A/N The Eye of Agamotto is one of those things in the comics that's, well it's just too much. The list of things it can do keeps growing, so for the purposes of this story I'm going to stick to a simple explanation of what it can do. This list of things it can do is taken from the Marvel comics wiki, not the Marvel cinematic wiki and like I said I'm limiting the scope of it's abilities, otherwise it could be used to solve every problem and that's just too much.
Buffy used a Tirer la Couverture trance to try to see if someone was using Magic to make Joyce sick and discovered Dawn was different.

"Ah, Xander, there you are." Jenny Calendar spotted the young man talking to Cordelia Chase the next day and made her way over to him. "I needed to talk to you about something."
"Is it about the Saturday class?"
"No, the other topic you wanted help on." She replied circumspectly, given the numbers of ears surrounding them that knew nothing of Magic.
"Cordelia knows, Ms. Calendar, she's helping me with a few things adjacent to that subject." Xander glanced at her.
"Alright, but this is a personal matter that involves someone else."
"Oh, okay." Xander nodded, understanding. "You want privacy for whoever it. Your classroom?"
"The Library would be better."
Xander blinked as he digested that statement. The Library meant it likely involved one or more of the Scooby Gang. "Now?" He asked, clamping down on his alarm.
"Your free period will be fine." Not an emergency than, Xander breathed a sigh of relief.
"Third period." He promised. "Will you be there?"
"In case you need help, yes." She affirmed, the Magic might be tricky and just remembering a spell didn't mean Xander could actually do it. Magic took time and effort to learn and do.
"Is it okay if Cordelia comes too? Like I said, she knows about this and she's helped us before with other things."
"I think privacy would be appreciated." Ms. Calendar answered. "Once the problem is explained, I think you'll understand why."
"Alright." Xander agreed. "Than I'll see you then." Curious about what the problem was and why secrecy was so important.
When third period came around Xander headed for the Library and was met by Ms. Calendar and Giles and the issue was explained.
"You're questioning things I questioned then and was told it wasn't a big deal?" Xander asked. "And I can tell you exactly where Angel was while we were dealing with the Harvest, hiding under the stairs in the Bronze watching the whole thing, I saw him."
"In hindsight, Xander, your concerns deserved more attention and that's just one of the things I'm questioning now. Why I was so dismissive of clearly concerning events." Giles explained.
"Whoever or whatever caused it may need to reenforce it and hasn't for awhile and that's why you're questioning now." Xander suggested. "Or they may be dead and with them, whatever it is that made it so you didn't see in the first place. And the fact that vampires ceased to exist two days ago, makes the timing really suspicious."
"I agree." Giles said ruefully. "In which case there's nothing I can do, the miscreant is beyond my reach. But for my peace of mind, I need to know. Do your memories of this Dr. Strange include a spell that will let you see something like a thrall?"
"Not exactly a spell, but there is a magical device I can use that might show us something." He pulled it out from under his shirt. "It was a toy, plastic and the transformation spell made it real. It's called the Eye of Agamotto and different sources say he may have been a mortal, but not human, sorcerer, who predates the Elder Beings, what you would call the Old Ones, being driven off Earth or was born from the tear of a celestial goddess, Oshtur."
"These comics are familiar with the Old Ones?!" Giles asked, alarmed at how such knowledge might be known.
"The comics are inspired by myths and legends, Giles. The knowledge has been out there for centuries." Xander said dryly. A flabbergasted Giles was all but gaping at him. "Watch a TV show or read a fiction book once in awhile, Giles. Ghosts and demons and witches and vampires are popular stories everywhere and always have been."
Moving to forestall a long-winded conversation on the wrong topic, Jenny asked a question of her own. "How does the Eye of Agamotto work? What does it do?"
"In simplest terms, it reveals truth." Xander answered. "Depending on a few different factors, it can show me events as they happened or make them visible for others to see."
"So if I've been thralled or a spell has been put on me, this Eye will let you see it. Like a Tirer la Couverture spell." Jenny nodded. "That's French for 'pull back the curtain', it's a trance to let you see spells. Can anyone use this Eye?"
"It's like Thor's Hammer. Supposedly only the pure of heart and soul can use it." Xander held it up to his face and activated it, a third eye appeared on his forehead, startling both of the adults and a light shone from the Eye of Agamotto, sweeping over Giles.
"Giles, I'm not sure how you're still functioning because apparently you've been thralled and there's spells on you." Xander told the dismayed man. "And you might want to do something about that tattoo on your arm, it's a beacon calling attention to you."
Giles clamped his hand over the tattoo hidden under his shirt sleeve and stared at the young man. "Any idea who thralled me or who cast the spells?"
"No, but I can tell you that 'Angel is a friend' is reenforced using thrall and Magic." Xander answered, turning off the Eye. "Someone really wanted you to think Angel was someone you could trust. Fortunately, both the thrall and the Magic are fading."
