he'd done just that as they walked to and from the store together.
Angel was stressed, very stressed. So he relied on the memories of Liam of Galway to guide him in how to deal with it, because the memories of Angelus terrified him. Which is why he was currently at the Fish Tank, a human bar in downtown Sunnydale, getting drunk and given that, while he had the memories of being drunk, he'd never actually been drunk, his tolerance was pretty low.
Which is why it didn't take long for him to get drunk or long for him to insult another a drunk, which quickly led to a fight, which spiraled as more drunks got involved and a free for all soon erupted.
Which led to the Sunnydale cops, who being well aware of vampires in Sunnydale almost never went out at night, for once actually doing their job and responding to the call. Since they'd been briefed that somehow all the vampires were gone anyway and their usual purpose had been downgraded and now they had to provide actual police service to the city of Sunnydale.
Which is why his drunk ass is currently sleeping it off in the drunk tank next to other drunks. Including Tony Harris, who just the day before found out his son and second favorite punching bag had gotten himself emancipated from his house. So Tony thought he had reason to be stressed too and had taken himself off to the Fish Tank and gotten drunk. Nevermind that he would have done that anyway.
Jessica Harris did what she usually did when she got a call about Tony being in the drunk tank, left him to sober up. Angel had passed out before he could tell the police to call Buffy, the only one who might have cared that he was here and facing charges. The police didn't recognize him as the vampire Angel and why would they when they thought all the vampires were gone.
Which meant no one could post bail for him either when he did sober up and was told he was being charged with drunk and disorderly, starting a brawl and considerable property damage and he'd just have to stay put until a judge could see him.
Since at that point he didn't want Buffy to see him like this, his day wasn't going so great either. If this was being human, he'd rather be a vampire. At least than he wouldn't feel weak, helpless or have a damn hangover.
How had Liam functioned having so many damn hangovers?
