Siren was about three years old when she first opened her eyes to the world. Unbeknownst to her, she had spent the first three years of her life in a coma.
Her mother, Dahlia, gave birth to her in secret, fervently praying that no one would discover her pregnancy. She was a noble who had succumbed to her desires with a pirate, a lapse in judgment that her family would never forgive. If they ever found out, she would be disowned and cast out.
Initially, Dahlia tried to end her pregnancy. But every time she set sail for the doctor, the sea turned wild, and her ship was thrown off course. Every person she sent to arrange the procedure either vanished or was lost at sea.
It seemed as though the very world conspired against her. Her pregnancy began to show, forcing her to retreat from public life. She stopped attending functions, avoided friends and family, and resolved to hide her mistake, give birth in secret, and then carry on as if nothing had happened.
At first, everything went according to plan. Her pregnancy progressed, and the doctors who attended her were sworn to silence. Her servants were illiterate and mute, their tongues removed to ensure they could not betray her.
But then the contractions began. Dahlia thought she would die-shewantedto die. Nothing in her privileged life had ever caused her such pain, and she swore that as soon as the child was born, she would strangle the vile creature with her bare hands.
The labor lasted a day and a half, amid a violent storm that left the estate without power. In the chaos, two doctors were killed at her orders, and three slaves were torn apart in the maelstrom of events. When the wretched child was finally born, Dahlia lunged at it, determined to end its life.
Little did she know that this decision would seal her own fate. As she reached for Siren, the storm above tore open, and a lightning bolt as large as a ship struck with ferocious precision, engulfing them all.
The devastation was incomprehensible. No one survived-except one. A tiny, frightened baby, left in a coma.
A miracle of life.
